BBF Trustee Dr. Graham Johnstone has a long history of supporting medical mission service in Niger. In fall of last year, he provided o r t h o p e d i c surgery at SIM Galmi Hospital. During his visit, he performed 26 major surgeries. BBF is proud to support the work of Dr. Johnstone with over $8,900 in supplies, all that could fit into his bags for the trip.

Pawleys Island Community Church in South Carolina has supported a yearly medical and dental team to a needy village in Guatemala since 2005. This was our ninth trip. We partner with Iglesia Galilea, a Christian church in San Lucas, Guatemala, and with Kids Alive International, in our work in Guatemala. Wracked with civil war for decades, Guatemala has widespread poverty and 50% of the population is under 18. Zapote is a very poor village, located in a remote area of Southwestern Guatemala. During the rainy season, three rivers prevent access to this village because of high water levels. We crossed these three river beds, through very rocky roadways, traveling one and a half hours from our home base at an orphanage in San Lucas, Guatemala, to Zapote. Most of the land is owned by wealthy land owners, and the men of Zapote work in coffee and sugarcane fields, typically 12 hours a day, to earn barely enough money to feed their families, but little else. We operated a primary care clinic and dental clinic, with one doctor and one dentist, and excellent support of nurses, pastors, and other support staff in the school. We treated a wide variety of medical conditions, including starvation and malnutrition, parasites, chronic diarrhea, asthma, pneumonia, allergies, arthritis and other musculoskeletal pains, dental decay, hypertension, type II diabetes mellitus, depression and anxiety, discouragement and loss of hope. The medicines and supplies we received from generous donors like Brother’s Brother Foundation were incredibly vital to our mission there, without which we would have been crippled. We also saw many with visual impairment, much of which could be corrected with glasses supplied by generous partners. It was truly amazing to watch as someone with poor vision was tested for visual acuity, given a pair of glasses, slipped them on, and smiled in amazement as they saw clearly for the first time in years. Our group included some construction folks who really worked on some simple upgrades on the structure of the school, and fixed up the road in front of the school, and for a family with eight school-aged sons, our construction guys tore down their old little shack where several of the younger ones were relegated to

sleeping on the dirt floor, and rebuilt a more substantial house and supplied bunk beds so everyone had a bed to sleep on. At the completion of the project, the little guys were so excited about their new home, they were jumping on their beds! We are greatly indebted to you for your donation of supplies for our trip, without which we couldn’t have touched so many in Zapote, Guatemala. Thank you sincerely for your assistance with our trip. Thanks for all you do. Larry Kelly

My name is Kevin Meszaros and I am finishing up my master’s degree at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh. I am excited to be helping out at BBF with the mission trip program, where I fulfill orders for smaller quantities of pharmaceuticals from groups going abroad for short trips. I work with each group to get the information we need in order to provide the medical supplies that will help make their trips successful.
