Also noted past 2100 last evening on 3985, s-off of 3985 has been confirmed as 2300. So the schedule is 1100-2300 now (x0900-2100). 6003 not heard evenings, so may have an early s-off. Reception has been rather weak for some days now due to coronal streams. (Anker Petersen-DEN, Dec 29) Perhaps this is the latest incarnation of Radio Voice of One Free Ethiopia/Voice of Ethiopian Patriotism/Free Radio Voice of Ethiopia Unity/Voice of United and Free Ethiopia. I believe they all used the Wed and Sun only schedule via the CIS [to make it clear via Kiev-UKR, ed]. I think that the ETHiopian Nat Congress backed these previous operations, but it remains to be seen who is behind this one. No logs or any nx of these progrs in over a year, but it looks as though they are still around. (Takeshi Hashimoto-JPN, Dec 29) Pyongyang FS no longer has total blackouts. Instead they switch off one or two or occasionally three pairs of txers every now and then to reduce the load on the power grid. Two txers usually have a strong buzz, and a third (standby?) txer also seems to have this problem to a lesser degree. Except for 6070 all FS txers appear to be located at the same site, making a total of 9 at this site plus the possible standby one. 6070 (6100 at other times) appears to be one of the ex-Swiss units, staying exactly on freq. Just as I had written the above lines ALL FS txers again went dead and remained dead. 6400 and 11680 stayed on for a while, but finally also gave in. Even 4450 had a problem and did not start on schedule, the first time I have noted this one to be affected. It did come on a while into the progr. 4405 was also active for a while, but died again. 9665, 6250, 4120, 6010 have been off all morning. When these are off, 2850, 3250, 3320 and 3560 are always off as well, although they are not normally audible here until after 1200 or so. (Olle Alm-SWE, Dec 30)

As of Jan 1, 2000, Progr 2 of Lietuvos Radijas will change freq at its Vilnius site: 612 replaced by 1107, be used with 25 kW of power. There are intentions to make the same change at the Klaipeda site, but no concrete decisions have been made so far. Vilnius 612 with 50 kW of power will be used in the very near future for relays of R Polonia's bcs in Belarusian daily 1730-1755. It is highly possible that this will start Jan 1, 2000 as well. Later in Jan or Feb, relays of RFE-RL bcs in Belarusian are to be added, as well as relays of R Racja, a Belarusian stn based in Bialystok-POL. These relays will be made by a new Lithuanian broadcaster R Baltic Waves, which was licensed in Aug 1999 to use Vilnius MW 612 throughout the year 2000. Radio Baltic Waves plans to add its own programming later in the year 2000, depending upon financing from western free speech and human rights foundations. Radio RACJA starts on 105.5 MHz (off-topic as non-Lithuanian, nevertheless related to the above) TVP1 (Polish TV) reported today in its main newscast that R Racja started broadcasting in Bialystok-POL, on 105.5 MHz. The reporter said that at this time R Racja would broadcast daily 1500-1600 in Belarusian with short main information summaries in Polish. Later, it would "gradually increase the amount of airtime after direct links to Sowlany txing center near Bialystok are established", said the reporter. As the camera showed also the studio of R. Racja in Bialystok, and an announcer at work, I presume that they will produce own progrs, not the same that are bc on SW (the latter are largely produced in Minsk, Belarus). (Sigitas Zilionis, DX Editor Dec 29) Lithuanian State Radio & TV (LRT) decided on 3 Jan to reduce drastically the bc times from 15 Jan-15 Feb as an emergency measure to cope with the imminent financial crises of the company. During that time the following schedules will apply: LR-1: 0400-2200 on FM & 1557, 0400-1800 on 666. LR-2: no txions* LR-3: no txions *) The LR-2 MW txs on 612/1107 will however carry relig prgrs on Sun and live bcs from parliament on Tues & Thurs. On 1 Jan, the non-commercial Radio Baltic Waves (RBW) [Lithuanian: Baltijos bangu radijas] started in Vilnius on 612 kHz (50kW). The stn is aimed at ethnic Belarusians in LTU and listeners in BLR. It currently is on the air with a relay of R Polonia in Belarusian at 1730-1800. Later the stn will add further relays of Belarusian language prgrs (like R Liberty, R Racja) and is planning to air also own prgrs. Address: P.O.Box 3245, LT-2013 Vilnius.

  • In connection with the start of RBW, Lithuanian State Radio 2 left 612 kHz in Vilnius and moved to 1107 kHz. (Bernd Trutenau-LTU, 5 Jan) LUXEMBOURG Media journalist Michael Fuhr did some research about "Luxembourg 208" and found, that a first test txion of three hrs duration already took place early in Dec; evidently nobody came across MW 1440 during these time... The start of regular sce is now annd for "early 2000". The UKRADIO.COM site was running the below included report, which also points out, that the 1440 tx at Marnach is currently running 300 kW only; until know it was just known that a few years ago the output power was reduced from 1200 down to 600 kW, but the further reduction to just a quarter of full power didn't became public knowledge until now. No idea what they mean with "new equipment", some modification of the antenna system at the Marnach site I guess. This was reason enough to visit Eric in London, early Dec. He was to pick me up around 1830 near Victoria stn but due to the heavy traffic it was an hour later. We were to go to the new studio building near Tottenham Bridge Road but we didn't get there. The reason for this was that we took a long drive through London to hear how the signal of the test txions, which were on the air for only a few hrs, sounded in the Capital. I must say I was not disappointed at all. Remembering those old days there was always a fading signal but this time, using the new equipment in Luxembourg, it sounded rely good. With a power of 300 kW the tests could be heard in the main parts of EUR. When the stn will be officially on the air, probably somewhere at the end of Jan, the power will be around 600 kW. Wiltshire told me that CLT/UFA uses a lot of monitoring stns all over EUR to get RRs. Mainly Ham-operators all over EUR send in their reports and from Italy to Norway and from Scotland to Poland the signal is well received. The main reason of these test progrs is to show potential sponsors how the signal beams into Britain. More regular bcs will commence in the course of 2000 once a progr to distribute windup radios is implemented. Time and freqs: Jan 1st 0427-0530 12070 & 15320. They have designed a QSL-card with the logo of "1584 AM", may be later "R Caroline" This logo will be used for the letters and enveloppes, too. Ruud Vos has visited a printer and Mr. Poeze has agreed with the costs of printing the QSL-card. As soon as the cards are ready they will be send to everybody who has send a correct report. In the mean time "1584 AM" has received over 50 reports. As you will know this week a letter containing general information has been send to those who have send a RR. Ruud Vos told me that may be Dec 30th until Jan 4th there will be another series of tests. There are some problems with the tx and the aerial. There are plans to use a mast of about 100 metres on the building of an electricity stn on the west side of the city of Utrecht provided there will be no disturbances. There are plans to set up another radiostn on a freq of MW 1602 in the northeastern part of the Netherlands. (Herbert Meixner, Bernd Mayr-AUT, Dec 31) RNZLI on 6105 was audible at 1100 when the celebrated the arrival of the new Millennium. (Graham Powell-UK, Dec 31) 6105 RNZLI 1059 bells heard under WYFR (WYFR off at 1100) counting down to new millenium, three mins of the sound of fireworks(!), then reports from around the country and Scott's Base in Antarctica; into 24 hrs of nothing but Kiwi mx on Nat R. (Brandi-NJ, ANARC, Dec 31) NZL on 6105 at 1005-1059 was mixing with WYFR in Sp (guess no one reminded Adrian Sainsbury that WYFR was on this channel before 1100), but WYFR was off just before the clock struck midnight in NZ, 1100 UTC, so I had a good signal when the celebrations began; heard comment and some live rock mx until around 1120, when I tuned out. (Joe Hanlon, DXLD by GH, Jan 1) PAKISTAN Azad Kashmir R noted Dec 31 at 1600 on 3663 with relay of R PAK nx in En, regularly a fair signal in NoIND file: parallel 792 & much stronger 4790v in local evenings. Afternoon freq 7267v is also well heard, e.g. at 1000 on Jan 1. In general this stn sounds much like a standard R PAK regional stn, with frequent relays of nx and other programming from Islamabad. I'm also hearing Pakistani dom stns on 7110 during local daytime (listed as Rawalpindi) and Quetta on 5027v evenings and tentatively 7169v daytime, all rather distorted. Other listed domestic HF freqs not traced, I suspect that many must be inactive. Sorry I wasn't aware of this but stn claims has been on the air since three months back. When I asked the control room, they said they are using 11905 !! 11670 is from 1615-1845, and is heard with fair signals here in Colombo on the ground wave. It is also carried on FM during the first hour on 94.5 MHz. More details in a few days time (or in the morning) after contacting the Ekala txing site. As you will know sometimes the progr people and the control room do not know what is happening. The language is Sinhala with nx at 1715. S-off at 1845 with vocal NatAnth sung in Sinhala. Mike had it on tape, and the missing word was Rothmans (cigarettes). (Rothmans are the best). Neither he, nor I, could hear an ID though. Today, I tried again at 0555, and there was a stn coming over R Rossii in a lang much like Ar, but accented. Mx being played was much like that from the Horn of Africa area. Txion suddenly stopped at 0602, and Rossii was alone on channel. I tuned away and found 7270 audible again in Fr with news at 0604. Fair level, and Rohrdorf 7265 only weak, so not much splash. I tried it again around 0615, but it was going down then. On 7200 I found another stn mixing with R Rossii again at 0606 in an Ar like lang. There was singing in the background - yet another stn ? French was then heard from about 0620 - mentioned some days of the week (dimanche etc.). A choir could be heard and then what might have been a commercial "... Zambico..." ? More talk in Fr but also what sounded like Horn of AF mx again in background (accordean instruments etc.)(this was NOT coming from Rossii). This one is becoming quite a puzzle ! (Noel R. Green-UK, Jan 2) I guessed that you might have some difficulty on 7200 at 0600, but the nx that SDN is on air at - and before - 1700 is very interesting, and I will try again to hear it today. SWL's/dx-ers have been concentrating in the 9200 kHz range, and obviously not tried down within the 7 MHz range to hear it. This may well have been what I was hearing on Jan 2nd at around 0600. But I also think there is a Fr speaking WeAFrican operating there too, but very difficult to verify due to mutual interference. I certainly would be most interested if you do have any success mornings. Re 7270 : I still believe this to be GAB. I clearly heard mention of "Gabon" and "Gabonaise" when I logged it in Aug-Sep-Oct last year around 0600, and wondered if it replaced their 4777 outlet, which I couldn't then hear. (Noel R. A typical grey line reception was now in Dec between certain parts of EUR and Vanuatu around 0700. The Sun was coming up here in EUR and setting down in Vanuatu area of the PAC. Announcing 6020 and 9560 to EUR, 6080 and 9610 to RUS, CIS and KAZ, and 9870 to NoAM. Signal was fair to good, with 9560 poor to fair, and 9610 only poor. (Walter Salmaniw-CAN, hcdx Dec 24) As previously mentioned, 9870 is from Kyiv. As it is beamed to the NW the signal is usually good here (and evidently in NAm), while the other ones (6020, 9560, 9600, 9610) are weak. When 9810 signs off at 0600 it is retuned to 9870 before being switched off. 9810 fades in at the same time as 9600, 9610, while Lviv 9785 fades in later. Here is what Ed had to say: Well, the one's I heard where back in the late 70- 80's. At that time, the was 'no' response direct so I (I guess some after effects from the 60's)I sent a whole bunch to the Director of R Hanoi . In about 2 or 3 months, I got back a very nice two page letter with the whole list of regionals which I heard, listed and all verified. The 'only' regional still holding out is Son La. I've sent countless rpts for this stn via Hanoi and all I get back is the usual card with no details, or a pennant or one time a schedule. They just won't verify it for me. So the next time I hear Son La I going to try a 'direct' route and use a Vn RR and see what happens. Saigon was another story, that took about 4 months verify way back in 1967. Got the nice VTVN Card for 9620. The only suggestion is try several reports direct and at the same time try the same reports via Hanoi and see what happens. But at least direct the reports to the Director or the Assistant Director so it gets the proper attention. • BC-DX 447 15 Jan 2000 ________________________________________________________________________ AFGHANISTAN I noted Kabul on Dec 29 (and subsequent days) on MW 1107 during our local Indian evening, including the regular En slot at 1500-1515 including talk on Islam and Islamic-style choruses sung in En by male voices -- lyrics such as '(indistinct) AFG, your holy religion is Islam, your constitution is Koran', closing at 1515 with annt to the effect: 'thanks for listening, see you again at same time tomorrow' followed by ID in unknown lang including phrase 'Kabul, AFG'. Unfortunately signal always fades under co-channel Indian stn when an En ID should be audible at top of hour, so I'm not sure exactly what they call themselves now. No trace of them on 7200 which is dominated by VOIRI Tehran at that time. There is a strong and distorted signal audible here at 0515-0600/0645v on 7199.5v, but I've no idea whether it's them -- working on it. • BHUTAN 5030 BBS: They came in the best ever today. My technique for checking on them is that I compare 5030 to 6750. These are normally in parallel, and the usual progr is alternating talk by M&W. If you don't hear them in parallel, things look promising on 5030. At tune-in at 1140, not only were they not parallel, but the mx on 5030 was between S6 and S7. Since the mx was what we refer to as "SE Asian," I thought this was a very rare occasion that 5030 is not //6750. Once I hrd En and the BBS theme mx, I couldn't believe it. No time pips, so I'm almost sure that CHN was off. I hrd clear IDs at 1200 and 1215. The audio just wouldn't die; they were still audible at 1233, when I decided I had to leave for work (I was half an hour late already). (Maroti-NY, NU Jan 7) Definite En nx by YL ancr at 1205 tune-in Jan 7. Tune-in time and slop from 5025 made a positive ID impossible using the radio/antenna combo available at the time (HF-225/E). I later compared notes with George Maroti, and based on our conversation I feel confident that it was indeed BBS, so I'll upgrade my logging from "tent." to "presumed." Were I there at 1200, I would have most definitely hrd the ID. NUers might want to watch this this weekend in case conditions remain favorable. My only question is prompted by Victor G.'s logging: Are they off the air altogether on Sat/Sun, or do they have En nx at 1200 on Mon-Fri but another lang at 1200 on Sat/Sun ? If the latter, Sat morning might be worth a try. Around 1500 I can hear BUL under HOL with a progr, which is obviously not the "Horizont" progr. However, I have not yet heard any definite ID. Different sources give different information on that freq. I remember having heard Blagoevgrad on 747 in 1993 in the morning. Any hints ? (HDB, Jan 10) Well Hans-Dieter I checked the excellent website of the Bulgarian Radio: www.nationalradio.bg from 1730 until 2215 MW 747 is used for the ext sce of R Bulgaria Sofia, a.o. in Bul, Se, Gr, Turk. When linking on this site for the regional progrs; it mentions the Blagoevgrad progr on 347 kHz (this must be a typo for 747 !!) with 150 kW. So check this website for yourself, when linking for the regional progr you have to choose for the Bulgarian lang first, there is option to choose for the cyrillic or the "western" alphabet and there you can read the freq-schedule of the regional progr ! (Nicolas Eramo-ARG, via edxp Jan 9) GUAM Eff from the A00 period (March 26th), KTWR will discontinue the Pacific DX Report progr, as well as several other locally produced features. This decision has been made by the TWR AS PAC Board of Directors. At present, PDXR is bc four time each week in the En sce. EDXP has been a key information source for the progr every week since its inception, providing scripts for the 174 weeks in which the bc has been on the air, with the writing work shared between Mick Ogrizek and myself. Regrettably, there will no longer be any scripts produced for PDXR by us, but EDXP material will continue to be used as a key nx source until the progr terminates late in March. EDXP QSLs will continue to be offered until that time. Host Charlie Troxell advises that he and his family will move to another ministry on Guam during April. As a matter of interest, all of those 174 weekly scripts were compiled voluntarily by us, with financial support neither sought nor expected. The audience of PDXR is considered to be high, but that seems not to be of interest to the people responsible for policy and programming at KTWR. This is similar to the situation when KTWR first came on the air, when we assisted with setting up the first DX progr on KTWR - "DX Listener's Log", which was hosted by Bill Damick, who subsequently returned to the USA. Sad

  • to see the end of this progr, and we hope that our work over those years has been recognised and appreciated by the global SW monitoring community. Nevertheless, they are blaring all over the Net. There's www.navrangradio.com a "click-to-play" site, something like www.indiafm.com there's www.indiaradio.com or Anil Ki Awaaz as it is popularly known, with a weekly live show; there's www.intelindia.com/bharatvani which has hundreds oh Hindi songs plus an online Hindi teacher; there's the much improved All India Radio site at air.kode.net and the colourful www.mayoo.com with its hot remix section. It's a lot of fun to hunt for Indian "radio" sites on the Net and discover how they are getting themselves heard. Tune in, and trip out. (Rumen Pankov-BUL, Dec 29) ISRAEL I have some information from Moshe Oren, Frequ Manager at Bezeq, concerning upcoming changes to Israel R freqs, eff Jan 4: 1900-2200 9385 replaces 17545 and 13800. 2200-2300 9395 replaces 13800, all using 300 kW. There will be no 9 MHz freq 2300-2400. The 50 kW tx on 9385 will only run 0000-0500. This unit is only capable of operating on two preset freqs, 15615 during the day and 9385 at night. It was not possible to run a single freq thru' 1900-0500 and avoid interference from Pakistan and WEWN. It is hoped the signal will be stronger as a result of the change. Also 0500-0515 11605 will change to 7475. Eff Jan 7: 2000-2100 7510 the fixed log periodic at 341 degrees will be changed to a curtain antenna to try to improve the signal. The curtain is only supposed be used up to 7470, which is why it was not used previously. (Alan Holder-UK, Jan 3, DX LISTENING DIGEST via GH) 6898 Galei Zahal on SW: Last week a DX friend handed me a couple of interesting publications from ENIGMA, European Number Stations Information Gathering and Monitoring Association. (17-21 Chapel Street, Bradford, West Yorks, BD1 5DT, England). They publish a magazine twice a year. It doesn't include precise information on the possible GZ SW location, but they tell interesting

  • things about Israel SW activity. Israel number stn txions on 8127 have had technical problems with Galei Zahal txion being heard on the background on the carrier. The same situation occurred on 10125. Several RTTY stns, which are known to be bcing from the txing facility near Tel Aviv, have also had the same problem. This source also says that Arutz Sheva, an Israeli nationalist wing owned offshore radio - that has been incidentally closed down by the current ISR govt - has been also used in Israeli number code txions. According to direction finding beamings, signals were coming (1995) from three locations; from Tel Aviv, near Eilat, and 50 km NW from Tel Aviv in Mediterranean, the QTH where Arutz 7 radio ship was anchored. Obviously, the clear and loud signal on 6898 was not a mistake, but it is probable that the origin of signal has been some military txing stn. Tel Aviv txing complex seems like a good candidate. Afternoon freq 7267v is also well heard, e.g. at 1000 on Jan 1. In general this stn sounds much like a standard R PAK regional, with frequent relays of nx and other programming from Islamabad. I'm also hearing Pakistani dom stns on 7110 during local daytime (listed as Rawalpindi) and Quetta on 5027v evenings and tentatively 7169v daytime, all rather distorted. Other listed dom HF freqs not traced, I suspect that many must be inactive.
