Our H STORYImagine! was established in 1963 by a group of parents determined to see that their children with developmental disabilities had the opportunity to participate in their community.

We continue to use that original goal as the basis for our mission. We believe that people with intellectual or developmental disabilities have much to offer, and providing the tools and supports that allow them to show what they have to offer benefits us all.

Imagine! presents a continuum of services to provide supports for people through their lifetime. In 2016-2017, Imagine! served 3,848 individuals and their families.

Our MISS ONThe mission of Imagine! is to create a world of opportunity for all abilities.

Values and Principles

• Our workforce is our number one asset.

• Families are essential to our success.

• We embrace a culture of support and creativity.

• We inspire a positive and inclusive community.

• We honor our tradition of integrity and leadership.

• We believe in the potential of all.

Dear Friend of Imagine!: Welcome to the 2016-2017 Imagine! Annual Report.

In the pages that follow, you will find stories, pictures, and data that will give you deep insight into the past year at Imagine!.

I think you will also discover a unifying theme throughout this report: community.

You’ll see Imagine! connecting with community: parents talking about Imagine! programs that enable their children to find their own community, or adults with intellectual disabilities who work and contribute in the community thanks to the support of Imagine!.

You’ll see the community connecting with Imagine!: volunteers who graciously offer their time and effort to improve Imagine!’s ability to meet its mission, or donors who give generously so that Imagine!’s services can go far beyond what traditional funding sources would enable. In both cases, that support makes our impact on the community so much greater.

Imagine!’s mission is to create a world of opportunity for all abilities. We can’t do it by ourselves, and fortunately we don’t need to. Our community is right there with us, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Sincerely,

Mark EmeryChief Executive Officer, Imagine!

2016 – 2017 Imagine! Executive Team

Dear Friend of Imagine!: I have had the distinction of serving as the President of the Imagine! Board of Directors for the last year. My history with Imagine! has truly come full circle, as one of my very first jobs (and in many ways one of the most impactful jobs I ever had) was working for Labor Source, way back when Imagine! was known as the Developmental Disabilities Center.

Imagine! has changed in many ways since those early years, but the fundamental purpose of the organization remains. Imagine! recognizes the potential of all, and is committed to creating a community where that potential can be reached, regardless of ability or disability. In a world where change seems to be the norm, I find it both comforting and inspiring that Imagine! remains as true to its mission now as it did when I began my career there.

The pages of this Annual Report clearly demonstrate that mission in action. I believe that after reading it, you will come away feeling privileged to be associated with an organization that has held firm to its core values and purpose for more than 50 years, and continues to provide opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to become more self-reliant and to contribute to their communities.

It remains a true honor to be a part of the remarkable legacy of Imagine!.

Where They Live

“Out & About is the best social program for kids with special needs in Colorado. I really don’t know what we’d do without it. I am pretty sure all the other parents feel this way as well. We love it.”

– Parent of Out & About participant

Imagine!’s Out & About Summer Camp program offers a variety of opportunities for participants to practice skills while learning to connect with their communities. Whether participants are visiting the zoo or attending a Rockies game, all of the activities focus on the development of lifelong skills.

AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS

Imagine!’s Out & About department marked its 20th Anniversary in 2017. Celebrations included a special “Bike Block Party,” where individuals with a variety of disabilities were able to test drive different styles of adaptive bicycles; a successful crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for adaptive equipment to enhance Out & About’s many recreation activities; and an online collection of stories and reminiscences from current and former Out & About employees, participants, and business partners.

Brodie Schulze, who works for Imagine!’s CORE/Labor Source team, was selected as the Colorado Direct Support Professional (DSP) of the Year by ANCOR, a national organization comprised of service providers for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. From parents to coworkers to people accepting services, the consensus is that Brodie is a truly exceptional employee who embodies Imagine!’s mission of creating a world of opportunity for all abilities.

To address an unprecedented shortage of qualified workers in Boulder County, Imagine! reimagined how (and who) we recruit to fill jobs by developing an app called “Imaginect,” which takes an Uber-style approach to employee recruiting. Imaginect allows Imagine! to engage a team of on-demand employees pulled from typically underutilized labor pools such as college students or retirees. (imaginect.org)

VOLUNTEERS HELP IMAG NE! THRIVE

Imagine! volunteers share their time and talents directly with the people Imagine! serves and with projects of all sizes. Volunteers increase the quality of support and services we are able to provide, and help Imagine! stay connected with our community in meaningful ways. Some examples of amazing and impactful volunteerism at Imagine! last year include:

UPS sent a team of volunteers to help with Imagine!’s Dayspring department’s Messy Play Day (one of Dayspring’s Community Calendar Activities for babies and toddlers with developmental delays and disabilities). The UPS team arrived early to help set up all of the stations and help Dayspring staff prepare for the arrival of families later in the morning.

The Centaurus High School Cheerleading team took the time to thoroughly clean vehicles for Imagine!’s Out & About department, both inside and out, making our cars and vans sparkle like new!

A group of teens visited all the way from Refuge Ministries, located in Mexico, MO, and spent part of their summer break volunteering with Imagine!’s Longmont CORE/Labor Source (CLS) department, playing games, teaching music, and supporting CLS artists.

465 volunteers donated 10,954 hours of their time last year

FINANC AL HIGHLIGHTSConsolidated FinancialsThe Developmental Disabilities Center doing business as Imagine! and Affiliates Financial Statements is comprised of Imagine!, the Imagine! Foundation, three Imagine! Housing Corporations (group homes), and the Imagine! Development Company. Imagine!’s audit and IRS 990 can be viewed online at www.imaginecolorado.org/financial-information.

Net IncomeAs directed by the Board of Directors, Imagine! budgets a 2% margin of revenue over expenses. Net Income was greater than 2% in the last two years because of higher grants and other fundraising, unanticipated revenue from the State, and earnings on investments. Net Income is used to invest in the organization with capital needs such as vehicles and facilities improvements, as well as to cover principal payments for debt service.

ExpensesThe Imagine! Foundation handles private fundraising for Imagine! and transfers the revenue to Imagine! on a quarterly basis. Foundation revenue and expenses are included in the consolidated financials and are one percent of Imagine!’s expenses. Management & General expenses account for nine percent. Ninety-one percent of expenses go to programs.

Imagine! Annual ReportImagine! Annual Report 1918

Dear Friend of Imagine!: The Imagine! Foundation’s efforts to build awareness of, and raise funds for, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities has enjoyed significant momentum. This past year, we reached a new milestone, surpassing the $8 million mark in total funds raised since the Foundation started in 2000. We also completed the mortgage payment on Imagine!’s Charles Family SmartHome.

Our donors – individuals, businesses, religious groups, civic clubs, foundations, event sponsors, and government entities – combined resources to ensure that Imagine! can create a world of opportunity for all abilities. We have asked you for your support, and you’ve responded so generously! Last year’s total fundraising results reached $657,000 from 769 donors!

Serving as President of this incredible organization the past two years has been an extremely rewarding experience for me, as well as for my family. The Imagine! Foundation’s volunteer board of 20 community members are some of the finest people I know. We are guided by the work of Patti Micklin, the Foundation’s Executive Director, and Heather Sabo, Development Coordinator, who work tirelessly to keep everybody on task so we can successfully support Imagine!’s work.

The Imagine! Celebration is an event not to be missed, and I appreciate the efforts of our volunteers, who made the event a huge success, raising a record-breaking amount of $365,000.

We are proud to share this Annual Report with you, and thank you for believing in everyone’s potential.

Sincerely,

THE IMAG NE! CELEBRATIONThe 16th Annual Imagine! Celebration strived to connect our community of generous guests to Imagine!’s mission of creating a world of opportunity for all abilities. Katie Hawkins, Imagine! Celebration Committee Chair, led the effort to ensure that guests experienced a memorable evening and left believing in the potential of all.

In a special video, the Yager family shared Miah’s story of growth, setbacks, and more growth, as Imagine! provided supports that helped the whole family. View the video at imaginecolorado.org/miah.

“Throughout my teaching career, I worked with families who were struggling to get past what they considered to be the “stigma” attached to having a child with different needs. Although early intervention is so important, support, funding, availability of services, red tape, and emotional barriers were difficult to navigate. From the moment Jeff and I became aware of this amazing organization, we knew that we wanted to help in any way we could to assist Imagine! in fulfilling their mission. We are fortunate to be a part of this!”

Judy Gass is a retired teacher. Judy and her husband Jeff, who runs Ideal Promotions Advertising Specialties, are avid Imagine! volunteers.
