PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (PYP) BCIS is authorized by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization to offer the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) for our Nursery through Grade 5 classes. We also offer an innovative Toddler Program for students aged 2-3, which is based on the IB PYP Curriculum. Toddlers of the right age and showing readiness to separate from their parents and participate in group activities are welcome to apply. The language of instruction is English. The IB PYP focuses on the whole child using an inquiry based approach to teaching and learning. The program provides a framework that guides a child’s transdisciplinary exploration in academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural realms. The subject areas of math, science, technology, social studies, language arts, Chinese language and culture, physical education and the visual and performing arts are integrated into units of study that enable students to make connections between content areas, to understand concepts more deeply and to apply what they are learning to real life situations. In addition, a respect for the environment, care for others and an appreciation of culture is embedded into the curriculum.

Written student progress reports are issued three times per year. The first is an October Progress/Goal setting report, accompanied by a parent/teacher/student conference. The second and third reports are full written reports, issued at the end of Semester 1 (December) and at the end of Semester 2 (June), respectively.

In addition, Student-Led Conferences are held each spring. This unique conference is an opportunity for students to share and reflect on their school progress with family members and enables students to take an active role in their assessment process.

MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME (MYP)

Primary Student Progress Reporting

In Grades 6-10, BCIS students study the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). The MYP is designed to help students develop the attitudes, knowledge, skills and understanding to help them become active and engaged participants in a rapidly and sometimes unpredictably changing world. Our students learn through inquiry. The Global Contexts (Identities and Relationships; Orientation in Space and Time; Personal and Cultural Expression; Scientific and Technical Innovation; Globalization and Sustainability; Fairness and Development) allow learners to connect what is studied in the classroom with the outside world. The philosophy underpinning the programme is geared towards the promotion of student-initiated action. It encourages students to be principled and to show compassion to others through both leadership and teamwork. Our curriculum is built upon the fundamental concepts of communication, intercultural awareness and holistic learning. We offer a balanced academic programme that is skills-driven and acknowledges the voice of the learner. Our educators build their teaching around the international standards embodied in the MYP and adapt their teaching to meet the needs of the individual learners in their charge.

Students study Language and Literature (English; Chinese; Korean); Mathematics; Design & Technology; Sciences; Language Acquisition (English; Chinese; Spanish); Individuals & Society (Humanities); Arts (visual & performing: music/drama); Physical & Health Education. The school’s language of instruction is English (except in Chinese, Korean & Spanish classes). The MYP respects the subject disciplines and their knowledge domains, skills, enduring understandings-concepts, values and attitudes; however, the programme also promotes inter-disciplinary learning when appropriate. This means that we encourage students to make conceptual connections across disciplines and to become both creative and critical thinkers.

Students at BCIS are encouraged to take greater control over their own learning through the support of the teachers. We promote intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy to empower our students to do the very best that they are capable of. At the end of the MYP each student completes a sustained piece of research called the Personal Project. Students are challenged to show their independence and to lead their own inquiry into a topic of their choice. The Personal Project is also celebrated as a community event with a public exhibition.

At BCIS Service Learning inherently involves students taking action. The aims of service learning are many but include: personal development; enhanced respect for and understanding of others; elevated community participation (school, local, national, global); maturing of an individual’s understanding of themselves, their community and society; leadership and teamwork opportunities. BCIS provides our students with a host of opportunities to engage in service both arising from their curricular studies and through EA activities with a service focus. Whether through volunteering with established NGOs or setting up their own clubs, at all times, students are encouraged to develop their understanding of the needs and perspectives of others and to examine both intended and unintended consequences of service action.

MYP and DP Assessment and Student Progress Reporting

Students are continuously assessed with specified criteria that correspond to the objectives of each subject area. The students’ results are determined by their performance that is measured against a set standard which is expressed as a written descriptor and not normatively by each student’s relative position to others in the grade or a pre-determined pass mark. Assessment tasks may include open-ended, problem solving activities and investigations, organized debates, hands-on-experimentation, analysis, or reflection.

Student progress is reported to parents regularly. Each semester we have:

1. An end of semester full written report, complete with reference to major assessment tasks, achievement levels and grades as well as a detailed teacher comments.2. A parent-student-teacher conference

BCIS is fully authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme, a two-year internationally recognized course of study for Grade 11 and Grade 12. It is a comprehensive, rigorous, integrated approach to learning that meets the needs of highly motivated secondary students. The syllabus incorporates the best of several educational programmes from around the world and is a genuine challenge, even to the most academically inclined.

The curriculum contains the following six subject groups :

Group 1 – Language & Literature: English A: Language & Literature HL or SL, Mandarin A: Language & Literature HL or SL, Mandarin A: Literature HL or SL, Korean A: Literature HL or SL, Self-taught LanguageGroup 2 – Language Acquisition: English B HL or SL, Mandarin B HL or SL, Mandarin B ab initio SL , Spanish ab initio SL, Spanish B SLG3 - Individuals & Societies: Business Management HL or SL, Economics HL or SL, Geography HL or SL, History HL or SL, Psychology HL or SLG4 - Experimental Sciences: Biology HL or SL, Chemistry HL or SL , Design

Technology HL or SL , Physics HL or SL, Computer Science HL or SLG5 - Mathematics: Mathematical Studies SL, Mathematics HL or SLG6 - The Arts & Options: Music HL or SL, Theatre HL or SL, Visual Arts HL or SL

Students choose six subjects selected from the six subject groups, three at a higher level (240 teaching hours) and three at a standard level (150 teaching hours). In addition, students are responsible for the core components of study: an extended 4,000 word essay on a topic of individual interest involving independent research; a Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course in which students explore the nature of knowledge across all disciplines and cultural perspectives; and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), a component that encourages students to become involved in areas outside the academic realm such as the arts, sports and community service.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY AT BCISAs educators, our challenge is to prepare our students to be effective citizens in the 21st century. In addition to teaching the traditional school subjects, we must also develop in our students a range of functional and critical thinking skills related to information, media and technology.

The integration of technology as an educational tool is inherent in learning and teaching at BCIS. Our ongoing technology plan includes the purchase of state- of- the- art hardware and software for students, digital projectors for classrooms, interactive whiteboards, and professional development for teachers and support staff.

BCIS has a 1:1 Apple laptop personal ownership program in Secondary School. We chose to use Apple laptops rather than PC-based laptops due to the wide variety of Apple-based educational software and the high level of professional training and technical support available from Apple in Beijing.

All students in Grades 6-12 are required to purchase their own Apple laptop computer. As a result, teachers are able to more efficiently plan for the effective use of technology in their classes.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING (ELL)Our team of specially trained teachers provides ELL support to students whose primary language is not English. These specialist teachers work alongside our Homeroom and Advisory Teachers to integrate non-native speakers as quickly as possible. The instruction may take place in the classroom or as a pull-out program.

At BCIS, all non-native English speaking students are tested when they arrive at school. Once the English language proficiency level has been determined, the students are placed in the ELL program as needed. How long a student remains in the program is determined by how quickly the student acquires grade appropriate English language skills.

LEARNING SUPPORTBCIS provides learning support for those students who require additional assistance in mastering the curriculum. Acceptance into the school for children with special needs is made on a case by case basis. The determination is based on whether the school has sufficient expertise and resources to accommodate the student.

COUNSELINGBCIS employs a number of full-time counselors to assist students, parents and teachers with a wide variety of needs including personal, learning, and educational issues; international university and college placement; psycho-educational assessments; and academic, career and lifeskill counseling. The counselors at BCIS work closely with the staff in the Learning Support section to provide a comprehensive support and advice service to the BCIS community.

SPORTS, CLUBS AND ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIESWe believe that a broad and balanced range of co-curricular options is important to supplement students’ educational experiences. The Enrichment Activities program (EA) provides students with after school opportunities twice per week in a variety of activities including (but not limited to) scuba diving, calligraphy, Taekwondo, swimming, computers, board games, tennis, chess, dance, cooking, and photography, amongst others. A complete listing can be found on the BCIS website.

Our Interscholastic Sports Program has teams in basketball, swimming, volleyball, soccer, badminton, and handball. BCIS is a member of two athletic conferences, the International School Athletic Conference (ISAC) and the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS).

PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION ( PTA )The day your child joins our school you become a member of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at BCIS. The PTA is a non-profit organization consisting of parents, teachers and Board members of the school community.

The aim of the PTA is to promote and enhance the international character and values of the education offered at BCIS and to forge a unified, vibrant and caring community in support of student education. Through close cooperation among parents, staff, Board of Trustees and other school associates, the PTA assists BCIS and its community in developing and nurturing relationships.

Orientating to a new school, in some cases in a new country or city, and with a new language, can be an overwhelming experience. Participating in PTA activities is a great way to make new friends, share experiences and learn about the community.

FACILITIESThe BCIS main campus has three main buildings with over 50 classrooms, a sports complex, a 300-seat theater, a design and technology lab, green screen photography/filming studio, five science labs, two libraries, two cafeterias, a café, a heated six-lane swimming pool, a soccer field, and more.

Our ECC Campus is a purpose-built, high-rated eco-friendly facility complete with around 20 spacious classrooms, common dining areas, indoor and outdoor play areas, kid-sized learning kitchens, gymnasium, theater, a library, rooftop gardens and much more.

Both campuses have universal Wi-Fi coverage, and also contain air-filtering equipment able to remove at least 80% of harmful PM2.5 particles.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMThe BCIS Scholarship Program promotes excellence in the High School by awarding academic and merit scholarships to extraordinary students, irrespective of their families’ financial status. Scholarships are normally awarded to students in their final four years of school.

BCIS scholarship recipients are selected through a holistic review of each student's academic history, competitive examinations, interview, statement of intent and a portfolio/audition (if applying for talent-based scholarships). More information about scholarship application and review can be found on the BCIS website.
