The Royal College of Ophthalmologists is proud of your accomplishment and looks forward

to working with you to maintain the excellent standards in our

speciality and help shape the future of ophthalmology

The Admission Ceremony is a time to acknowledge achievement and a time for reflection and celebration with family and friends.

In many cases, it heralds a move to a new job with new opportunities. Whether to pursue general ophthalmology or sub-specialised work, our specialty is both rewarding and

fulfilling for the doctor and, more importantly, for the patients.

Training as ophthalmologists means that we can transform people’s lives by treating eye disease, restoring sight, and preventing loss of vision.

Throughout an ophthalmologist’s career in the UK the College is a constant, as the focus for continued professional development, maintaining and setting standards and

representing the profession of ophthalmology. As a member you will have opportunities to contribute and improve the core services of training, education, assessment and raising

professional standards through the many important College roles available to you at certain points in your career.

The knowledge and skills you have assimilated, can be maintained through the College’s active seminar and Congress programmes and provision of clinical and service guidelines

which enhance the delivery of efficient and evidence-based care.

This continued professional development will ensure your skills and the behaviours expected of a practising ophthalmologist will always be of the highest quality.

We are all aware of the severe disruption of the pandemic on our ophthalmologists in training.

I would like to pay tribute to the way you have stepped up to care for patients, support the service and help allied professionals. It has been a difficult and sometimes fearful time. You have been tremendous, and, in response, our efforts have been directed to support you and

to protect training as much as possible.
