celebrated in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage.

Apartheid in South Africa
• Apartheid was the complete social, political, and economic isolation of black people from 1948 to 1994
• Legalized racial segregation (“Jim Crow”)• Black South Africans were stripped of
citizenship by white supremacists, an ideology similar to Hitler’s in Germany
• Blacks were forced to move to designated ‘homelands” – similar to Native Americans sent to “Indian Reservations” in the U.S.
Americans
• The antiapartheid movement became a major priority to Af-Ams
• Encouraged college and corporations to turn attention and financial assistance to South Africa
Nelson Mandela
• Nelson Mandela was the peace seeking leader of the African National Congress (key opposition party to South African president)
• His 1994 release from a 27-year prison term signaled end of Apartheid
• Elected Pres: 1994-1999
