Isn’t it amazing how the years fly by, it just seems like we just heldour sale, and here it is again. They say time flies and I am startingto grasp on to that meaning. This past year is one to remember, asfast paced and busy as ever. Cattle prices seem to keep climbing, who would have ever thought that we would be selling steer calvesright off the cow for a $1,000 to $1,200 a head. It is record break-ing, but so is the cost of operating. Pay weight still is king even attoday’s market prices, cattle that weight heavy bring more dollarsper head, than light weight cattle.

The year 2013 will go down in the history books as one of agricul-ture’s most trying and rewarding years. This past spring was atough one it stayed cold and wet during calving causing some prob-lems along the way. Although it turned dry early on and it lookedlike there would be little to no grass and hay at turn out time, itdidn’t look good. By the end of May the rains came and the grassgrew, the hay was the best I can remember, crops in our area wereexcellent as a whole. We got into summer and rains were trimly.Grass was lush and tall. It stayed green into late fall, so we did notwean calves very early. The bull calves came off the cows October 7,5 weeks later than normal. For this reason they are a little lighterthan normal, but still stout and have the makings to be some of thebest we have produced. Cattle around our ranch are bred to sur-vive on little or no extra feed if mother nature cooperates. We neverpulled the heifer calves off the cows until November 26th, theycame in fat and heavy. We turned the cows back out and never fedthem anything until later December, we brought them homeDecember 23rd, to start feeding. Even then we have 73 head ofcows left out, never fed them a bale of hay until Christmas Eve.They have been on their own in deep snow and several minus 20-30degree days and up to minus 56 wind chills, digging out a living anddoing very well. The breed back on these cows was very good, only15 opens out of 350 cows exposed for spring calving. The fall calv-ing cows again calved out in the pasture including the 2 yr oldheifers again our death loss was only 3 calves out of 170 cows calvedand there was 4 sets of twins so we are still batting 100. We did notstart feeding the fall calvers until the second week in December, asa whole they look great. The severe cold is hard on the calves, butthey still look good. The cattle industry is in good shape to make alittle extra profit, so I hope that everyone positions themselves touse the best genetics available. Breeding cattle that work on therange is still one of the most profitable decisons a rancher canmake for themselves. There are so many multipliers of cattle thatfocus on one or 2 traits. I don’t think that is healthy, a good blend oftraits is where it is at. We believe that first of all we need to takecare of the rancher. Cattle have to be efficient and be able to sur-vive and breed up early in order for them to be profitable. Theyneed to raise big efficient calves that are in demand and bring mar-ket topping prices. Anyway you cut the pie, pay weight is still whatpays the rancher’s bills. The industry is preaching end product, thepackers say carcass is the way to go, most AI studs talk EPD’s, all isgood if we use a common sense approach, but what pays you, therancher, is cattle that can survive the tough harsh environments.Cattle that breed on time, produce a live healthy calf, and weancalves that press down the scale. EPD’s are a guide line the biggestnumbers are not always the best. True breeders of cattle know howto blend all the traits so all can be profitable. What I am trying tosay, is buy the bulls that will sire daughters that have stayingpower. Buy your bulls from seed stock breeders that know how tolook at and breed cattle that can survive when times and weatherconditions get harsh. These are the cattle that will pay the bills.

I believe that cross breeding is the easiest way to add extra profitto your bottom line. Too many times I see and hear breed associa-tions and seed stock producers claim you don’t need to cross breed. This is not science, it is greed. Every test on straight breeding vers-es cross breeding leads to cross breeding being the most profitable.Calves put on more weight, cattle convert feed better, and cows stayin production longer by crossbreeding. I believe that a SimmentalAngus animal is hard to beat, and the test stations and Universitystudies back that up. Today Sim Angus cattle bring premiums and

are in demand in the sale barn, feedlots, and on the rail, add someSimmental to a set of Angus or British cows, and watch your wean-ing weights and bottom line improve. You will really notice therewill be less small peewee cut back. By cross breeding it just seemsthe little fly weight cattle disappear.

We believe that we can help you find that profit driven animal. When you look at this offering look at the way they are designed. They are raised in the big country without creep feed and they stillweigh heavy. The dams of these bulls are moderate sized, not bighorsey coarse cattle that need extra feed when it gets tough out .Udder quality and disposition are some things we take seriously, they have to have good udders and a brain or they don’t survive thisoutfit. Don’t get me wrong, there are times problems arise and ifthey do, we are here to make it right. If you don’t get along withthem, we will take care of you it’s that simple. I had a man thathas used nothing but Angus for decades, buys 3 Simmental bullslast spring, his comment was boy these bulls stay in shape and areso gentle. Another first time customer said our bulls all came insound and in good condition. He also bought 3 from another sourceand every one came in lame and sore footed. I believe that is thedifference in how we develop them.

The guys that clip our bulls commented, you are one of only a fewbreeders that we clip for that isn’t afraid to put a band on a bullright up to sale time for disposition. They said most breeders don’tdo that. They also commented that these bulls just walk out of thechute, they don’t get upset very often. I take these comments as acomplement, but we also take them seriously. We have been work-ing the bulls getting the ready for the sale. We have removed a cou-ple bulls that we felt needed to be culled for various reasons, bydoing this we feel that the bulls that make the sale will be top herdbulls prospects.

I want to thank all of our past bull buying customers, it is a privi-lege to work with you. To those of you that are first time customersor just looking, thank you for taking the time to look our offeringover, I think you will like what you see.

After you purchase a bull, we will keep him free of charge until April1st. He will be delivered free of charge within reason, and have abreeding soundness exam at no charge to you. Unlike most places, the bull is not your responsibility as soon as the gavel drops. Whenyou buy a bull at Begger’s Diamond V Ranch, we take the responsi-bility to keep him sound, healthy and alive until you have him inyour possession. If he dies or gets hurt, we will replace him or giveyou credit on a bull next year. We will do what is right and get yourcows bred. Our doors are always open and we welcome your visit orcall. If you would like, come look at the bulls before the sale, comesee how they are developed in large pens, so they can exercise andmove around. Come see their mothers and see how they are main-tained. We just ask that you do it before sale day, so we can takethe time you need. Sale day is busy, but we want to meet you andare on hand to answer questions, and help you choose the right bullfor your program. If you have questions, please come up and ask us,we are here to help.

After the sale, we will have a social to relax and visit. If you havetime we would enjoy having you stay for awhile, have steak sand-wich and a refreshment. If you need to get back home, grab a sand-wich and a pop or water for the road. Again thanks for choosing usas your seedstock supplier.

Greetings

(The advise I gave my kids when they were growing up)Whenever you are about to do something, think of your mother, if she would approve, do it,

if she wouldn’t, it’s probably better left alone.

Remember whatever you do, can’t be undone.

The way you conduct yourself will be how you are remembered.

Be a leader, not a follower.

Take care of your friends and each other, if they need help or advice, do what is right, even if you get ridiculed, and it seems unpopular.

Testicle Measurements:Testicle Measurements:The scrotal circumference of each bull was tape-measured on December 15,2012. The scrotal measurements were adjusted to yearling, and sometimes willvary one way or another as actual yearlings. We guarantee our bulls 100% forfertility, unless damage is induced at your ranch, and then it’s out of our control.

Recommendations for Scrotal Circumference:

Months of Age 12-14 15-20 21-30 30 +Scrotal cm 35 37 39 49 Excellent

30-35 31-37 32-39 33-40 Good30 31 32 33 Poor

Suggested Guidelines for using Yearling Bulls:We are firm believers in the use of yearling bulls and feel it is one of the bestyears of their lives. It is a time when they are easy to manage and their onlyconcern is breeding cows. We have found that yearling bulls that are managedcarefully during the second year of their lives, not only do well, but they will per-form better, over time. Below are some suggested guidelines for the care ofyearling bulls.

Upon delivery to your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from older bulls andfeed them a maintenance ration of 5-8 pounds per head of grain and free choicehay. Reduce the amount of grain fed gradually, so that bulls are on straight hayor grass 2-4 weeks prior to the breeding season.

Where possible, try to limit the bulls to 45-60 days of pasture service the firstyear. At this time or as soon as possible, remove the bulls and put them in sepa-rate pastures with plenty of good quality grass.

It is best to feed yearling bulls separate from older bulls until after their secondbreeding season. This allows them to achieve the growth and strength to com-pete with older bulls for feed and space.

You will see the benefit of a little added cost and care of feeding a yearling bull byprobably two or three more years of service from a well managed and healthy bull.

RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST IN BULLS:RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST IN BULLS:

You will notice that we are selling 3/4 interest and full possessionin all bulls in this offering. This means we are retaining a 1/4 rev-enue sharing semen interest in all the bulls. This semen interest

is a royalty interest that entitles Begger’s Diamond V Ranch to 1/4of the revenues of any semen sold. It means the bull is in your

control andpossession unless otherwise stated or for a mutuallyagreed upon handling of the bull for promotional purposes. Youget 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Begger’s Diamond VRanch retained semen interest remains even if the bull, or any

interest in the bull, is sold to a third party. It is the buyer’sresponsibility to ensure that Begger’s Diamond V Ranch’s interestis upheld if semen is ever sold. The buyer must also inform anythird party of Begger’s Diamond V Ranch’s interest if the bull is

ever sold. Any semen you choose to collect as an ‘insurance poli-cy’ on your bull for your own in herd use, is 100% yours.

Begger’s Diamond V Ranch will not be responsible for expensesrelated to semen collection or promotion of any bull purchased.

Unless a mutual agreement is reached for these expenses prior topromotion and semen collection,. Cost incurred in collecting

Where do we go from here. The Simmental breed has stepped up to the challenge the past few years and has jumped through many of the hoops that at one time were stum-bling blocks and pit falls for the breed.

It wasnít very long ago that the word Simmental was associated with hard calving, hard keeping, rat tailed elephants of unpredictable colors, cattle that get sick in the feedlots

With the help and focus of aggressive cattle breeders that had a vision along with our ASA staff. We changed many of those perceptions and reali-ties. Today the Simmental breed has positioned itself to be the number one choice of the continental breeds.

Why the change of attitude among commercial cattlemen, feeders and packers? The reason is, we have changed. The breed has changed andtoday we have cattle that are very prediciatable in calving ease, color, polled traits and still we maintained excellent growth and improved ouroverall mature size and increased the efficiency and profit ability of the Simmental breed, but at the same time I am concerned some breedersare forgetting the past and are putting more birth weight and mature size and frame back into their genetics. I don’t want to go back there againand I don’t feel that you do either.

Today the buzz word is CARCASS. How do we fit into the beef industries picture? Very well as a whole, but we need to keep improving our cattlein each and every generation.

Today our industry has very little margin for error. We as producers of food have very tight margins for profit and still the perception of the vastmajority of the world’s population is food is to high priced, they donít understand or care what it takes. All they want is to be fed economically.

So how do we improve and keep up with technology and the fast paced demands that the world presents and still stay profitable? It seems likeit was just yesterday that ultrasound came into the picture, some felt it was gospel, some feel it is not very accurate and some don’t care. Somefeel that we lost our efficiency in our cow herds due to high selection of carcass traits. Some claim they have all the answers, sometimes I won-der if anyone knows.

Now along comes genomic testing, the test where a little blood, hair, or DNA can tell us ancestry, color, horned or polled, genetic defects, andnow they claim they can separate the good and bad for carcass quality, feed efficiency, disposition, and so much more.

Is this sound science that will make you more profitable or just a sales pitch to make the genomic companies wealthy?

Back in 1974 I was a senior in high school, I was active in 4-H and FFA, and I knew that cows and Ag was what I wanted to do. I didn’t have anyidea or clue that 35 years later the world would be revolving at the fast pace that it is today. Heck, we didn’t even have computers or cell phones.

Do I enjoy my choice of life? Yes I do. Am I over whelmed at what it cost to do business? At times. Will I use the technology available to build abetter product? I will. But, how do we and our customers analyze all the data that is available today? How do we leave enough money in thebank to pay our bills? All good questions, all hard to answer.

What I do know is we still need to produce a product that will support our families and the people in Ag. This product has to be easy to handle, easy to calve, produce a profit and be accepted by the rancher, the order buyer, the feeder, packer and the consumer. Now that’s not such a bigorder is it?

Respectfully yours,

Bill Begger

This year proved to be a good one, the grass was plenty and hay piled up. This pastfall was very busy and the grazing was at its best late into the fall. It seemed like wewere behind in our fall work, and so we never pulled the bull calves off the cows inSeptember as usual, we finally pulled them off the cows on October 8th, so theywere put on gain test 5 weeks later than normal. I believe that they may be a littlelighter than usual, but I feel that they are in excellent shape and are expressing theirgenetic potential well. This set of calves has been a super set to work around, theyare very easy to work with and have a very calm disposition as a whole. We havebeen feeding them a TMR of corn, peas, and a pellet vitamin pack from HubbardFeeds, along with ground hay and haylage. They have had no health issues at all. They have been put through the test as far as weather conditions are concerned, bigswing in the temp certainly is not the most desirable feeding conditions. Therewere days when the temperature swing went from 30 above, to -20 to -30 degreesbelow zero in 12 hours, and then back the other way a few days later, I don’t knowit seems like this pattern lasted all winter. How they can handle these swings andchanges as well as they have, but they definitely handled these conditions better thanwe could have expected. These cattle were born and raised in extreme conditionsand are the proof that when mother nature throws you the worst, they can surviveeven the harshest winter weather. Please note that the spring born bulls have neverate a bite of creep feed in their life, and they still posted excellent weaning weights. On test they were set up to gain about 3.5 a day, they have exceeded the average onthe ration designed to gain 3.5 I believe this is a testament to the efficiency youcan expect these bulls to possess.

The fall bulls likewise were put through a tough winter on the cows, and spring wasvery sloppy, so it was hard to get them weaned and put on test like we would haveliked. We felt that they would be better served left out on the cow, then in a sloppywet yard. For this reason the test on these bulls was very short. They were weanedand put back out on grass within 3 weeks of weaning, they were never supplement-ed other than lick tubs until they were brought back in late October to be condi-tioned for the sale. They we very sound and are not over fatted, they will be readyfor heavy service.

You may notice that there is a bigger age span in the fall born this year, we had abull get injured and we never noticed that he was not getting cows serviced. When Ifinally realized it, these cows were either going to be open or I had to put anotherbull in and get the bred for November calving. Only the cows in that pasture wereexposed that late, most did get bred. For this reason, there is a pen of young agedfall born. This past year all of those cows caught back up and all calved by the endof October, showing the fertility they possess.

We believe that when cattle are expected to work for a living and are not pampered, they will become a better more profitable animal. It seems that when you over feedor pamper cows, they seem to expect a hand out every time the conditions are lessthan favorable. Thus costing you more to keep them going. Yes we do put up hayand feed , and yes we do use it, when it is necessary.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are themost accurate and effective tool available for comparinggenetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between twosires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in theperformance of their progeny. For example, if sires Aand B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit differencewould be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to+10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing whatunits they are expressed in. For example, if the abovecase referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would beexpected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight thanB. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected tosire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calfheifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A per-centile-ranking chart is required to determine where abull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed informationabout EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposedunder an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for moredetails.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births whenused on heifers.Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassistedbirths in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of wean-ing weight due to milk and growth.Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds offorce required to shear a steak.Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining inthe cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under aterminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison ofgenetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’swhere $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rig-orous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDsand economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact onyour bottom line. The same technology that led to thedramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy geneticsover the last several decades was used to develop the fol-lowing $ indexes:All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use onthe entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifersand mature cows) with the portion of their daughtersrequired to maintain herd size retained and the remain-ing heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade andyield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on matureAngus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold gradeand yield.Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use;if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference betweenbulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars percow exposed.) The difference can be used to determinehow much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, putanother way, how much you can pay for one bull com-pared to another. For example, when buying an all-pur-pose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if bothare exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required todetermine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative toother bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or moredetailed information about EPDs and $ indexes.

2014 Livestock Guide dedicated to memory of Terry Robinson

By Mark Conlon, Editor.

Farm & Ranch Guide lost one of its family members last spring when Terry Robinson, long-time livestock sales representative, died suddenly. For the past 30 years this page was set aside for Terry to talk about what he thought were important topics for the livestock industry and to“visit” with his friends and customers. Last years Terry’s column was particularly poignant and eerily ironic as he wrote about what wasimportant to him as an individual. In it he “talked” about the passing of a dear friend and fellow producer and the importance of the legacywe all leave behind.

“The events of this past year, and especially this fall, have reminded me to be keenly aware and very appreciative of the life and the gifts we aregiven,” he began his editorial. “It is easy to look at others and be envious, to look across the fence and feel like others get the better breaks inlife. It is easy to be blind to the really important things in life and forget those things that are so precious. And it has been uncomfortablyscarred on me how quickly life can change, how quickly it can be gone and how truly unimportant many things are when it happens.”

He talked about the example of his friend, how he treated people and how all people should treat each other. He talked about how one isremembered and what it means to him:

“We are all going out with exactly what we came in with. What we own, what we have earned, how many we have of this and how many ofthat is not going to matter. The only thing that will really matter is the memory that others will have of us. Just one ‘he was a good man’would be priceless”

Little did anyone know the events that would transpire just five months later and that hundreds of people would be gathering at his funeral tosay just that: “Terry Robinson was a good man.”

This year we will be missing one of our most pleasantand dedicated ring men. The world lost one of its finest,Terry Robinson was always first class, had a big smile,

always gave 100% to whatever he was doing, he was thebest. He was proud to serve his country for several yearsin the North Dakota National Guard. Terry touched the

lives of each and every one of us, through the service tohis country and on an individual basis. When Terry was

around us, we felt good inside and out. Terry you were agood man, thanks for letting us be part of your circle.
