Thousands of students study Spanish at IH Barcelona every year. They come from all over the world and they'refrom all sorts of different backgrounds. 4. Business Spanish CoursesThe aim of these courses is to helpimprove the students' level ofcompetency in a range of work relatedactivities such as participating inmeetings, using the telephone forbusiness, negotiating and selling, makingpresentations, etc. Students are alsointroduced to a wide range of businessvocabulary and given an insight into thesort of cultural differences that they maycome across while working or doingbusiness in a Spanish speaking country.

Business Spanish courses consist of 4 or 6hours tuition per day for 2 weeks making40 or 60 hours in total. Students whotake the 60 hour course can take anexam at the end of the course, which isorganised by the Madrid Chamber ofCommerce.

5. Summer course for Teen-agers in Tarragona (13-17)Tarragona is an ideal location forteenagers. Situated on the Costa Dorada(Gold Coast) approximately 100 kmsouth of Barcelona, Tarragona is lively,but not too big; it has its own sandybeaches within walking distance of theschool; it is very close to Port Aventura -one of Europe's largest theme parks -and it is only an hour from Barcelona.

1. Intensive Group CoursesThis is our 'standard' Spanish coursewhich is taken by 90% of our adultstudents. It consists of 20 hours tuitionper week with classes normally held from09.30 to 13.30, Monday to Friday.

We offer ten levels of study which rangefrom absolute beginners to veryadvanced. Students with someknowledge of Spanish can start anyMonday throughout the year (exceptpublic holidays). Courses for completebeginners start on alternate Mondays.

2. Intensive Group Course &Spanish CultureDesigned for students who want to studymore than 20 hours per week, thesecourses combine an Intensive GroupCourse with extra conversation classes inthe afternoons. The afternoon sessions,which run from 14.30 to 16.00, Tuesdayto Friday, are designed to give studentsthe opportunity to develop their speakingand comprehension skills by talkingabout various aspects of Spanish cultureand history. Some afternoon sessionsmay take place outside the school.

3. DELE Preparation CoursesThe "Instituto Cervantes" organisesexams in the Spanish language known as"Diploma de Español como LenguaExtranjera" (or DELE) examinations.

IH Barcelona offers courses designed toprepare students for these DELE exams.Each course lasts for 4 weeks andincludes 20 hours of tuition per week.

The minimum level required to take theDELE Preparation course is LowerIntermediate. If you're not sure of yourlevel, try our free on-line level test whichyou'll find on our website.

6. Courses for the Over 50sThese 2-week courses are designed forstudents over the age of 50 who preferto study and socialise with people of theirown age. The course consists of 3 hoursa day of Spanish classes, which take placefrom 10.00 to 13.00, Monday to Friday.The course also includes a specialprogramme of visits to places of interestinside the city, a lunch or dinner in atypical Barcelona restaurant, and anexcursion outside Barcelona at theweekend.

7. Individual TuitionStudents can take from 1 to 6 hours ofindividual tuition per day. Students caneither study entirely in this way, or, if theyprefer, combine an Intensive GroupCourse in the mornings with 1, 2 or morehours of individual tuition in theafternoons.

The contents, times and starting dates ofthese private classes can be arranged tosuit the individual student's needs.

We can also offer similarly tailor-madeclasses for two students studyingtogether providing they have similarlevels and linguistic needs.

8. The Executive Plus CourseThis is a 5-day super-intensive Spanishlanguage course designed for peoplewho need to make a lot of progress in avery short space of time.

Each course includes:

9. Spanish Internships This programme combines a 4-week (ormore) Intensive Spanish course with a 12-week (or more) work experienceprogramme in a company based in ornear Barcelona. The work experiencecomponent is designed to help studentslearn job-related skills while practisingtheir Spanish. Work experience isconsidered to be a training programmeand students are therefore not paid fortheir time.

Students interested in following anInternship programme should apply atleast 3 months in advance of theirpreferred starting date. This will provideus with plenty of time to find a suitablecompany prepared to offer the workexperience component. Students shouldindicate on their application form whichsector or industry they are interested inworking in (e.g. tourism, shipping,insurance, architecture, horticulture,etc.). We will then do our best to find aposition in a company working in eachstudent's preferred field.

All students applying for an internshipshould send us a copy of their CV,together with a recent photo.

Minimum Level: Intermediate

10. Spanish at WorkSpanish at Work combines an IntensiveGroup course with sessions designed tohelp students find work. Students aregiven help preparing a CV and a letter ofpresentation in Spanish; they areprovided with information on where tofind work and we also organiseinterviews for them with work placementagencies.

11. On-line Spanish CoursesIH Barcelona is the birthplace of NetLanguages - one of the world's leadingvirtual language schools. Net Languagesoffers a range of Web-based languagecourses including Spanish courses foradults (16 or over).

Each course (or level) consists of 120hours of study materials and includesindividual tutorials with qualifiedlanguage instructors, most of whom arethemselves IH teachers. Students whobuy a course are also given access to allthe resources of our virtual languageschool (the library, study centre, café,etc.) and through the school they alsohave access to our growing communityof language learners around the world.

12. Intensive Group Coursesin different citiesIH Barcelona offers students thepossibility of combining their studies inBarcelona with a similar course in adifferent part of the country. In otherwords, students can now take a course inBarcelona of 2, 3, 4 or more weeks andthen continue their studies in Palma,Madrid, San Sebastian, Sevilla or one of anumber of other IH schools in Spain.

13. Custom-designedCourses for Special, ClosedGroupsIH Barcelona can design and give "made-to-measure" courses at any time of theyear for any kind of group. We will bepleased to send you a quotation for anyspecific course programme you wouldlike us to design for you.

14. Extensive Group Courses Our Extensive Group Courses aredesigned for people who are livingand/or working in Barcelona and don'thave the time available to studyintensively. These courses consist of 4hours of class per week with each courselasting 10 weeks (a term). We offer theseextensive group courses at all levels frombeginners to very advanced. We alsooffer a number of specialist courses on anextensive basis such as DELE PreparationCourses, Spanish for Business, etc.*

15. Spanish Teacher TrainingCourses IH Barcelona has been training teachersof Spanish since 1986 and we currentlytrain around 250 Spanish languageteachers per year. We offer three basiccourse programmes:

1. Host familiesAll our host families have been carefullyselected by our accommodationdepartment and many of them havebeen working with us for years. Studentsare always accommodated in singlerooms (unless a couple request to share)and they can choose between Bed andBreakfast or Half Board (which includesdinner in the evening).

Some of our families can offer students anumber of extra services such as theirown private bathroom, as well as alaundry and ironing service. Thesefamilies also offer both bed and breakfastand half board.

2. Rooms in sharedapartmentsIH Barcelona can offer students a singleor double room in a fully furnishedapartment which they share with otherstudents. Meals are not included but thefee does include a weekly cleaningservice as well as the use of linen andtowels.

When you're not studying you'll want to meet people, get to know the city and itssurroundings and practice your Spanish. To help you do all this IH Barcelona organisesan interesting and varied programme of social activities that regularly includes guidedvisits to places of interest in and around Barcelona, conversation exchange eveningswith Spanish people studying English or other languages, cycle tours of the city, tripsto the beach or to the cinema, white water rafting in the Pyrenees, scuba diving on theCosta Brava, etc.

Many of these activities are included free as part of the course programme; otheractivities involving transport, entrance fees or the hire of equipment are charged atcost price.
