Principal Communication

Implementation of Full-Time Return to School

Barrenjoey High School

Returning Monday 25th May

To the Barrenjoey Learning Community

As you already know we have been operating a phased return of students since Monday

11th May. This included two weeks of students attending one day per week and Year 12 students

returning this week, for 4 full days. While COVID-19 has presented many challenges, I am very

proud of the professional manner in which Barrenjoey staff, both teaching and support, managed

the situation. Teachers adjusted their curriculum overnight and prepared on-line lessons to enable

learning continuity, while support staff assisted behind the scenes to provide parental

communication and maintain both welfare and learning support. For this I would like to publicly

thank all the staff at Barrenjoey for an amazing job.

Throughout this time it has been quite difficult to track all the changes and information that was

conveyed from numerous sources and it has been almost impossible to predict the timeline of

when schooling would change DET attendance phases or return full-time. You, the parents and

caregivers of our students, have encouraged us throughout, despite the uncertain messaging, by

believing in the efforts and abilities of our staff and I know that they have appreciated your

support.

As you have undoubtedly heard the State Government made the decision to return all NSW

students to school from Monday 25th May. All Barrenjoey students will return to full-time from

next Monday and will follow their regular timetables. This will also have some challenges,

however, it will be great to see all the smiling student faces back at Barrenjoey and engaged in

their learning. As a learning community we will have to do some things differently, some we’ll be

able to predict and plan for and others that may surprise us and require further planning.

Whatever happens, I feel confident that Barrenjoey can manage the next six weeks of Term Two

well.

Below are some of the key features of a full-time return to school next week that we will beworking towards so that we can all remain safe and secure while learning.

Expectations to ensure health and safety of all students and staff

Safety remains a priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students will be expected to behave in

a responsible way, which recognises the importance of protecting the health of themselves, their

peers and staff. The Health Department states that teachers and school staff are at a greater

risk than students in contracting COVID-19 and its effects, so we ask students to take these

points extremely seriously.

Students will be expected to:

Page 3: BARRENJOEY HIGH SCHOOL€¦ · The Canteen will resume normal operations from Monday 25th May. ... Magnus Lorentz Owen MacGregor Hugh Mashman Sienna McDonald Nina McGuffog Abbey Mitchell

● Stay home when unwell. Parents must not send students to school if they are feeling

unwell. If a student is unwell during the school day, they will not be able to remain in the clinic.

Parents will be expected to promptly collect unwell students from school. (It would be

appreciated if as an additional precaution, students’ temperatures are checked before leaving

for school)

● Assist in keeping classroom desks and school equipment clean as directed by the teacher

● Engage in regular handwashing, especially before eating during breaks

● Not share drinks or food – bring a water bottle as bubblers will remain out of action and

only the bottle refill station will operate

● Remain 1.5 m apart from school staff.

● Move around the blocks in the direction as suggested by ‘flow arrows’. Students and staff

will access the first floors via one stairwell and return to the ground floor by another.

● Bring all their own equipment including pens, calculators, BYOD with charger, glue and

anything else needed as there will be NO sharing amongst students or provision of equipment

by staff

● Cough or sneeze into their elbows if necessary to avoid spreading infection. Avoid touching

their face.

● Use soap, sanitisers and other health items in a responsible manner – ideally bring own

sanitiser. However, each classroom has a supply of hand sanitiser as well as alcohol wipes and

access to extra cleaning throughout the day with special attention to cleaning of desks,

doorknobs, bathrooms and other surfaces.

● Participate safely if they elect to participate in ball games during break times by washing

hands and sanitising afterwards

● Depart school at the end of the day in a staggered manner with students leaving A and C

Blocks at 3.05pm and B and D Blocks at 3.10pm.

Parents are welcome to visit the Front Office if required but please do not

seek access to other parts of the school.

TRANSPORT

School buses will be running at normal times before and after school.

With Period 5 finishing five minutes early for some students each day a staff supervision roster will be implemented to assist with a safe and efficient egress from the school.

UNIFORM

Students are expected to wear their full school uniform on the days they attend.

In the colder weather make sure you purchase items to keep you warm that are

part of the uniform.

The Uniform Store is open for regular trading hours.

CANTEEN

The Canteen will resume normal operations from Monday 25th May.

• To purchase food it will need to be ordered BEFORE 9.30am using

Flexischools https://www.flexischools.com.au/

• Over the counter purchases will be limited to some drinks and snacks and other non-

perishable items – but it will be CASHLESS so students will need an eftpos card for payment

• There will be social distancing in the canteen at all times and extra teachers will be on duty to

supervise the students.

• Therefore, you are encouraged to use Flexischools to assist with choice, payment and social distancing. Alternatively bring your own lunch and snacks.

WEDNESDAY SPORT

Wednesday afternoon sport will be possible yet very challenging as we have very limited

opportunities beyond the school gates with the ratio of staff to students being very tight. We

have had to make a number of decisions for the remainder of this term.

Page 5: BARRENJOEY HIGH SCHOOL€¦ · The Canteen will resume normal operations from Monday 25th May. ... Magnus Lorentz Owen MacGregor Hugh Mashman Sienna McDonald Nina McGuffog Abbey Mitchell

• Years 8 and 9 students will select a sport with Mr Flood after Lunch 2 on Wednesday 27

May, (separate information to follow).

• Options will include the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (Year 9) Award as well as Concert

Band rehearsal, (specific information will follow regarding these activities).

• Year 10 students will meet Mr Brown and Ms James to discuss the subject selection

process for 2021 after Lunch 2 on Wednesday 27 May. They will be dismissed early

following this meeting.

• Years 8 and 9 will continue with Wednesday sport for the remainder of Term 2.

• Year 10 will NOT be required to attend sport (from Wednesday 3 June until end of Term 2)

and will be permitted to leave school early at Lunch 2 with the exception of a scheduled

interview with senior staff for 2021 subject selection.

Please note: if parents do not wish their child to leave after Lunch 2 on Wednesday afternoon

please inform Ms James and an alternative arrangement will be made)

Until Monday the 25th May

It has been eight weeks since ‘Learning from Home’ commenced so next Monday will be a

special day as we celebrate all students returning.

On behalf of all the staff I am looking forward to it! Ian Bowsher

Macquarie University online emotional support for students

“We’ve Got This Covered!”

Following a professional development session that the PCS had last term with

Professor Jennie Hudson, the team at Macquarie University have built a specific website to help

Australian schools and families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their website provides support

and information that might prevent the development or exacerbation of anxiety and depression

in students for both primary and secondary schools. The online resource that is suitable for

teachers and parents is the first stage of a website that will hopefully contain more material

specifically for students in a few weeks time.

The PCS is amongst the first people to see it, given our involvement and contribution to theideas:

As you are probably aware, the Peninsula

Community of Schools (PCS) has developed a

great relationship with Macquarie University,

especially their Centre for Emotional Health. This

partnership is particularly evident in our annualemotional health survey.

http://www.mq.edu.au/covid-19-weve-got-this-covered!

I think any parent or teacher who has some concerns for their children regarding the anxiety that may surround the virus and returning to school will find this website very useful.

YEAR 11… SEMESTER ONE REPORT DISTRIBUTION

Year 11 students are receiving their school

reports this week.

While the usual Parent/Teacher/Student

Night has been cancelled as has the

presentation to all Year 11 regarding their

reports, conducting interviews has not.

Mr Moylan will schedule interviews with all

Year 11 students over the next few weeks

so that he can monitor progress as well as

set goals for the remainder of the

Preliminary HSC year.

The Semester One Reports for the 120 Year 11 students is being distributed this week

This Report…

Where is your path heading?

Due to adjustments that were made to the Year 11 Assessment Schedule, grades could not be

allocated to all subjects. Therefore Gold and Silver Awards will not be distributed to students at

the time they receive their Semester One Report. However, once all Year 11 Semester One

assessments have been completed we will issue these awards then to recognise academicexcellence.

Considering how challenging the educational landscape has been of late we should be very

proud of our students who have adjusted well to online learning and developed more

independence in dealing with the obstacles. Many students’ report comments acknowledge this

in summarising their learning so far in the senior school.

The individual results were very pleasing with:

49 students received a REC (Respect, Effort, Challenge) award by having 100% of their profile as Always or Usually participating in their learning – that’s approximately 41%!

As you know we acknowledge the contribution that students make to their own learning is

paramount to the overall success of their education. In recognition of students’ efforts the 49

REC Award recipients in Year 11 are recognised below. Excellent result Year 11 – well done!

Have a great week everyone... Ian Bowsher

The aim of this checklist is to ensure consistency of judgements for

reports. This is significant as the personal profile section of the report

links to REC awards. As these statements are new this year, it is

pertinent that we have a shared idea of the expected behaviours upon

which we are making these judgements.

REC Report Consistency Checklist

When selecting the appropriate outcome, please remember that:

• Always means that a student

demonstrates this 100% of the time

• Usually means that a student

demonstrates this consistently, but

has had to be reminded of these

expectations occasionally.

• Sometimes means that a student is

able to demonstrate the expected

behaviours approximately half the

time

• Rarely means that the student almost

never demonstrates the expected

behavior.

• Never will be removed from ourreport options from Semester 1 2020.

LEARNING HUB – LOWDOWN

Renovations continue in the Learning Hub. The walls are being painted and the carpet has

come up. Year 11 and 12 can look forward to an extended Senior Study space, with walls

knocked down to create a large open area. Phase 1 is focusing on the Senior Study and non-

fiction area, with Phase 2 moving to the other side where our fiction books live. While the Senior

Study gets a make over, Year 11 and 12 are spending study periods in the hall with plenty of

room to spread out but still with teacher supervision.

Unfortunately we have had to cover the books for protection and at the moment can’t allow

students in, so we are closed before and after school as well as during Lunch 1 and 2. Please

continue to return your books though, there is a tub outside the Hub. This will also affect

students who use the printer. Our large, communal printer is out of action at the moment so

students will need to make alternative arrangements if they need to print any work.

Watch this space for a progress update next week…and keep reading our eBooks!!

YEAR 9 CAMP CANCELLATION

AND

BRONZE DUKE OF EDINBURGH PROGRAM

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This year we were hoping to do things differently with our Year 9 Camp, however, unfortunately

Covid-19 has thwarted our attempts to run the Camp at all.

New South Wales Sport and Recreation cancelled our original camp date (June 3 – 6) and were

unable to provide us with an alternative date that fitted in with our school calendar.

Fortunately, we will still be able to run the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Program for all interested

students. Due to Covid-19, the Duke of Edinburgh Body has decided that participating students

will only be required to complete ONE walk this year to qualify. Therefore, participants in the

program will attend an overnight test walk in Week 3 of Term 4 (October 29th and 30th).

We would like to offer all parents and caregivers three options:

1. If you have already paid a deposit for the Year 9 Camp you can transfer this deposit

as part payment for a place for your child in the Duke of Edinburgh Program

2. Alternatively you can transfer deposit payment towards existing or future school

fees.

3. Or you can receive a refund

Please contact Ms Felicity Hance in the School Treasury regarding the above options.

Mr Richard Ilsley will provide additional information in regards to the Duke of Edinburgh

program (see attached).

As a frequent participant in the walking aspect of the Duke of Edinburgh, I most wholeheartedly

encourage my wonderful year group to embrace this opportunity and participate in this highly

regarded and extremely rewarding program. Graduating in Year 12 with a Gold Duke of

Edinburgh certificate is a truly wonderful experience.

Kindest Regards,

Peta ClarkYear 9 Advisor

Dear Parent & Participant,

The Bronze Award is open to students in year 9 and is definitely going ahead.

1. Expedition: 1 this year – due to COVID-19 it will be the 29th - 30th of October. Participants will partake

in their preparation and training in the final 5 weeks of Term 2 during sport on Wednesday afternoons.

2. Skills: 1 hour / week over a 3 month period, a practical, cultural or social activity must be undertaken at

least once per week leading to a deeper knowledge of the subject and the attainment of a reasonable

degree of skill, e.g. playing a musical instrument.

3. Physical Recreation: Weekly participation in one physical activity for a minimum of 3 months 1 hour /

week resulting in some improvement in that activity.

4. Service: Voluntary community service 1 hour/week over 3 months.

One of the 3 sections of skills/sport/ service needs to be a ‘major’ and be done for 6 months. This is entirely

up to the participant as to which one.

Due to the introduction of the Online Record Book there is now a membership fee at each level of the

award. The cost of continuing with the Bronze Award is $150. This covers membership, supply of the

Online Record Book and insurance whenever the student is involved in Duke of Edinburgh activities.

The cost of the expedition is yet to be determined, as it is based on numbers and activity chosen it is

expected that their cost will be $250 to $350. This includes supervision, transport, major equipment (tent,

pack, rainwear, cooking gear) and instruction from qualified guides.

Please print and sign the below slip and return it to the school Treasurer’s Office. Or you can scan it and

email it to myself. The form and payment are due by Wednesday 27th May.

Portrait of Moe by Year 12 Student Sam James

ARTIST OF THE WEEK

Ben Ritchie

Year 11 Visual Arts

has painted his grandfather's portrait

through expressive mark making. This

wonderful painting captures both

likeness and character of his sitter.

Well done Ben!

She asked Sam if he could draw her

puppy Moe after the HSC. During

isolation Sam decided to use the extra

time to do the drawing of little Moe and

well the result is incredible.

Well done Sam!

WHAT’S A BUZZ IN C BLOCK

These native bees are a stingless variety of bee that are about 3mm long and spend their day

foraging for nectar, resin, pollen and water.

The hive at the back, in natural timber colour, is an established hive of Mr Ilsley's and contains

around 4000 of the bees, it is attached to an empty observation hive at the front, by means of a

fixed tube. As the colony grows it should begin to establish a second sister hive in the new

white box at the front until the duplication is complete. This progress will be able to be viewed

by the students during science lessons throughout the year. The bees produce a thin and very

sweet honey, however in very small amounts, only about 1kg per year, compared to a European

bee hive that can produce upwards of 50kg of honey!

It is not likely that we will be seeing much of the bees in the next few months as they only come

out of the hive to forage if the temperature is above 18 degrees.

Students are encouraged to give the bees their space and allow them to go about their

business. More information can be found at aussiebee.com.au

Eagle eyed students may have noticed some new,

strange boxes that have been added to the garden

of C block.

The new additions represent a colony of Australian

Native Bees, Tertragonula Carbonaria.
