Death is not a topic many people prefer to discuss. However, discussing funeral planning and making ar-rangements can be a smart financial move and one that limits large decisions at a time of heightened emo-tions.
Every year millions of people in North America make the decision to pre-plan a funeral. The process is also known as pre-need planning. Individuals can even take out insurance policies that direct benefits to funeral expenses.
The main purpose of pre-need planning is to allevi-ate the financial burden and decision-making during times of grief and stress. Well-executed plans can make the funeral process run like a well-oiled machine.
It’s never too early to begin pre-planning a funeral. Making a list of information that will go to a trusted family member, executor of one’s estate or a funeral director is one way to start. Here are some items to in-clude:
• Name• Date of birth• Place of birth• Social security member• Location of will• Military service• Place of disposition, whether a cemetery or crematorium• Organ donation preferences• Funeral and/or wake preferences• Name of funeral home and director• Copies of receipts and contracts for
any services purchased• Any other important information, such as
location of safety deposit box information, attorney names, etc.
There are very good reasons for pre-need planning. All arrangements can be thoroughly considered and spelled out so they meet a person’s desires. If he or she
has a preference in cemetery or prefers to be interred at a mausoleum, these requests can be expressed and not assumed by family members.
Pre-planning also enables a person to shop around for the most affordable services, caskets and funeral homes. Because the average cost of a funeral is between $10,000 to $15,000, it is important to spend money wisely. Pre-plan-ning also helps avoid inflation of costs later on, enabling a person to lock in the cost of services now.
Stress and grief can make family members unable to cope with decisions during the time of death. As a result, one of the most important reasons for pre-need planning is to make the process one in which close friends and family members can come to grips with the death, rather than having to run around for a few days and make arrangements in haste. This way loved ones can simply remember a person how he or she was instead of choosing clothing, disposition places, ser-vice wording, and the like.
A funeral director can walk a person through the pro-cess of pre-planning a funeral. He or she is often licensed to sell cemetery plots and can take much of the work out of the process. A community or family-owned business may have a rapport in the area and offer the best deals or the desired level of personalized service.

Many people think of therapy dogs as guide dogs lead-ing the blind, or dogs sitting with seniors at an assisted living facility. While therapy dogs are responsible for these jobs, they do so much more -- including acting as a trusted companion for someone diagnosed with cancer.
Although many therapy dogs are specially trained in their roles, just about any well-mannered dog can serve in a therapeutic capacity. People may be surprised at all the many assistance roles dogs can play.
Seizure alert: Some dogs are trained to alert epi-leptics and those with seizure disorders to an upcoming episode, although this method of detection is not always foolproof. In general, seizure dogs provide companionship and security to a person during and after an episode.
CaNCer tHeraPY: Getting diagnosed with cancer can be a stressful event. Going through chemotherapy and radiation can take its toll on the body. Cancer pa-tients often need all of the love and affection they can get or sometimes just a quiet companion. In a program like Pets for Pals, therapy dogs sit with cancer patients, often sensing what ill people need. Dogs have the innate abil-ity to love unconditionally. Having a dog around gives pa-tients a different topic of conversation other than their health and treatment. Petting a dog has been known to lower blood pressure and reduce stress as well.
HelPiNG HaNDS: Individuals who are handi-capped may rely on dogs to do tasks around the house, from turning on lights to grabbing remote controls. Some dogs help companions move around a space by offering stability and a handhold.
SeCuritY: Dogs have long been used as security guards. But even if a dog isn’t a trained guard, he or she can alert if something is amiss in the house or if some-one is at the door or outside of the home. Individuals who live alone can benefit from the companionship and level of security that dogs provide.

At some point in a per-son’s life he or she will spend time in a hospital and have to transition home after re-covery. For seniors this is a common occurrence and one that can be particularly troublesome. A little plan-ning can make the process easier on the patient and the caregiver.
PlaN earlYLearn when the discharge
date will be and find out what will be needed at home. Talk with hospital staff about what equipment can make recovery at home easier. A caregiver may get recom-mendations on nearby medi-cal supply stores and other vendors that can provide what’s needed, such as visit-ing nurses.
rearraNGe tHe HomeCertain things at home
may need to be changed de-pending on why the person was hospitalized. Individu-als with crutches or in a wheelchair may need extra space made in the home to travel safely. If the patient normally sleeps upstairs, a bed may need to be set up downstairs instead. Ramps may need to be installed over stairs as well.

want to be the sole caregiver for a parent or spouse who has left the hospital. But the demand of around the clock care can sometimes be over-whelming. Caregivers should not be embarrassed to ask for help, even if that means hir-ing a professional. Providing the best care for the patient should be the priority.
PatieNt SuPPortThe newly discharged pa-
tient may have mixed feelings about being at home and fawned over. Therefore, caregivers should tread lightly to develop a strategy that works well for everyone.

Medical advancements have enabled people to live longer. Though everyone wants to live longer, some people outlive their abil-ity to care for themselves. In such instances, family members must make a deci-sion regarding how best to care for an elderly relative.
According to “Aging in Place in America,” a commissioned study by Clarity(R) and the EAR Foundation, 63 percent of Baby Boomers are actively involved in providing some kind of help or assistance to their elderly parents. Whether this is due to the ris-ing cost of elder care or simply a feeling of obligation on the part of the child, many middle-aged men and women are responsible for caring for aging parents and young children.
The emotions that might result from caring for an aging parent are often mixed. Some people are happy to do their part to help make life a little easier for a person who devoted so much of his or her energy to raising them. Others in the sandwich generation can feel like this is a burden or guilty that they’re not do-ing enough for a parent.
SiGNS aN elDer NeeDS HelPWhen an older relative stops driving, this is often
indicative that he or she needs assistance with daily living. There also may be signs that support and care is needed, such as if the house seems untidy, if he or she is having trouble maintaining personal hygiene, if the parent is getting hurt attempting to do things around the house or if he or she seems malnourished due to the inability to cook meals. Limited mobility or loss of mental faculties also may be indicative that it is time for a loved one to receive care.
QueStioNS to aSkAlthough taking on the care of an aging parent
may seem like the best idea possible, particularly for a senior who is very afraid of losing his or her inde-pendence, it may not always be in either party’s best interest. Before anyone determines what will be done
to help a relative, it’s best to answer a few questions as straightforwardly as pos-sible.
• What type of care does my parent need?
• How soon into the fu-ture is that type of care bound to change?
• Can this care be han-dled by someone who comes into the house, such as a visiting nurse?
• Will my parent feel comfortable with an out-side person helping with day-to-day care?
• What are my parent’s limitations?• Am Icapable of handling this on my own?• Can I afford an adequate care facility?• What are my local facility options?• Will this type of care affect my own personal well-being?• Can Ihandle this emotionally and physically?
Any person facing the prospect of caring for an aging parent can realize that there is help avail-able, as well as many different people who can help guide a decision. The first resource is to ask siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins to weigh in on the situation to help the family come to a con-sensus.
There are also social workers who specialize in this sort of thing, as well as financial consultants who can spell out the pros and cons of different types of care and help determine the most affordable option. This can also go a long way toward helping determine the course of action.
The burden of caring for a parent can take a physi-cal and mental toll on a person. Knowing there is a support circle available can ease one’s mind and en-able caregivers to make rational decisions that are in everyone’s best interest.
Caring for a loved one who can no longer care for him- or herself is something that many Baby Boomers are facing on a daily basis. Although it may be a touchy subject, it is worth exploring what you will do before the situation becomes urgent.
