WOMEN’S CORNERSTONE Reunion Meeting will be held on Sunday, January 31st, 2016 from 4-6pm in the Holy Family Knights of Colum-bus Hall (light refreshments will be served).

"Holy, holy, holy" … At Mass we say, "Holy, holy, holy,

Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. " What is this prayer, where does it come from, and what on earth does "Hosanna" mean?

This prayer is called the Sanctus be-cause that is its first word in Latin. The first line is the hymn of the seraphim in Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation 4:8. The second part is what the crowd cried to Jesus at his triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Mt 21:9), which is modeled after Psalm 118:25.

Hosanna is a Hebrew term which is derived from the words yasha, which means "save," which is an expression of entreaty or request and can be translated in a variety of ways-for example, "I pray," "I beseech," "please," or "O." The Hebrew terms were combined - yasha na ("O, save!"), as in Psalm 118:25 - and this be-came hosanna.

It was used as part of the Jewish temple liturgy during the feast of Taber-nacles, when the priests carried willow branches and cried "Hosanna!" while pro-cessing around the altar of burnt offering'. Over time, the crowd gathered to worship picked it up, and it became a cry of joy. The seventh day of Tabernacles even came to be called "Hosanna Day."

Thus the crowd greeted the Messiah by waving palm branches and joyfully crying "Hosanna!" to him as he entered Jerusalem. By this time, the term may have lost some of its original meaning and may have been mostly an acclama-tion of joy and petition (as it is now dur-ing Mass).

Yet it still carried the air of a joyful petition for deliverance The expression "Hosanna to the Son of David!" was an exhortation to acclaim or praise the Mes-siah in hopes of deliverance (probably from the hated Romans in the mind of the crowd).

The expression "Hosanna in the highest!" is more mysterious. Sugges-tions have included the idea that it is an exhortation to us to cry "Hosanna!" to God, that it is an exhortation to the an-gels to cry "Hosanna!" to God, that it is an exhortation for there to be songs of praise in heaven, and even that the phrase means "Up with your branch-es!" (on the unlikely supposition that the branches carried during the feast of Tab-ernacles had come to be called "hosannas"). "Hosanna" was used as part of Mass in the first century. The Didache (A.D. 70) includes the acclamation "Hosanna to the God of David!" among the congregation's responses during the prayer of thanksgiv-ing after Communion.

JANUARY BIBLE STUDY Joseph from Old Testament Genesis 37-50 Joseph had a lot of things going his way in life at first. He was the first son born to Jacob through Rachel, and there-fore, he was his father’s favorite son. He had great dreams that made him feel good about himself. But then one day his entire life changed. Can you imagine how it must have felt to know your brothers hated you so much that they would sell you out of their lives? He was forced to leave the comfortable life he had known, full of love from his parents, and go forth into the unknown. How frightening that must have been for a boy of 17. Yet, God had His hand on Joseph. God had a divine purpose for this young man. Joseph didn’t know why God had chosen this path for his life until the very end, yet he never seemed to wa-ver. God was always in control. Joseph kept his eyes on God, and He used Joseph greatly. What an encouragement to us. At the meeting on January 12 at 7pm in Church Hall we will try to understand the deeper meaning of that story. The meeting will be one hour and I ask everyone who would like to participate to read the chapters 37 to 50 from the Book of Genesis. For the week after (Tuesday January 19) at 7pm in the Church Hall we have an amazing movie about Joseph’s story. Everyone is welcome even if is your first time.
