INTRODUCTION

1. Take out a sheet of paper.

2. Brainstorm and come up with FIVE goals for your 8th grade year.

3. Brainstorm TWO goals for social studies class. 

4. Share that information with a new friend in your group when you hear the signal or teacher direction.

TEACHER LETTER OF GOALS Dear students,

Welcome to the second day of Social Studies and middle school. I know that the first few days of a new class and school can feel overwhelming, and I understand that you may be feeling a slew of emotions today including excitement, nervousness, and uncertainty. Please understand that I have felt the same way many times when starting a new class, and it is natural. However, please also realize that while you may feel this way, I believe you came to RRMS to achieve great things, and one of my most important personal missions is to assist you in reaching your goals of doing well in school and in this class. I’m here for you! Please assist me in this task by assisting yourself.

STUDENT LETTER OF GOALS You hold the key to your success, so I would like you to use your

brainstorm list we completed in class and then, with that information, write a letter that outlines a plan for your future success in this class and in future rise towards higher education.

In doing so, please reflect upon the following topics and then NEATLY handwrite a full one page letter to yourself which explains in detail these issues:

What are my goals while in social studies class? Why am I in school? What do I hope to accomplish this year? How will I accomplish these goals? What do I hope to accomplish in this class and why? How would I feel if I dropped this class or out of school

altogether?

Students proofread and sign it at the bottom of the letter. We will re-visit these letters at the end of the school year to see how you have progressed towards your goals. Letters may also be re-visited sooner is a student gets off of track academically or behaviorally.

INTRODUCTION

1. Use the strip of paper passed out sequence how you motivate yourself to do your work? Order these techniques from 1 (the best) to 7 (the worst).

1. In your warm up books, brainstorm what it takes to change the world.

2. Brainstorm and come up with FIVE ways you would change the world

3. Share that information with a new friend in your group when you hear the signal or teacher direction.

can recognize.

3. The person who names the most people wins!

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION 1. What do you think this quote means: “With great
