• Icebreakers and Introductions • BCASC Convention Resolution on Ethical Behavior Contract was passed out and agreed to use for
Student Government or Class Office. • August 29 BCASC Meeting, invite School Board members and stress the importance of Destination

BCASC General Meeting
West Broward High School Auditorium August 29, 2012
I. President Felicia Botting called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.
a. Miramar High School performed the presentation of colors b. A student from Miramar High School performed the National Anthem
II. Guest Speakers a. Superintendent Robert Runcie shared with the students information concerning Broward
County Schools such as Ed Talk. Mr. Runcie invited all the students to attend the event to ensure that there is adequate student representation. Mr. Runcie encouraged all to sign up and register for the event on the Broward School’s website.
b. School Board Chairperson, Mrs. Ann Murray encouraged the students to attend college. Mrs. Ann Murray encouraged all eligible students to vote so that they could participate in the leadership of their cities, county, state and country.
c. Ms. Tonya Edwards was present on the behalf of the Broward County’s Supervisor of Elections Dr. Brenda D. Snipes. Ms Edwards informed the students present that High School voter registration in 2011 was the best in the last fifteen years. 11,700 students registered to vote in the 2011-‐2012 School Year. Ms. Edwards encouraged the students to educate themselves on the candidates and how to properly use the ballots. Ms Edwards extended gratitude to the school board for allowing some of the Broward Schools to be used as locations to vote. For all students who are not eligible to vote, they can vote online from Oct 27 through November 2 on Kids voting online. Mr. Roland intervened to inform that only 10% of registered voters voted in the last election. Mr. Roland challenged all students to ask their teachers and parents if they voted and ask why not if the response was no. The deadline is to register to vote October 9. The form can be downloaded from www.browardsoe.com. Ms. Edwards informed the students that the next Neighborhood Partnership Meeting is on Sept 26. They desperately want students and members of the board to come to the meeting to gain more information. Students are also can work the voting poles where all can receive community service hours and some can receive money.
d. School Board Member, Patricia Good encouraged the students to give Mr. Roland a round of applause for the time and hard work he gives students. Patricia Good encouraged students to stay active in student activities.
e. Ms. Botting also recognized Dr. Joanne Harrison, Chief Portfolio Services Officer and Mr. Damian Huttenhoff, the Director of Student Activities and Atheltics. She explained that Dr. Harrison was Mr. Huttenhoff’s and Mr. Roland’s boss.
III. Reading of the Minutes/Roll Call a. Secretary Eddie Oliver, Jr. informed the BCASC Student Body that there are no minutes
since this is the first meeting of the year. However, he will send all minutes to Mr. Roland after the meetings to send out to the High School Advisors through CAB Email.
b. IV. Treasurer’s Report a. Treasurer Victor Lee informed the BCASC body that there is $1,430.00 in the Scholarship

1. The officer school representatives were introduced by the President Botting. ii. Major League Leaders
1. A video clip from a baseball movie was shown to the BCASC Student Body. President Botting informed the BCASC Student Body that the theme for the year is ‘Major League Leaders’. The theme will be incorporated in the convention theme, scrap books, and meetings.

f. Parliamentarian i. Committee Forms
1. Parliamentarian Kristen Keiser informed there is a new form for all schools to fill out after completing projects. The Parliamentarian can be contacted for more information.
g. Advisers to the School Board i. Student Adviser to the School Board Maria Brown informed the BCASC Student Body of the opportunity to sign up for the ‘Speak Up Speak Out’ Sessions. She can be contacted for more information.
ii. Assistant Student Adviser to the School Board Blair Hirt informed the members of the available county committees they can become involved in. These committees are separate from the BCASC committees. If students are interested in joining or would like more information, they can contact the Assistant Student Adviser to the School Board Blair Hirt via email. Also, Mrs. Stappleton, the chair of the Code of Conduct committee is asking for three representatives who are not seniors to sign up for the first meeting which is September 4th at 9:00 am at New River Middle School.
h. School Liaison i. Mr. M. Roland informed the members that all dues are to be sent to McArthur High School. Mr. Roland encouraged the students to register for the SASC Convention. There are free buses but it costs $25 for each student. Mr. Roland Challenged at least
twenty schools to get National Council of Honor. Mr. Roland also informed the members about the Middle School Leadership Workshop.
VI. Committee Reports a. Chairperson Josie Rodriguez informed the BCASC Student Body to email her if they are
interested in becoming a part of the committee. She also informed the members to attend the meetings. She can be contacted via email to get more information concerning becoming involved in the Ethics Committee.
VII. Old Business a. Committee Chair Descriptions
i. Destination Diploma 1. President Botting presented Destination Diploma. A video presentation was
shown. President Botting informed the members that the goal of Destination Diploma is to create projects, events, and services that will help Senior Students to graduate. President Botting informed the members that the chairperson of this committee will have to collect all reports from all schools to present at the BCASC Meetings.
2. Mr. M. Roland informed the students to target the students who are not usually noticed. All schools will be given banners to be hung up at the schools.
ii. Holiday Cards for VA Hospitals 1. High School Vice-‐President Alexander informed the members of the Holiday
Cards for VA Hospital Project. The High School Chairperson will have to publicize, have a roster of the participating schools, keep record of the amount of cards received, send out reminders of deadlines, and encourage schools to partner up with their neighboring middle schools to make cards.
iii. Cure Finders 1. Secretary Oliver, Jr. informed the members that the purpose of Cure Finder is
to spread awareness and fundraise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The chairing school will be responsible for receiving reports from all BCASC Schools and reporting the updates to the HS Vice-‐President as well as in the BCASC General Meetings. The chairing school has to receive approval from the SGA Advisor.
iv. Joe DiMaggio’s Glove Challenge 1. Treasurer Ly informed the members that the Joe DiMaggio Glove Challenge
goal is to fundraise money for the Joe DiMaggio Hospital and their patients. Anyone who donates a dollar will be able to get a glove and write their name on it. The gloves will be given back to be hung up at the hospital. The top three schools will be recognized. The chairing school will be responsible for creating friendly competition, have schools give weekly reports, and announce at every meeting the top three schools.
v. Wacky Olympics 1. Parliamentarian Keiser informed the students that the chairing school will
have to provide a host school, organize a list of games, assign schools to games based on number of volunteers they are bringing, create a schedule, organize the materials, provide directions, provide student volunteers to
direct students throughout the day, register schools, and have a list of registered schools. The charity has been changed to Patriot Paws. A video was shown showcasing the charity.
vi. Environmental Projects 1. Student Adviser to the School Board Maria Brown informed the members of
possible projects. Adopt a hallway, eco-‐friendly websites, beach clean-‐up, waterway clean-‐up, Environmental Awareness Days, Recycle-‐a-‐thon, and Environmental Art Shows. The chairing high school will have to obtain reports from schools to present at meetings.
vii. Spring Food Drive 1. MS Vice-‐President Kaylin Baer Spring Food Drive will be designed to collect
cans to be donated. The chairing high school will have to school project forms, create either a school or county wide competition, ensure that schools turn in their weight of cans and not the number, and have high schools partner up with a middle school.
VIII. Announcements a. Mr. Roland informed the members that any new business has to be submitted to the
President ten days before the next BCASC Meeting. At the next meeting at, BCASC will start “At My School We…”. The student will give your name and school name as well as the project and contact information. Please plan to attend FASC at Royal Palm Beach HS. The BCASC Website has to be updated. The next BCASC meeting is September 20, 2012 at Monarch High School beginning at 8:30 am.

BCASC General Meeting Monarch High School Auditorium
September 20, 2012
I. President Felicia Botting called the meeting to order at 8:50 AM. a. Monarch High School's Army JROTC presented the colors. b. Airme Easain from Monarch High School sang the National Anthem. II. Guest Speakers a. Monarch's SGA President, Hannah Prock, and Principal, Mr. James Neer, extended warm greetings to the BCASC. b. Mrs. Laurie Rich Levinson, a School Board Member, spoke with the BCASC about the resolution she introduced concerning High States Testing. It was passed unanimously by the Broward County School Board and the Florida School Board Association. The goal is to encourage the state legislature to institute more innovative and creative teaching methods in the classrooms versus the attention given to standardized testing. The resolution asks for multiple forms of assessment to measure the success of students versus the current singular form that tends to cause emotional, mental, and physical stress. Mrs. Levinson emphasized the fact that having end of the year course exams in Core Classes is the right step. As a district, Broward County wants more creative ways to teach students. c. In Addition, the School Board passed a resolution on September 19, 2012 supporting LGBT
History Month. It is the Board’s intention to promote student safety regardless of their sexual orientation. It allows the discussion of LGBT issues and topics in a manner similar to those conducted during other “history weeks”. The School Board of Broward County, Florida was the first board in the State of Florida to pass this type of resolution. Mrs. Levinson also mentioned that the School Board is supporting Kids Voting and is providing a program called Kids Online Voting. The results from Kids Online Voting will be announced on BECON TV. d. Mrs. Levinson will provide Mr. Roland a copy of the resolutions and he will send them to all of the county’s middle and high schools. The FASC District 6 meeting will be held on Saturday, October 6 and the resolutions may be placed on the agenda. e. Tonya Edwards, form the Office of the Broward County Supervisor of Elections, gave the BCASC information regarding voting. All registered voters can either vote early or on November 2 at the listed locations as well as by mail. A flyer was given to each school represented providing information on voting. f. Poll workers are still needed to work the polls. To work as a volunteer or paid poll worker students need to contact the Office of the Supervisor of Elections. g. The November 2nd ballot will be four pages long. Ms. Edwards will send an email to the Assistant Student Advisor to the School Board, Blair Hirt, explaining the ballot. h. Ms. Edwards informed the BCASC that the age to work the polls is sixteen, the amount of pay ranges from $100 to $250, convicted felons can not vote, no pay is given during training, and to call the office if you have not received any information on working the polls but only if you have previously registered to vote. Ms. Edwards can be contacted at (954)-495-9911 in order to register to work the polls. To register by yourself, the Voters Registration Application can be downloaded from browardsoe.org and sent to one of the offices listed on the website. i. Master Sgt. Abuid Montes the United States Marine Corps and Freedoms Foundation spoke to the BCASC. Sgt. Montes is a firefighter and motivational speaker. He shared stories from his career as a marine being serving in Desert Storm. Master Sgt. Montes extended thanks to the BCASC for sending Holiday cards to the Veterans. Master Sgt. Montes will contact all of Broward County’s guidance counselors to nominate students to attend the Valley Forge Freedoms Foundation Program. Thirty-six will be chosen from the nominees. Master Sgt. Montes encouraged the students to be grateful for everything in life because there is a possibility it will not always be there. Also, Master Sgt. Montes gave information on his Virus Free Movement that promotes kind, compassionate, and caring words towards others. Master Sgt. Montes left his business cards to be given out to school representatives in order to join in this initiative. III. Reading of the Minutes a. A motion was made by West Broward HS to forego the reading of the minutes. Boyd H. Anderson HS seconded the motion. In discussion, Mr. Roland informed the members that by foregoing the reading of the minutes, the BCASC is agreeing to the content of the minutes. Once the minutes are accepted, there is no changing of the minutes. The motion carried unanimously. b. Roll was taken, Secretary Eddie Oliver, Jr. announced that West Broward HS, Northeast HS, Miramar HS, McFatter Technical Center, Hollywood Hills HS, Coral Glades HS, Majory Stoneman Douglas HS, McArthur HS, New River MS, Westglades MS, Coral Springs HS, Flanagan HS, Everglades HS, Coconut Creek HS, Fort Lauderdale HS, Western HS, Taravella HS, Boyd H. Anderson HS, Pompano Beach HS, Blanche Ely HS, Plantation HS, Stranahan HS, Monarch HS, Piper HS, Cooper City, West Broward HS, and Pembroke Pines Charter HS were
present IV. Treasurer’s Report a. The following schools were given receipts for dues: Cooper City HS, Monarch HS, McFatter HS, Northeast HS, Northeast HS, Piper HS, and Pompano HS, Ft. Lauderdale HS, and West Broward HS for paying there BCASC Dues. b. The BCASC has $2,470.00 in the Scholarship Fund and $4,268.08 in the operational fund. V. Officer Reports a. Student Advisor to the School Board Mariah Brown, Student Advisor, encouraged the BCASC members in attendance to join the school district committees in order for their voices to be heard. Also, she reminded the schools to sign up for their Speak Up, Speak Out Sessions. She can be seen after the meetings to schedule the sessions. b. Student Activities Liaison Mr. Roland reminded the students of the following due dates: Registration for the Ethics Conference has been extended until September 28, 2012, the District 6 Meeting is October 6, 2012, and the registration for SASC is due on Friday September 28, 2012 and Late Registration is due on Friday October 5, 2012. VI. Committee Reports a. Code of Conduct Committee Assistant Student Adviser to the School Board Blaire Hirt informed the students of the Code of Conduct Committee meeting. The Work Back program and the implementation of suspensions as well as how parents or students can appeal to any type of suspension were discussed at this meeting. She has issued a new updated list of the committees and all of their information. If any student would like to sign up for a committee or a question, they could see Ms. Hirt after the meeting adjourns. Anyone who commits has to present at two-thirds of the meetings. b. Middle School Workshop Blaire Hirt, representing the Middle School workshop Planning Committee, informed the members that the middle school leadership workshop committee has been established and the following schools will be running conducting the workshops: McArthur, Piper, Douglas, Flanagan, and Pompano. The workshops are banner making, public speaking, county leadership, and communications. c. Ethics Forum Chairman Josie Rodriguez informed BCASC of the schools that are participating in the Ethics Forum Planning Committee and the workshops each school is responsible for: (1)Ethics and Family is Flanagan HS, (2) Ethics and Relationships is Coral Spring HS, (3) Ethics and Sports is Coral Springs HS, (4) Ethics and Social Media Western HS, (5) Ethics and the Student Code of Conduct is Coral Glades HS, (6) Ethics and Government McArthur HS, (7) Ethics and Business South Plantation & Blanche Ely HS, (8)Ethics and Medicine Piper HS, (8)Situational Ethics Nova HS, and (9)Stone Douglas high school with Ethics and Race Relations. She reiterated the due dates for registration and the commitments from the participating schools. VII. Old Business a. Announcement of Committee Chairs i. Wacky Olympics Will be chaired by Marjory Stoneman Douglas. The representative form Douglas announced that they would present the theme for the event at the next BCASC Meeting. ii. Spring Food Drive There is no chairing school yet. iii. Destination Diploma

Joe DiMaggio’s Glove Challenge There is no chair for this project yet. VIII. New Business a. The Sexual Assault Treatment Center Holiday Party-David Riusech, Cooper City HS The Sexual Assault Treatment Center Holiday Party is on December the 19th. Participating students will receive community service hours. Children will have the opportunity to get their wish for Christmas fulfilled. The list will be given to individual schools to raise money to purchase the toys and gifts. Cooper City HS moved that the BCASC to endorse this project. West Broward seconded the motion. In discussion, Mr. Roland explained the process of endorsing projects. Endorsed projects will be placed on the BCASC agenda, updates will be given and members will be encouraged to participate. However, endorsed projects will be one of the county projects mandated by the BCASC. The motion passed with no opposing votes. IX. At my school We… a. Pompano Beach’s SGA President spoke about their Homecoming Tailgating Party. X. Announcements The next BCASC Meeting is on October 18 at 1:30 PM at Plantation HS. President Botting adjourned the meeting at 10:43 AM.

I. President Felicia Botting called the meeting to order at 1:47 PM a. Plantation High School’s Army JROTC presented the colors. b. Bryan Shall from Plantation High School sang the National Anthem.
II. Guest Speakers
a. Plantation High School’s SGA President, Monet King, and Adviser, Mr. Cain extended warm greetings to the BCASC.
b. Sely Mojica of the Broward League of Cities and City of Fort Lauderdale Commissioner and President of the Broward League of Cities Bobby Dubois presented information concerning their organization. The Broward League of Cities is a non-partisan organization comprised of elected government officials from thirty-one municipalities in Broward County. They help to identify and resolve issues, promote municipal authority, strive to increase public knowledge of matters concerning municipalities, and provide leadership. They travel to Washington D.C. to discuss issues concerning these municipalities as well as legislation that will affect members of the Broward League of Cities. They are comprised of a Board of Directors, representatives from each municipality, committees, and young individuals involved in the Student Ambassador Program.
c. The Broward League of Cities’ Student Ambassador Program is designed to support future
community leaders by providing introductions into the world of public service to high school students who plan to pursue a career in public administration, political science or other government-related fields.
d. Four high school juniors are selected each year to partake in the 2-year program. During their term, ambassadors attend Broward League of Cities general membership meetings, board of directors meetings and other functions pertaining to the operation of the League. Under the tutelage of the Broward League’s Education Committee, students have the opportunity to meet with elected officials and learn the intricacies of governing at the municipal level.
e. Student ambassadors’ submit monthly “My View” columns that detail their experiences in the program and views on current events.
f. Sely Mojica informed the BCASC of the Scholarship Program made possible by the League of
Cities, members, and other donors. There are in total six one-thousand dollar scholarships given to students who have taken interest in government and public relations related majors. They must be a senior in High School, be present for the interview, complete the requirements described in the application packet. The application and more information can be found on their website, browardleague.org. Only current seniors can apply for the scholarship and current juniors can apply to the Ambassador Program.
g. Commissioner Dubois informed the BCASC that all applicants have an equal opportunity to be selected.
h. Chuck Puleri from Herf Jones encouraged the BCASC to join in on the initiative of publicizing student success in Broward County. Mr. Puleri encouraged the students to use forms of social media, newspaper, magazines, and video tape to spread the news of successful students.

V. Officer Reports a. Student Adviser to the School Board
i. Maria Brown Student Adviser to the School Board Maria Brown informed BCASC of the possible changes made to the Student Code of Conduct. These possible changes include AP and Honor students appealing their suspensions on the basis of the possible time and knowledge lost by not being in class. This could possibly hinder their growth in academics. Another pending change is whether or not high school students should be allowed to carry over the counter medications in their bags to school. ‘Bullying Awareness’ videos have been made to be sent out to schools to be shown to students. Westglades MS was thanked for their Successful ‘Speak Up, Speak Out’ Session. Pines Charter’s Advisor and Cooper City’s President requested for a session but did not give a date. The BCASC was informed that the first webinar is scheduled attentively towards the end of November.
ii. Blair Hirt Assistant Student to the School Board Blair Hirt informed the members that two out of three people signed up for the code of conduct committees. However, one person from the north is needed to join. There is someone serving on the Central D.A.C and Gifted Advisory committees. If anyone would like to sign up for a committee, please contact Blair Hirt through email or C.A.B. Also, the School Board members have been emphasizing voting participation amongst eligible students during the School Board Meetings.
b. Parliamentarian Parliamentarian Kristen Keiser informed the members that each school will be given a copy of the report form to be completed for each project. Upon completion, the form will be given to the chairing school who will in turn submit them to the High School Vice-President. This form will be used to keep record of the schools that are completing the projects so the correct amount of point can be given at the end of the year. The advisor from Gulf Stream Middle School requested that the contact information of the Chairing Schools be placed on the back of the agendas so that schools can know who to contact and where to send their required documents. Parliamentarian Kiser informed her that the form is not as important to the Middle Schools since they are not required to complete the projects. Student Activities Liaison interjected to inform the members present that Middle Schools are expected to complete every project except Destination Diploma.
c. Student Activities Liaison Student Activities Liaison Mr. Roland informed the BCASC the importance of turning their report forms to the Chairing Schools. Also, he reiterated the importance of voting. Finally, Mr. Roland encouraged the schools to attend the SASC Convention next year due to the low number of Broward schools attending this year.
VI. Committee Reports a. SATC
Cooper City HS informed the BCASC that the event had been moved to later date that had been yet decided. Their facility was not properly reserved. The possible dates are Thursday, December 13th or Friday, December 21st.
b. All participating school as well as any school that were interested in joining the initiative were asked to stay after to decide the final date. Cooper City HS will distribute the lists of requested toys after they are received to the participating schools.
b. Wacky Olympics
Stoneman Douglas HS announced that they will be distributing ballots to the schools in attendance to vote on the theme for Wacky Olympics. After tallying the ballots, Stoneman Douglas announced that the theme for Wacky Olympics 2012 is Hunger Games.
c. Destination Diploma Western High School informed members present that forms have been given out at their school. One thirty students have returned them to the BRACE Adviser. No schools have contacted Western HS on the status of their projects. Western HS can be contacted at [email protected] for more information and a copy of the form.
d. Cure Finders Coral Glades HS wishes to initiate a county-wide fundraiser for Cure Finders. They are in the process of taking suggestions from member schools. They suggestions can be sent their Advisor at [email protected]. They requested that the schools inform them of project sponsored or money fundraised.
e. Environmental Project: The Chairing school was absent.
f. Holiday Cards for VA Hospitals: The Chairing school was absent.
VII. Old Business
a. Announcement of Committee Chair i. Spring Food Drive: Boyd Anderson HS

ii. Joe DiMaggio’s Glove Challenge: Miramar HS The school was not in attendance to give a report.
b. Ethics Conference Chairmen Josie Rodriguez extended gratitude to the schools that led workshops and attended. They are in the developing stages for the Conference next year.
VIII. New Business a. Voters Registration
Assistant Student Adviser to the School Board Blair Hirt proposed to the BCASC the Voters Awareness Project. Its purpose is to encourage eligible students to vote. Some examples and ideas are hanging banners and flyers about the Election Day so people are aware why there is no school and to urge their parents to vote if they can’t themselves. Also, schools can send fliers in all their teachers’ mailboxes to remind them to vote. Coral Springs HS motioned for BCASC to endorse the project. Cooper City HS seconded the motion. In discussion, several students voiced their support of this project. The motion carried with a unanimous vote.
b. SASC Conference Parliamentarian Keiser reminded the members present that Pompano was running for SASC President. She reminded them that the convention will take place at University High School in Orlando from October 26th to October 29th where 800 students are projected to attend. Parliamentarian Keiser also encouraged the Broward County Schools to attend especially if Pompano wins President because the convention will be held at their school. Then, it will be more convenient for Broward County Schools to attend.
IX. At my school we… Plantation’s SGA President Monet King shared the amount of success their school was experiencing with ticket sales and participation in the Spirit Week Events. Boyd Anderson’s SGA President Eddie Oliver, Jr. shared how the candidates running for Homecoming Court have to compete in a number of events during the week to accumulate points to win.
X. Announcement The next BCASC meeting will be Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Piper HS from 4 PM to 6 PM. The next District 6 Meeting will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Plantation High School from 9 AM to 11 AM. All schools you were present at this BCASC Meeting will have the opportunity to RSVP their own seating at the next BCASC Meeting. The Adviser must reserve by November 1, 2012 with Mr. Roland.

The BCASC members enjoyed a dynamic inspirational presentation from the ‘Original Mike Smith’. Throughout his creative motivational presentation and ice-breakers, he shared the following tips and points: (1). Be ready to do things others will not be willing to do, (2). Do things “…with the people and not for the people”, (3). Affection precedes attitude, (4). Always listen first, (5). Make sure people understand, and (6). Help students to stay in school by persuading and encouraging them to participate in student activities.

V. Officer Reports a. Student Adviser to the School Board
i. Mariah Brown Mariah Brown informed the members that Anti-Bullying was brought up at this week’s School Board Workshop. The School Board encourages students to participate in ‘Silence Hurts’, by creating posters and pocket cards that advocate anti-bullying. Also, they want the ‘Think B4 U Post’ program instituted at the Middle School level first to directly counteract cyber-bullying. Also, the School Calendar is in the process of being finalized. They will be three different proposed calendars to be decided on. Furthermore, she encouraged the members to sign up for a ‘Speak Up Speak Out’ session because she is interested in their opinions. They can be useful when she attends School Board meetings and workshops. Brown used the information from the ‘Speak Up Speak Out’ Session that was held at Westglades Middle School this past week, and the staff was appreciative of the feedback from students.
ii. Blaire Hirt Hirt informed the members of the current standing on the district meetings. There is space available in the North Area, South Area, ESOL, ESE, Attendance, and the North Area representative in the Code of Conduct committees. She will be having a training and informational meeting for all the students who signed up for a committee or are interested in being on a committee at Piper High on December 3rd at 3:30. At the school board meetings, the bullying policy and how the district handles bullying has been discussed. Bullying has been defined as repeated, imbalance of power, and purposeful. If any student is being bullied or has been a witness, please fill out a bullying complaint form or tell the appropriate Administrator. Hirt informed the members that the Gifted Advisory Committee is represented by Miramar, Code of Conduct Committee is represented by Blanche Ely and Piper, Central Area is represented by Plantation, and District Advisory is represented by Plantation and Coral Glades.
b. Student Activities Liaison Mr.Roland stressed the importance of students participating on county committees. Out the of sixty-seven counties in Broward, only four have county associations of Student Councils. One is inactive and one only meets with Student Government Presidents only. Palm Beach and Broward meet with all Student Government and Council Members in their respective counties. Broward is the only one that holds an election for two students to serve as Advisors to the School Board and allows students to participate on County Committees. Mr. Roland encouraged the members to find students at their school to serve on committees. Mr. Roland gave all of the students who voted in the national election a congratulatory t-shirt.
VI. Committee Reports a. SATC
Cooper City HS informed the BCASC that the official date of the event is December 13th. Miramar HS, Flanagan HS, and Monarch HS needed to see the representative after the meeting to be given their lists.
b. Wacky Olympics
Stoneman Douglas HS announced that at the last BCASC Meeting, the delegates present voted and the theme ‘Hunger Games’ received the most votes. The event will take place March 16, 2012, and the rules packet will be going out momentarily through CAB.
c. Destination Diploma Western High School informed members present that they will be sending out through CAB the Destination Diploma Student Application and the process of obtaining a banner.
d. Cure Finders Coral Glades HS informed the members of the ‘Star’ theme they are going with for Cystic Fibrosis this year. They requested the each school creates a project that coincides with this theme. Also, they asked that each school emails them of the amount of money that they donate.
e. Environmental Project Coral Springs Charter informed the members of the possible projects that they can do for this category. They also informed the schools to send them reports of what they are doing for this project.
f. Holiday Cards for VA Hospitals
The chairing school was absent.
VII. Old Business a. Voter’s Awareness
Blaire Hirt informed the members that the Voter’s Awareness efforts were successful since 99% of students participated in the Kids Online Voting in Broward as well held multiple projects to raise awareness for the voting processes and different elections. The official results were that Barrack Obama received 82% of the votes. Nearly all of the student results mirrored the results throughout Broward and the state of Florida. The new School Board members will be Mrs. Murry, Mrs. Rupert, Mrs. Leach, Mrs. Good, Mrs. Korn, Mrs. Rich-Levinson, Mrs. Bartleman, Mrs. Osgood, and Mrs. Freedman and Superintendent Robert Runcie.
b. SASC Parliamentarian Kristen Keiser informed BCASC that Pompano HS unfortunately was no elected SASC President. They arrived a day late due to Hurricane Sandy. She encouraged the member schools to attend next year. Mr. Roland informed the members that all schools that registered for SASC, but were not able to attend, will not have to pay for FASC registration.
VIII. New Business
a. Sandy Aid West Broward proposed for the BCASC to conduct a county-wide fundraiser as well as a collection of toiletries and canned goods to help with Sandy Aide Relief in New York. South Plantation motioned for BCASC to endorse this project. Monarch seconded the motion. In discussion, Mr. Roland informed the members that the money will be sent directly to the State of New York to be dispersed. The money that is collected has to go through the proper procedures with their school’s bookkeeper. A check can be sent to the BCASC for the Sandy Aide Relief. The motion was carried with a unanimous vote. West Broward will be the chairing school for this project and all reports have to be sent to their school. They can be contacted to arrange the pick-up time of the collections.
IX. At my school we…
Gulfstream MS funded their Harvest Drive by a ‘Out of School’ Day where they were able to fundraise $400.00. Cooper City HS fundraised $200.00 through a Trick or Treat Event. Plantation HS were able to conduct their Harvest Drive by requiring students to donate two canned goods in order to enter their Pep Rally. Flanagan HS conducted a fundraiser where they collected as much money as they could in one minute. Ramblewood MS had a landscaping project and a Kids to Kids Clothing Drive. Monarch HS had a $1,000 In A Minute Fundraiser for Leukemia. Coral Glades had Pie Day for Teachers as well as decorate their classes for the Thanksgiving Season.
X. Announcement The next D6 meeting will be held on December 8th at Plantation HS. The resolutions that are proposed, if passed in the meeting, will be taken to FASC. The next BCASC Meeting will be at Coral Glades HS on December 13, 2012 at 8 AM.

a. Coral Glades High School’s SGA President, Maria Caruso, extended warm greetings to the BCASC.
b. Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-Elizabeth Weiss
In the presentation, the students were informed that only fifty percent of patients with Cystic Fibrosis live to be thirty years old. Star Shay, a mother of a Cystic Fibrosis patient, shared her testimony of the journey she has experienced with her daughter. Elizabeth Weiss informed the students that the name of the project has been changed from Cure Finders to Great Strides. In order to make the project successful at their school and in their community, the students now have greater access to project ideas through the organization's Facebook page. The representative informed the students that for every dollar that is raced, ninety cents goes towards research and treatment while the other ten cents goes towards administrative and operational fees. Mr. Roland had to briefly interpret the presentation to establish the ground rules for the meeting since some of the delegates were being disrespectful while Ms. Weiss was presenting. In the Q & A, Mr. Roland informed the students that Cystic Fibrosis is not a widespread disease. There are only seventy thousand cases known in the world. Out of those cases, thirty thousand can be found in the United States. As a result of this, pharmaceutical companies are less likely to spend money to find a cure. Elizabeth Weiss shared her gratitude for BCASC continuing to fundraise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
c. Joe DiMaggio Representative
Taressa Garcia, a Joe DiMaggio Representative, was a guest at the meeting. Ms. Garcia thanked the BCASC for the participation in the 'Tour to Broward' Event. For two years, the members schools of BCASC have collectively fundraised over $20,000. Ms. Garcia informed the BCASC that on the last Sunday in February of this year, they will be hosting their Tour to Broward Event. She informed the members of the various pledging regiments. A participant can either ride a bike for thirty or sixty miles, run for five miles, or walk for three miles. It will take place at the Miramar Regional Park. There will be entertainment, games, and refreshments available. This year, the proceeds from the Glove Challenge will go towards the Cardiac Unit at the hospital. This year's slogan is “Every Kid Deserves a Healthy Heart”. Even though the gloves are usually sold at one dollar, some schools sell them for five dollars. Ms. Garcia thanked the students for their time and wished them luck with their future projects.

a. Student Adviser to the School Board
a.i. Mariah Brown
This past Saturday, Mariah Brown held a Speak Up Speak Out session at the District Six meeting. She extended her gratitude for all of the input given on the different topics. Brown informed us that the 2013-2014 school calendar has been approved and can be viewed on the Broward County School’s website at www.browardschools.com. This calendar, unlike this year or past years, will have school starting on August 19, 2013. First semester exams will take place the week before winter break so students will start second semester when they come back from break in January. The last day of school will be June 5, 2014. Brown discussed the possibility of Dillard High School being converted into a K-12 school. It would be slowly instituted over a couple of years starting with adding in the middle school and then eventually the elementary level. The K-12 school will be a technology magnet that will feed into the already existing program at Dillard. Student Adviser elections will be taking place at the March meeting at Rickards Middle School.
a.ii. Blaire Hirt
Blaire Hirt informed the members that the district committees are informing her that the student delegates are not attending the meetings. Hirt encouraged the members to attend the meetings if they have obligated themselves. Hirt will be hosting a training meeting on December 13th, 2012 at Piper HS beginning at 3:30 PM in Room 307. All student delegates the signed up for a district committee needs to be in attendance. Their attendance counts towards points for getting a Gold Medallion from BCASC.
b. Student Activities Liaison
Mr. Roland reiterate the training that was occurring Piper High School on December 13th. Mr. Roland informed the member that the Middle School Advisers will be having their meeting with him on January 23, 2013 at 4:30 PM at Sawgrass Springs MS. It will cost a $25 a student for being bussed to the FASC Convention. Broward Student Leaders Day will be on March 6th at Nova Southeastern University. McFatter and Nova HS will have to arrive by bus. It will cost $10 a student. No Seniors are allowed to attend. JC Applications are also due on January 17th. It must be signed by the Student Government Association Adviser. All students who wish to sit on
the planning committee for the Broward Student Leaders Day must attend the following meetings: February 6th, February 19th, and February 26th. The location has not been solidified.
Applications for Outstanding Leader and Adviser to the School Board must be submitted to Mr. Roland on February 15th by 3:00 PM.
The application for the National Council of Excellence is die on February 15th if a school is a member
of NASC.
Principal of the Year, Adviser of the Year, and Student Of the Year are due to Mr. Roland in his office on January 24th.
Mr. Roland encouraged the BCASC member schools to run for Office and Project of the Year
Awards.
Applications for SFLTC/Camp Eagle are due on May 1st for Broward County Schools.
VI. Committee Reports
a. SATC
Cooper City HS informed the BCASC that the event is being held on December 13th. The event has been successful for they have been able to collect enough gifts. They extended their gratitude to the BCASC members that participated.
b. Wacky Olympics
Stoneman Douglas HS announced that advisers should be receiving the rules packet sometime today or tomorrow hopefully. The games packet should be going out sometime next week. Wacky Olympics will be taking place on March 16, 2013 at Stoneman Douglas High School and the theme is Hunger Games. If you have any questions you can e-mail Douglas at [email protected]
c. Destination Diploma
Western High School informed members present that Destination Program is a countywide service project sponsored by the Broward County Association of Student Councils and Herff Jones. The goal of the project is to emphasize the importance of receiving a high school diploma.
Participating schools will post a banner listing the names of the seniors who are progressing to
receive a diploma. To have their name place on the banner a senior must have 40 hours of documented community service, passed the FCAT and have at least a 2.0 GPA.
In addition participating schools should be dong “PSAs” over their communications media (PA or Closed Circuit TV), featuring seniors who are on the way to receiving a diploma in 10 or 15 second “ads”. The purpose of these “ads” is to show who is getting a diploma and to encourage those who may be falling behind to get help. The “ads” are not intended to feature the school leaders but to feature a cross section of seniors (leaders and non leaders, athletes and non athletes, etc.).
The program was started last year and has continued to be one of the countywide initiatives of the BCASC.
d. Cure Finders
Coral Glades HS informed the members of they will be hosting a Relay for Life Event. Schools will be able to purchase booths at the event.
e. Environmental Project
Coral Springs Charter School informed the students that various schools have begun their projects. Charmin-Madonna had a beach clean-up and plans to work with the City of Hollywood Green Team on two specific projects to increase the native plant area in the City of Hollywood. They are also continuing the recycling program in school. Cypress Bay HS went to the Long Key Nature Center to participate in a park cleanup. They are doing a school beautification project by going around the school and help custodians clean for the day. Coral Glades will be having a beach cleanup at Deerfield Beach on December 15 from 7am to 12 noon. Hollywood Hills High School have planed a cleanup and planting session to improve the campus. It will focus on environmentally friendly plants. New River Middle School have partnered with John U. Lloyd beach state park for several environmental projects. They also had a beach cleanup on September 16 for the International Beach Cleanup Day.
f. Holiday Cards for VA Hospitals
By December 5, 2012, over 800 cards were collected. December 6th, the Hallandale HS SGA Adviser along with six student members assisted Mr. Roland with boxing and shipping the cards to local VA Hospitals. They were mailing on Friday, December 7th. Only three schools missed the deadline.

Miramar will be emailing the schools the information once they have completed their phone conference later on today.

Dillard HS is having a Holiday Dance. Stranahan HS will be hosting Black History events February 2-4. Hollywood Hills will be having a Pep Rally where the proceeds from the proceeds will be going towards Great Strides. Pompano Beach HS had a shadowing events for students from Sweden. Nova HS held a Black Out bullying event. McArthur gave Holiday Grams to their teachers.

Coral Glades High School Auditorium January 24, 2013
I. President Felicia Botting called the meeting to order at 8:43 AM
a. Cypress Bay High School’s Army JROTC presented the colors.
II. Guest Speakers
a. Cypress Bay High School’s SGA President, Jamie Backlaire, extended warm greetings to the members of the BCASC. Ms. Santore, an Assistant Principal at Cypress Bay, extended greetings as well.
b. Joe DiMaggio
The representative from Joe DiMaggio informed the members that the money fundraised this year will go to the Cardiac Unit at the hospital. Afterward, she showed a compilation video of the various success stories the patients the hospital has cared for. She informed the members that the Glove Challenge will begin next month.
c. Voter's Registration
Tonya Edwards from the Broward County Supervisor of Elections Office thanked all of the students for participating in the November 2012 Election. She informed the students of the increases in the amount of voter turn out.
III. Reading of the Minutes/Roll Call
a. Boyd H. Anderson moved to forgo the reading of the BCASC Minutes from December 13, 2013. Cypress Bay seconded the motion. The motion was carried with a unanimous vote.
b. Roll was taken. Secretary Eddie Oliver, Jr. informed BCASC that the schools present were Western HS, Nova HS, Coral Springs HS, Stoneman Douglas, Coral Glades HS, Monarch HS, Pompano HS, Gulfstream MS, Cooper City HS, McArthur HS, Fort Lauderdale HS, McFatter HS, New River MS, Miramar HS, Taravella MS, West Glades MS, Piper HS, Boyd Anderson HS, New Renaissance MS, Everglades HS, Stranahan HS, Flanagan HS, and Hollywood Hills HS.
IV. Treasurer’s Report
a. Treasurer Victor Ly reported that there is $5,438.04 in the scholarship fund and $3,800.00 in the operational fund, which are both subject to audit.
V. Officer Reports
a. President
President Botting read the letters of gratitude from the Veteran Hospitals where the Holiday Cards were sent.
b. Student Adviser to the School Board
b.i. Mariah Brown
The sign up for Speak Up Speak Out has begun. This is needed for her to inform the School Board members the issues and concerns of the students. She extended gratitude Chatterton and Cooped City for signing up for a SUSO which will be taking place on Monday. Student Adviser elections will be taking place at the March meeting. The last day to submit your application is February 15th.

b.ii. Blaire Hirt
Blaire Hirt reported that the meetings coming up for February are D.A.C, or District Advisory Council, North Area, Central area, South area, ESE, Attendance, Code of Conduct, and Diversity. The School Board is really trying to push involvement on the Diversity committee. As many students as possible are allowed to attend. If any student is interested in attending any meeting, please contact Blaire Hirt. She has emailed all of the students that signed up. However, she needs to see Amber Hamilton, a delegate from Plantation and Blanch Ely.
c. Student Activities Liaison
Mr. Roland informed the students that only 40% of high school students consider themselves active. Mr. Roland showed the students present the 'Let X Equals' video to encourage the students to get more students involved at school. The SFLTC/Camp Eagle Scholarship agreement is due on February 15. Camp registration for all Broward County students are due to Mr. Roland by May 1st. The first meeting for Broward Student Leader's Day is on February 5th at Piper HS. Applications for Student Adviser to the School Board are due on February 15th. Applications for the Outstanding Seniors Banquet are due on February 15th. Mr. Roland informed the members that a possibility of a Leadership Camp for Middle School delegates is in the works.
VI. Committee Reports
a. SATC
Cooper City HS informed the BCASC that event was a success. A video displaying pictures from the event was shown.
b. Wacky Olympics
The rules, games, and registration packets have been sent out to all middle and high schools. In order for your school to earn points that go towards winning any awards at Wacky Olympics, your school must host at least one game. Send a list of your schools top three games that you want to host to [email protected] so that we can keep track of who is hosting a game and who is not. Wacky Olympics will be taking place March 16th at Stoneman Douglas High School. Sign-in will begin at 7:45am and the actual event will begin at 8:30am.
c. Destination Diploma
There was no report to be given.
d. Cure Finders
Coral Glades reminded the member schools to submit the amount of money they fundraise from their events.
e. Environmental Project
There was no report to be given.
f. Joe DiMaggio Glove Challenge
On December 21st an email was sent out to announce that Miramar High School will be heading the Joe DiMaggio glove challenge. Another email was sent to the advisers on February 4th giving them the basic rules and outline of the Joe DiMaggio glove challenge. The gloves will be dispersed at the next BCASC meeting on Thursday February 14th. Schools will have from then to March 14th to sell the gloves. g. Spring Food Drive
Boyd H. Anderson informed the members that they want the members to engage in a Pyramid Food War where they compete another school in staking the highest and most pyramids for each food group. The members will be emailed a full description and instructions soon.
VII. Old Business
a. FASC
Mr. Roland informed the members that there is a meeting at Mater Academy this upcoming Saturday. Mr. Roland encouraged the members to submit Project of the Year Awards as well as reminded the students of the due date to submit Member of the Year, Adviser of the Year, and Principal of the Year was the next day in his office. FASC has been commissioned to institute a Five Year Plan.
b. Broward Student Leaders Day
Mr. Roland reiterated the due date for school submissions and the meeting dates for the committee to meet.
c. Sandy Aid
West Broward was no present to give their report.
d. D6 President Report
The D6 President reminded the students that the D6 meeting was this Saturday. Also, the members were informed that the last D6 Meeting was a success.
VIII. New Business
a. FASC Meeting in Gainesville
At the FASC meeting in Gainesville, there will be no redistricting. Dues will be $80. $25 times the number of members schools in that specific district will be the amount FASC sends back to that district to be used to recruit.
b. Long Range Plan
Mr. Roland proposed that BCASC Officers form a committee to institute their own Five Year Plan. Coral Glades motioned to form a committee to create and propose the BCASC Long Range Plan. McFatter seconded the motion. In discussion, are student delegates from member schools are welcomed to become involved in the committee. The motioned passed unanimously.
IX. At my school we…
Boyd Anderson informed the members that on every Wednesday, their student body has Work Out Wednesday where the students engage in line dancing in order to burn calories. Pompano HS and Stoneman Douglas informed the members of their intent to run for D6 Office at the upcoming meeting.

a. Patriot Paws A representative from Patriot Paws conducted a presentation on behalf of Patriot Paws. She informed the members present the services that the organization provides. Also, she showed the members a first hand account of the training process the organization takes the dogs through with her guest dog. b. Cure Finders Coral Glades HS informed the members that two fundraising events will take place. Promotional fliers were available for the student delegates. e. Environmental Project Coral Springs Charter School informed the schools to continue to submitted their reports to them. They also shared what some of the member schools were doing for their individual Environmental Project. f . Joe DiMaggio Glove Challenge Miramar HS was not present. VII. Old Business a. Long Range Plan President Botting informed the members that the Officers have begun working on the devising a Long Range Plan. Also, information regarding a committee meeting will be sent out soon. VIII. New Business a. BCASC Conference It will take place on Friday, May 17th at Pompano Beach HS. The theme is Major League Leaders. The officers are working on planning the convention. There are workshops are available for school to sign-up and present. b. BCASC Elections Elections for the 2013-2014 BCASC Executive Board will take place at the Convention. The rules are similar to that of FASC. The rules are available are on the website. IX. At my school we… All of the participating schools shared what fundraising activity they did for Valentine's Day.
