Highlights

Summary
Leg 2 of the Bangarang Project 1 was productive and packed – another successful chapter in the project’s finalfield season.
This project’s mission is to investigate the oceanographic mechanisms of habitat use by marine mammals,seabirds and other mobile marine predators within this complex fjord system. On a typical Bangarang day, ourthree-person team conducts visual surveys for whales and seabirds while our echosounder maps swarms of preybelow using high-frequency acoustics. These transects are punctuated by visits to a grid of oceanographic sta-tions, at which we cast our zooplankton net and a CTD (which measures properties like temperature, salinity,oxygen, chlorophyll and pH) down to the seafloor. When we see whales, we approach them for photo-identificationand behavioral focal follows.
OceanographyThe fjord system was hot, dry and windy (and plagued by horseflies). Water clarity increased in all channels –
more than tripling in Squally, Campania and Caamano. CTD casts revealed that June’s surface mixed layer per-sisted only in Estevan Sound and McKay Reach, although subsurface mixed layers were found in Squally, Whaleand Verney. Chlorophyll and Dissolved Oxygen profiles were muted everywhere, with fluorescence maxima oc-curing deep everywhere with the highest amplitude in Estevan and Caamano. An extensive red tide bloom oc-curred during this leg - traces of it were found in all channels, but extensive fields occurred in Squally, Wright,Campania and Caamano. pH values dropped throughout the fjord system – extremely low values (high 5s, low6s) lend suspicion that instrument calibration is almost certainly off. Deep waters remained at around 8 deg. Cin all channels, but surface waters warmed substantially (12-19 deg. C), the warmest areas being north Squally,eastern Wright and northern Ursula. Southern-offshore channels were generally coldest, the exception beingsouth Verney. June’s offshore-inshore surface salinity gradient remains for the most part, though outer chan-nels are more saline and the freshest region of the study area is now eastern Wright. Surface properties of inlandchannels (Whale and Verney especially) remain much more variable than those of outer sounds.
Zooplankton and FishZooplankton geography has changed dramatically since early June. Estevan and Squally, once full of subsur-
face krill patches, were relatively empty. Conversely, Wright Sound and Lewis Pass experienced dramatic in-creases in deep krill patches (though these seemed much less dense than those of early June). Surface swarmsof krill were observed in association with humpback whale feeding events upon herring and sand lance in lowerEstevan and Cridge Pass. Tows suggested less overall zooplankton density (some were practically empty). Ofnote: krill of all size classes were captured in the inland channels around Gribbell Island, although echogramsdid not reveal many krill patches. Jelly populations exploded in localized areas and clogged our zooplanktontows: south Squally, south Campania, northern Loredo Sound, and central Verney. Lion’s mane and moon jellieswere the most abundant, although large aggregations of 2-4cm cross jellies were also found in Squally and Cam-pania. Schooling fish were more prevalent compared to Leg 1, especially herring in Estevan Sound. Sand lancesand associated predator aggregations were also observed along many shorelines in Estevan, Caamano, Squallyand Wright. Many more jumping salmon were observed throughout this leg.
SeabirdsThe seabird community shifted slightly since June. The season’s first sightings of red-necked phalaropes and
Cassin’s auklets occurred in Estevan Sound. Rhinoceros auklets have arrived in great numbers, concentrated insouth Squally, Campania, and Caamano Sounds. Astounding numbers of marbled murrelets and common mur-res were found in north Squally, especially near Twartz Bay and Union Passage (Cridge Pass may be a marbledmurrelet flyway between north Squally and an old-growth nesting forest). The most exciting sighting was eitherthe Leach’s storm petrel seen in north Estevan or the juvenile ancient murrelet seen near Union Passage. Pacificloons seemed less common compared to Leg 1 and cormorants were curiously absent. Breeding plumage seemedmuch more common among the gulls. Bald eagles were prominent players in sand lance feeding frenzies.
Marine mammalsDall’s porpoises sightings remained numerous, and no other small odontocete species were seen. Humpback
whales concentrated themselves in northern Squally, Lewis and Wright Sound, the exception being the establish-ment of the area’s bubble-net feeding group (up to 17 whales) at work in the outer channels. More mother-calfpairs arrived. On the longest day of the year, our team participated in the first annual ”SUbarctic Summer Sol-stice Identification Bonanza All Day” (the Sussidibad), during which we identified 30 humpbacks and fin whales,including the highly esteemed Claude (CSY0037)! In this leg we collected 89 IDs and executed 58 focal follows.

Humpbacks were more commonly found resting during daylight hours, which may suggest a shift to nocturnalfeeding activity. Fin whales seemed few (an estimated 6-8 are in the area); those that were seen were activelyfeeding in aggregations of several whales. The only whale sighting to occur within the inland channels were twogroups of Bigg’s killer whales (the T59’s in northern Whale and the T10’s in northern Ursula).
VesselsFishing pleasurecraft were common in the area, as were transiting commercial fishing vessels. No vessel inter-
actions with cetaceans were observed.
BangarangThis is what it’s all about. The vessel is not only working flawlessly, but it is getting better : engine room sound-
proofing, a new battery switch, new wood finishing and a canvas cover for the over-the-side hydrophone. And wenow have a fishing license. Canada Day at Whale Point was perhaps the best ever, and the Bangarang and itscrew were decorated festively for the Fourth of July. Good times abound in Hartley Bay: including creek swim-ming, high school graduation ceremony, and Aboriginal Day. Can’t wait for Circuit 3!
