I joined Beauchamps Grant Maintained School , as it was then known, in 1995 when there were only around 400 students on role. How things have changed since then! Ford Higher Apprenticeship Challenge Ford Dunton

This year our Year 10 students entered the annual Ford Higher Apprenticeship Challenge at Ford Dunton. We had two teams of ten students who entered the competition. They were tasked with designing, building, testing and improving a model car which had its own mechanical braking system. Teams were also expected to produce a digital experience which would show the design process, materials used and costings. This was a competition which

Beauchamps had won the two previous years, so the pressure was on. After a dramatic four week turn around, our teams were ready to compete in the competition against other schools from the local area. Points were awarded for the engineering side and IT side of the competition. Students were also given the opportunity to take a tour of the site and see many different areas within the Ford organisation. This has inspired some of our students to look at apprenticeships in the future.

After a hard fought contest, both of our teams came up just short of winning the competition but only by a very small margin. The eventual winners were Bromfords. Great credit must go to our students for working so hard in this four week period. Also thank you to Mr De Wet for all of his help; this project would not have been completed on time without his great guidance and support.Report by Mr Barnett

Chelmsford Engineering Society Big Bang Fair Competition

On the 28 of June Mr De Wet took five of his GCSE Product Design students; Keavy H, Ross T, Kayley H, Harry G and Harry H, to the Chelmsford Engineering Society and Big Bang Fair Competition. The competition is aimed at attracting more young people into the Engineering sector and to celebrate the work that they have done during the course of their studies. Students have to answer questions about their projects and also present

their work to a panel of judges from the Engineering Society. There were one hundred and eighty students from across Essex, Suffolk and Hertfordshire competing this year. Our students managed to win three awards and have been invited to a celebration evening that will be held at Anglia Ruskin University on the 19 of July where they will find out what awards they they have won. Our students were amazing ambassadors for the school and were commended for their excellent work. It was fantastic to see that the work we do in Design Technology measures up to, and in some cases exceeds, many other schools in Essex.Congratulations to Keavy, whose project was voted for by all the entrants as the second best project in the competition. A great achievement. We look forward to bringing you more news following the award ceremony next week.Report by Mr De Wet

‘A Whole New World’ At Aladdin Prince Edward Theatre

On Thursday 29 June, twenty-one Year 12 students embarked on their qualifying expedition to gain their Silver Duke of Edinburgh award. Over the course of 3 days they travelled around 45km from the west side of the New Forest to the East, camping in between. The first night gave everyone a chance to rest up for a full days walking on Friday. They were lucky with the weather; only a little drizzly rain to start before brightening up. All managed to set off on time and in

the right direction! No one admitted to getting lost and they all made it to the next camp successfully. The second night started off well; the campsite appeared to be

lovely although rather on the large size, an atmosphere which mirrored that described in the Harry Potter books during the Quidditch World Cup Festival. Lots of families had driven down for a weekend away for various reasons, lots of birthdays with bunting and balloons – it was lovely! Unfortunately, some visitors from the continent got a little carried away and started a bit of a sing-song at 10.30pm when we were all quiet and ready to sleep! Not as much rest

was gained at this camp site! In the morning though, even with sleepy heads, all managed to set off with smiles as well as backpacks ready for the next journey. This second day was a little brighter and most managed to discover groups of New Forest ponies and horses along their routes. The third night was a lot more peaceful, thankfully! (Apart from a small-ish invasion by free roaming cows!) However, once they realised we weren’t going anywhere, they decided to find an alternative field to rest in for the night. The final day saw more sunshine and heat which made things a little more difficult for groups making their way to Beaulieu Motor Museum at the final pick up point to go home. Fortunately, all managed to successfully ‘pass’ the expedition section by the end of the day. Well done all!!! Report by Miss Evans

Brought to theatrical life by the legendary Disney creative team, the brand new Broadway musical ALADDIN at the Prince Edward Theatre swept Beauchamps High School into a world full of beauty, fun and breath-taking spectacles. Twenty students from Years 7 to 10 enjoyed the classic hit film on Broadway, brought to life on stage by the producer of The Lion King.

James in Year 9 said “I think that the play was amazing and everyone performed very well, especially the genie.”Frankie in Year 9 said, “I really enjoyed the trip; the performance was amazing, especially the magic carpet.” Cameron in Year 9 said, “Outstanding is an under-statement, the play was amazing and the characters were perfect.” Belo in Year 7 said “The trip was very good and I really enjoyed the play. I would like to thank the school for taking me as this was my first live performance.” The students were exceptionally

well behaved and Mr Farrugia & Mrs Pepper were extremely impressed with their enthusiasm and energy throughout the evening. Mr Farrugia, had received funding for the trip from the Jack Petchey Foundation following his nomination for a teaching award. A huge well done to all the students on the trip for their hard work this year. Report by Mr Farrugia

To promote literacy outside of school, the Year 7’s and 8’s were asked to write a 200 word story over the Summer half-term holiday. There were a lot of fantastic entries and it is clear that we have some talented writers at Beauchamps High School. The winners of the Summer Literacy Competition are: Zach H, Joshua M and Kensy C. A big congratulations to our winning writers! Report by Miss J Cooper

On 27 May students from Years 7, 8 and 9 attended a three day residential visit to Hatfield Woods to learn bush craft skills whilst building on team work abilities. The three days were led by The Bushcraft Company who

delivered a fantastic array of activities and food! Over the three days, students learned an array of bush craft skills which were delivered in workshops. Lots of

fun and games were carried out each day, i n c l u d i n g a student f a v o u r i t e , Predator! In this game students hid in the overgrowth trying to make it back to base without being spotted – endless fun was had playing this game! Students were also taught how to create

fire safely, along with other camp craft skills such as shelter building. The Bushcraft Company had built a variety of shelters which the students were able to see and then use these ideas and skills to build their own shelters. Unfortunately, due to poor weather, they were not allowed to stay in their shelters overnight. The experience also saw the students learn how to skin a rabbit and butcher it in a way that it could be eaten. Some very brave students then worked in groups to put their skills into practice and successfully skinned and butchered a number of rabbits! They were also treated to a demonstration of panassing a salmon!During the three days The Bushcraft Company also provided a first aid workshop where students learned a variety of life saving skills which they put into practice one afternoon very successfully in an exciting realistic role play activity! Well done to the five students who

represented our school at the Essex Schools Athletics Championships last month. Ben O came 6th in Essex running the 100m. Having won the Essex competition, we went on to represent the County against four other County representatives. Beauchamps were the only school represented as the other Counties fielded Futsal club sides, who compete on a weekly basis. Nevertheless, had lady luck been on our side, this could have had a

The boys have been on an incredible journey throughout this competition and although we all felt a bit deflated initially, the effort, commitment and attitude shown by the boys is commendable. After weeks of intense hard work, six of our Year 8 students, William H, Charlie H, Thomas H and Nathan W, Reece D and Ishkaar D made their way to Birmingham NEC on Tuesday 4 July to pitch against 180 schools across the UK at the National Enterprise Finals. On arrival, the boys were extremely excited to receive lots of stationery from Ryman stationery company, the founders

of the event. After more than six hours of rehearsing their pitch, it was time to enter the judging room. Nervous and excited, the boys delivered a strong pitch for their attraction ‘Project Galactica’ to launch in Thorpe Park as a prequel to the Galactica ride at Alton Towers. The boys had created outstanding resources with visual graphics far beyond what was expected of them. Unfortunately competition was fierce and they were unable to proceed to the final round of presenting to Theo Paphitis himself, however, they did win a large box of sweets through guessing how many there were and being the closest with a guess of just four from the correct amount. The boys continued to show off their entrepreneurial skills on the way home, even gaining a free coffee from Starbucks. All in all the trip was extremely successful, the boys

thoroughly enjoyed the experience and said they would thoroughly recommend it to other students. Report by Miss Bell

Every term, the Business Department gives out an award for exceptional skills, ability and dedication to the study of Business, Economics and Retail. The winner of this term’s Business Enterprise Award has worked hard all year; they have been praised

but often didn’t realise that their efforts were continuously acknowledged. She has focused and completed every task set to the best of her ability and to the highest of standards. This award is for a student taking the retail course, a course that she did not opt to do but has taken every opportunity to be successful in, being productive with her time. Congratulations Kayleigh W in Y10 Retail.

The recipient of The Sixth Form Business Department commendation is without doubt one of the hardest working students in the school. She always goes that extra mile to make sure her work is never good but always outstanding, giving her teacher a hard job to find any room for improvements.Although this student has always been hard working, the reason for their nomination on this occasion was also due to the development of her leadership skills. The Business teachers have noticed how other students increasingly look to this person for guidance, advice, motivation and as a standard by which to measure their work. Congratulations Lucy W in Y12 BTEC Business.

This half term we are featuring Sam C in Year 12, who is studying A-level Economics. Sam chose to stay on at Beachamps because he knew the teachers and their style of teaching suited him. He had done well in his GCSEs and wanted to continue that success rather than leave and start again from scratch.I understand that you have a part-time job; could you tell us a little bit about it and if your studies have helped at work?I’ve been working down the road at The Chichester for the last seven months, which I really enjoy. It’s a busy challenging environment and things don’t always go to plan. I do definitely notice things that I have learned about in class, for example the different styles of management.Do you think this is a career path you might follow in the future?I don’t know what I want to do post Sixth Form yet. I prefer hands on work to being behind a desk. I may get a job or an Apprenticeship rather than go to University but I don’t know in which field I want to work at the moment.Anything else you would like to tell other students thinking of studying at Beachamps Sixth form? The free study periods are great, it makes it easier to get stuff done without having to go home and do it all. It means you can make better use of time. I’m not saying Sixth form is perfect, but I am glad I stayed on and still think it’s the best option for me to get the grades I need for the future.

BritishLibraryTrip:RussianRevolution

This year History students in Year 12 have been studying a unit on Russia between 1894 and 1941. As part of these studies we had the opportunity to visit a new temporary exhibition at the British Library in London, entitled Russian Revolution: Hope, Tragedy, Myths. Students saw primary source material from this period in Russia – from documents showing the coronation of Nicholas II to letters and documents belonging to Vladimir Lenin. In one activity students were given personas of characters and people from that period and asked to evaluate source material and its

relevance to their character. This was particularly interesting for those who had more controversial characters such as Rasputin the Siberian monk! Students made full use of the knowledge they have gained in their studies this year and it was a good opportunity to recap some of what they have learnt. They were also guided by the workshop leader in further developing their methods of interpreting source material. Overall an enjoyable trip was had by all, although the train journey home was a little warm in our June heatwave!Report by Mrs Butler

Year12RoadsterEvent:MakingRoadsSafer

This month Year 12 students, had a visit from the Safer Essex Road Safety Partnership. As driving is becoming important to these students its necessary to provide them with appropriate information so they become responsible, legal and safe drivers/passengers as they start taking lessons or travelling with friends as newly qualified drivers. Students were engaged with five

40 minute scenarios during a full day of activities which included information on the fatal four reasons for road traffic collisions:

drink or drug driving, using mobile phones whilst driving and distraction, speeding and no seatbelts.A practical presentation on Basic Maintenance was also delivered.Beauchamps High School’s Sixth Form students had excellent feedback from the Road Safety officers. Students were engaging, mature and courteous. We are extremely proud of the Year 12 students and how they conducted themselves.Students said that these sessions were valuable. One said it had got them thinking about how they sit in a

car, one of the fireman had explained the dangers of putting their feet on the dashboard whilst the car was moving. Another said that they will no longer buy cheap second hand tyres after finding out the risks of damaged areas and that they would now regularly check their tread. We hope that these workshops have taught the students how to be safe on the road. The road safety officers and their team were excellent and we look forward to having them back next year.Report by Miss Moore

The Learning From Auschwitz ProjectVisitToAuschwitz

As part of the ‘Learning From Auschwitz Project’ three of our Year 12 students Aimee W, Lily M and

Nicholas T visited Auschwitz in May with Miss Brabant. This is Aimee’s account of the trip:Visiting Auschwitz was an experience that sparked a big mix of emotions but, as I was leaving, I felt triumphant. I looked around with my head high, knowing that thanks to the growth of changing attitudes, this place (Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau) no longer functions. People have the right to come and leave, and remember and honour, instead of being discriminatory towards the innocent people who were imprisoned here.

It was an experience that gave me a final feeling of a humbled nature because even though yes, there are evil and devastating things going on in the world right now that we feel helpless about, this place just simply highlights that hate doesn't solve issues but instead creates more of them. We should stop seeing innocent others as a religion, a skin colour, a gender, a sexuality, an age, etc. but instead just see people as the humans they are, that have emotions, have dreams, have ambitions and that bleed the same blood as our own.

Harry left Beauchamps High School in 2014, after completing his GCSE’s, and went on to pursue a career in football.Harry is an attacking midfielder and has been part of the Blues set up since the age of nine, and when asked about his achievement he said “It’s been a long journey from the age of nine to here so I’m just glad that I’ve got it all done, There’s been a lot of coaches I’ve worked with in my time here but I’m really thankful to the likes of Dave Huzzey (also an ex-student of Beauchamps High School), Kev Maher and Ricky Duncan who have helped me over the last couple of years. It’s great to have signed a pro deal but the next target is to make my debut this season. I’ve got to work hard to get that opportunity and hopefully I can take it when it comes.”We are very proud of your achievements so far Harry and wish you great success in the future and with your chosen footballing career.

Dates For Your Diary

On Wednesday 5 of July, Mrs Birkumshaw and I took a group of Year 9 and 10 Textiles students to the Victoria and Albert Museum. After a long hot coach journey, students enjoyed looking at the fashion displays and created a series of detailed sketches of costumes through history. After visiting the shop to buy postcards they enjoyed lunch outside in the famous Victoria & Albert courtyard.Report by Mrs Frith

Earlier this month the Year 10 GCSE students went to see 'The Play That Goes Wrong' at the Duchess Theatre in London's West End. Before the play starts the audience see the backstage staff doing last-minute adjustments to the set, including trying to mend a broken mantlepiece and to find a dog that has run off.The fictitious Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, is putting on a performance of The Murder at Haversham Manor – a 1920s murder mystery play, similar to The Mousetrap, which has the right number of parts for the members. During the production a plethora of disasters befall the cast: doors sticking; props on the walls falling down; floors collapsing, missing cues and breaking character. The show had the whole class hooting with laughter from beginning to end. Caitlin R said "It was the best show I have ever seen".A truly laugh out loud comedy - and a very successful night.Report by Mrs Simpson
