Truck DriverRobbed of sterOn 101 Highway
Something new in broad day light armed robbery was exec uted here Thursday noon when Edward C. Cole, Los Angeles, driver of a cleaning delivery truck, was stopped on Pacific Coast highway near Crenshaw blvd. and relieved of $160 incurrency.
Cole explained to Torrance
I drove alongside of his vehicle and motioned to the front wheel. Thinking something was wrong with the truck, the driver pulled over and stopped. The robbers, in an old V-8 Ford according to Cole, drove to the side ano front of his truck as it halted.
"It took'me completely by sur prise," the victim told officers "one of the pair got out of trio car and shoved a 45 automatic right under my nose, and de manded,- 'pull out your, wallet,' which I did."
Cole said the gunman then demanded that he open it, and, according to the truck driver, no time was lost in complying with the order. The robber then reached into the wallet and withdrew Its contents, $160 in cash.
Telling Cole to remain where he was for five minutes, the

Gunman Assaults Girl As Escort Bound, Robbed
A 18-year-old high school girl Sunday in the Palos Verdes area was criminally assaulted by a man in Army clothing who, ac cording to police, surprised the victim and her male friend while they sat in an automobile on Mlraleste drive.
Officers withheld the -girl's identity, also that of her mail companion, 21 years'old.
Statements given by the pair indicated that the girl's attacker carried a 38 caliber revolver and a three-foot crowbar. Taking $3 from the girl's purse and $136 from her escort, the gunman forced his youthful victim tc tie up her friend with his own pocket handkerchief and neok tie, investigators reported.
He then ordered -the girl at gun point into a nearby field, where she was forced to sub mit to the criminal assault, police said.

Atom Scientist's Talk To Feature Cal. Alumni Meet
Southern California alumni of he University of California gather Saturday at the Blltmore Hotel, Los Angeles, to hear President Robert Gordon Sproul address the 26th annual Alumni Institute.
Following a theme of "The World, the University and You," ho institute will also present
experts on foreign affairs, atom- research and the domestic
economic situation.President Sproul will discuss
the post-war role of the univer sity, while Judge Stanley N. Barnes, of Los Angeles, presi dent of the California Alumni Association, will report on his organization. Student activities on the crowded Berkeley cam pus will be described by Ed .Welch, president of the Asso ciated Students.
Faculty speakers will be Rob ert J. Kerner, Sather professor of history; Ira B. Cross, profes sor of economics on the Flood foundation; Luis B. Alvarez, professor of physics and Melvln Calvin, associate professor of chemistry.
Drunk Drivers In Torrance Pay Heavy Fines
Drunk drivers in Torrance over the holidays paid $776 m fines, according to ctly court records, which revealed two pf the six arrested forfeited balls totaling $300. Forfeiting fines were- Wilmer Gillette, Wilming-l ton, $160, and Vera Volk, Re- dondo Beach; $160. Suspension of both drivers' licenses was or- i dered by the court. '
Others pleading guilty to drlv-| Ing an automobile while drunk were Paul Watson, Long Beach, $126, with $26 suspended; Harry Flynn, 26907 Oak St., $126; Jose J. Vasquez, Wllmington, $190, and George B. Slmpson, Los Angeles, $200, with $100 of that amount suspended.
Slmpson, who ran his auto into a parked police patrol car recently, was ordered to make good the damage done to the] vehicle within the next 30 days, or pay the additional $100 levied.
RECRUITER GIVES REVISED PROGRAM
The U. S. Army Is continuing Its program of re-Instating com bat wounded veterans, according to local Recruiting Sgt. E. M. Bryant. Under this program, 103 military occupational specialties now open, only 23 require pre vious qualified experience. Al though experience Is desirable he said, It Is not essential since the applicant who meets the re vised physical requirement Is given necessary training to make him proficient in the job to which he is assigned.
