Madeline & Sidney Forbes Celebration

Dear Friends of Beaumont Health System,

I hope our second issue of Healthy Giving for 2011, finds you well and

enjoying an exceptional summer season.

Yes, we have a new corporate name, and it’s Beaumont Health System.

This new name communicates the full range of inpatient, outpatient,

community and home-based health care services that we offer. It also

reflects Beaumont’s growth into a regional health network that includes

three hospitals, numerous outpatient medical centers and a medical school.

So far this year, the Foundation’s calendar has been filled with numerous

fundraising, recognition and cultivation events. The following pages will

acquaint you with some of these celebrations.

In this issue, we are highlighting the generosity of Wayne and Joan Webber.

We are very grateful for their support of Beaumont Hospital, Troy and the

Wayne & Joan Webber Imaging Center within the Beaumont Medical Center,

Macomb Township.

We’re also looking at the impact of two centers that would not exist without

philanthropy — the Women’s Urology Center and the Ghesquiere Family

Center for Children’s Surgery.

On behalf of the Foundation and Beaumont Health System, I extend my

deepest gratitude for your continued support.

With warmest regards and sincere appreciation,

Margaret Cooney Casey

President, Beaumont Foundation

“Nearly 60 percent of the patients who come to Beaumont, Troy reside in Macomb County and thousands of others are served at the Beaumont Medical Center, Macomb. The Webbers’ generosity will enhance care for residents of their home county and all others who come to us for care,” said Gene Michalski, Beaumont Health System president and CEO.

Giving is not new to the Webbers. In 2006, they were honored with the Max M. Fisher Award for Outstanding Philanthropists by the Association of Fundraising Professionals — Greater Detroit Chapter. They have always believed in sharing their blessings and this generosity led to the Fisher Award.

“The Webber Foundation has a long history of philanthropy in this community, funding health care, education and programs that feed the hungry throughout metropolitan Detroit. Their concern for improving the health status of Macomb County residents was the primary motivation for this exceptional gift. We are deeply grateful to Wayne and Joan Webber for underwriting these two vital programs and bringing this leading-edge technology to Macomb County,” said Margaret Cooney Casey, president of the Beaumont Foundation.

The Wayne & Joan Webber Imaging Center features Beaumont’s first completely open MRI, which makes

the latest magnetic resonance imaging technology available to patients in Macomb. Open MRI technology offers patients an enhanced level of comfort and speed during testing without diminishing imaging precision. The Wayne & Joan Webber Cardiac Progressive Care Center is a 32-bed stepdown unit that has significantly enhanced care and treatment for cardiac patients at Beaumont, Troy. The center, which opened in September 2010, is staffed by a team of highly trained nurses and doctors who specialize in cardiac care and features state-of-the-art monitoring equipment. Progressive care units are a “step down” from intensive care for patients who require closer monitoring than is provided on a regular inpatient unit.

“We are very fortunate to have Wayne and Joan Webber give such a generous gift to Beaumont in support of programs that serve Macomb County. Their loyalty and philanthropic spirit are inspiring,” said Tom Brisse, president, Beaumont, Troy.

“My wife and I have been extremely blessed in so many ways and it is an honor to be able to share our blessings with Beaumont,” said Wayne Webber.

Janet A. & H. Richard Fruehauf Jr. CelebrationOn May 25, 2011, despite ominous clouds, high winds and torrential rain, friends and family gathered at Beaumont, Grosse Pointe to celebrate the generosity of Janet A. & H. Richard Fruehauf Jr. Because of the inclement weather, the event was moved indoors near the healing garden.

“Our entire Beaumont Family is deeply grateful to the Fruehaufs for making possible the new Janet A. & H. Richard Fruehauf Jr. Center for Orthopaedic Medicine. What an outstanding example of commitment you have established for this hospital and the Beaumont organization,” said Gene Michalski, president and CEO of Beaumont Health System.

“Mom and Dad always cared deeply about the community in which we were raised,” said son, Ken Freuhauf. “This gift is a small way of giving back to those around us. Their generosity is really in character with how they have raised us and run their business.”

“Janet’s and Dick’s gift will provide upgrades in our patients’ rooms and a new gymnasium, which will help with the recovery process. Our patients will be able to go home sooner, walk farther at discharge, recover faster and experience less pain and discomfort,” said Rick Swaine, president, Beaumont, Grosse Pointe.

“In four years, we have been able to raise close to 10 million philanthropic dollars in support of Beaumont, Grosse Pointe. A significant amount has come from the leaders of this community who are devoted to this hospital… donors such as Janet and Dick,” said Margaret Cooney Casey, Beaumont Foundation president.

Janet A. & H. Richard Fruehauf Jr. Celebration Beaumont Women’s Urology Center – One Year LaterWhen the Women’s Urology Center opened in May 2010, no one had any idea that word would spread so quickly and transform the lives of hundreds of women seeking help. As one of the few centers in the country dedicated solely to the physical and psychological needs of women coping with a range of urological disorders, the center has become an exceptional treatment destination.

The Women’s Urology Center is the result of a vision long held by Kenneth Peters, M.D., chairman of the Department of Urology at Beaumont, Royal Oak and the extraordinary generosity of Susan E. Cooper, a member of the Beaumont Health System and Beaumont Foundation boards. Her $5 million gift enabled Dr. Peters and his staff to create a warm and comforting environment for patients. Nearly 400 new patients have been treated at the center in its first year, averaging more than 30 new patients per month. Patients returning to complete their treatments accounted for nearly 550 visits during the same period.

Before the center opened, many of these women had spent months or years searching for a diagnosis and cure. At the center, their concerns are addressed with dignity and respect.

One former patient said, “The nurse practitioner talked with me in depth. She was warm, helpful and made me feel very comfortable. For the first time, I felt like someone was listening to me.” That kind of attentiveness is at the core of the center’s success. “We try to create an environment that makes patients feel safe and where their concerns are heard,” said Donna Carrico, the center’s nurse practitioner. While most of the patients come from metro Detroit, a significant number travel from northern Michigan and other states, including Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio, California and even Ontario, Canada.

One patient, who had been coping with interstitial cystitis for more than 30 years said, “I was most impressed with the expertise I found at the Women’s Urology Center. I had gone to the Cleveland Clinic and the University of Michigan, but the most informed physicians were at Beaumont.”

Now in its second year, with continued growth expected, the center remains committed to the health and well-being of its patients with these debilitating and difficult conditions. It is well positioned to treat and care for women with urological concerns.

On May 17th, the South Tower concourse at Royal Oak was transformed into a vision of black and gold elegance created to celebrate the generosity of Madeline and Sidney Forbes. Nearly 250 guests and family members arrived with feelings of love, warmth, humor and goodwill for Sid and Maddie.

The Forbes made a gift of $4 million to name the Madeline & Sidney Forbes Family Orthopaedic Center at Beaumont, Royal Oak. The center is the largest inpatient unit on the campus with 114 beds. It includes a dedicated joint replacement center, a rehabilitation unit, and offers general orthopaedic services for patients with traumatic injuries, spine disorders, orthopaedic cancer and diseases of the bone.

“We are thrilled that the Forbes family name will be forever linked to Beaumont Hospital and Beaumont Orthopaedics,” said Harry Herkowitz, M.D., chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak and professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.

“This gift exemplifies Sid and Maddie’s commitment to this community,” said Walter Wolpin, chair of The Campaign for Beaumont Hospitals.

A five-piece ensemble played in the background as long-time friends greeted the Forbes and shared good wishes, excellent food and hearty laughs.

Surrounded by children and grandchildren, Madeline Forbes thanked everyone for attending the celebration. “We’ve always felt that Beaumont is a very special place for our family. Actually, we’ve spent many hours in the Beaumont ER with our children,” she added.

“Our family is very proud to support the Orthopaedic Center at Beaumont. We salute Beaumont Health System for everything they give to our community by operating such an exceptional facility,” said Sid.

The Forbes family gift will be used for equipment, patient education and research initiatives that will ensure that our patients continue to receive the finest orthopaedic care.

“I have learned that not only are they charming and delightful people, they are also very thoughtful in their deliberations about how they can best support the community in which they live,” said Margaret Cooney Casey, Beaumont Foundation president.

Stephen Howard, chair of the Beaumont Board of Directors, said, “It’s humbling to think about what philanthropists like you have helped us to accomplish for Beaumont and this community.”

When the evening’s celebration ended, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Madeline and Sidney Forbes were not only generous with their giving, but also abundantly blessed with a loving family and friends.

Barbara and Chuck Ghesquiere met while attending Grosse Pointe South High School. “He was the older one.” Barbara said laughing. They dated for a while and then parted ways. Two years later, on Barbara’s graduation night, they reconnected. “We’ve been together ever since,” she said.

Married now for 57 years, the Ghesquieres have two daughters, two sons, 12 grandchildren and one great grandson. The grandchildren and great grandson were all born at Beaumont. Their daughters-in-law Patty and Jennifer Ghesquiere are actively involved with Beaumont. Patty is a hospital trustee, member of the Troy Committee and vice chair of the Community Relations Committee. Jennifer was a member of the Backyard Edventure Committee. Their connection to Beaumont is through their love of children.

“I can’t tell you how many comments I get in the showroom about the Ghesquiere Family Center for Children’s Surgery. People love the walk-over bridge from the parking deck, too. I hear about that as well,” said Chuck.

“Before the Ghesquiere Family Center for Children’s Surgery, no one was kid specific,” said Alicia Mansell, administrative

nurse manager for the center. “After the center was built, we brought in specially trained pediatric nurses who could also handle complicated pediatric cases. We also have pediatric anesthetists and anesthesiologists. The surgical techs are trained in pediatric care. It’s all about the kids,” Alicia said.

Red wagons are used to transport the younger patients along the corridors that are decorated with a child-friendly theme. There’s a painted river on the floor to follow as well as stars twinkling above. Nearly 14,000 surgeries have been performed in the center since it opened in 2007.

The preoperative area has DVD players with movies and cartoons to keep the children entertained,” Alicia added.

“Kids are very important to us. A few years ago, Margaret Casey made a presentation about the center. I was so moved by it, I wrote a significant pledge on the back of a business card and pushed it across the table to her,” said Chuck. Construction on the Ghesquiere Family Center for Children’s Surgery began a few months later.

That card is still hanging on the bulletin board over Margaret Casey’s desk.

For the Schostak family, their recent $1 million leadership gift to the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine was in keeping with their longstanding tradition of giving back to the community.

“We have a set of core values for our business and for our family. One of those core values is giving back and investing in our community. You have a responsibility, if you are able, to give back to your community whether in education, health care or the arts,” said David Schostak, speaking on behalf of The Schostak Family Support Foundation.

The gift allowed the family to make a lasting impact on two organizations that were important to them personally. “My brother Bob is a graduate of OU, so Oakland was on our radar screen,” said David. “And Beaumont is a pillar of our community. We all have a connection to it. The concept of doing something that brought both of these organizations together was appealing.”

Of equal importance for the Schostaks was the role they see the medical school playing in the region’s economic future. “We view this school as a growth engine for Southeast Michigan,” Schostak said.

With this gift, the Schostak family has made an investment in the long-term success of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. “This gift will have a far-reaching impact on the school, its faculty and students, one which will make a very real difference as the school grows and evolves. This type of leadership gift is deeply appreciated, and we are very grateful to the entire Schostak family,” said Margaret Casey, president of the Beaumont Foundation.

The Schostak family has supported a wide variety of civic and charitable organizations throughout metro Detroit, including The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Detroit Institute of Arts and Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan. They also have provided scholarships and other support for institutions, such as the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and its constituent agencies, Oakland University, Wayne State University and the University of Michigan.

For children with illnesses or injury, the simple joys of childhood can be lost in a sea of admissions and treatments. To make this journey less stressful, funds from Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) are used to create new pediatric programs and services, purchase vital equipment and provide treatment scholarships for families who are unable to afford care. Beaumont Children’s Hospital is the only CMN-affiliated hospital in Southeast Michigan. CMN is a national alliance of premier hospitals dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children’s hospitals across America. The CMN designation combined with the national reputation of Beaumont Health System has created a comprehensive, community-based fundraising campaign that touched the lives of more than 50,000 children and families in the nine counties of Southeast Michigan last year alone.

Our sponsors, several of whom have national ranking with CMN, are committed to Beaumont and its programs. They invested their time, talent and gifts totaling more than $3 million to support 43 programs or projects at Beaumont Children’s Hospitals. The following are some of the departments that received assistance with CMN funds:

2010 CMN Support for Beaumont’s Children’s Hospital

On May 12, Beaumont’s Children’s Hospital hosted the 96.3 WDVD Cares for Kids Radiothon Presented by Foresters at the Royal Oak hospital. More than $115,000 was raised over a 13-hour period and will help fund pediatric services.

The radiothon broadcast originated from the South Tower concourse and featured 13 miracle families who shared their stories with the audience. Previous radiothons at Beaumont

have raised funds to support the purchase of equipment, specially adapted bikes, pediatric scholarship funds, and Comfort Care Kits used by hospital patients.

There were 76 Beaumont team volunteers who answered the phones and recorded the donations.
