ctober is the beginning of my favorite time of year. It’s “hopefully” the beginning of, dare I say, cooler weather and the start of the three
month holiday season. October is also Breast Cancer Aware-
ness Month. Breast cancer has affected so many lives in our community. I think it would be a
fairly safe bet to say that everyone reading this knows someone who has been affected in one way or another. My hope is that all women will make a conscientious effort to do a self-exam every month – it only takes a minute. We are all so busy taking care of everyone else that we often forget about ourselves and the importance of staying healthy.
Thank youfor all of your work with our children!Dr. and Mrs. alvin Prause

21,290 new cases of ovarian cancer are expected in the US in 2015.
Breast CanCerThe most common symptom of breast
cancer is a lump or mass in the breast, which is often painless. Less common symptoms include persistent changes to the breast, such as thickening, swelling, distortion, tenderness, skin irritation, red-ness, scaliness, or nipple abnormalities, such as ulceration, retraction, or spontane-ous discharge. Breast pain is more likely to be caused by benign conditions and is not a common symptom of breast cancer.
An estimated 231,840 new cases of in-vasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the US during 2015; about 2,350 new cases are expect-ed in men. Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most frequently diag-nosed cancer in women.
self-CareWomen are notorious for spending more
time taking care of others and less time on their own needs. The trend toward taking more time for yourself is not a new idea, it is often just hard to do. When it comes to maintaining health there are a few simple practices that are a great start to maintain-ing health.
• Be physically active most days of the week• Eat a balanced diet rich in lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables• Use relaxation techniques to cope with stress• Get enough rest/sleep most to all nights• Avoid tobacco products• Limit alcohol to one drink per day or less• Maintain a healthy weight• Schedule routine preventative care and health screenings
The choices you make today affect your
quality of life in the future!
By Amber NorrisIt is no secret that October is Breast Can-
cer Awareness Month, Pink is everywhere you look! It is a great reminder to women that we need to be proactive in maintain-ing a healthy body. There are so many as-pects to women’s health that keeping up to date on the variety of signs and symp-toms of good health should be an ongo-ing part of your routine. When was the last time you stopped to look at how well you are taking care of your personal health and wellbeing? If you are like many women it may have been quite a while. Here are few reminders on some of the important facts and symptoms associated with some of the major health risks that women face.
Heart HealtH
While we often think of women’s health issues relating mainly to breast health and menopause it may be surprising to note that heart disease is actually the number one killer of women in America, one in four women die from heart disease. While it is a natural course of a woman’s life cycle, menopause can cause physical changes that can impact your heart health. In fact, studies have shown an increase in heart attacks among women after experiencing menopause. If you’ve followed a healthy lifestyle and continue doing so at meno-pause, your risk for heart disease and stroke is lower.
Ovarian CanCerEarly ovarian cancer usually has no obvi-
ous symptoms, though studies have indicat-ed that some women experience persistent, nonspecific symptoms, such as bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, or urinary urgency or frequency. Women who experience such symptoms daily for more than a few weeks should seek prompt medical evaluation. The most common sign of ovarian cancer is swelling of the abdomen, which is caused by the accumulation of fluid.
There are no good routine screening tests for early or late detection of ovarian cancer. It is usually found at an advanced stage due to the fact that there are few major symptoms that draw attention to the fact that something is wrong; most symp-toms can be vague and mild. An estimated

Development Plans that Really WorkNovember 10, 2015 | 1:00-4:30pmAn organization's development plan should serve as a roadmap to reach immediate fundraising goals while laying the groundwork for future op-
portunities. Unfortunately, many orga-nizations take an ad hoc approach to
fundraising, forgoing a development plan as more urgent needs arise. Without
this strategy and focus, fund-raising suffers.

Probably your typical answer... my parents. Seeing things they went through and get-ting guidance from them made me the per-son I am today. The best life lesson you have learned: Someone is always going to have some-thing negative to say. All you can do is
keep your chin up and be true to yourself.Favorite guilty pleasure: Dessert... any form of dessert.People would be surprised to know that you...are terrified of wasps (like run from the area in a panic scared!) Favorite thing about Texas: Tex-Mex!The three accomplishments you are most proud of: Getting an education, my daughter, marry-ing my husbandWhat are you passionate about? Learning, my family, my careerWhat inspired you to join the League? I'm a bit of an introvert... I wanted to get out of my comfort zone, meet new people, and give back to the community.

I joined the Junior League exactly one year ago in Houston, TX. My first place-ment with the League was as a pro-visional volunteer at Texas Children's Hospital with Radio Lollipop. It was a ton of fun and I got to deliver crafts to the children while dressed up like an elf to spread some much needed cheer. I just moved to Beaumont, and I am excited to continue to be a part of the league and get to meet all of my new neighbors in town! My placement this year is on the Spinnings Committee so you will be hear-ing from me throughout the year.
A regular day for me starts with wak-ing up, letting the dog out and grabbing some cereal before heading to work. I work in Development for the Gift of Life Program. I talk to donors and commu-nity members and help to organize our large fundraising events. The people of Beaumont have made my job easy so far, because everyone is so willing to lend a hand and promote our cause.
In my personal life I love to hang out with my boyfriend and my rescue pup. I am also unpacking boxes and decorating our first house at the moment. Besides that, I have a HUGE passion for crochet! I have my own crochet business on Etsy and Facebook called "Purple Hippo Cro-chet" and I sell made to order stuffed animals and patterns. I love the creative process and I am always trying out new projects. I love to teach people how to crochet so if there are any League mem-bers that want to learn, come find me!
