Editorial

A lot has been written and said about color. For artists and painters, color, in all itsimperfections, is the perfect way to express emotion. But most of us do not use col-or to express thoughts or feelings. In fact, for most of us correct color reproductionand interpretation are essential to business. This is obviously the case in the broad-cast industry, but also in process-oriented industries or surveillance applications colorand image quality matter.

Image quality in broadcast was in fact such a huge requirement that it is one of thelast industries to shift from CRT to LCD display technology. In most cases, profession-als like the camera controller, the light man, editing, post-production or film scanningstaff, still rely on a tube display to perform color grading. The reason? Maintaining col-or consistency over time and across displays. They simply could not take the risk thatcolors looked different on a second monitor or that colors would shift as the displayaged.

But at this year’s NAB show in April, Barco, a long-time reference in CRT broadcastmonitors, has introduced its grade-1 reference monitor for broadcast professionals andhas finally enabled the transition to LCD technology in this demanding market. Capi-talizing on advances made in LCD technology, Barco’s RHDM-2301 reference monitormatches and even exceeds the performance of Grade-1 CRT displays. It features someof the most advanced LCD technologies, such as a 10-bit panel and real time colorstabilized LED backlights.

But image quality and consistency is not confined to the production & post-productioncrews. Also the video walls used either as control wall for distribution monitoring oras a backdrop in studios, need to present true-to-life colors. An anchor standing infront of a huge backdrop with fainting colors will hardly add to the impact of theshow... And even beyond broadcast, operators using large-screen video walls in traf-fic management, surveillance centers or command & control rooms rely on imagequality to do a better job.

In this respect Barco’s Sense6 technology is very useful as it takes care of color sta-bility and calibration. This unique sensor technology is an active, sensor-based systemthat analyzes what the operator sees by measuring the output of the video wallrather than a specific optical component of the projector system. The technologyresults in uniform brightness, color, contrast and midtones for all cubes that composethe video wall.

Color matters. Be it in broadcast, traffic, surveillance, utilities or process control. Andas you will read in this issue of Control Zone, color even matters in rugged visualiza-tion where our display solutions need to present detailed, color-rich information inextremely demanding environments.

Enjoy reading.

Belgian broadcaster VTM redesigns news studio with advanced Barco video wallWhen Belgian broadcaster VTM planned the redesign of its news studio for 2008, it intended to further improve

the quality of its news presentation. With the successful installation of a Barco video wall in the restyled VTM news studio,

Flanders’ biggest commercial television station proved that it was able to meet this intention. Barco’s video wall offers VTM

the most reliable display technology, with outstanding picture quality and vibrant colors for statistics, background information

and live interferences during news emissions.

In total control

Since its founding in 1989 VTM aims tobring the public best quality news. Chiefeditor and news anchor Stef Wautersexplains: “With the founding of VTM in1989 we wanted to bring the Flemishtelevision viewers a completely differ-ent news approach. From the beginningwe aimed to be the fastest, most acces-sible news source of Flanders, alert andtrustworthy. Not only with our newsbulletins and general interest programs, but also with online news and textmessages.

With our totally restyled newsroom andstudio, we continue this tradition byimplementing the latest technologiesas a guarantee for reliable news andstable screen images”. VTM will use thelarge video wall for live reporting andto back up the news topics with graph-ics, statistics and background informa-tion.

Color quality matters

It is the second time VTM chooses Bar-co for its newsroom video wall system;the previous VTM news studio was alsobuilt around a Barco wall. The recentBarco 180W-lamp video wall installa-tion is part of the OV-D2 series and fea-tures vibrant colors, high contrasts, andlarge viewing angles tailored to the

human eye. Barco’s Sense6 technologyoffers continuous video wall uniformityover time and maximum readability.VTM Project Manager News Rooms GuyHannaert: “Screen stability in newsemissions is very important, as thewalls are watched by a huge number ofpeople. In the case of VTM at least1.250.000 people in Flanders watchVTM-news every day”. Guy Hannaertcontinued: “Besides this, the quality of

colors mattered to us. The wall is madeof 18 display cubes measuring 50” eachthat must have the same color defini-tions. Finally, the graphics and statsmust be readable for both the anchorsin the news rooms and the people athome.”

Barco’s high-bright video wallsfor backdrop applications

Barco’s has designed high-bright versions of its rear-projectionvideo wall displays which are specifically optimized for studiobackdrop applications. The high-bright OV-D2 video walls fea-ture a 180 Watt lamp system and are dealing with specific lightconditions in TV studio environments.

Barco has launched high-bright versions of its 50”, XGA OV-508and 70”, XGA OV-708 video wall systems. Both systems areequipped with 180 Watt lamps with significantly extended life-times. In addition, the high-bright video walls have a built-in inter-cube video scaling system which allows to present imageswith a resolution of up to full HD (1920 x 1080) scaled ontothe full video wall. The scaling system requires no extra hard-ware or software and provides the most accurate images with-out quality loss. Finally, the high-bright OV-508 and 0V-708include an optional 3200K color filter for studio environmentswith artificial lighting.

Barco brings new solutionsfor control room collaboration and information management

Barco recently launched its advanced control room management software and pow-

erful 3D workstation for multi-channel desktops and small to medium-sized video

walls. With these two interoperable visualization solutions, Barco is enhancing collab-

oration and information sharing between control room operators.

Today’s control rooms are complex net-worked environments handling an everincreasing number of video and datasources. Efficient collaboration and deci-sion-making is only possible if operatorsand decision-makers have easy andtimely access to this information. Withthe launch of these two new network-centric visualization solutions, Barcoallows control room operators to easilywork with large amounts of data and tocollaborate more efficiently.

Barco’s control roommanagement suite

Barco’s CMS software is an advancedcontrol room management suite whichfacilitates decision-making and allowsmore efficient collaboration betweenoperators, be it in one control room oramong control rooms or meeting roomson different locations. CMS providescontrol room operators and decision-makers with easy access to informationand allows them to connect to multiplesources, to configure how they are dis-played, and to collaborate in the mostefficient way.

Thanks to its networked concept, thecontrol room management softwareenables users to easily visualize sourcesin full quality, regardless of where theinformation has to be presented – onsmall LCD displays, video walls or oper-ator workstations. Since all sources areavailable over the network, no dedicat-ed hardware is necessary to visualizethe information. The CMS softwareoffers nearly unlimited possibilities tocontrol and manage displays andsources via an intuitive drag and dropinterface.

North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) is ajoint venture company of Tata Powerand the Government of Delhi. NDPLserves a population of about 4.5 millionpeople spread across 510 sq kms. It hasa registered consumer base of about 1 million, a peak load of 1150 MVA andan annual energy consumption ofaround 5900 MUs. The companybecame operational in July 2002 andhas initiated efforts to improve the pow-er distribution in North and North WestArea of Delhi.

In the beginning of 2008, NDPL inaugu-rated a new Center for Network Man-agement. The center was designed tohost the most advanced electricalautomation systems today and put NDPLat par with some of the world’s mosttechnologically advanced power distri-bution utilities. In the new center, Barco’s large-screen visualization tech-nology takes up a prominent place. Therecently installed video wall gives NDPLoperators a real-time view of the entirenetwork status.

lamp upon lamp failure. The video wall has been installed withan 8 degree curve, which gives operators a better ergonomi-cal view of all parts of the video wall screen.

The NDPL Network Management Center receives informationfrom all grid stations and distribution substations for completereal-time control, supervision and monitoring of networkhealth and load distribution. The system has allowed the pro-jection of the entire electrical network and land base (GIS-Geographical Information System) and historical data archivesonto the operator’s desktop.

The complete network at a glance

“The Barco rear-projection video wall presents NDPL operatorswith all critical information at a single glance,” says SanjayKumar Banga, Head of the NDPL Automation & Network Engi-neering division. “This significantly reduces the reaction timein case of incidents. The time needed to implement remedialactions post faults has reduced drastically, which has alsodecreased outage times and energy supplied to the customers. This way, Barco’s visualization technology enables NDPL tooffer the highest quality of customer service by efficientlyreducing its operational costs.”

The SCADA system presented on Barco’s video wall is the cor-nerstone for most of the automation functions like sub stationautomation, distribution automation and outage managementsystem etc. Some of these systems have been implementedin order to make NDPL a single cohesive and automated utili-ty thereby helping to serve the end customer in the best waypossible.

Deep impact Visualization solutions are being used to

speed up modern-day mining. At the

same time, they help to maintain strin-

gent levels of safety.

The mining industry has come a longway since the days of canaries in cagesbeing used to check air quality deepunderground: back then, if the birdskept chirping, the miners kept working. These days, a whole host of advancedtechnologies continuously monitor air-borne pollutants, such as CO2, gas, radioactivity, and dust. There is however one relic from the pastthat is alive and well: the old adage that‘time is money’. Much of the materialsthat are mined are precious metals andvaluable minerals. While oil still topsmost lists, gold, silver, copper, tin andzinc are also in high demand – in partdue to the increased global demand forderived products, such as computerchips, batteries and solar panels. As aresult of such demand, mining as anindustry has enjoyed a relative renais-sance and many organizations are nowrunning 24-hour operations. In UK coun-ties such as Cornwall and Devon, tinmines are reopening after being shutdown since the 1950s just to facilitatethe collossal demand from countriessuch as China. In Western Australia, meanwhile, high wages for mining jobsare persuading former city workers tolose their ties and change into overallsand get their hands dirty. Here, again,

these non-stop operations are feedingChina’s incessant demand for raw mate-rials to advance the country’s infrastruc-ture construction.

Monitoring safetyand efficiency

The long hours combined with challeng-ing targets make for a difficult situationfor mine workers and managers. And asmuch as safety has advanced over theyears, mining is nevertheless still a haz-ardous occupation. One of the worstaccidents occurred as recently as 2007.In December 2007, a gas explosion at acoal mine in northern China killed atleast 105 people in one of the country’sworst mining accidents this year. So, inorder to reduce the chance of incidentsas well as to enhance the control afterincidents, the mining industry is seekingsupport of sophisticated technologies. As well as safety, smooth-flowing pro-duction is also critical. In essence, thismeans each facet of the productionprocess must be monitored. If anythingat all occurs that halts the flow, operatorsneed to know about it and react imme-diately. This is where Barco comes in.

Guy Van Wijmeersch is Barco’s MarketDirector for the Utilities and ProcessControl markets – a role that he findsgetting busier by the day. “Mining isone of the industries supporting theglobal growth in infrastructure,” saysMr Van Wijmeersch, who has a deepunderstanding of the needs of hisclients in the mining sector. “Most com-panies today are investing in automat-ed operations: supporting tools tomaximize production, efficiency, qualityand safety.”

Guy Van Wijmeersch

There are dozens of processes in a busymining operation that need to be man-aged effectively – and large-screenvisualization systems in the controlroom are vital to ensure safety and effi-ciency. Whether it be the logistical coor-dination of the massive mining trucksand the trollies employed to removethe mined dirt in the first place, theexcavators within the mine itself, orindeed those trollies being transferredto refining to extract the gold, steel, orcopper, it’s an operation that needscareful and constant monitoring. “Having the best overview of thesehighly complex processes is not onlyrequired, but is also becoming more and more critical,” confirms Mr VanWijmeersch. “A mining site covers alarge area, often extending for manysquare kilometers, with trollies andtrucks having to cover distances as greatas 50km. It’s a substantial area to mon-itor, and can feature a great deal of sen-sors that must also be monitored.”What also needs to be appreciated isthat a mining site is not static: itchanges every time that a new pit is

mined or a new shaft is bored. Such asituation places specific demands on thesystem architecture that is used to keepthe flow moving.

Saving lives and money

So how are these various, disparateneeds addressed? “Remote camerasalong the roads and mineshafts are theeyes of the control room,” explains MrVan Wijmeersch. “Ethernet technology, meanwhile, provides the flexibility tofollow the continuous changes of thesite. The business itself is also very agileand can change according to commodi-ty prices. Barco’s open and scalablevisualization solutions meet this need togrow and vary with the requirement ofthe mine operator.”Mr Van Wijmeersch is observing closelythe trend towards more automation, butdespite the apparent ‘rise of themachines’, he is fully aware that humanbeings will always play an integral role:

“Although automated processes areintegrated more and more, humans willstill be required to run and monitor thebusiness. A display wall is a fully func-tional piece of equipment that givesmine operators, safety professionalsand businessmen the informationrequired to make money-saving andsometimes life-saving decisions – notonly in a reactive manner, but a lot ofthe time in a proactive way.”It is intriguing that Mr Van Wijmeerschrefers to saving lives and money in thesame breath. Mining companies arekeen to show that safety is a priority forthem: the bad publicity from a fatalaccident can cost them far more thanjust the terrible loss of human life. It istherefore part of their business strategyto ensure that all safety legislation isadhered to and that everything that canbe done to avoid an accident is beingdone. Surveillance cameras are the natural solu-tion to address the issue of safety. Com-bined with video-analysis tools, they arethe fastest way of spotting mudslides, truck breakdowns and anything else that

could halt production or adversely affect safety. The use of suchtechnology allows alarms to be generated quickly to enableoperators to make decisions that might avoid further problems.Barco display walls are the linchpin between the cameras andthe operators and Mr Van Wijmeersch is working with cus-tomers to tailor solutions to meet their growing list ofdemands: “Visualization solutions and scenarios are workedout and integrated in a very specific way,” he says. “Improvedvisualization is where we see growth opportunities for Barco:the integration of video and data, supported by video process-ing and information design, and then showing the condensedinformation on large screens – that’s what we’re focusing on.”

In terms of geographical markets, the USAbrings big opportunities for Barco, as docountries such as Chile, Russia and severalregions in Asia. These are areas with many

mineral resources to be extracted.

Recent mining references

Part of Mr Van Wijmeersch’s role is to listen to customer feed-back in order to push development forward. He reports anincreasing list of happy customers in the mining sector, one ofwhich is Morenci Mines, based in Arizona, USA. As well asinvesting in a display wall for its main control room, the com-pany also purchased another innovative solution: “We wereable to offer a visualization solution for the truck,” explains MrVan Wijmeersch. “This helps with visualization of the surround-ings by improving situational awareness. Drivers sit so high upin some of the trucks that they are sometimes in danger ofrunning over smaller pick-up vehicles or puncturing tires onsharp rocks.” When you discover that one of those gargantuantires costs around USD40,000 and can take several hours toreplace, you quickly appreciate the inherent value of such anaddition. Indeed, this particular customer came to Barco andrequested military-grade monitors, as previous consumer-grade products simply couldn’t cope with the harsh environ-mental conditions (dust and extreme temperatures).Another recent customer is the Brazilian company, CVRD. Barcoprovides CVRD with large displays to provide overviews of themining trollies that the company deploys to keep its processesrunning smoothly.Customer feedback given to Mr Van Wijmeersch confirmsexactly why Barco solutions are so frequently selected by com-panies in the mining sector: “Scalability, reliability and lowercost are all features that count for a great deal in remote sitessuch as mines. When a Barco installation technician has com-pleted his work and leaves the site, the solution must run for24-hours a day, the whole year round, without any mainte-nance required at all. All of this requires very specific andadvanced product features, none of which other commercialproducts are able to offer.”

EurocontrolEnhancing situational awareness of European air traffic

Every day in Europe more that 30,000 aircraft take to the skies. EUROCONTROL, the Euro-

pean Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation, makes sure that this air traffic flow

is a safe and efficient process. As an operational unit of EUROCONTROL, the Central Flow

Management Unit (CFMU) manages one single air traffic flow management system

over Europe.

The EUROCONTROL CFMU, located in Brussels, Belgium, ensures that the number of air-craft that plan to fly is never greater than the capacity of air traffic control to handlethem safely. To continuously optimize air traffic flow and reduce delays, the CFMUworks in close collaboration with airlines, airports and air navigation service providers.

To support its growth and to improve daily operations, EUROCONTROL put into use a newCentral Flow Management Operations Room in July 2007. Entering the new facilitiesin Brussels, Barco’s video walls immediately catch the visitor’s eye. Next to that, Barco’s technology has become an indispensable support for CFMU operators.

A situational overview for operators and visitors

There are two main activities in the operations room: Operations Service Delivery(OPSD), where the information on all European flights and the airspace infrastructure isprocessed and the predicted and actual traffic flow is managed, and the CFMU SystemsOperations Section (CSO), where CFMU systems and data are monitored, and real-timeconnections to these systems are deployed to more than 2,500 end-users worldwide.

Brian Flynn, Assistant Head of CFMU operations division explains the need for a high-quality video wall. “CFMU has a number of operational services which process a hugeamount of data on a daily basis. We have a large number of technical systems, bothinside the CFMU and outside, with remote access to our systems and informationdeployed in hundreds of different sites throughout Europe. To have a better overviewon our systems and to achieve situational awareness of the entire European traffic sit-uation, we were looking at a large-screen visualization solution that could support ourdaily operations.”

Another need was raised as a result of the information management role of EURO-CONTROL CFMU. “We are managing the flight planning and flow management services

on behalf of all European ANSPs,” com-ments Mr. Flynn. “Because of the natureof our work, we have a lot of Europeanvisitors, both from ANSPs and from air-line operations. Through our responsibil-ity and accountability to them, we feel itis necessary to provide visitors to ourfacility a real-time, realistic and synthet-ic view of our operations.”

All-in-one displaysolution

“We were looking for a company thatwas able to provide us with a total solu-tion, including all necessary hardwareand software and support. We did notwant to do any additional developmentwork.” Following a call for tenderprocess, Barco was regarded as the sup-plier that could best suit EUROCONTROL’sneeds. Barco came with an all-in-onesolution, including video wall displays, display controllers for transport of vari-ous sources over the network, and wallmanagement software. In practice, Bar-co’s technology approach allows tobring multi-platform content from vari-ous legacy operating systems with dif-ferent resolutions to the screen.

Bringing together this wide variety ofsources is a great enabler of situationalawareness.

Integration of sourcesonto a large screen

`The video wall display for the CFMUOPSD was installed early 2007. It con-sists of 67” display cubes with XGA res-olution in a set-up of six by two andspans about 8 meters wide. The OPSDoperators are presented with anoverview of a wide variety of informa-tion, such as flight plan data, maps, sur-veillance video, weather informationand slot allocation data.

In October 2007, Barco installed a sec-ond video wall display for the CSO sec-tion. This wall consists of 67” displaycubes with SXGA+ resolution in a set-upof four by two. On this wall, CSO opera-tors are presented with the real-timestatus of the many components of thetechnical systems, server and networkoverviews, and various planning data.

Enhanced situationalawareness

Both from a technical and an operationalperspective, Barco’s video wall technolo-gy significantly contributes to a highersituational awareness. At any one time, the CFMU operators now have anoverview of the current status of theirsystems (both operationally and techni-cally). “This morning for example, wehad fog in a number of European airportsand other congestions problems in sev-eral geographically dispersed parts ofthe airspace. These have led to a reduc-tion in the traffic acceptance rates ofthose airports and airspaces” Mr. Flynnillustrates. “Up to recently, if an operatorhad been dealing with the south-westarea of the European airspace, he wouldnot necessarily have been immediatelyaware that there are problems in otherparts of the airspace. The image pre-sented on Barco’s video walls is helpingto change this. This situational aware-ness helps our staff better to anticipatewhere our priorities, our resources needto be concentrated. Also, as to present-ing an enhanced image to visitors, theproject has been a real success.”

Barco’s arrival management softwareselected for the world’s busiest international airports

In 2008, UK air navigation service provider NATS expects to handle more than 2.4 million flights carrying over 220 million pas-

sengers. With air traffic safety, efficiency and cost-efficiency as foremost priorities, NATS chose to make use of Barco’s arrival man-

agement system for five airports in the London area. With the integration of Barco’s OSYRIS Arrival Manager Software with NATS’

existing air traffic control system, NATS will enable the efficient management of arrival air traffic for London Heathrow, Gatwick,

Luton, Stansted and London City.

Of key importance was Barco’s ability to meet NATS’ demand-ing project schedule and safety requirements. After an exten-sive technical and commercial evaluation, including visitingexisting OSYRIS users, NATS decided to implement Barco’sOSYRIS Arrival Manager.

Barco’s OSYRIS Arrival Manager is part of the OSYRIS COTS(Commercial Off-The-Shelf) product suite that has a provenoperational track record and has been designed based on ANSP(Air Navigation Service Provider) requirements and industryresearch. It increases the airports’ capacities and reduces the con-

trollers’ workload by optimizing the traffic flow. It helps tomake optimum use of the available resources and

makes flight operations for the airlines more efficient.Flight profiles are improved and holding patternsavoided, which reduces environmental problemslike pollution and noise. It ensures that the exist-

ing safety levels are maintained andeven improved, because it considersseparation requirements for the succes-sive takeoffs at all planning stages.

A custom NATS solution

For the NATS project, Barco will tailor itsfield proven application software tomeet the specific operational require-ments and procedures of the five air-ports concerned. Thanks to its excellentportability and open interfaces, theOSYRIS Arrival Manager can be smooth-ly integrated with the current ATC (AirTraffic Control) system.

“The Arrival Manager is another step onthe path for NATS to improve efficiencyand cut fuel burn and emissions”, ChrisOdam, NATS Director of Supply ChainManagement explains. “This tool will beinvaluable to controllers in charge ofsome of the most complex airspace inthe world over the London area airports. It will integrate with our operational sys-tems to give us the means to smooth theflow of aircraft, reduce stacking andimprove delay. We’re working in collabo-ration with Barco to tailor this product soit synchronizes with the special demandsof the London Terminal Maneuver Area.”

The Arrival Manager of choice for ANSPsworldwide

Barco’s OSYRIS Arrival Manager has become the arrival management application ofchoice for air navigation service providers, research organizations and system inte-grators worldwide, including EUROCONTROL, Skyguide Switzerland, Avinor Norway, CADHong Kong, CAA of Singapore, NAV Canada, Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. TheOSYRIS Arrival Manager forms the kernel of CALM, Skyguide’s Computer-assistedApproach and Landing Management System, which went operational at Zurich’sKloten airport in March 2001. Most recently in July 2007, OSYRIS was selected by HongKong (CAD), and the system is already in trial operation.

At this year’s ATC Global exhibition in Amsterdam, Barco pre-sented its integrated suite of arrival and departure manage-ment software for flexible resource utilization, reducedworkload and queue management in air traffic environments.

Barco’s OSYRIS AMAN-DMAN software can generate increasedcapacities for limited airside resources like runways and air-space. In addition, the suite offers environmental benefits as itleads to a reduction of fuel consumption and consequent airpollution. Both arrival and departure components are sepa-rately or jointly available.

With Barco’s OSYRIS AMAN-DMAN suite, both air navigationservice providers and airports can increase their efficiency andreduce environmental impact at the same time. For instance, controllers can organize inbound and outbound traffic in amore flexible way. When there’s an imbalance betweeninbound and outbound traffic demand, they may decide toopen up the departure runway for aircraft arrivals, or the otherway around.

Barco’s OSYRIS AMAN-DMAN software comes with modern, ergonomically designed graphical user interfaces that presentrelevant information to air traffic controllers depending on thesituation. The underlying workflow concept can be adapted asrequired by end users and Human Factors experts.

Barco’s High-Definition reference monitorNew Grade-1 LCD capturesBarco’s broadcast expertise

At this year’s National Association of Broadcasters’ (NAB)

exhibition, 14–17 April 2008, Barco has buildt on its estab-

lished reputation in color monitoring with the introduction of

its RHDM-2301 Reference Monitor. Carl Peeters, President of

Barco’s Security & Monitoring Division, talks about the strate-

gy behind the company’s re-entry into the Grade-1 reference

monitor business.

The RHDM-2301 is the latest evidence ofthis ‘red thread’ through Barco’s broad-cast display and visualization solutions, which started nearly 40 years ago whenthe company created the world’s firststate-of-the-art reference monitor. Thistrue Grade-1 LCD reference monitorhelps complete Barco’s vision of end-to-end calibrated solutions for broadcastand audiovisual professionals.

The reference for broadcast visualization

Barco has a long history of manufactur-ing display technology for the broadcastmarket. Barco developed specific driv-ing schemes delivering perfect gray andcolor tracking for CRT displays in the lateseventies. This made Barco the recog-nized brand for good skin tone repro-duction. With the introduction of the firstself-calibrating broadcast monitor in theeighties, broadcast professionals weredelighted to finally use a zero-mainte-nance product. Barco elaborated on thatsuccess with the introduction of a dedi-cated color imaging display family.

Re-entering the reference monitormarket

Thanks to recent advances in LCD tech-nology and Barco’s continuous R&Defforts, Barco is now re-entering the ref-erence monitor market, with the firsttrue Grade-1 LCD display for the profes-sional broadcast market.

“A number of factors have affected thetiming of this new development,” saysMr. Peeters. “The key one is technical.Until now, CRT displays have been theonly serious choice for professional,Grade-1 calibration duties. Now we cancapitalize on advances made in LCDtechnology to match, or exceed, theperformance of Grade-1 CRT displays.

We believe the RHDM-2301 will set anew standard in the professional broad-cast market – drawing on our deep cali -bration expertise in other fields, such ashealthcare and air traffic control.”

Another key factor is the market: theindustry is in rapid transition to digitalbroadcast, high-definition TV with veryhigh resolution and wide aspect ratio.New reference solutions are needed asCRT monitors finally become obsolete.

Standing out in three ways

Barco’s new reference monitor address-es three critical issues for providingGrade-1 performance from an LCD solu-tion: color accuracy, image stability andmotion handling.

Mr. Peeters: “For color accuracy, wehave introduced 10-bit panel technolo-gy and 48-bit image processing capabil-ities (16 bits per color). Thus theRHDM-2301 can truly reproduce a possi-ble 1,024 levels per color, resulting inover a billion possible colors and gray

scales. The used wide-gamut LED back-light allows achieving any current colorstandard, such as EBU, ITU, SMPTE andeven DCI. Each monitor is factory-cali-brated using a three-dimensional look-up table, using a high-precisionspectrometer and a proprietary calibra-tion algorithm.”

The RHDM-2301 has been designed toensure that colors stay true over time.To make sure what you see is reallywhat you get, the RHDM-2301 has inte-grated advanced calibration sensortechnology. This technology makes surethat the display remains calibrated in awide temperature range and for a long

time, which minimizes the need for fre-quent maintenance or recalibration.

Motion handling is excellent thanks tothe high-speed 120Hz panel and scan-ning LED backlight technology. Thepanel can be driven in real interlacedmode (with black-line insertion), to pro-vide CRT-like motion performance andremove de-interlacing artifacts. Thescanning backlight technology mini-mizes the LCD motion blur typicallyseen in LCDs. Both technologies providethe necessary ingredients to achievereproduction of moving images with aquality never seen before on an LCD.

The reference forcolor professionals

Barco’s RHDM-2301 display will mainlybe used in three application areas. Thefirst application area is image acquisi-tion and capture, where camera andlighting professionals need a reliablereference for the images being cap-tured. The second area is production, where control room personnel need anaccurate representation of incomingfeeds for source quality validation andfor program and output monitoring. Thelast one is post-production and editing, where high-grade color correctionneeds to take place before broadcastand storage.

Reference monitorsfor the digital age

If anything, the need for high-quality,high-reliability reference monitors is

greater now than it has ever been. CarlPeeters: “People expect so much morefrom visual media and entertainment,as High Definition digital broadcast TV,on-demand IPTV and digital cinemabecome the norms.”

“In this modern broadcast and distribu-tion environment, the number ofimages that need to be simultaneouslyviewed and controlled is increasing dramatically,” Mr. Peeters continues.“Barco’s networked visualization solu-tions enable production and master con-trol rooms to be cost-effectivelynetworked together. This improves oper-ators’ ability to monitor the broadcastprocess and visualize real-time videocontent, both in the control room andremotely on PCs and other network-con-nected devices with user-friendly inter-faces. This enables anyone, anywhere toview program content from any screen.”

In addition, Barco has been the leadingproponent of multi-view display tech-nology in broadcast environments – andthe high-grade calibration these sys-tems need.

Carl Peeters: “But there will always be aneed for single-view Grade-1 referencemonitors where accurate, reliable colorbalance is a must, not an option.”
