Sometimes it's hard to know if your child is really coming down with something or just suffering a bout of Monday-itis. For safe- ty's sake, (and the risk of spread- ing germs to others) if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice. Staff Changes It is with sadness and joy that I have to announce that Jenna Clarke is leaving us at the end of this semester, to have her baby. Jenna will be missed by staff and students, she really is a fantastic PE teacher, but we wish her all the very best in this next new adventure in her life. I am very happy to announce that Rebecca McCasker will take on the role of PE teacher until the end of the year. It is with pleasure that I welcome Amy Allatt to Bees Creek, replacing Rebecca as the B4 teacher. Amy Allatt complet- ed her last practicum as a Pre-Service teacher at Bees Creek last year and worked with most of the (current) children in B4 with Mrs Hester. Goodbyes Again – it is with sadness but at the same time happiness for them, that we say goodbye to two families who have made significant contributions to the school, at the end of this semester. We wish Aleka Freijah and partner Richard and the children Sebastian, Mia and Tahlia all the very best in their exciting adventure to Samoa. Aleka has been involved with the school council for a number of years in various roles and of course, as Council Chair this year. We also wish Katrina Walker and partner Stephen and the children Sean, Aiden and Hugh (and Caitlin!) all the absolute best in their next adventure, travelling to WA. Katrina has also been heavily involved with the School Council and has performed miracles with her amazing fundraising efforts over the years. Both families will be missed. Semester One 2016 What an amazing first semester …. My how time flies when you are having fun! I feel like we have done a lot in a short period of time. Here’s a summary of just some of the many successes we have achieved this semester; 3 Every student at Bees Creek now has a minimum of one Reading goal and one Maths goal at any one time – ask your child about their goals and how they are going about achieving them. 3 Teachers are feeling more confident with their practice of NZ Maths after our NZ consultant’s visit at the beginning of this term, whereby teachers got to work one on one with Carol and we all got to benefit from her training as a whole teaching staff on the pupil free day. 3 A front pathway that leads from the main car park, straight to reception. 3 Funding for an entire, whole school, new air-conditioning system. 3 Funding to re-surface the basket-ball courts. 3 Funding to have all carpets replaced in A, B and C block and the front office. 3 A continued focus on Visible Learning strategies to ensure our students are assessment capable learners. 3 Upgraded sound system in the hall. 3 The numerous entries to Fred’s Pass Show. 3 Participation in the REACH (Rural Enrichment Academic Challenge) program: Dance in Term 1 and Science in Term 2. 3 Participation in the instrumental Play Day at Howard Springs. Holidays It has been a very productive term and everyone is now looking forward to the holidays. I wish everyone a safe, fun-filled break. For those of you going on a road trip, I thought I would give you some ideas for games in the car, please see the article on page 4! See you all in Semester 2, ready to do it all over again! BYE BYE EVERYONE As most of you know by now (if not SURPRISE) I am expecting a baby very soon and will be finishing up at Bees Creek at the end of this term. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at Bees Creek and it’s very sad that I am leaving but I promise to come back and visit every now and then in between my new mum duties. I would like to thank everyone here at Bees Creek for the past 3 and a half years I have loved teaching

all of you and will miss every-one greatly!

PARRS ATHLETICS Last Friday the 10th of June a small group of students along with myself, Mrs Logan and Hugh (SEDA Student) walked to Fred’s Pass Reserve to compete in the PARRS Athletics. It was a terrific day with many students winning ribbons on the day and gaining points for our school. Everyone was well behaved on the day in representing our school, well done everyone! Thankyou to Hugh for coming along and assisting with running of events and Mrs Logan for joining us for the day and helping with track events as well. Ribbons will be handed out to those students once they arrive at school.

Preschool News W e m a d e s n a i l s a t Preschool. They were yummy! We had a choice of cheese, vegemite, or ham on our snails. Some of us put all 3 ingredients in our snail and the ate it. When the snails were cooked we all had a picnic at “Big School”

Library News Thank you to parents and guardians for helping the children locate their overdue library books. Have a wonderful holiday. Enjoy and keep safe. Cheers, Sylvia Dickson

On Friday, June 3rd the students in 5/6 Purdue did an amazing job running a ‘notables’ afternoon to showcase their research work on eminent people involved in the federation of Australia and key events that helped shape our nation. The s t u den t s worked extremely hard throughout the term both at school and at home to put together their p r e s e n t a t i o n s a n d displays. We had an overwhelming response to the night and students thoroughly enjoyed sharing their learning with visitors.

P A G E 4 5 Road Trip Games By Jonathon Ramsey I Spy with my little eye Perhaps the granddaddy of road trip games, this twist on Twenty Questions can be huge fun or hugely frustrating depending on the spymaster's eye. The first head spy declares "I spy with my little eye," and then offers one hint about the object in question, such as "something spotted." Players then ask yes-or-no questions to determine what that spotted thing might be.

R o a d T r i p B i n g o A game of quick vision as opposed to Holmes-like deduction, we loved Road Trip Bingo but it was, admittedly, more involved as it required actual props. As opposed to good old classic Bingo that your aunt plays in Boca, Road Trip Bingo had objects (think cows, churches and stop signs as the gold) on its cards as opposed to numbers. The rules of the game were simple: when you saw an object out the window that was on your card, you marked it with a penny or the loose piece of animal cracker you've been saving since Ohio. The first one to fill up a card wins, yells Bingo and the top of her lungs and

watches as her siblings seethe with jealousy.

A is for Armadillo A test of concentration, this game runs through the alphabet with each person assigning a word to the 26 letters, and the following person has to repeat the previous letters and words then add another. Beginning with "A is for alphabet," the next person says "A is for alphabet, B is for bowling," and so on. Perhaps the only game we have never heard of being successfully completed from A-to-Z, you'll want to beware of playing this game with Scrabble masters.

A l p h a b e t Another alphabet game that might appear to be much easier than A is for Armadillo, all this one requires you to do is find the letters of the alphabet in order on road signs or license plates. It can be played in succession-one person finds the letter A, the next finds the letter B-or concurrently, with the first person to find the letter getting the credit. It's all fun and games until you get to

fringe letters like Q and X, and you'd be surprised how hard letters like K and V are to find in some parts of the country. For added difficulty if you've got a long way to drive, play with numbers instead, finding them up to the number 30 in succession.

C o w P o k e r First off: this is only about counting cows. Players are divided into left side and right side, and the two sides count the cows they see on their side of the road. If you drive by a cemetery, then the team on the same side as the cemetery loses all of its cows and has to start over from zero. In its original bovine form, this game is probably best played in the remaining parts of the country where cows still roam. Nevertheless, you're even less likely to find cows and ceme-teries on the same stretch of highway anymore, so you can subst i tute ob jects l i ke billboards or tractors for cows, and a particular-yet-rare gas station, like Esso or Gulf, for the cemetery. But keep the name Cow Poker. You can never substitute that.

As many of you know, the end of this term sees us saying farewell to our wonderful School Council Chairperson Aleka Freijah. Aleka has worked tirelessly over the last four and a half years to represent the schoo l community and contribute to the excel lent learning environment we have at Bees Creek Primary School. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Aleka for her time on school council and for her contribution to our school. You will be much missed and we look forward to your return in due time.

Aleka has now handed over the reins of School Council Chairperson to myself and I am looking forward to being able to represent the school community in this role. I joined the school council 18 months ago when we moved to Darwin and my children started attending the school. I was blown away then and I am still in awe now of how involved and dedicated the Bees Creek Primary School community, the teachers, sup-port staff and the school lead-ership are towards ensuring that our children have the best educational environment

to develop and learn. I chose to be involved in school council as a way of contributing to and supporting this wonderful learning environment as well as staying informed. School council meetings are open for all the school community to attend (not just members of council) and are excellent opportuni-ties to gain insight into what is happening at the school. Meetings are held in the staffroom on the third Tuesday evening of the month. M a r i s s a V e t t e r . School Chair

A Message from our School Chair Thank you We would once again like to thank The Honourable Kezia Purick MLA and Gerry Wood MLA for their wonderful donation of a Hot Pass for the upcoming V8 Supercars.

We placed all of our parent helpers from this year in a raffle to decide who the passes would go to.

The winners were:

E k a t e r i n i S a r o u k o s Sharna Crockett

Thank you both Kezia & Gerry for your continual support of our school.

Fishing Competition With the fishing competition well under way, we have decided to have a competition within the competition.

Everyone who has entered the fishing competition will go into a draw to win some of the fabulous vouchers we have received. We will be giving away a family pass to the Territory Wildlife Park, $20 vouchers for the Tackle Box NT, $25 vouchers for BCF.

The school holidays are just around the corner, so come in to the office and register for the comp. Everyone who is registered at 3pm on Monday 20th June will go into the draw.

The fishing competition runs until 14th October and is only $15 to register. We have some awesome prizes, so if you are a keen fisher person you’d be foolish not to enter.
