Editor:

I’m Dennis and as an agent for the Works I have been distributing the Works local to your homes for many years, so it is likely that you may have seen me on my rounds.

I am now looking to submit some interesting articles, which I hope, will complement our already popular magazine.

For future issues I will be looking for local topics, your opinions (good or bad!), stories & people of interest so any suggestions would be most welcomed- please email [email protected].

As a community magazine we are always trying to extend our links with local businesses and believe that our low budget advertising offers could be the answer to promoting a company’s business during the current “credit crunch” climate.

Supporting Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing People and their Families

GDA Fundraising Fete Saturday 11th June 2011

Enjoy a whole host of activities and stalls, and at the same time help raise funds for

Gloucestershire Deaf Association. A GDA Fundraising Fete is to be held on Saturday 11th

June 2011, 11am to 3.30pm, at Colin Road, in Barnwood, Gloucester.

This year has a pirates and princesses theme for

children, with a fancy dress competition and also an art

competition. Entries for the art competition can be sent

in advance, as a selection of the best will be used to

adorn the Gloucestershire Deaf Community Centre Hall

on the day of the event. (Please remember to put your

full name, age, address and contact details on the

back.)

Also in keeping with the pirates theme, there will be a

huge Treasure Island bouncy castle, and coconut shy,

along with a host of other attractions such as crazy golf, skittles, face painting and information and craft stalls.

However GDA’s Fundraising Fete is by no means an event just for families with children. Many people who enjoy the

services and social activities at Gloucestershire Deaf Association are older, and as always we make a great effort to

ensure this event is as active or as relaxing as you want it to be. It’s an excellent opportunity to find out more what

the GDA has to offer deaf and hard of hearing people in Gloucestershire, from listening-aid equipment to becoming a

volunteer for the charity.

Gloucestershire Deaf Association operations manager Jenny Hopkins said: ‘Our annual Fete is always the big

fundraising event for us in the year, so please do come along and support us.’ One in 800 babies are born

profoundly deaf every year, and at the same time one in three people over 60 will have some level of acquired

hearing loss. GDA is the charity that offers frontline services to people with hearing loss and at this time of huge

cutbacks in funding, every bit of money helps. The Fundraising Fete is a way of enjoying a fun afternoon and giving

support at the same time”.

Money raised will go towards the continuing refurbishment of the community centre for deaf people, which was

started during summer 2010 and has so far seen a new kitchen installed, a number of rooms refurbished, including

the main hall, and a new audio visual system put in. The work has enhanced the facilities for all the groups that use

the centre.

Entrance to the Fundraising Fete is free or 50p if that includes taking part in a fun Treasure Hunt (suitable for adults

and children).

DAVE’S TOP TIPS

Leaking gutters

A common problem people are faced with after a heavy downpour of rain is that they find that their guttering starts to leak. This can simply just be a case of the gutter overflowing due to a build up of debris such as moss getting trapped, usually in the downpipe on a bend. Of course an easy fix is just to get it cleaned out.

Another cause can be where the seals on a union (joint) have perished over the years and this is usually indicated by a constant dripping from the joint long after the rain has stopped. Many people may be tempted to try and seal the joint with a silicone sealant but this is rarely a long term fix. Also this makes a replacement at a later date more difficult as the old cured sealant must be removed from the guttering.

The only real answer is to replace the offending union along with new seals that come with them. Many brands of guttering joints etc are of a fairly standard size but not all, so you may be lucky with just unclipping the joint and unscrewing the unit from the fascia. Replacement is the reverse procedure, you will however need a head for heights and good sturdy ladders, if you have neither then it may be best to leave it to a tradesman to give you a proper repair.

Dave Stevens.

Barnwood Primary School

As another school year draws to a close the Pupils and Staff at Barnwood are eagerly working through a programme of activities, which I am sure will leave everyone ready for a well-earned Summer break.

Activi ty Week

The programme started at the end of May with the School taking part in the Gloucester School Partnership Concert held annually in the Town Hall which was closely followed by the School Activity Week. Using the Theme “Under the Sea” Both Staff and Pupils were involved in projects and actions based on this aquatic topic.

The climax of the week was, appropriately a visit to the Sea Quarium in Birmingham, which was attended by the whole school! This ambitious logistics exercise proved to be a resounding success.

Year 6 – Countdown to Secondary School

As the Year 6 pupils prepare to move on to Secondary school they too are involved in a hectic, but enjoyable period of activity. A visit to the PGL Centre at Osmington Bay, nr Weymouth with Year 5, allowed the children to experience several outdoor activities as individuals and in groups. Climbing, Abseiling and Kayaking are examples of the tasks undertaken, which provided a both taxing and exciting experience for all.

The Annual Sports Days and end of term Disco’s for both Juniors and Infants are booked for July and in keeping with the school’s Christian ethos the school year ends with a Leavers Service at St Lawrence’s Church on the last day of term 21

st July.

Governor - PTA Ini t iat ives

Throughout the year the Governors, supported by the PTA have been actively generating funds for the school. Future events will include: A Smartie fashion show which is planned for July. Car Boot Sales are held, on a monthly basis on Saturday mornings in the school playground. Everyone is welcome to take part so make a note to attend either as a Vendor or Buyer on the 11

TH June or 9

TH July, you will be made most welcome. Car washing is a new

initiative now available. An evening of Summer Fun is being organised for early July, also where both Children and Parents can join in.

New Member of Staf f

A member of staff recently welcomed to the school is Marian Myrosc, the new school nurse who has made an immediate impact by holding monthly drop in sessions for parents. This is proving to be a valuable service for Parents who may have concerns about their children.

Well Done !

Congratulations to the School football team who were successful in winning the Gloucester Inter Schools Trophy for Small Schools. In a closely contested final they managed to beat Hillview school by a score of 2-0.

Finally – For this Year

In closing, let’s wish Head Teacher Anne Davies, All her Staff and Pupils a happy and restful Summer Vacation, and wish the Yr 6 Leavers every success has they prepare for the next stage of their education at Secondary School.

Tristan Lewis, Wills & Probate Solicitor, Tayntons LLP, Tristan Lewis, Wills & Probate Solicitor, Tayntons LLP, Tristan Lewis, Wills & Probate Solicitor, Tayntons LLP, Tristan Lewis, Wills & Probate Solicitor, Tayntons LLP, Gloucester on “Empower your attorneys”Gloucester on “Empower your attorneys”Gloucester on “Empower your attorneys”Gloucester on “Empower your attorneys”

We would all like to have a crystal ball to predict what the future holds but the truth is that none of us can predict firstly how long we will live and secondly what our health will be.

“Power of Attorney” is an expression most of us associate with getting older and needing someone else to deal with matters on our behalf. This is a common misconception.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (“LPA”), like a Will, is a document we should all have regardless of age. There are two types; one which deals with finances and another with personal welfare. The person making the LPA chooses the people they trust to make decisions for them, particularly if they’re unable to do so themselves in the future.

Many people wrongly assume that their family or trusted friends will be able to automatically deal with things for them if they become incapable. Over the years we’ve seen many people who have for example been made second signatory on their mother, father or friends bank account to assist with arrangements to pay their bills etc only to find later on that the bank won’t deal with them if the account holder loses capacity. By then it’s too late to set up an LPA.

There are other everyday scenarios where an LPA could be vital. For example you could be stuck abroad and not able to deal with things at home, you could suffer a temporary illness (perhaps the flu) or a more permanent condition (for example a brain injury). In any of these situations an LPA would allow the people you trust to make the decisions that need to be made on your behalf.

Many people are skeptical about the need for an LPA because they fear that if they make one they’ll immediately lose control of their affairs. That isn’t the case. They’ll continue to be able to make decisions for themselves for as long as they have the capacity to do so. Subject to any restrictions put in the LPA the attorney will also be able to make decisions and it’s worth making the point that one of the principles underlying the law about LPAs is that attorneys should actively encourage the person making the power to make decisions for themselves where ever possible.

With an LPA you have the ability to choose for yourself who you trust to deal with your affairs for you in various situations. Without one you’re relying on that same person or persons applying to the Court of Protection to be made your Deputy if you become incapable. They may not feel able to do that and importantly a Court of Protection application is much more costly than an LPA.

It’s possible to compare an LPA with a type of insurance – you hope you’ll never need it but it’s reassuring to know it’s there.

Elmbridge Junior School

Head teacher Glen Tharia is still enthused by two events recently held at the school: The Royal Wedding Celebrations and the Elmbridge Has Got Talent Show.

An idea for a Royal Wedding Celebration was initially driven by the school PTA, however, the children took over responsibility for organising the decorations and activities for the day which included a very popular “soak the teacher” event. A huge Picnic on the school field rounded off the celebrations, which proved to be a real Community fun day for both children and parents.

The school held it’s own “Elmbridge Has Got Talent” show and even had it’s own Simon Cowell look-a-alike on the Judging panel.

Pupils from all age groups demonstrated their talent and skills when performing a variety of acts whilst competing for the coveted title.

The eventual winner was Charlie Organ, aged 8, who “performed brilliantly”, in showing everyone the art of Street Dancing.

At the end of May the school were in the finals of a Wildlife Quiz, organised by Deputy head Tim Wilton, which involved a team of 4 pupils competing in a University Challenge style knock out competition against schools from all over Gloucestershire. In the final, Elmbridge competed against very strong Longney team in a closely contested match and were only narrowly beaten.

Also, twenty members of the school choir represented the school as part of the annual Gloucester Schools Partnership Concert held at the Town Hall. The Partnership Singers performed 16 songs from Shows, Films and Musicals. The finale was a set based on the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, with the songs created by the Choral leaders and the Singers themselves. This was quite an achievement!

Before the Summer Break there are a number of activities planned which for the children and include:

The temporary construction of a climbing wall, which all the children are invited to try. This activity is being sponsored by Sports Xtra, which is providing the wall, the tuition and the supervision. Each child will be complete a sponsored climb with all funds going directly to the school.

A Gymnastic Competition is being held in the school at the end of June. It is expected that about 8 schools will compete. Glen who is an accomplished gymnast hosted the competition, last year and is hoping that it will become an established event on the school’s calendar.

Finally an update on the School Pond Development, the decking has now been laid with plant life and flora becoming established. The pond will become an important feature in the schools eco environment and will be utilised extensively in the teaching of the Science Curriculum. However, there is a minor problem in the form of a “hump” of earth left over from the initial pond excavation, which does need removing.

Therefore anyone with the resources to assist the school in resolving this issue should contact Glen directly at the school.

Isn’t it encouraging to see that Elmbridge Junior as one of our Community schools, is creating such an artistic and quality environment for our children and their education. I’m sure you will join with me in wishing Glen, his Staff and the Pupils an enjoyable and relaxing Summer vacation.
