With new coaches, players, and student assistants, this year’s Tiger basketball team is

surrounded with hype. The Tiger’s will have no returning players from last year’s team that finished with a 16-15 record but many talented transfers and freshmen has Tiger fans excited.

Coming from Redlands Community College [Okla.], new head coach Steve Eck has Tiger fans raising the standards for men’s basketball. Eck made Redlands the winningest basketball program for the past six years. Eck even led the Cougars to the Division II national championship in his first year.

Eck brought four players with him from Redlands to help with scoring. Sophomore Chris Rhymes is one of the top transfers as he averaged 15 points per game before suffering an injury during the middle the of the season. Sophomores Eric McKinney and Preston Brown will also be counted on to make an impact as they each averaged nine points per game last year at Redlands. Sophomore Montrell McDonald, a transfer from Division I George Washing-ton University, will also make an impact for the Tiger basketball team along with in-state recruit Jack Crowder.

“The guys I brought from Redlands will keep the team balanced,” Eck said,

“but I will count on our in-state recruits to contribute and help us play better as a unit.”

Opposing teams will not be able to fo-cus on one player to shut down offensively as the Tigers have many guys that can pass and score.

Defensively, the Tigers will use their athleticism and quickness to make up for lack of size. No player on the roster is listed as taller than 6-foot-7. McKinney is looked

upon as the shot-blocker, while Brown will provide toughness. McDonald will threaten the opposing team by using his long arms to get into passing lanes and create turn-overs.

The Tigers are predicted to finish second in the Jayhawk East behind six time defending champion Coffeyville. In the Street & Smith’s rankings, the Tigers are ranked 13th in the country, while the NJCAA has the Tigers ranked 25th.

Guide to being a ‘Crazy’Cowley Crazies

It is not uncommon to see Cowley Crazies in face paint and Tiger fan gear. The Crazies formed two years ago and spearhead school spirit at athletic events. (Photo by Jackie Hutchinson)

BY JACOB EARLSSports Editor

Be a FANatic!”, that is what this year’s Cowley Crazies’ shirts display. With 32 members, the Crazies are growing

in size and are louder than ever at athletic events.

“They’ve been getting ‘crazy’ at games like they’re supposed to be,” Director of Student Life Kristi Shaw said.

The purpose of the Cowley Crazies is to promote “awesome” school spirit and sportsmanship at school sponsored athletic events. All members attend as many events as possible to make some noise for the Tigers.

The Crazies have four rules to follow while attending events:

1. No Profanity2. No Suggestive, Offensive Behavior3. Make sure not to get carried away

on pin pointing one player4. Noisemakers are not toleratedThe Crazies can never be missed while

attending an event as some of them wear wigs with goofy hats, short shorts with high socks, old-school Tiger jerseys, and/or outdated Halloween costumes.

Being a part of the Cowley Crazies can even pay for college tuition and books.

“It’s a sweet scholarship and it was a big influence on why I chose to come here,” freshman Jordan McIntire, a recipient of the scholarship, said.

The Crazies plan to be at every home game this year and even plan on branching out to away games. If you would like to be a part of the Crazies, contact Kristi Shaw by phone 620-441-5206 or by email at [email protected].

For those who think cheerleading is not a sport, there are at least 30 people who would disagree.

This year’s cheer squad consists of 19 females and 10 males that have “a lot of raw talent,” according to the new part-time cheer coach Rikki Hettenbach.

Hettenbach became the cheer coach after former cheer coach, Kristi Shaw took the Director of Student Life position.

“I’ve worked with Kristi Shaw, help-ing with Allstars since 2004, I also went to Cowley and cheered both years,” said

Hettenbach.The squad performed at Monday

Night Madness, Sept. 21 after only a few practice sessions together. They are cur-rently working on perfecting their ability to build pyramids, as well as getting a good start at their routine for nationals.

Nationals are held at the end of March, and will be in Overland Park in 2008.

A well put together group of young adults, with five team captains to keep them in line. “All the captains are Sopho-mores, and a very intricate part of the success. They know what they are doing.” Hettenbach explained.

Head Tigerette coach Lindsay Sanderholm has high hopes for this year’s team.

Sanderholm served as captain of Tiger-ettes her sophomore year of Cowley and is now in her tenth year of coaching.

The team is comprised of nineteen members; six of those being sophomores and thirteen freshmen.

The returning sophomores, Ashley Cochran, Raven McFall, and Kacie Schlegel, work together as co-captains.

According to Schlegel, some of their responsibilities as captain include maintaining good spirit, making sure ev-eryone looks good, and helping other team members out when they need it.

“I love meeting new girls and I am really looking forward to getting to know them better throughout the year,” said Schlegel.

The Tigerettes can be seen per-forming at all men and women’s basketball games, community events, and parades.

“My favorite part about coaching is getting to know wonderful young ladies each year that share my love for dancing and performing,” said Sanderholm.

Those interested in trying out for Tigerettes can set up a private audition with Sanderholm at 441-5301. Deadline for tryouts is May 2008. For more information, go to http://www.cowleytigers.com/dance/danceauditions.html

Coach Todd Clark was very busy this off-season, bringing in seventeen newcomers to this years

team. The Lady Tigers will be returning only four players from last year’s roster, who look to improve on their 20-12 (14-4 in conf.) finish. The Lady Tigers lost a close one to Butler CC in the second round of the Regional Tournament last March to

end their season.The Lady Tigers

were picked to finish third behind defending conference champion Coffeyville and Inde-pendence in this years Jawhawk East Coaches’ Poll.

“Independence has a lot of returning play-ers and Coffeyville is always in the top of the mix,” Coach Clark said.

This year’s team will be counting heavily on the large freshman class and looking for leadership amongst returning players Alexis Wright, Natasha Dra-ganic, Lauren Cherry, and Caitlin Spencer.

Alexis Wright, a 5’6” guard from Derby, KS, is the only returning starter and is one of six players from last year who played in all 32 games.

“Alexis has made good improvement over

the off-season and we will look to her to provide leadership,” Coach Clark said.

Natasha Draganic, a 6’2” post player with a nice perimeter shot, played limited minutes last season due to a knee injury.

“Tasha looks to have recovered nicely from her injury and looks very good early on.” Clark said.

Lauren Cherry is a 5’10” sophomore from Bennington, Kansas who will have a great opportunity to display her talents.

“Lauren is a phenomenal athlete, she will do good things for this team.” Clark said.

Caitlin Spencer is a tough 5’5” guard from South Haven, KS who is continuing to improve her skills.

“Caitlin is very important, she is a wonderful team player who knows her role and works very hard in practice,” Clark said.

Incoming freshman post-players that will be important for Cowley to make a run for the championship are Whitney Williams from Beaumont, TX and Shiro-lacille “Bebe” Holloway from Houston, TX.

Some freshmen out-of-state guards that will also help the Lady Tigers this sea-son will be Elena Yankova from Bulgaria, Noelle Jackson from Morrilton, AR, and Kenyetta Brown from Bronx, NY.

“Inconsistency will probably be an is-sue for us early on. We are relying on a lot of freshman,” Coach Clark said. “Hopeful-ly we will be a team who can fight through those early slumps. As long as we come together as a team we should be alright.”
