WELCOME

From R. Daren Baxter QC, TEPPresident, Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society

On behalf of the Nova Scotia Barrister’s Society, I congratulate you on your admission to the Nova Scotia Bar. Today represents a milestone in your life resulting from many years of hard work and dedication. Being called to the Bar is a considerable personal achievement and certainly cause for celebration with your family, friends and colleagues. I encourage you to do so.

This is an exciting time in your career. Admission to the legal profession is a privilege. You will continue to learn about the law and the world in which we live every day you practise. This never stops. You will find personal satisfaction when you help others in times of legal crisis, and when you guide your clients through the maze of laws and our legal systems. You will have the opportunity to earn the respect of your clients, your peers and the public.

With this privilege comes the responsibility of exceptional service and leadership, both in the profession and in your community generally. As a lawyer, you are a role model for others. I ask that you be a leader in enhancing access to legal services and the justice system. Far too many Nova Scotians cannot afford or otherwise do not have access to much needed legal help. The Society also calls upon you to do your part in promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.

Our legal community is a good one. Never hesitate to call upon your colleagues for guidance or help. You will find that lawyers are always eager to help each other.

WELCOMEFrom the Honourable Chief Justice Michael MacDonald Chief Justice of Nova Scotia

Congratulations! Your years of hard work and perseverance have paid off, and it is my pleasure to welcome you to the incredibly rewarding profession that is the law!

You should be very proud of your career choice. I know I am after all these years. We should be proud because, first and foremost, ours is a helping profession. You have now earned the title of problem solver. Whatever area of law you choose — family, criminal, civil, commercial, corporate, or administrative — people will look to you to help solve their problems. Should you serve in public life, people will turn to you for wise counsel. You are now trained to take a problem, assess it, and resolve it. That is a very important skill set. It represents an opportunity that should be embraced with enthusiasm. By doing so, your career should be both rewarding and satisfying.

However, with those opportunities come significant responsibilities. Most importantly, society relies upon the legal profession to courageously defend the rule of law and democracy. Please use your skills to speak up and take appropriate action when you see corruption, injustice, or inequality. You are now uniquely qualified to do so.

As well, please do what you can to enhance access to our justice system. This involves more than simply going to court. Instead, access to justice means access to an efficient and affordable process to resolve our disputes, whatever shape that may take. To lay people, our justice system must be scary and intimidating. We must all do what we can to demystify it, and make it more efficient and affordable. Please use your skills and ingenuity to make that happen.

At the end of the day, this is what being a lawyer is all about. Amidst the many responsibilities we all have, we must make time to give back to the communities that helped us get to where we are today.

On behalf of the entire Judiciary, congratulations on your admission to the Nova Scotia Bar and best wishes in your career.

See you in court!
