Beginning Of The Year 4 Summer Vacation Matchup Looking for a new way for students to share stories about their summer vacations? Read the book How I Spent My Summer Vacation by Mark Teague (Crown Books ForYoung Readers) to the class. Then have each student briefly write one thing he did over the summer on a slip of paper. Type each child’s summer experience on one sheet of paper—leaving a blank for the student’s name— and duplicate a copy for each member of the class. Direct each child to interview his peers to match each student with an event. Have each student ask three questions in each interview. If he is unable to make a match, instruct him to move on to the next person. With this activity, everyone gets to talk about his summer vacation! Andrea Bayroff—Gr. 5 Washington School Westfield, NJ Goals For A Successful Year! Team up with both parents and students to set goals for the school year. A few weeks before school starts, mail each child in your incoming class a news- letter to introduce yourself. In the letter, ask each student to set her goals for the upcoming school year. During the first week of school, have each student put her goals in writing and share them with her parents. Ask parents to add their set of goals for their child and return them to school. Once you get to know the children, use both lists to help you form a few goals for each child in your class. Use conference time to share with parents your students’ progress to- ward reaching those goals, and together you’ll make a winning team! JoAnn Robinson—Grs. 3–4 Marlborough School, Marlborough, NH My Goals For 4th Grade Complete my work on time. Study my spelling words. Read more library books.
