AS BARRENJOEY HIGH SCHOOL APPROACHES ITS HALF-CENTURY
MILESTONE, WE HAVE $500,000 WORTH OF REASONS TO BE EXCITED...
For several generations of Northern Beaches residents, Barrenjoey has been a highly regarded
comprehensive public high school, an integral part of our unique community and a stimulating
learning environment. The School has discovered, nurtured and celebrated the artistic and
creative brilliance of our youth. From the popular Music Room to the MADD nights, the wider
community has experienced high quality art exhibits, drama and musical performances by our
students.
A major project to create a new, more intimate performance space that will benefit the whole
community is in its final stages of development. The Barrenjoey Community Performance
Space, designed by local architect and parent, Richard Cole, will provide a purpose built
amphitheatre that supports the vision of the school leadership to better showcase the art, music
and drama talents of our students and members of the wider public.
A P&C Sub-committee has been fundraising to expand on the growing reputation of Barrenjoey
High School as an exceptional place of learning and creativity for the past four years. Last week
we received wonderful news to help provide a valuable community facility dedicated to the arts
where performance and creativity can flourish.
The State Government announced they will contribute $500,000 towards finalising the plans and
complete Phase 1 of the project. Pittwater State MP and Education Minister Rob Stokes noted
“Barrenjoey HS has an outstanding reputation in the performing arts and this project will help
enable this talent to be encouraged and shared.”
Collectively the money form the State Government, successful grant submissions, school
sources and other contributions takes the tally raised to just over $800,000.
It is estimated that the entire project (both Phases 1 and 2) will cost around $1.2m, so we’re
getting close now. It’s not too late to still support this important project which will build on other
milestones in Barrenjoey’s growth, including construction of the school hall, the Art Shed and Art
Gallery, new technology in classrooms, new hospitality kitchens and BBQ area, resurfaced
basketball courts and improved landscaping.
Barrenjoey’s academic programs achieve high educational outcomes through the use of the
“Senior Study” library facility, advanced HSC course offerings and tutoring programs. HSC results
have significantly improved, particularly over the last decade, with students achieving at the
highest levels.

Phase 1 Phase 2
On Monday 11th September, Year 4 students from Bilgola Plateau Public School, Newport Public
School and The Montessori School came to Barrenjoey to experience a day at High School. The weather was perfect and the kids could not keep the smile off their faces! They participated in
Science, Food Tech, Engineering and French.
There was lots of laughter and even some screams from the Science Lab!
The Kids absolutely loved Science counting down to a little explosion. They also made rockets in
Engineering then went outside to watch them take off!
They also became Master Chefs in the kitchens and made yummy thumb print freckle cookies.
Thank you to all the Staff who assisted and to the students who mentored on the day and made the experience a memorable one for all of Year 4 students who attended.

DOROTHEA MACKELLAR POETRY AWARDS – CONGRATULATIONS
Jacinta Rogers Highly Commended
Congratulations to Year 9 student Jacinta Rogers who submitted a poem titled
“Winter Tides” in the 2017 Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards in June this year.
Jacinta’s Poem was chosen as one of nine “Highly Commended” by the judges.
Well done Jacinta, they received over 1,400 entries in the Junior Secondary
Category. Enjoy reading Jacinta’s poem once again.
Winter Tides by Jacinta Rogers
Body shudders from icy mist
Teeth chatter as white clouds are exhaled
Feet sprint across blades of emerald and grains of broken shells
Hands grip the rails of fiberglass
Board flies over frothy whitewash
Torso lands on wax
Arms dig in and stretch back pulling cold morning milk
Eyes red glassed over by the bitter salt spray
Cheeks pierced by shattered glass
Flesh frozen by the winter tides
The sun catches fire on the horizon
Dancing on waves of molten gold
Painting lines on a blank canvas
Ripping into a fresh silk wall
Carving sculptures from melted ice
Sheltering from inside the green room
Arms dig in and pull back the cold afternoon milk
Feet grip wax
Hands grip rails
Tucked under a sheet of glass
Heading towards the white light
Spat out from the barrel
Into the sun’s last strike
CONGRATULATIONS TO FORMER STUDENT CADE CUST
Former Barrenjoey student Cade Cust who
graduated last year has been selected on the
interchange bench for the Sea Eagles to take on
the Cronulla Sharks in week Two of the Holden

Good luck Cade and Go Manly!
WARRINGAH ZONE SURFING TITLES
In the Open Girls Division, Cedar Leigh-Jones was clinical in dismantling her
opposition to dominate and win the Girls Final, with Tiya Collins placing 3rd
and Halina Morley 4th. Arch Whiteman was involved in a very tight 3-way
final heat which saw the lead change 4 times before the final siren. He was
1st at heats end, with his brother Van Whiteman finishing 3rd. In the Open
Boys division, Darcy Crump was unlucky with wave selection placing 3rd.
Congratulations to all competitors and a big thankyou to parents and staff for
your continued support of school surfing.

Last Thursday was the running of the Annual Warringah Zone Surfing Titles at Avalon Beach.
In clean, 3-4ft conditions the best surfers from the 6 local high schools took to the water to stake their claim
for the coveted Warringah Zone title.

Cedar then backed up and
competed at the Wahu Surfer

at Collaroy Beach.
She again proved her
dominance coming 1st in the
Under 14 Girls Division with
Astrid Osborn coming in 3rd
place.
In the boys Under 14 division
Luke Dujic came 2nd.
Well done to all the
Barrenjoey Groms!
APP UPDATE
HAVE YOU CHANGED THE APP ICON from
BARRENJOEY HIGH SCHOOL to SCHOOL STREAM?
Apple has recently changed its guidelines on Branded Apps. This is
due to the overwhelming number of Apps in the App Store (Billions to
be exact).
This means that instead of seeing the Barrenjoey High School Logo on
your phone screen, you will see the School Stream Logo. Once you
go into that the Barrenjoey High School Logo will appear and it will be
business as usual. BUT YOU MUST RE-DOWNLOAD IT FIRST! We
are therefore asking you to please download the School Stream App.
Step 1
Step 2
This unfortunately is out of our hands.
Thank you for your understanding.
UPLOAD SCHOOL STREAM via App/Play Store
THEN follow the links to BARRENJOEY HIGH
SCHOOL.
FINAL
MIGRATION
HAPPENING
TODAY!
This is the symbol that you will see on your phone from
now on. Once School Stream is installed you will then
type in Barrenjoey High School and the App is ready to
go. You can now delete the old Barrenjoey High
School App (if you had it before) and just use the
School Stream App from now on. Thank you.

If you feel there are any discrepancies please contact Felicity Hance on 9918 8811.
We have recently disabled the Create Message button in the Parent Portal for parents to contact
teachers.
The reason is that this message does not go directly to the teacher’s email; instead it sits in an
area of the portal that is rarely visited by the teachers.
We believe that it is more expedient for parents to contact teachers through the
[email protected] email – which is attended every day – and that way we can
ensure that the teacher will receive the email in their normal email account.
Thank you for your understanding.

COMMUNICATION WITH TEACHERS
TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY 2017
PARENT, STUDENT AND TEACHER SURVEY
This Term, Barrenjoey is taking part in the Tell Them From Me Student Survey. The survey will
provide us with valuable feedback on what our students, parents and teachers think about school
life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with students.
Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them
improve. The survey is completed on-line and is run by an independent research company, The
Learning Bar, which specialises in school-based surveys.
Students will be asked a series of questions, however there is also a Parent Survey. The survey
asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student
wellbeing and engagement.
Running this survey will help Barrenjoey understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their
child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff,
activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school’s support of learning and
behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

YEAR 10 END-OF-COURSE EXAM TUTORIALS
TERM 4, 2017 – Weeks 1 to 4
Year 10 students at Barrenjoey High School this year will be offered extra tuition, at very little cost, to further
advance their studies in preparation for their Year 10 course exams.
The tutorials will assist students in improving their Year 10 results and better prepare them for their studies
in Year 11. In addition they will also be important for students who leave school before undertaking their
HSC as Year 10 exam results will form part of their Record of School Achievement.
Accordingly, small groups of students with similar skill levels in English, Mathematics and Science are
offered. Tutors are either current teachers, recently retired or ex Barrenjoey High School students who
received a Band 6 and are currently studying at university in the subject. All tutors are experienced and
dedicated.
The hourly tutorials will be held in A Block from 4pm onwards once a week for four weeks.
The program provides:
• Specific focus on revision of difficult course concepts
• Preparation of examination techniques
• Consolidation and/or extension of quality responses
• Relevant skills for senior subjects.
Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity – it will help to:
1. Increase students’ knowledge and skills needed for the end-of-Year 10 examination
