YOU FIND OUT WHO YOUR FRIENDSreally are when you decide to run of office.Ask Phil Brock.

He ran for City Council in 2014 and lostby a few hundred votes. He competedagainst Kevin McKeown, Terry O’Day andSue Himmelrich, and Pam O’Connor.O’Connor nudged Brock into fifth place andout of the running thanks to last minutesupport from deep-pocketed developerswho mounted a “do or die” campaign blitz.

This time around, four council incum-bents are vying for their second consecutivefour year terms. Among the challengers isveteran school board member Oscar de laTorre, who desires to move up with thiscouncil bid. Armen Melkonians, founder ofthe slow-growth group Residocracy and co-author of the highly controversial LVMeasure on the November ballot has alsotossed his hat into the council ring.

Three of the four incumbents — Davis,Vazquez and Winterer — have beenendorsed by the City’s most powerful politi-cal entity Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights(SMRR). As a note, six of the seven currentcouncil members have received SMRR’sendorsement which many feel is absolutelyvital for an election victory.

Before an election, there’s a lot of specu-lation about who is going to run and forwhat? This is real serious business because aperson’s choice of office or running matecould mean the difference between winningand losing.

Many local political observers wereexpecting that Terry O’Day wouldn’t run foroffice, this time around. O’Day’s pro-devel-opment voting reputation, along with thoseof Gleam Davis, would cost them both slow-growth and Residocracy votes. Would it beenough to hurt their chances of being elect-ed? Opinions varied.

Renters comprise about two-thirds of thevoters. They represent a large power blockwith their numerical advantage. Renters mostoften follow SMRR’s recommendations andvote for SMRR’s endorsee “team’ especiallywhen casting votes for more minor politicaloffices such as Rent Control Board, wherecandidates are mostly unknown.

Other blocks of voters include LaborUnion supporters and union members, vot-ers who vote for Police and Fire interests andvoters who support more housing — espe-cially low-income housing. There are folkswho support and vote for candidates thatback environmental and conservative posi-tions as well as so called neighborhoodgroups or “resident’ supporters.

In the 2014 City Council race, local civichome town activist and Recreation andParks Commissioner Phil Brock came with-in a few hundred votes of dethroningincumbent, Pam O’Connor. After the elec-tion, Brock maintained an active communi-ty profile – so much so that local politicalfollowers joked that Brock was campaigningfor a 2016 City Council seat.

If all four incumbents were to run forcouncil – Vazquez, O’Connor, Winterer andMcKeown – it would be a tough quartet tobeat. If O’Day or O’Connor were to drop outof the running, it would be more likely thatBrock and/or another high-quality chal-lenger- led team would do well.

So, it was a surprise was that Brock decid-ed suddenly to run for school board. Brock ismuch better known in the community, bet-ter liked and a more skillful politician thanthe three Santa Monica- Malibu UnifiedSchool District Board of Education (SchoolBoard) candidates. He would be a shoo-infor the board.

Brock felt he could not win against fourincumbents because he was not endorsed bySMRR, the unions or special interests. Hereasoned that a seat on SMMUSD Board ofEducation would be easily winnable. Heannounced he wouldn’t run for council butwould run for school board.

It would make sense for Brock to run forschool board. First of all, it’s a much easierrace. School Board candidates. But there wasa problem. Mayor Tony Vazquez’s wife MariaLeon-Vazquez was running for reelection.Normally, three of seven seats on the Boardof Education would be available this year.Incumbents Maria Leon-Vazquez, RalphMechur and newcomer Jon Kean were theonly candidates to file for the three seats. IfBrock were to not seek a seat, and nobodyelse filed to run, the three candidates will beappointed to the board by default.

However, it was not to be and once againcronyism and fate stood in the way of a pro-gressive, common sense governing bodyfrom taking the reins at the SMMUSD.

The horse trading began. My sources tellme the wheeling and dealing between powerbrokers and political cronies on behalf ofMaria Leon-Vazquez was something tobehold. In the end, a deal was struck. Brockwould not run for Board of Education inreturn for an appointment to a two-yearterm on the Arts Commission. Althoughappointments to City Boards and commis-sions are not supposed to be politically driv-en, part of the deal was that Brock wouldreceive support from behind the scenesheavyweight political power players if hedecided to run for elected office in 2018.

I guess that Brock could enter the electionas a write-in candidate this election and stillstay on the arts commission but I have a feel-ing that would really anger a lot of people.Besides, write-in candidates don’t usually dowell in major elections.

With Brock pursuing the arts, we lose thewisdom and common sense he would bringto either City Council or School Board. And,we’re stuck with the same old SMRR crony-ism, social engineering, excessive spendingand less good government than we need ordeserve.

Grim isn’t it?

Dear EarthTalkWhat are “smoke waves” from wildfires

and how can they be hazardous for ourhealth?

Doug JenkinsBig Sandy, TX

Smoke waves are just what they sound like:huge waves of smoke. Perhaps more danger-ous than the fires themselves from which theyradiate, smoke waves can cause health prob-lems for people hundreds of miles around.Forest fire flames licking at homes and neigh-borhoods are always scary, killing dozens ofpeople and causing billions of dollars in prop-erty damage across the U.S. every year. But it’stypically the risk from the smoke waves thatcauses school closures and confines peopleindoors for days or weeks on end while morefrequent and more intense wildfires rage on.

What makes smoke waves so dangerous isthat they carry particulate matter (tiny dustparticles smaller than 2.5 microns) that peo-ple can breathe into their lungs where theycan cause respiratory problems and aggravatepre-existing medical conditions. Forest firesand other forms of combustion are the mainsource of these tiny dust particles—so themore forest fires, the more particulate matterrisk. Asthmatic children are especially sensi-tive to smoke waves; hundreds were hospital-ized in California this summer during one ofthe worst fire seasons on record. Smoke wavesare most severe for those directly under or inthe wave, but pollution can travel for hun-dreds of miles, poisoning the lungs of peoplenowhere near the actual fire.

A recent study of smoke waves across theWestern U.S. by researchers from Harvard andYale universities concluded that climatechanges “will likely cause smoke waves to be

longer, more intense, and more frequent.”They found that between 2004 and 2009,smoke waves affected 57 million Americans—more than 15 percent of the U.S. population. But even more troubling is their projection forthat number to ramp up another 45 percentby mid-century as the planet continues towarm up. That will mean about 13 millionmore kids and seniors will be impacted bysmoke waves compared with today.

As the climate changes and most placesget hotter and drier, forest fires are projectedto increase significantly—and with more firecomes more smoke. Anyone living in fire-prone areas needs to be informed and pre-pared. Sites like AirNow.gov can give currentdata on air quality and warn of any dangersfrom smoke waves or other forms of pollu-tion. If a smoke wave is in your area, stayindoors or wear protective clothing andmasking to avoid inhalation.

Because smoke waves are a direct result ofhuman-caused global warming, the best wayto minimize them is to slow or stop carbonemissions. While slowing or stopping globalwarming is a global effort, individuals needto do their part too. Do what you can tominimize energy use and waste, upgrade tomore efficient cars, appliances, systems, homes and offices, fly and drive less, walkand bike more... But also vote for carbontaxes and other warming mitigation meas-ures and urge your lawmakers to supportsustainability-oriented policy initiatives. Ifyou live in a fire-prone area, you’ll be doingyourself and your loved ones a favor.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

cer patients were diagnosed between 1976and 2012.

That’s according to a report that wasrecently released by the Los Angeles CancerSurveillance Program, a project of the USCNorris Comprehensive Cancer Center andthe university’s Keck School of Medicine.

The incidence of lung cancer has “sub-stantially declined” since the mid-1990s,according to the report, a trend that has beenattributed in part to a decline in smoking. But lung cancer remains the leading cause ofcancer death in the U.S., data show, and sur-vivor rates are extremely low.

“Because cancer is such an importanthealth problem and is costly in terms oftreatment and social costs such as loss ofwork time and quality of life, it is importantto have a clear idea of the changing burdenof cancer on society,” the report reads.“Keeping an eye on cancer rates providesclues about the causes of cancer, how suc-cessful we are at preventing cancer, andwhere we should focus our efforts in thefuture to make cancer a disease of the past.”

It will probably never be a disease of thepast for Weitz, who over the last decade hashad several operations and tried numeroustreatments with varying degrees of success.

Initially, doctors weren’t sure he had can-cer. A chest X-ray was taken. A CAT scan wasadministered. But the bronchoscopy led to adiagnosis of adenocarcinoma in his chest, which necessitated a conversation with histhree children. Weitz, who never smoked, then went through chemotherapy before anoperation to remove his left lung.

“My stamina got better, and my bodyaccommodated having one lung,” he said, noting that he can’t run and that he occa-

sionally gets shortness of breath. “The bodyis incredibly adaptable.”

Weitz was doing relatively well with a drugtreatment until he started having difficultyreading a computer screen, and he startedradiation therapy after an MRI confirmed hisfear that cancer had spread into his brain.

He later turned to a clinical trial for adrug that his mother learned about whilewatching a television news segment. Thedrug was reportedly successful for a patientwith a specific mutation, which Weitz laterlearned he had. The drug worked for fourand a half years.

Weitz then started on another medicinethat he’s taken for almost two and a halfyears, and he’s continued on the Alectinibregimen after undergoing a craniotomy lastyear to mitigate swelling in his brain.

“For 50 years nothing really evolved,” hesaid of cancer treatment options. “Now thereare so many new drugs. If you fail one, there’sanother one. I feel badly for those who neverhad this opportunity. I’ve been incredibly for-tunate. I thought it was a bad dream, but now[cancer is] not part of my daily routine.”

Weitz now does outreach through theLung Cancer Foundation of America, shar-ing his story with other patients. He urgesthem not to lose hope and reminds them, hesaid, that “no one has a crystal ball.”

Weitz’s goal is to turn what seemed like adeath sentence into a manageable chronicdisease. He said he encourages fellow lungcancer patients not to be afraid of clinicaltrials for new treatments.

“I don’t think I’ll ever be cured, but Idon’t think I need to be cured,” he said.“We’re just on the precipice of amazing newdiscoveries. Immunotherapy, coupled withtargeted therapies, can help, and no one cantell you how you’re going to do.”

Little League, the fundamentals were veryimportant. The big thing about me is, it’s notabout the championships. Would kids comeback and say how much they appreciatewhat I’ve done? That’s what drives me.”

McPherson has kept busy since graduat-ing from Samohi more than 60 years ago. After high school he served in the U.S. Armyfor three years, sustaining a knee injury thatkept him from playing football at a city col-lege.

McPherson landed work in quality con-trol for electronics, but he seized an oppor-tunity to learn about painting when a previ-ously arranged contractor failed to show up.That fateful scenario led to a long career forMcPherson as a painting contractor, whichtook him from Mandeville Canyon toManhattan Beach and beyond. And he hascontributed his painting skills to beautifica-tion projects at Samohi.

McPherson still lives near the intersection

of 21st Street and Delaware Avenue, hishome neighborhood since he was 12 yearsold. He still rides his bicycle. And he stilloffers private Little League lessons.

He and his wife will celebrate 55 years ofmarriage next month, a milestone thatmight not have arrived without a little per-sistence on McPherson’s part. He remem-bered driving around town, seeing her onthe street and pulling over to ask for herphone number, which she didn’t share. So heobtained her number through a churchdirectory, got in touch and met her familybefore taking her out on a date. The rest,McPherson said, is history.

McPherson’s legacy at the high schoollives on through his progeny. His childrenand grandchildren, including a currentsophomore, have also called Samohi theirscholastic home base. He’ll be surroundedby loved ones and friends at this year’sSamohi alumni picnic.

“My wife and I go every year,” he said.“It’s something I really look forward to.”

generally more secure than other varieties. However, thieves will exploit any opportuni-ty and even locked bikes are stolen. SMPDsaid locking a bike in a well-lit and populat-ed area is also helpful in preventing theft.

Stratton actually followed all the advicewhen heading for the Broad Museum inDowntown Los Angeles. He left his bike atthe bike racks near the downtown Expo sta-tion. He used a U-lock on the frame and anadditional wire around the tires.

“I was as happy as can be, then I comeback and the bike is gone but the lock isthere.”

With the lock still secured around therack, and apparently undamaged, Strattonsaid he was understandably upset. He sent atext to his family saying the day had beengreat, but it just got a lot worse.

Stratton then walked to the nearby policestation to report the theft. He praised thepolice for taking the report on a weekend, showing compassion and professionalismduring his complaint but it was a small com-ment from an officer that stuck withStratton. The officer mentioned that bikesstolen in Santa Monica are often taken tonearby Venice.

“I walk the mile and a half home and I’mgetting more and more mad but I’m think-ing about what the guy said so I get on myother bike and I decide to look around,” saidStratton. “I go back to the train station andhead right to the beach. I get onto the pathin Santa Monica and I’m riding towardVenice and I see a guy on my bike ridingtoward me.”

What Stratton did next is explicitly notrecommended by police officers. He con-fronted the rider who claimed to have pur-

chased the bike for $40 from someone inVenice. The bike was missing its basket butwas otherwise undamaged.

“I said, ‘OK you walk away and I’ll giveyou the $40.’ I ride it home and I’m talkingto the family and I get home and I said ‘screwthis, I’m going to find my basket.’”

He returned to the path and within a fewminutes he saw a woman staring at anapparently abandoned basket on the side ofthe path. It was his basket, complete with thestraps. The woman said she saw a pair ofmen abandon it and Stratton was able toreattach it with no problems.

Lieutenant Saul Rodriguez said thedepartment is always happy when propertyis returned, but cautioned residents againstdirect confrontation.

“If the owner/victim sees the bicycle, callSMPD or agency of jurisdiction. Do notconfront, it may make matters worse,” hesaid.

Rodriguez said it’s important for all bicy-cle owners to record and save their bicycleserial numbers.

When a bike is stolen, prompt reportingis also important.

“Report the loss to SMPD or agency ofjurisdiction,” said Rodriguez. “It is commonfor owners to not report the loss or not savethe serial number which makes it difficult torecover the bicycle or make an arrest.”

Stratton said he was happy to recover hisproperty and said there’s no reason todespair when property is stolen.

“As soon as it happens, you go to look inthe area, report it to the police and listen towhat the police are saying,” he said. “Guysare just grabbing (bikes) and selling themright in the area so don’t give up. Not manypeople will take the time, most of us will sitand sulk.”

Smoke Tales■ Researchers have identified agenetic mutation unique to humansthat allows our ancestors to adaptto smoke exposure. The mutationhelps our bodies better tolerate thechemicals in smoke and processthem in a way that minimizes harm. They suggest this mutation provid-ed an evolutionary advantage over, say, Neanderthals, who would havesuffered more from pollutants cre-ated by cooking fires.■ The downside is that the muta-tion may also have made it easierfor humans to take up the decided-ly unhealthy habit of smoking.

Insurance Pays■ Two new studies suggest thathealth insurance status -- that is,whether you have it and it providessufficient coverage -- might play arole in your outcome if you developcancer. In one study, researcherslooked at the medical records of10,211 testicular cancer patientsdiagnosed between 2007 and 2001.Men without insurance or withMedicaid were likely to have largertumors and metastatic cancer attime of diagnosis. The other studyof brain cancer patients found thesame disparities: Uninsured andMedicaid patients had largertumors and died earlier fromglioblastomas than patients withinsurance.■ The disparities, the researcherssuggest, might be due to delays inseeking treatment. Both studiesare observational. They don’t provecause and effect. But they arecause for pause.

Forgiveness allows for the cutting of emotional ties to the thing that went wrong so there is no need tospend any more time or energy on the issue. As for the “forgetting” part, that would be unwise. The pro-tective Scorpio moon suggests that you keep your notes on the matter, so as not to be vulnerable to thesame sorts of drama in the future.

Forgiveness and the Scorpio Moon

ARIES (March 21-April 19)You’re only just now getting to know someone. This is a phase of the relationship to stretchout for as long as possible. Stretching it outwill make for a better experience now and agood story later.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)Those who are reasonably sure that they are“good” don’t make goals around being good. That doesn’t, however, make them automati-cally good. Many aren’t self-aware. They don’tquestion their own behavior as you do.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21)Every group has its own special language, his-tory and culture. You may not know the ins andouts of this yet, but you know enough torespect that it exists and move with carearound those ideas.

CANCER (June 22-July 22)Once you are absolutely clear about what othersare expecting of you, you’ll find it easy to eitherdeliver it or have the conversation that gets youout of the arrangement with relative grace.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)When you’re feeling tough, the one who cancalm you and give you a sense of security willbe your most valued friend. Down deep, youdon’t want to have to fight so hard for thethings that should really be readily given.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)Every relationship has a status quo. You’vechanged, and the basic nature of your relation-ships must change, too. The norms that usedto be fine with you are no longer satisfactory.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)You need to feel a certain level of enthusi-asm in order to move ahead with the action, both from you and the others involved. If it’snot there, you’ll take it as a sign to stay put-- a legitimate and wise reading of the situ-ation.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21)Teaching what is known isn’t teaching; it’spreaching. Find out where the knowledge gapsare and you’ll quickly gain the rapt attentionand respect of your audience.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You’ve no need of social techniques or tricks. You’ve no need to employ any special socialdiscipline. The reason you seem so interestedin others is because you genuinely are.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You see the problem. Not everyone around youwill be able to see it. Then there are those whowill see it, and yet do not believe that it’s aproblem at all. You have a lot of convincing todo before a solution is possible.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Presence isn’t something you possess; it’ssomething you give off. You’ll radiate an ener-gy today that makes people feel good aboutthemselves, and the side effect is that they’llfeel good about you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). A good teacher erases the board, clearing thelast lesson before moving on to the next one.Otherwise, there’s a distraction hanging in theair that is mighty difficult to overcome.
