students parade through the hallways. The parties will be held

right after the parade, followed by an all-school recess from3:05-3:35.

Here are some guidelines we wouldlike you to consider when choosing aschool-appropriate costume. We

    COUNSELORS CORNER

    ~Sandy Husted~

Bullying is more than just pushing, hitting, or fighting.Rumors and gossip are examples of social bullying.A rumor is a story or opinion about someone spread

from person to person. The person spreading a rumoroften does so without knowing all the facts.

Why do people spread rumors? They want attentionIt provides excitement and drama. They may be afraidto talk directly about the problem, so they complain toothers. Some people like to act like they know moreabout people or things than others do.

Why is spreading rumors considered bullying? Itsone-sided and unfair. People are ganging up on theperson targeted by the rumor. It feels bad. It hurts

    people.

It is very easy for people to participate in bullyingunintentionally by listening to and spreading rumors.Thats why its important for everyone to learn how tocontrol rumors and gossip. People who hear a rumorhave a responsibility to stop this kind of bullying.

A rumor block is a statement an individual makes to aperson who tells a rumor. Students will learn to use arumor block when they hear a rumor about someoneelse.

Sample rumor blocks that will be suggested are:

That sounds like a rumor to me. You dont have proof of that. You dont know if thats true. That sounds like something you should talk

    about with the person involved.

Parents/guardians can help by increasing their childsawareness of examples of put-downs, rumors, and gossthat are on TV. Parents can also help by being good ro

models and using rumor blocks to stop rumors andgossip during adult interactions.

What you don't see with your eyes, don't witness with

    your mouth. ~Jewish Proverb
