Combat spring weeds while you still can. One of the most common mistakes farmers make is spraying too late. Just because you can’t see weeds in your pasture doesn’t mean they’re not there. Spring germinating weeds can be present under the pasture cover as seedlings and smaller plants. Following grazing, the seedling weeds are exposed to sunlight and are likely to develop in the pasture to the point where they will be severely production limiting. If these weeds are left until they are mature and flowering, then it’s too late. They will be very difficult, if not impossible to control. Nufarm has all the products you need to combat your spring weeds. Identify young weeds with the help of this guide, and protect your pasture by spraying early this Spring. Go for it. BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE Baton Provides effective control of most common spring germinating weeds. Non volatile 2,4-D granule formulation packed in water soluble bags. Spring Weed Controltechniques, products and methods to reclaim pasture from spring weeds

FREE

Oxeye Daisy A perennial weed that becomes more prominent in the spring. Often found in open pastures and on sidelings. Not an easy weed to control, but where a tank mix of Baton and Valdo plus Bonza is used, more consistent levels of control are achieved.

Canadian Fleabane Prolific and fast growing, it prefers light soils and can withstand dry conditions. Seedlings can germinate in both spring and autumn. Spray at seedling to small rosette with Baton®.

Buttercup Most common in dairy pastures, particularly on less free draining soil types. Creeping and giant buttercup can be particularly invasive and are not easy to control. Preferred pasture spraying option is Valdo® plus Bonza® applied preflowering.

StorksbillBecoming more prevalent, especially in dairy pastures. Eczema like symptoms in cattle linked to grazing on storksbill infested pastures. Baton provides effective levels of control up to small rosette stage, but more mature plants may only be suppressed.

DandelionEffective control is only possible during the seedling stage because the plant is both deep rooted and perennial. Once sprayed, dandelion plants can take several weeks to die.

PennyroyalNow prevalent in many areas and different soil types and becoming predominant in run out pastures. Invasive and highly unpalatable to stock, but well controlled by Baton. Best results from applications made pre flowering.

DocksSeedling dock is a common pasture weed, particularly in spring-sown pastures. Baton is the best choice for control, at the 2–4 leaf seedling size.

Hedge Mustard Can be a problem in newly sown or open pastures. Seedlings form rosettes that can quickly turn into flowering stems over a metre high. Apply Baton at seedling to rosette stage.

Willow weedMainly found on heavier soil types and peat land. Invasive weed capable of smothering productive species in both established and spring sown new pasture. Baton is effective on seedling willow weed. This weed is often mistaken for water pepper, which is similar in appearance, but harder to control.

The productive life of a perennial pasture is to some extent dependant on limiting the negative effect of weeds as early as possible. Some weeds are linked to animal health issues and all weeds compete with productive pasture species for light, space and soil nutrients.

*Will be well controlled by either Baton or Valdo and Bonza application.
