MUST SEE / MUST DO DONEGAL & DERRY

Malin Head - Ireland’s most northerly pointCatch a cloudless evening and you may be enchanted by a night sky display of the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights. The celestial light show, with its ghostly wispy rays of dancing colours has been seen hanging like a fluorescent curtain over Malin Head – what better reason to go than to witness this astonishing sight.

Grianán of Aileach - Awaken your mystical spiritPerched 800 ft. above sea level on a spectacular hilltop, the Grianán of Aileach fort is a former home of the Irish High Kings. The origins of this circular site are believed to date from around 1700 BC. Although it has important connections with the ancient monasteries of Donegal, its history stretches far beyond the era of Christianity and is steeped in legend.

Doagh Famine Village - A museum like no other Doagh Famine Village tells the story of Irish life from the Great Famine of the 1840s through until the present day. The tour guides will take you on a journey showing how families and communities have lived on the edge generation after generation, adapting and surviving as the environment and society around the local area changed over the years. www.doaghfaminevillage.com

Fanad Lighthouse - Out on the Edge Located on the north coast of Donegal between Lough Swilly and Mulroy Bay. Its claims to fame include one of the world’s most beautiful lighthouses. To reach the headland, travel along Knockalla Coast Road, a route with some stunning panoramas. Visitors can also access the Fanad Peninsula via a car ferry from Buncrana to Rathmullan swillyferry.com. www.fanadlighthouse.com

Fort Dunree Military Museum Fort Dunree, Dun Fhraoigh in Irish means, “Fort of the Heather” and indicates that this site has been an important defensive site down through history. Today however, its stunning natural beauty and abundant wildlife are drawing increasing numbers of visitors to one of Inishowen’s most beautiful and peaceful locations. www.dunree.pro.ie

Walled City – A monumental backdropWalk the 17th Century City Walls, a unique promenade to discover the compelling history of Ireland’s only completely Walled City and one of the finest examples of Walled Cities in Europe today. The Walls are the monumental backdrop to a compact, walkable city equally famed for its vibrant cultural scene. Guided tours are available daily and highly recommended.

Guildhall – Our wow factor buildingOne of Derry’s key landmarks at the heart of the city since 1890, the restored Guildhall is home to one of Ireland’s largest collections of stained glass windows which illustrate the city’s history. Open every day with free admission, Experience ‘The Plantation of Ulster Exhibition’ and relax over a cuppa in the Guildhall café and soak up the atmosphere of the water fountains.

Peace Bridge – New icon across FoyleTake a ‘wee dander’ across the Peace Bridge and enjoy stunning parks and greenways. The iconic footbridge symbolises bridging the gap between communities on both sides of the River Foyle and stretches majestically across from the Guildhall to Ebrington Square, a former barracks which now houses visitor attractions including the Walled City Brewery.

Museums – Unique history on displayImmerse yourself in the city’s past at the Tower Museum with the Story of Derry and An Armada Shipwreck exhibitions. The Museum of Free Derry winner of ‘Authentic NI Experience of the Year tells the story of Civil Rights and Bloody Sunday while the Siege Museum tells the history of the Siege of Londonderry and of the Apprentice Boys of Derry.

Golf – why of course!Your gateway to golfing excellence in the North West, we are the city with the shortest drive to the ‘Opens’, Irish Open Ballyliffin 2018 and The 148th Open Royal Portrush 2019! Sample our very own parkland courses – Faughan Golf Centre’s 18th hole ‘Earhart’ championship course coupled with superb views over Foyle Valley and City of Derry Golf Club.
