17 August 2018 – Term 3 Week 4 Page 1 Office Hours 8.30am to 3.00pm SAFE RESPECTFUL RESPONSIBLE PRINCIPAL REPORT NEWSLETTER WEEK 4 TERM 3 2018 TLLC ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARDS Our annual Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community Academic Awards of Excellence was held on Wednesday at Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College, The Entrance Campus where 10 Stage 3 students from BBPS were recognised for excellence in academic areas. It is a pleasure to join with our learning community to acknowledge high quality achievement. Congratulations to Angus, Liliana, Ella, Ashleigh, Cohen, Finnegan, Kassia, Kynan, Jack K and Cooper. RAIN DANCE FOR FARMERS Our Student Representative Council have elected to support famers as their fundraising cause for this year. The students have decided to hold their discos on Tuesday 28 August, increasing their usual admittance fee to $4.00 with all monies raised going to ‘Buy a Bale’ for drought effected areas. A number of students have asked if they are allowed to donate more of their money to this cause if they wish, so we will accept any monies donated on the evening of the disco. As per usual, the Years K-2 Disco will run from 4.30-5.30 pm and the Years 3-6 Disco from 6.00-7.00 pm. The dress theme for the night is ‘a farmer’s life’. We will also run a coin donation during our Fathers’ Day Breakfast on Friday 31 August for any families wishing to participate. Several teachers will be coming around with buckets and visiting adults are invited to donate a gold coin to the bucket collection. We will be providing ‘donation’ baskets for families during the week of 27-31 August, where families are welcome to donate non-perishable goods e.g. cans of food, shampoo, toothpaste etc., which we will organise to have distributed to farming families in need. BBPS is also supporting Terrigal High Schools “Doing it for our Farmers Donation Drive”. (See attached flyer for details). They are an official collection point for non- perishable food items and household items. These items can be dropped off to Terrigal High School’s main office up to 5.00pm from Monday to Friday. TELL US WHAT YOU THINK As an ongoing measure to review and strengthen our procedures, we regularly ask for input from our community. We will be utilising the 360 Reflection Tool, which is an online survey, to seek the views and thoughts of families regarding a range of areas across our school. This week, families who receive their newsletter by email should receive this survey. We hope you will take a few minutes to complete this, so we can have a rich and detailed picture of our community’s thoughts, in order to examine our BATEAU BAY PUBLIC SCHOOL Newsletter

We are celebrating Book Week from 18 August – 24 August. This year’s theme is Find your Treasure. There will be a Book Week parade on Wednesday, 22 August at 8.50 am under the COLA. Students can come to school dressed as their favourite book character or in keeping with the theme. We expect to see lots of pirates! The Premier’s Reading Challenge finishes on Friday 31 August at midnight. All student reading records are to be finished by then. Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 have completed the challenge during their library lessons.

Happy Reading, Mrs Buscombe & Mrs Lowbridge. CHESS REPORT We have just completed the Primary Schools Chess competition for 2018. This year we entered an A and a B side in the intermediate and championship grades. Each team played five other teams from across the Central Coast, including Gosford Public School, Central Coast Adventist School, Wamberal Public School and Terrigal Public School. All of our players were wonderful ambassadors for our school in all games and received compliments on their behaviour from teachers in the schools they visited. They played a total of five home and five away games. My sincere thanks to Mr Michael Garaty, Mr Shannon McKiernan and Mrs Misti McKiernan who very kindly transported our players to and from away games and supervised their visits to other schools. Ross McGowen Chess Co-ordinator.

2018 PREMIERS SPELLING BEE On Thursday 2 August, selected students from Stage 2 and 3 took part in the 2018 Premier’s Spelling Bee competition with Mrs Cartwright and Mrs Trigg. In stage groups students battled it out to spell some extremely difficult words. It took several rounds to determine our winner and runner-up for each stage. Congratulations to all students who took part. Stage 2 Winner – Zachary G 4M Stage 2 Runner-up – Jayden T 4M Stage 3 Winner – Jack S 6F Stage 3 Runner up – Jacob C 6F

The winner and runner up from each stage have been invited to participate in the Regional Finals at Peats Ridge Public School on Friday 14th September. Good luck boys! Mrs Rachael Trigg and Mrs Sherri Cartwright

RUGBY LEAGUE On Wednesday 8 August, the Under 11s Rugby League team travelled down to Werrington, Sydney to compete in the NSW All Schools Rugby League Carnival where the best team from each NSW division meet to play for the NSW title. The team represented Bateau Bay wonderfully on the day, displaying sportsmanship and courage against some excellent teams from Dubbo, Beresfield and Canterbury.

Although the boys were unlucky not to make it to the finals, they should be extremely proud of their efforts on making it to this stage of the competition. Congratulations Nathan Lyons NETBALL Last Friday our netball team travelled to Newcastle to play in the Netball NSW Schools Cup. The girls showed off their amazing netball skills and worked so well as a team that they were undefeated on the day, convincingly winning 6 out of 6 games in their pool. Mrs Fraser was so proud of all the girls and the sportsmanship they displayed as representatives for Bateau Bay. The girls will now travel to Maitland next Tuesday to play in the NSW Schools Cup Regional Finals where they will be up against the winning teams of all the other pools. It will be a challenging day for our girls and we wish them the best of luck.

DEBATING On Tuesday 7 August, students from Bateau Bay participated in their last scheduled debate of the Premiers Debating Challenge against Brooke Avenue Public School. The topic chosen was - 'That primary schools should teach compulsory swimming classes.' Bateau Bay was negative. We were represented by the speakers Emma M, Finnegan O and Kynan P with Georgia B as team adviser. The debate was well contested with valid points from both teams. Unfortunately, for us, the winning team was Brooke Avenue Public School. Emma is to be highly commended for her work as the first speaker, ably assisted by Georgia. Kynan and Finnegan presented well thought out rebuttals and arguments. Thank you to Joseph C. and Annalise S for their participation and commitment to the team during the competition. Also, thank you to Olivia H, Cooper D and Joseph C for assisting with the chairperson/ timekeeping during the competition. Mrs McGavin and I have enjoyed supporting these students in their debating journey and we would also like to gratefully acknowledge the support given by the associated parents with transport and the provision of afternoon teas.
