Science Outreach Programs

A number of STARS programs have been developedto enrich the science curriculum without requiringthe need to travel to the UT Southwestern campus.Contact us if you are interested in taking advantageof any free program described below.

Science Fair Judges

Faculty, staff and students are recruited to judgelocal science fairs. No more than 2 judges can beprovided for any single school event.

Science Ambassadors

Volunteers travel to areaschools to speak on varioustopics related to biomedicalresearch, disease, or careers.

Student Mentoring Program

UT Southwestern faculty act as mentors to adviseand to direct students, via phone or email, workingon research projects.

Summer Research Program for Teachers

This eight-week program is designed to give middleand high school teachers from North Texas anopportunity to work side-by-side with a faculty host

in a research laboratory.SRP participants typicallyperform independent re-search projects in collabo-ration with their mentors. This is a great opportunityto learn the latest inresearch techniques frominternationally renowned

scientists, including those members of the NationalAcademy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine, andother distinguished faculty. Teachers use their newfound knowledge and skills to develop classroomactivities that relate to their areas of research. Theyalso create a poster and present their research topeers and staff on campus.

SRP for Teachers(stipend and funds for classroom supplies)

• Rekindle your interest in science

• Learn new techniques and skills

• Develop activities that relate your research experience to the classroom

• Open to any teacher in the state of Texas

Virtual Instruments

As a teacher are you frustrated with a lack ofscientific equipment? Are half your microscopesbroken or out for repair? Would you like to use aspectrophotometer, but even a cheap one is way outof your budget?

We have the answer! We havedeveloped Virtual Instru-ments, the Virtual Microscopeand the Virtual Spectropho-tometer. These are computerprograms that simulate scien-tific instruments. Students canmanipulate dials, knobs, etc.

The download or CD comes with a Teachers Manual,QuickStart Guide, and Lesson Plans.

The Virtual Microscope comes with pre-loaded slides(normal vs. diseased tissue, plant mitosis, etc).Students can learn about the parts of the microscopewith a click of a button or calculate the number ofcells in a specific mitoticcell cycle. With the at-tached camera studentscan even save or print a mi-crograph of what they seein the scope and send it tothe teacher for comment.

The Virtual Spectropho-tometer comes with virtual solutions, or you canmake your own (instructions are included). Your stu-dents can determine the absorbance of and calculateconcentrations of solutes with Beer’s Law. Some ofthe samples provided even change over time as theyare oxidized; students can observe this and plot therate of oxidation.

The software runs on the PC or on Macintoshes withWindows emulation. It is available (at no charge toteachers) on a CD (request one from the STARSoffice) and on a website for download athttps://ais.swmed.edu/starslab.
