• Describe the Geography of Coos Bay.

Vocabulary

• Absolute Location- Precise Location ex. 260 2nd Avenue Coos Bay, OR 97420

• Relative Location- Telling a location by referring to another place. Ex. I live in between Fred Meyer and Taco Bell.

• Latitude-Imaginary lines that run east to west.

• Longitude- Imaginary lines that run North to South.

• Equator-Latitude line that separates the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Vocabulary

• Prime Meridian- Divides the globe between the Eastern and Western hemispheres.

• Compass Rose- Place on a map that indicates the directions N,S,E,W.

• Key- Show symbols and colors used on a map, and what each one means.

• Title-The subject of a map.

• Scale bar-Helps you find actual distances between points on a map.

Location

•Where is it?•Absolute Location vs. Relative Location

Regions

• Areas that share a common feature.•We are in the Political region of the United States, but are part of the Oregon coastal region with Lincoln City.

Place

• Natural and Human features that makes one place different from another• Landforms, climate, plants,

animals, people, language, culture, ways humans change their environment

• Ex. The forest is peaceful and quiet. The farmland helps us grow food.

Movement

•“How do people, goods, and ideas move from place to place?”•What happens in one place often affects another.

Interaction

• The relationship between people and the environment.• When we live in an

area, we usually begin to change it.• Ex. We cut down trees

to make a school, we built a dam to make a river.

Different maps can have different purposes!

The world based of population

Locator Globe

• Many maps are shown with locator globes.

• They show where on the globe the area of the map is located

Political Maps

• Shows political borders• Countries, states, counties, etc.

• Colors don’t signify anything besides making it easier to read

Physical Maps

• What a region looks like by showing its major physical features.

• Elevation• Height of land above sea level

• Relief• How sharply lands rise or fall

Special Purpose Maps

• Examples could include Language, Climate, Religion, Trade, etc.

• In Special Purpose maps it is important to check the map key.
