Oostburg (20-5) — With 6-9 big man Josiah VerVelde pro- tecting the paint and guards Ty- ler Hartmann and Kortu Josiah on the outside, the Dutch should challenge for the top spot in the Central Lakeshore Conference. 3. Sheboygan North (21-4) — Versatile, athletic sen- ior guard Ethan Guske leads the way for the Golden Raiders, who also expect big things out of 6-4 freshman Davis Larson. 4. PHOTO BY BRUCE HALMO/THE SHEBOYGAN PRESS Boys Preseason Formidable Five P P LYMOUTH It may not have necessarily been expected, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt any less. After falling to eventual state runner-up Kaukauna 59-44 in a sectional final at Fond du Lac, the Ply- mouth boys basketball team was not ready for its season to be over. “They didn’t want to be done,” head coach Jason Duff said. “I think sometimes, you can get that feel from a team like, they want to win, but if it ended tomorrow life would go on and they’d be perfectly fine with that. It kind of seemed like last year’s team, they didn’t want to think about what would happen if they didn’t get to play anymore.” Entering last season, the Panthers were picked for third in the Eastern Wisconsin Con- ference, behind Two Rivers and Waupun. What Plymouth did instead, was go 12-2 and win the confer- ence title, followed by a deep playoff run that included a thrilling, last-second win at home over Slinger and a tight 61-55 victory over No. 1-seed Beaver Dam in a sectional semifinal. “I think they felt like, they were confident and they be- lieved in themselves in any game that they played,” Duff said. “I think they felt they had a chance against anybody.” But then came Kaukauna, with a trip to State on the line in a packed house in Fond du Lac. Early on, Plymouth tried to take away the Ghosts’ low-post game, to which Kaukauna re- sponded by knocking down 3- pointer after 3-pointer. In the end, the Ghosts hit seven 3s on the night. “We were just one game away from State,” senior guard Cory Unger said. “We didn’t even think we were going to make it that far even. We were so close, we know we can make it. No doubt last year is going to drive us.” This year, however, the Pan- thers have expectations. The Wisconsin Basketball Year- book has them ranked No. 9 in Division 2 to start the season and tabbed the squad with 10 returning letter winners to win the EWC. “Our biggest challenge is handling expectations,” Duff said. “Can we handle success? Can we handle people patting us on the back and saying, ‘Hey you guys are pretty good, you guys going to go to State this year?’” That road to State is littered with obstacles, and difficult ones at that. Plymouth’s non- conference schedule features an impressive mix of solid Divi- sion 1 and Division 2 programs along with traditional small- school powerhouses Oostburg and Randolph. The combined record of the Panthers’ eight non-conference opponents a year ago was 127-71 (.641 win- ning percentage). “That was exactly by de- sign,” Duff said. “Every non- conference game was done with a purpose. Even a school that’s smaller, is a school that consistently has a very compet- itive program. We play Oost- burg, we play Randolph, and despite them being Division 3 or Division (5), these guys know they’re going to have to play well to win a game like that.” Past that, Plymouth’s post- season bracket features the likes of Ashwaubenon, Kaukau- na, Pulaski, Seymour and West O On n t th he e p pr ro ow wl l With10 returning letter winners from last year’s 20-6 team along with newcomers from a JV team that finished 21-1, Plymouth is poised for a breakout season in 2012-13. CENTRAL LAKESHORE CONFERENCE

BoysCedar Grove-Bel.

2011-12 record: 9-15, 5-11CLC (sixth)

Coach: Jim Meinen, 17thyear (157-196)

Returning letter win-ners: Jarret Jentges, 6-2 sr.;Brent Broctrup, 5-10 sr.; LoganPeterson, 5-10 jr.; RJ Lemmer-man, 6-7 jr.; AdamChier, 6-2 jr.;Spencer Bares, 6-1 jr.

Other prospects: AlexGiles, 5-10 sr.; Jacob Winkler,6-2 jr.; Alex Claerbaut, 6-2 jr.;Drew Emperley, 6-2 jr.; AaronChier, 5-9 so.; Ryan Lemmer-man, 6-6 so.

Outlook:TheRocketsmustreplace their top four scorersfrom last year, who combinedto average more than 42points per game. Junior RJLemmerman (6-7) and sopho-more Ryan Lemmerman (6-6)give Cedar Grove some size in-side while Logan Peterson (5-10) and Spencer Bares (6-1) willlead theperimeter. If theRock-ets can mature quickly —there’s just three seniorson theroster — they could be in linefor a top-half finish in the CLC.

Elkhart Lake-Glen.

2011-12 record: 6-17, 3-13CLC (seventh)

Coach: Jim Brown, sixth atElkhart (154-274 overall)

Returning letter win-ners: Derek Weiss, sr.; Ty Tau-benheim, sr.; Ollie Sadiq, sr.;Taylor Kaboord, sr.; AntonioBett, jr.; Luke Pritzl, jr.

Other prospects: LukeKlover, sr.; Cody Schmitt, jr.;Emerson Kuhn, jr.; AJ Lallen-sack, jr.; Trevor Taubenheim,so.; Stephan Clemens, fr.

Outlook: Kaboord is backafter averaging12.7 points pergame as a junior. Bett, Weissand Sadiq give Elkhart a solid

core of returnees, and if thenewcomers can adapt to thevarsity game and blend wellwith the returning letter win-ners, the Resorters have theability to make some noise inthe CLC under coach JimBrown, who returns to Elkhartwhere he coached in the early1990s.

Howards Grove

2011-12 record: 20-6, 12-4CLC (third)

Coach: Mark Christenson, third year at Howards (34-16,458-257 overall)

Returning letter win-ners:DavisNennig,6-4 sr.;Gar-rett Jahnke, 6-5 sr.; BrevinScholten, 6-0 sr.; Tom Hansen,6-1, sr.; Chris Niemann, 6-0 sr.;Austin Edge, 6-1 jr.; CJ Berg, 6-1jr.; Ethan Brinkman, 6-1 so.

Other prospects: LukeStanczyk, 6-1so.; JonahGerber,6-1 so.; Derrick Grimm, 5-5 fr.;Nick Brickner, 6-4 fr.

Outlook: Howards ad-vanced to a sectional final ayear ago before falling toeventual state championWhitefish Bay Dominican.Nennig, whowas a starter as asophomore, returns aftermiss-

ing his junior year with an ACLinjury andwill help fill the voidleftby fourgraduating seniors. The Tigers have a nice mix ofveterans (five seniors, two ju-niors) and newcomers (threesophomores, two freshmen),and if they cangel, they shouldcompete for the CLC crown.

Kohler

2011-12 record: 6-17, 2-14CLC (T-eighth)

Coach: Ken Roeder, fifthyear (31-61)

Returning letter win-ners: Tyler Lewis, 6-3 sr.; Con-nor Hogan, 6-2 sr.; Greg Sura-lik, 6-4 sr.; James Misfeldt, 6-0sr.; Brennan Ladwig, 6-1 jr.; Do-minic Bocchini, 5-9 so.

Other prospects: BrettMueller, 5-11 jr.; Phil Case, 5-7jr.; Eric Bauer, 6-0 jr.; Joe Pel-lowski, 6-1 jr.; Brett Mueller, 5-11 jr.; Calvin Stefanczyk, 6-0 jr.;Cody Gartman, 6-3 jr.; NoahFink, 6-2 so.

Outlook: The Blue Bomb-ers welcome back three start-ers from last year’s squad insenior Lewis and Hogan andsophomore Bocchini. With alarge group of returnees whowere bench players a year ago,Kohler will look to improveupon its 6-17markandwork itsway into the top half of theCLC.

Oostburg

2011-12 record: 20-5, 14-2CLC (second)

Coach: Kevin Bruggink,23rd year, 15th at Oostburg(281-57, 341-104 overall)

Returning letter win-ners: Tyler Hartmann, 6-1 sr.;Josiah VerVelde, 6-9 sr.; KortuJosiah, 5-7 sr.; BenFlipse, 6-3 sr.;

Kiel

2011-12 record: 7-16, 4-10EWC (T-sixth)

Coach: Jamie Arenz, 11thyear (109-114)

Returning letter win-ners: Jordan Meyer, 6-3 sr.;Seth Woods, 6-5 sr.; CalvinWinkel, 6-1 sr.; Terren Driscoll,5-9 jr.; Jacob Winkel, 6-4 jr.

Other prospects: ColeVoelker, 6-1 sr.; Brock Schneid-er, 6-4 jr.; Austin Lieburn, 6-0jr.; Jack Meunier, 5-8 so.; BryceGannigan, 6-0 so.; CarterVoelker, 5-9 fr.

Outlook: The productionof David Esswein (17 ppg) isgone, but JacobWinkel (6-4) isback and was honorable men-tion All-EWC after averaging10 points and seven reboundsa game as a sophomore.Woods (6-5), Schneider (6-4)andMeyer (6-3) give the Raid-ers nice size inside, and if theguards can develop into solidscoring threats, Kiel could beable to post a top-half finish inthe EWC.

New Holstein

2011-12 record: 6-15, 4-10EWC (T-sixth)

Coach: Ken Stephany, sev-enth year (58-89)

Returning letter win-ners: Jason Brandt, 6-1 sr.;Hunter King-Whitney, 6-3 sr.

Other prospects: DevonMittnacht, 6-0 sr.; DerekSteffes, 5-11 sr.; Hunter Petrie,5-10 jr.;Michael Voelker, 6-0 jr.;Andrew Casper, 6-4 jr.; MarkSippel, 6-1 jr.; Parker Lemke,6-1 jr.; Jacob Daun, 5-10 so.;Devon Johnson, 5-10 so.

Outlook: The Huskieshave just two returning letterwinners, so experiencemay be

a factor early in the season. With just two players 6-3 ortaller, New Holstein will haveto rely on strong guard play ifit wants to improve upon itsEWC finish from a year ago.

Plymouth

2011-12 record: 20-6, 12-2EWC (first)

Coach: Jason Duff, thirdyear (34-16)

Returning letter win-ners: Cory Unger, 5-10 sr.;Owen Henriksen, 6-2 sr.; Jor-dan Mueller,6-4 sr.; KevinFriedrichs, 6-6sr.; Kyle Li-sowe, 6-2 sr.;Kollin Neils,6-2 jr.; TomJankowski,6-5 jr.; Eric Ny-gaard, 6-5 jr.;Clay Henning,5-10 jr.; CollinDenzin, 6-0 jr.

Otherprospects:Eric Majerus,6-1 jr.; AndrewStaehling, 6-1jr.; Zac Cain,6-4 so.

Outlook:Returning guards Unger (9ppg),Neils (13.8ppg) andHen-riksen (6.3 ppg) will give Ply-mouth weapons on the out-side while Mueller (6-4), Frie-drichs (6-6), Jankowski (6-5),Nygaard (6-5) and Cain (6-4)give the Panthers plenty ofsize inside. CoachDuff likes histeams length and versatility, though Plymouth may strug-gle from the free-throw line. However with the depth and

De Pere.“Going into that seed

meeting,we’regoing tobegoing up against some bigobstacles,” Duff said.

A key strength for thisPlymouth team is itschemistry — several ofthe players have playedtogether throughout mid-dle school and high school— giving the Panthers acalmness on the court.

“All of us have beenplaying together since wewere young, a lot of us arefrom St. John the Bap-tist,” Unger said. “Chem-istry and relying on eachother (is our strength).”

“It helps that we’vebeen around with eachother since pretty muchkindergarten,” fellowsenior Kevin Friedrichssaid. “It also helps thatweall play football, so we’reconstantly with each oth-er and we’ve felt successwith each other in manysports for years. If some-one needs to be picked upwe’ll be there topick themup.”

“Our camaraderie, weknow what everyone isgoing to be doing on thecourt,” senior JordanMueller added. “We’vebeen playing together forso long.”

But how will this team

handle success?Whatwillhappen if people begin tostart talking about Stateperhaps a bit premature-ly?

“Justwinonegameat atime,” junior guardKollinNeils said. “There’s big-ger and better goals allthe time, but those comelater. Justkeep improvingevery day. Always look toimprove, even in prac-tice.”

“This team hasn’t doneanything,” Duff saidabout his team’s mental-ity. “We’ve accomplishedzero. Last year was lastyear,wehaven’tdoneany-thing. That will continueto be our mantra, whathave we done?”

A positive for Duff isthat many of these play-ers played football, andhave playedwith lofty ex-pectations before.

“It shows that we’veplayed in a big game,”senior Owen Henriksensaid. “You still have tohave nerves, you’re ner-vous before the big game.Butwe’vehad thatexperi-ence.”

“They have a desire tobe great,” Duff said.“Now whether we’ll begreat or not, that’s to bedetermined. We talkabout that a lot, not justsettling for mediocrity, and for what some peoplemight say that is your lim-it. We want to pushthrough that.”

Patrick Mauer, 6-0 sr.; AndrewTelschow, 6-2 jr.; Parker Gabri-else,6-1jr.; JakeHurlbutt,6-2 jr.

Other prospects: TylerChaloupka, 5-9 jr.; Kyle Swart,6-6 jr.; Justin Molter, 6-5 jr.;Josh Smies, 5-11 jr.; Joe Smies,5-11 jr.; LucasMeerdink, 5-9 so.

Outlook: The FlyingDutchmen lost a four-yearstarter in Alex Stecker and athree-year starter in Brad Prin-sen from a team that went20-5 a year ago. But Oostburgdoes return guard Tyler Hart-mann (6-1) and forward JosiahVerVelde (6-9), who can causeheadaches for opponents in-side, alongwith six other play-ers. Oneof the favorites towinthe CLC, the Dutch have aver-aged nearly 20 wins a seasonfor the last 10 years (19.9).

Ozaukee

2011-12 record:16-10, 10-6CLC (fourth)

Coach: Isaiah Ketterha-gen, 10th year (87-111)

Returning letter win-ners: Tyler Bares, 6-0 sr.; AlexDieringer, 6-1 sr.; StephenStreet, 6-6 sr.; Colton Susen, 5-10 sr.; Andy Richter, 6-3 jr.;Owen Miller, 6-0 so.

Other prospects: HunterRadtke, 6-0 so.; Tony Street, 6-1so.

Outlook: With just eightplayers on the roster, CoachKetterhagen will look for pro-duction out of his six returning

letter winners, including fourseniors. Stephen Street (6-6) isback after averaging 8.2points, 7.5 rebounds, 3 steals,2.2 blocks and 3.7 assists agame last year. Outside ofStreet, however, nooneon theroster is over 6-3. If the War-riors can develop consistentscoring, they lost the school’sall-time scoring leader in EricHartnett to graduation, theycould contend for a high finishin the CLC.

Random Lake

2011-12 record: 15-8, 9-7CLC (fifth)

Coach: SteveMurphy, fifthyear at Random (35-54, 214-183 overall)

Returning letter win-ners: Alex Rathke, 6-2 sr.; Dy-lan Svoem, 5-11 sr.; Andy Fech-ter, 6-3 jr.; Nic Horning, 6-0 so.;Logan Martin, 5-10 so.; AaronRathke, 6-2 so.

Other prospects: Andrew

Ross, 5-11 sr.; Justin Fay, 5-6 sr.;Jesse Luotio, 6-4 jr.; AndrewBruder, 6-1 jr.; Evan DeBroux,6-4 fr.

Outlook: The Rams lostquite a bit of production fromgraduated seniors EvanRathke (16.3 ppg), JustinLunde (14.3 ppg) and LoganArmstrong (10.3 ppg) from ateam that won 15 games andfinished in the middle of theCLC. Random may be youngwith three sophomores andone freshman, but all threesophomoreswere on varsity asfreshmen, so they return withsome experience. If this groupcan develop chemistry withthe upperclassmen, the Ramscould have another successfulCLC campaign.

Sheb. Christian

2011-12 record: 4-19, 2-14CLC (T-eighth)

Coach: Brett Flipse, 16thyear (211-151)

Returning letter win-ners: Andy Koerber, 6-4 sr.;Kyle Stecker, sr.; Garret Klom-penhouwer, 6-0 sr.; BJ Braaks-ma, 5-5 sr.; Patrick Bolden, 5-9sr.; Bradyn Otte, 5-5 jr.; JoshStecker, 6-0 jr.; Caleb Kelley, 5-10 so.

Other prospects: GrahamVerVelde, 6-2 so.

Outlook: The Eagles pos-sess someyoungplaymakers injunior Josh Stecker (13.8 ppg)and sophomore Caleb Kelley(8.6ppg).Witheight returningplayers, Christian will have de-centexperienceonce it hits theCLC circuit. If some of theyounger players that were on

varsity last year can take a bigstep forward, the Eagles havethe firepower to make somenoise in the CLC.

Sheb. Lutheran

2011-12 record: 25-4, 15-1CLC (first)

Coach: Nick Verhagen,first year (0-0)

Returning letter win-ners: Ben Leibham, 6-4 sr.; PhilLeibham, 6-0 jr.; Tyler Zastrow,5-9 jr.; Jeff Hess, 5-11 jr.; JacobJurss, 5-11 so.

Other prospects: RyanScheele, 6-3 jr.; Taylor Zastrow,6-0 jr.; Nathan Hasenstein, 5-11jr.; Tyler Maxon, 5-11 jr.; JacobAmes, 6-3 jr.; Eric Puksich, 5-10jr.; Justin Welsch, 5-11 jr.

Outlook: The defendingDivision 5 state champion Cru-saderswill have to replace SamDekker, one of the greatestarea players of all-time, andcoach Todd Dekker, who wason the sidelines for 17 years atLutheran. Despite a roster thatfeatures just one senior, ju-niors Phil Leibham, Tyler Zas-trow, Hess and sophomoreJurss saw extensive action dur-ing Lutheran’s run to State ayear ago. CoachVerhagenwasanassistanton last year’s team, allowing for familiarity withthe players despite this beinghis first season at the helm. Ifthe Crusaders can find enoughproduction to being to replaceSam Dekker, they should staynear the top of the CLC.

athleticism on the roster, thePanthers shouldn’t havemuchtrouble contending for a sec-ond-straight EWC title.

Sheboygan Falls

2011-12 record: 19-5, 11-3EWC (second)

Coach: Jake Frohling, firstyear (0-0)

Returning letter win-ners: Jacob Tenpas, 6-2 sr.;Matt Wilke, 6-1 jr.

Other prospects: JakeHucke, 5-9 sr.; Will Meyer, 6-1sr.; Connor Clark, 6-1 sr.; Jor-rele Rivera, 6-4 sr.; Ryan Halv-erson, 5-11 sr.; SeanMcKinster,5-11 sr.; Riley Schueffner, 5-11sr.; NateHeili, 6-4 jr.;MikeRae-der, 6-0 jr.; BradyMauer, 6-0 jr.;Nick Peterson, 5-11 jr.; JacobMusil, 5-5 jr.

Outlook: The loss of ZachVan Engen (18.7 points, 5.3 re-bounds per game) and BobbyMusil (12.3 points, 2.3 re-bounds) to graduation will betough to replace for the Fal-cons. Returning starters Ten-pas andWilke give Falls a solid1-2 punch, but developingthird- and fourth-scoring op-tions from a batch of playerslight on varsity experiencewillbe key if the Falcons want tofinish in the top-half of theEWC again.
