FAQs
Q.1. - What exactly does this recognition mean?
The BBI Synergy Label Pilot is a new pilot initiative that recognizes the value and excellence of Innovation Action proposals submitted under the H2020-BBIJTI-2018 Call and qualified above the quality threshold. These proposals were deemed to deserve funding but did not receive it due to budget limits. This recognition should improve the reputation and recognition of the organizations participating in the proposals and facilitate the search by the consortia for alternative source of funding provided by EU funding organizations, EU Member States and regions or other possible funding organizations.
Q.2. - What are the criteria to receive such a recognition?
Due to the high quality of the proposals received, BBI JU has proposed to award with the BBI Synergy Label all the Innovation Actions included in the reserve list of the H2020-BBIJTI-2018 Call. The list of proposals that have accepted to be awarded with the BBI Synergy Label and confirmed the agreement of all members of the consortium were communicated during the event “Synergy Labels: a catalyst for additional funding opportunities”. The event was part of the “Research and Innovation Days” organised by the European Commission in Brussels between 24 and 26 September 2019.
Q.3. - Would it still be possible to accept the recognition of the Synergy Label Pilot if we re-submit the proposal in the coming Call for proposals?
Yes. The possibility to participate in the BBI JU Synergy Label Pilot is given to Innovation Action proposals under the H2020-BBIJTI-2018 Call that because they were qualified above the quality threshold were deemed to deserve funding but did not receive it due to budget limits. The acceptance of this recognition does not prevent the possibility to re-submit the proposal in future calls.
Q.4. - If we accept the recognition given by the Synergy Label Pilot but we re-submit the proposal with an updated and modified version of the proposal awarded with the BBI Synergy Label, BBI JU will support the initial proposal in exploring for alternative source of funding or this could also be related to the updated project?

Proposals subject to be part of the BBI Synergy Label Pilot are those included in the reserve list of H2020-BBIJTI-2018 Call, therefore the BBI Synergy Label will support the initial proposal in exploring alternative source of funding.
Q.5. - As we are the coordinator of the project, we should take charge of managing also the parts inherent to the other partners or BBI JU will manage each partner separately?
The consortium should decide who will be responsible for managing the subsequent steps following the award of the BBI Synergy Label. It can be the coordinator or any other partner of the consortium. The chosen representative will take charge of managing the activities on behalf of the whole consortium. Prior to the acceptance of the award, the Coordinator should ensure that the whole consortium agrees to accept it.
Q.6. - What will be the role of the BBI JU Programme office?
The role of the BBI JU for the Synergy Label Pilot will be limited to the award of the label, dissemination of the initiative and guidance to the awarded proposals towards the main contacts in the respective relevant funding organizations.
Dissemination and communication activities will ensure that EU funding organizations as well as EU Member States and regions are informed about the BBI Synergy Label.
For future Calls, and based on the experience of the BBI Synergy Label Pilot, BBI JU could carry out specific agreements with Member States/regions and additional EU funding organizations that could accelerate the uptake of the Synergy Label and the sustainability of the action in the coming years.
Q.7. - Is BBI JU planning to establish some kind of agreement with possible funders?
BBI JU is currently working with different funding organizations in order to ensure the recognition of the proposals awarded with the BBI Synergy Label Pilot. Through the Synergy Label, BBI JU will support proposals in exploring for alternative source of funding such as the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI), the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF), Thematic Investment Platforms and also instruments offered by national, regional and/or local development agencies. In that sense, BBI JU signed in September, during the event “Synergy Labels: a catalyst for additional funding opportunities” an agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
As mentioned in the question above, for future Calls, and based on the experience of the BBI Synergy Label Pilot, BBI JU could carry out specific agreements with Member States/regions and additional EU

funding organizations that could accelerate the uptake of the Synergy Label and the sustainability of the action in the coming years.
Q.8. - Which concrete measures will BBI JU put in action to help us to receive alternative funding?
Please refer to the questions 6 and 7.
Q.9. – When did the launch of the initiative happened?
The Secretariat of the BBI Synergy Label has contacted the coordinators of those proposals subject to receive the Synergy Label from Call 2018 asking for their willingness to accept this recognition and the confirmation that all partners of the consortium agree on this decision by the 15th of August.
The Coordinators of the confirmed proposals received an invitation to attend the launching event “Synergy Labels: a catalyst for additional funding opportunities” that took place on 24 September in Brussels. During this event, BBI JU formally launched the BBI Synergy Label Pilot. During this event, proposals officially received the document certifying their participation in the BBI Synergy Labe Pilot. In addition, BBI JU signed the cooperation agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
