GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

The Baptism of the Lord January 12, 2020 The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives four rea-sons for the Incarnation, why God became man in Je-sus Christ. The third reason is “to be our model of holi-ness.” All of Jesus’ words and actions model for us what we ought to do. He also shows us how we’re meant to be. Jesus’ baptism ought to remind us of our own baptism and of the importance of baptism in the Christian life. The Baptism of the Lord reminds us of our Trinitarian identity. When we are baptized, we stand in solidarity with Christ, bathed in the waters he sanctified. There, the Father proclaims our adoption into the family of God. “‘This is my beloved son [this is my beloved daughter], with whom I am well pleased.’” And the Spirit, too, descends. We are filled with the Spirit’s grace and power to continue Christ’s mission on earth. We received these gifts in the sacrament, and they continue to dwell within us through sanctifying grace. We can — and should — invite God to stir up these graces of our baptism and consider them in our own lives. Does Christ feel like a distant relative two thousand years in the past? Or do you see him as someone who can be encountered here and now? Ask yourself where you find your sense of dignity and worth. Do you still search for it in success, social status, and selfish pursuits? Or are you able to rest in being a be-loved child of God? Remember, baptism gives us a call and a charge to change the world. Do you pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you? Or are you so focused on your own life that you miss the mission? This week, let’s do as Jesus did. Let’s live in our baptism! ©LPi

After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened

for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descend-ing like a dove and coming upon him. And a

voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well

pleased.” - Mt 3:16-17

MASS INTENTIONS

Sharing the Gospel

Jesus came to John one day to be baptized. Jesus was God's Son, and had no sin for John to wash away in the Jordan River. But Jesus wanted to be baptized anyway, to please his Father in heaven. God looked down from heaven, and when Jesus came out of the river, God sent his Spirit to rest on Jesus like a dove. Then God spoke from heaven for John and everyone else to hear. God said, "This is my son." Prayer Dear God, thank you for showing John that Jesus was your Son. Something to Draw Draw a picture of Jesus on the day of his baptism. Mission for the Week Ask your parents to tell you about the day when you were baptized. ©2007 - PO Box 510817, New Berlin, WI 53151-0817 1-800-950-9952 x2469 LPiResourceCenter.com

Electronic Giving

Electronic giving (called WeShare) is the preferred way to make your weekly offertory. By giving electronically, it relieves the need for about 6 parishioners to count money every Sunday (about 10 hours total). Furthermore, the parish could eventually save money on envelope printing and mailing and you would not have to write checks. The Finance Council would also be able to budget more efficiently. Please consider making the switch; it is safe and secure. Cards are avail-able in the back of church with instructions to join WeShare and have your offering sent electronically. If you need assis-tance setting this up, please don’t hesitate to call the parish office (410-289-0652). Thank you for your continuing support.

Tax Free Charitable Distribution

Need a tax break? Congress has permanently enacted qualified charitable distributions from your traditional IRA accounts. These distributions can be used to satisfy all or a portion of your Required Minimum Distribution and are free of federal and state income tax. Also, these gifts help you avoid the Medicare high income surcharge and can help reduce your income taxes on your social secu-rity benefits. Distributions must be made directly from your IRA ac-count to St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. For questions, contact the parish office at 410-289-0652

“GO FUND ME” Capital Campaign Site

Please tell your family, friends, and neighbors and/or post on social media that St. Mary’s Star of the Sea has a Go Fund Me page to help us finance the Ex-panding Our Home capital campaign. This project not only expands and renovates historic St. Mary’s Church, but also improves Ocean City’s downtown.
