Principal's Corner

Tweetification of the week—

Convince your students of the benefits of healthy habits

Follow US!

It has been a relatively quiet and consistent week as we have had a full week of schooling. This has been good as it has allowed everyone here to settle and get back into the rhythm of things. It is amazing that when a change of routine happens, you start to see inconsistencies creep in with student learning engagement and behaviour. So with our minds all fresh we look forward positively to the coming weeks and some great work to be done. It is going to be a big term as we have a number of important events happening: Mother’s Day, Open morning, Education Week – Open Evening, TLIM Electives, District Sports, production planning, reports and Learning Celebrations are all planned. So keep informed, mark in those dates, and get involved. Last Tuesday, our Electives started and it was fantastic to walk around and witness the students, mixed up and participating enthusiastically in a wide range of activities. I also noted a large number of parents bravely joining in and leading some electives. It was great to see further parental involvement in our classes. A reminder for existing families that we ask if you have a child beginning in 2018, please get your enrolment form in as soon as possible. The coming weeks will see a large number of school tours taking place as new family enrolments come in. Next week, we would like to prepare more BSPS brochures and do a ‘Kinder drop’. So if you can help through folding some brochures or you can drop some to a local kindergarten please let me or the office know, as any help would be greatly appreciated. Finally, NAPLAN is held next week, while the results are used it is also important to remember these a just a snapshot of student performance, especially in comparison to our teachers’ yearly judgements. So it is important that we maintain a positive and supporting approach to such assessments. We wish all the best for those involved.! Have a great week!

Hello, my name is Bronwyn Upton and I am the Bayswater South Primary School Chaplain. I would like to outline for you the role a Chaplain plays within the school community. A Chaplain will-

Provide care and be a friend

Be a 'listening ear' for those who need someone to talk to

Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)

Help a child sort through a problem or an issue

Run support groups (eg. Friendship programs)

Connect with parents as the need arises

Refer a child to other professionals

Support teachers in class, helping out as needed Matters of faith are only pursued when a person wishes to talk about them Life is not always easy. But knowing that someone is there for you to talk to, to listen, to encourage and to walk alongside you can be very comforting and can help you through difficult situations. My chaplaincy role is about offering care and support to the whole school community. It's about working with students, parents and teachers to assist in meeting the need s that arise in our daily lives. Children today have to deal with some very 'grown up' issues such as family break-up, grief and addictions. Or they may be struggling to make friends or to fit in with their peers. These can be very traumatic for children and could affect their ability to cope with the stresses of daily life. As such it may be beneficial for your child to have someone who they can talk to. This would occur on a purely voluntary basis. If you would prefer that this interaction not happen for your child/ren, please contact the school. Please feel free to call me regarding anything I can help you with. I am available on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school betw een 9am – 2.30pm. Or leave a message anytime and I will call you back. Inside the Classroom - Grade 2’s Fictional Narratives

GRADE 2 CLASSROOM UPDATE

Our writing focus for Term 2 is narratives and this week we started to analyse the structure of fictional

narratives. Students listened to the story Jack and The Beanstalk and were able to identify the characters,

setting/s, problem and resolution. We also discussed the different elements of fairy tales such as special

beginning and ending words (Once upon a time or they lived happily ever after), magic, good characters

and villains and the presence of royalty and or a castle. Students then worked in groups and completed a

task using their five senses (what they could see, hear, smell, touch and taste) to describe a variety of

settings, such as a castle, farm, gingerbread house and forest. Here are some photos of the students

working cooperatively to achieve this task.

From Our Sports Captains

Due to the weather last Wednesday, the District Athletics was postponed until the 15th of June. A new notice will go out to all the students competing and they will need to return it in the coming weeks. The Scoresby District Cross Country will be held at Knox Athletics Track at 12:30 to 2:30 on the 19th of June. We hope all our competitors will have an enjoyable and successful run. It is good to see lots of people still doing the early morning fitness track. Despite the weather making it difficult, the students are still determined to participate. Keep up the great effort! It would be great to see even more students joining in this great program. The Year 5/6 Winter Interschool Sport is coming up and our first date for the competition is on the 8th of June. We are continuing to train for our team sport on Thursdays in the last hour. The teams are as follows: tee-ball, netball, football and soccer. Each of the sports will be played at a different venue in the surrounding suburbs. Jack and Jayde Sports Captains

From Our School Chaplain

Learning By Their Choices

Hi Parents, most of us want our children to become responsible for their behaviour and their relation-ships. One way to do this is to allow your children to experience the outcomes of their choices, whether smart or not so smart. That’s not to say we just let our children make mistakes haphazardly, they benefit from guidance and mentoring. They also need to be protected when their choices may impact long-term on their life or when their safety is at risk. But there are many times when experience is a child's best teacher.

A child who leaves their jumper home may get cold; a child who spends their week’s pocket money on Monday will have nothing left for the week; a sibling who annoys his sister risks being ostracised; and a child who skips sport training may miss out on being in the game that week. These are all natural conse-quences. They don’t require too much from us as parents, apart from standing back and not taking an “I told you so” attitude, which would likely undo the impact of the consequence. Allow their problem, to be their problem.

Often as parents we take on our children’s concerns and make them our own. If something doesn’t both-er them and there is no risk or infringement on other people’s rights, let them be. If they leave their homework until the last minute and don’t get it finished by the due date it shouldn’t bother you. They probably won’t do it again!

Some children are good at getting parents to take responsibility for their problems. There is a difference between taking responsibility away and making it easy for children to remember what they have to do. Remind children to take their lunch/don’t annoy their sister/put dirty sports clothes in the washing bas-ket, but don’t become responsible for these actions. Resist saving them from themselves. The temptation to save children from the outcome of their poor choice is difficult to resist, as they often put pressure on us to save them. If they don’t put their dirty sports clothes in the wash and have to wear them all muddy and smelly next game, they’d never do that again!

Link behaviour to outcomes. Sometimes the lessons children learn need some explaining. So be prepared to reinforce life’s lessons if they don’t understand the outcome of their behaviour. Allowing children to absorb life’s lessons is a tough gig for parents, but for some children and some situations, it’s the only op-tion. You just have to get out of the way and let them learn from their mistakes.

Parents’ Club News

Hello to all families. I hope you have all settled in nicely to term 2. Noted below is a snap shot of what is happening in Parents’ Club for this term and a sneak preview of up coming events later in the year. HOT FOOD TUESDAYS We commenced our Hot Food Tuesdays this week. The kids love this event and have been very supportive of it in previous years. The weather is getting colder and the children love looking forward to a warm lunch. A few reminders: **Please make sure that the food you send is thoroughly defrosted. With lunch time being at 11.00am it does not allow us much time to

heat food, let alone if the food is still frozen. Best to leave it out the day/night before just to be safe.

**Please also make sure that the food is wrapped appropriately, labelled with your child’s name and class and that the $1 is sent along with the food. I suggest wrapping the food in foil and then either taping the coin to the food or placing the food and the coin in a paper/plastic bag and seal it up.

Mother's Day Stall Next Thursday 11th May Parents’ Club will host its annual Mother's Day Stall. Prices will range from $1 - $10. This year we have lots of fabulous items to choose from. Get excited Mums you are sure to receive something wonderful !! Each class will get an opportunity to come and shop for their Mum. Please make sure that your child’s money is secure in their bag.

Excess ICT Equipment - To a good home!

As part of our school ICT plan we have recently updated to laptops across

years 3—6, leaving some outdated computer screens and keyboards over.

If you are in need of an LCD screen or keyboard, this excess equipment is

available to the community for a small cost, which would go towards our ICT

program for student use.

LCD screen = $10

Keyboard = $2

If you are interested please see office staff for information and/or payment
