TYPES

• Ovo-lacto vegetarianism - includes animal

products such as eggs, milk, and honey.

• Lacto vegetarianism - includes milk but noteggs.

• Ovo vegetarianism - includes eggs but not milk.

• Veganism - excludes all animal flesh andanimal products, including milk, honey, eggs.

• Raw veganism - includes only fresh anduncooked fruit, nuts, seeds, and vegetables.

TYPES

• Fruitarianism - permits only fruit, nuts, seeds,

and other plant matter that can be gatheredwithout harming the plant.

• Su vegetarianism (in Buddhism) - excludes allanimal products as well as vegetables in the

allium family (which have the characteristicaroma of onion and garlic): onion, garlic,scallions, leeks, or shallots.

• Macrobiotic diets - consist mostly of wholegrains and beans.

MERITS OF VEG ETARIAN

DIET• They are easily chewable, especially for the

elderly who have lost their teeth.

• Many elderly feel that vegetarian food is moreeasily digestible.

• Vegetarian foods are cheaper than non-

vegetarian foods.• Some vegetables can be eaten raw preventing

the loss of nutrients while cooking.

• Vegetarian foods do not contain as much fat as

non-vegetarian foods.• Vegetarians should take care to include

soyabeans, groundnuts, lentils, mushroomsand so on to get a sufficient supply of proteins.

MERITS OF NON-VEG

ETARIAN DIET

• Non-vegetarian foods are rich in protein of highbiological value and in Vit B complex,especially B12 which is not available in plantfoods.

• Fish, especially the small varieties are a richsource of calcium.

• Egg-white is good source of protein and easilydigested.
