BEFORE YOUR SURGERYYou play an important role in your health. Because skin is not sterile, you can reduce the number of germs on your skin by carefully washing the night before and on the day of sur-gery for a total of two showers or baths.

Shower: _____ p.m. _____ a.m.

• You will need to shower with a special soap called chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG). CHG shower solution will be provided to you at your pre-operative testing visit. If you are allergic to chlorhexidine, use an antibacterial soap (such as DIAL®) for your shower. You can use your normal shampoo product.

• Turn the water off before applying CHG soap to prevent rinsing it off too soon.

• Apply CHG to a wet cloth and lather your body from the neck down only. DO NOT USE CHG NEAR EYES, EARS OR GENITAL AREA.

DAY OF SURGERYArrivalYour scheduled surgery time or arrival time may change. You will be notified by the surgery department, or by your surgeon’s office, of any changes made to your surgery time or to your arrival time. We know your time is valuable. Should a delay occur on the day of your surgery, we will make every effort to keep you and your family informed.

Arrive at Zone 2, Outpatient Center (Entrance 6) and check in at the surgery and endoscopy reception desk.

Speak upIf at any time you have a concern or a question, please speak up. You are the reason we are here. We take your safety very seriously and have adopted these practices as part of our culture of safety.

HistoryWe will review your medical history again in the ambulatory surgery department.

MedicationWe will review all of your medications and when you took them last. This includes any over-the-counter medication and herbal supplements. Patients taking herbs may be at risk for herb-anesthesia interactions. Please let your doctor and nurse know if you are taking any herbal medications prior to the day of surgery.

SafetyWe want you to have a safe surgical experience. Here are the things we’ll do to keep you safe while you are in our care.

• Check your identity: We will ask you to state your name and date of birth several times and will check your armband many times. We want to make sure everything is correct. Staff members may ask you other questions more than once, such as:

• When was the last time you had anything to eat or drink?

• What are your allergies?

• What are your medications?

• What procedure are you having performed?

• Wash our hands: We will use hand hygiene before and after we touch you or your bed linens. This is the best way to prevent infection. Do not hesitate to remind a caregiver to wash their hands if you have any concerns.

• Monitor your vital signs: We will watch your temperature, heart rate and blood pressure closely during surgery. We want to make sure you do not develop a fever or have any type of reaction. A special monitor is used to ensure that you will remain asleep during your procedure.

• Mark your surgical site: Your doctor will write the word “yes” with a marker near the area where the incision will be made. He or she wants to communicate to all team members exactly where the surgery will be performed.

• Perform a “safety check” and “time out” before starting your procedure: The pre-op nurse and the surgical nurse will perform a safety check before you go back to surgery. You will be asked to participate. We will go over all your information again. The surgical team will also take a “time out” before starting your procedure to review and verify your identity, the procedure being performed, any known allergies, any antibiotics or other medications needed, and any other important information the team needs to know.

• Administer antibiotics: We may give you antibiotics before surgery to prevent infection, depending on your condition and procedure.

• Prevent blood clots: Also depending on your condition and procedure, your doctor may order support stockings and special air sleeves to be placed on your legs during surgery and while you are in the hospital. These lower your risk of blood clots by helping to keep blood flowing. Additional clot-preventing medications may be ordered.

DietPlease do not eat or drink anything – not even water or chewing gum – after midnight the night before your surgery. This is sometimes referred to as “NPO” on the doctor’s instructions sheet. Not eating or drinking decreases the risk of vomiting stomach contents into the lungs, which could cause pneumonia, lung damage or death.

Not following this rule may result in your surgery being canceled or delayed.
