Integration Overview

General Concept

XProtect® Smart Wall is advanced video wall software that improves response times by providing a complete overview for large surveillance centers. This concept is now being extended to Barco video walls.

The Barco video wall controller independently decodes the requested streams and populates them on the Barco video wall grid by itself. You can control the Barco video wall in three ways: Barco’s Control Room Management suite software (CMS), XProtect® Smart Client, or a mix of both. This enables users to design an operational workflow that best suits the users’ needs and ensures smooth upgrades for existing customers. The Barco control room solution also supports the event-based rule architecture within XProtect Smart Wall.

The green lines illustrates the video flow.

You can control what is being shown on the Barco wall in three different ways:

1. Via an XProtect Smart Client operator

2. Via the XProtect Corporate or XProtect Expert rule system

3. Via the Barco sidebar application

In the XProtect Smart Client, the operator uses the available commands and layouts designed for XProtect Smart Wall. The commands issued by the operator are forwarded by a plug-in in the Event Server to the Barco CMS server. The Barco CMS and MGS servers contacts the relevant XProtect VMS servers to log in and receive video streams. In turn, these are decoded and shown on the Barco wall.

The XProtect Corporate and XProtect Expert VMS systems can also control the Barco wall automatically. This is done by setting up specific rules. For example, such a rule could be to show specific video from a camera having motion detected during night time. The rule system updates XProtect Smart Wall views, which again are forwarded to the Barco CMS server by a plug-in in the Event Server.

Prerequisites

Milestone XProtect Corporate 2013 (or later) or XProtect Expert 2014

Milestone XProtect Smart Wall 2013 or later.

Barco Transform N system: CMS 2.4.1 including MGS (Media Gateway Server).

For Barco customers currently using Apollo and/or Transform A, please contact Barco.

For Milestone customers currently using previous versions of XProtect Corporate, please contact Milestone.

In general, both Milestone and Barco support the widely available standard H.264 and, in most cases, MJPEG cameras and/or encoders. For a confirmation on a particular brand and model number, please contact Barco and Milestone for their interoperability lists or forward plans.

Please always contact Barco and Milestone for needs analysis and documented quotation.

Terminology

plug-in

Do not change the destination folder as the Event Server and the Management Client need to load the plug-in from a well-known place. If you have installed and run the Management Client from other machines, you should also run this installer on those machines in order to configure and maintain the Milestone-Barco integration.

After installation, you must stop and restart the Event Server. This loads the newly installed plugin in the Event Server. To load the plug-in, close and restart the Management Client.

Control of Barco Wall via rule system

You can define rules within the XProtect Advanced VMS to automatically modify the content of the XProtect Smart Wall and, thereby, the Barco Wall. If an indoor set of cameras are not supposed to identify motion during weekends, you could make the following rule to show video in case of motion:

Troubleshooting

There are two log files available for troubleshooting:

C:\Program Data\Milestone\XProtect Management Client\Logs\MIPtrace.log

C:\Program Data\Milestone\XProtect Event Server\Logs\MIPLogs\MIPyyyy-mm-dd.log

In these, you may find some info level log entries from the BarcoWall plugin.

Hints

If you see this message in the Event Server log:

2014-05-22 09:27:16 UTC+02:00 Error BarcoWall EventReader runPoller SoapException:Some unexpected error occurred while calling this method from Session [SID=37/EventServer@MILESTONE@1].

Please contact Barco Customer Support.

The message may appear because you have entered a wrong user name and/or password on the Identification tab. If you do not see any monitors or displays in the Management Client, try restarting the Management Client (this may happen right after the first install).

If Barco Display shows camera sources, but you cannot see any video and only a black screen is shown – check the following:

That the configuration file on the CMS server containing the XProtect Advanced VMS server address and credentials contains the correct values.

That the MGS Server address is correct entered in the Advanced tab

That the camera is licensed and live feed has started

That camera codec is configured to either JPEG or H.264.
