The Banaras Hindu University invites applications for admission to programmes leadings to Doctor of

Philosophy/Vidyāvāridhi Degree (herein after referred to as the Ph. D. Degree) in various disciplines as given in Section A for registration in July 2006 and January 2007 semesters. Registration shall be done as per norms decided by the Academic Council of the University from time to time. The registration shall be through the Common Research Entrance Test (CRET) to be conducted at Varanasi on Thursday, 15.06.2006, and through Direct Admission as per details given below.

The University invites applications through Direct Admission twice in a year, about two months before the start of the semester.

A. Ph.D. DEGREE AVAILABLE UNDER VARIOUS FACULTIES A candidate should first consult the list of disciplines given below in which research is conducted and the CRET is being held. Then from the list of allied subjects given in the Appendix, he/she can find the other departments for which he/she is eligible to apply for registration if he/she qualifies in CRET/eligible for Direct Admission. In the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Law course work is a part of the requirement for the award of the Ph. D. degree. A candidate shall be required to pursue course work, appear in examination and pass with the prescribed passing criteria.

The list of Disciplines given above includes all the Department/Schools of BHU where Ph. D. programmes are offered.

IMPORTANT: (i) During the current session there will be no registration for Ph.D. in Ayurveda Samhita, Marathi, Museology,

Kannada, Musicology, Molecular & Human Genetics, Microbiology (I.M.S.) and Biochemistry (I.M.S.). (ii) During the current session, CRET will not be conducted for the Faculties of Visual Arts, Performing Arts

and Department of Physiology (I. M. S.). However, Direct Admission (CRET-exempted) will be made in these Faculties/Departments.

(iii) CRET will not be conducted for the candidates having engineering background seeking admission to the Faculty of Engineering & Technology. They will be considered for Direct Admission only, provided they fulfill the prescribed requirements for Direct Admission. However, candidates who have qualified in CRET conducted by the other faculties may be considered for admission to the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, provided they are found qualified otherwise.

(iv) For Direct Admission (CRET-exempted), see section H.

NOTE: (i) For being eligible to apply for the CRET, a candidate must satisfy himself/herself that he/she satisfies the prescribed minimum qualifications. (Section ‘B’)

(ii) A candidate can appear in CRET in one discipline only. (iii) A candidate is required to mention his/her choice of Discipline and Faculty for appearing in CRET on

Forms ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ and also on the two Admit Cards. If a candidate does not fill his/her choice, the University reserves the right to allot any discipline to him/her, as deemed fit, which will be final and binding on the candidate. Discipline once indicated in the Application Form shall be final and shall not in any case be permitted to be changed subsequently on any ground.

(iv) If a candidate's qualifying examination is in a discipline in which CRET is being conducted, he/she must appear in CRET in the same discipline. If a candidate's qualifying examination is in a discipline in which CRET is not being conducted (e.g. "Life Sciences") he/she has to choose one of the related disciplines in which CRET will be conducted.

(v) Candidates holding M. A. degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Geography and Home Science will appear in CRET for Faculty of Arts and those holding M. Sc. degree in these disciplines will appear in CRET for Faculty of Science. Similarly, candidates holding M. A. degree in Psychology will appear in CRET for Faculty of Social Sciences and those holding M. Sc. degree will appear in CRET for Faculty of Science.

(vi) In case of operational difficulty, any of the disciplines for CRET may be withdrawn at any stage.

B. QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS AND MINIMUM PERCENTAGE OF MARKS A candidate shall be required to have: (a-1) passed the qualifying examination securing the minimum percentage of marks as per details given below: Details of Qualifying Examinations: Note: (i) Any degree mentioned under the qualifying examination for each Faculty in the following pertains to the degree awarded by this University or any other University established by law for the time being in force or any other degree recognized as equivalent thereto in that subject. (ii) For SC/ST/PC candidates, see the provision given below.

I. Faculties of Arts, Visual Arts, Social Sciences, Science (a) Qualifying Examination: (i) Master’s degree* in the concerned subject OR (ii) Masters degree* in any one of the

allied subjects pertaining to the department**/school+ as per the list given in the Appendix. (b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying

examination. Note: *For the department of Geophysics, Faculty of Science, in addition to having passed the qualifying examination

with the requisite percentage of marks, a candidate must have studied Physics and Mathematics for at least two years at undergraduate level.

** Not applicable in Faculty of Visual Arts + In Faculty of Science II. Faculty of Performing Arts

1. For admission to Ph. D programme in all departments except in the Department of Musicology: (a) Qualifying Examination: (i) M.Mus. OR M.A. in Music OR (ii) Master’s Degree in any subject and having

passed any one of the following examinations: (a) B.Mus.Sangeet Visharad Examination of Bhatkhande Vidyapeeth, Lucknow. (b) Sangeet Prabhakar Examination of Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad. (a) Qualifying Examination: Master’s degree OR M. Phil. in Musicology (b) Qualifying Marks: With Master’s degree in Musicology: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade

point average in the qualifying examination. With M. Phil. in Musicology: At least 65% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

III. Sanskrit Vidya Dharm Vijnan

(a) (i) Qualifying Examination: Acharya degree in the concerned subject OR (ii) Acharya or equivalent degree in any one of the allied subjects pertaining to the department as per the list given in the Appendix.

(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

IV. Faculty of Commerce

(a) Qualifying Examination: Master’s degree in Commerce (M.Com.)/ Finance and Control (M.F.C.)/ Business Management (M.B.M.) OR in allied areas namely, M.A. in Economics/ Sociology/ Psychology, M.A./ M.Sc. in Statistics or Home Science, M.Sc.(Ag.) in Agricultural Economics, LL.M. Chartered Accountancy (C.A.) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Costs & Works Accountancy of the Institute of Costs & Works Accountants of India (I.C.W.A.I.), the Company Secretaryship of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (I.C.S.I.).

(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

V. Faculty of Management Studies (a) Qualifying Examination: Master’s degree in Business Management (M.B.M.), Management Studies/

Management Sciences (M.M.S.), Business Administration (M.B.A.), International Business Administration (M.I.B.A.), International Business (M.I.B.) OR Two years postgraduate diploma in Management from any one of the Indian Institutes of Management (I.I.Ms) or Xavier Labour Relations Institute (X.L.R.I.), Jamshedpur or Management Development Institute (M.D.I.), Gurgoan or Institute of Management and Technology (I.M.T.), Ghaziabad or Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (I.I.F.T.), New Delhi or International Management Institute (I.M.I.), New Delhi.

(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

VI. Faculty of Law

(a) Qualifying Examination: Bachelor’s/ Master’s Degree in Law. (b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying

examination, with Master’s degree as the qualifying examination. OR At least 60% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination, with Bachelor’s degree as the qualifying examination.

VII. Faculty of Education

(a) Qualifying Examination: M.Ed./ M.A. (Education)/ Master’s degree in Special Education [M.Ed. (Spl.)] OR Master’s degree in Psychology/ Sociology/ Philosophy/ Economics/ History/ Physical Education.

(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

VIII. Faculty of Engineering & Technology (a) Qualifying Examinations: (i) Bachelor’s/ Master’s degree in the concerned branch of engineering OR (ii)

Bachelor’s/ Master’s degree in Pharmacy for admission to the Ph. D. programme in the Department of Pharmaceutics OR (iii) M.A./ M.Sc. in the concerned subject for admission to the Ph. D. programme in the Departments of Applied Chemistry, Applied Mathematics and Applied Physics. OR (iv) The qualification in any one of the allied subjects pertaining to the department/ school/ discipline as per the details given in the Appendix.

(b) Qualifying Marks: (i) At least 60% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination, with Master’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Pharmacy or equivalent as qualifying examination. OR (ii) At least 70% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination, with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Pharmacy or equivalent as qualifying examination. OR (iii) At least 60% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination, with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Pharmacy or equivalent as qualifying examination and having a minimum of 2 years of experience in research/industry/ teaching in the relevant area. OR (iv) A minimum of 5 years of experience in research/R & D organization in a technical capacity and sponsorship by the organization with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Pharmacy or equivalent as qualifying examination. OR (v) At least 60% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination, with Master’s degree in Science/ Business Management/ Agriculture as qualifying examination. OR (vi) At least 60% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination, with M.D./ M.S as qualifying examination.

IX. Faculty of Agriculture

(a) Qualifying Examination: (i) Master’s degree in Science/Agriculture (M.Sc./ M.Sc (Ag.) in the concerned subject OR (ii) Master’s degree in Science/Agriculture (M.Sc./ M.Sc (Ag.) in any one of the allied subjects pertaining to the department as per the list given in the Appendix.

(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

X. Faculty of Medicine (a) Qualifying Examination: (i) Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)/ Master of Surgery (M.S.)/ Doctoratus of Medicinus

(D.M.)/ Magister Chirurgiae (M.Ch.)/ Diplomate of National Board (D.N.B) in the concerned subject recognized by the Medical Council of India. OR (ii) M.Sc. in the concerned subject OR (iii) Master’s degree in any one of the allied subjects pertaining to the discipline as per the details given in the Appendix.

(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination (wherever the marks/grades are awarded).

XI. Faculty of Ayurveda

(a) Qualifying Examination: (i) M.D.(Ay.)/ M.S.(Ay.) recognized by Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM). OR (ii) Master’s degree in any one of the allied subjects pertaining to the discipline as per the list given in the Appendix.

(b) Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

XII. Faculty of Dental Sciences (a) Qualifying Examination: Master’s Degree in Dental Surgery.

(a-2) For SC/ST & PC Candidates: There shall be a relaxation of 5% marks (or equivalent grade point average) for SC/ST and PC candidates in the minimum marks required in the qualifying examination. The minimum

marks required for SC/ST and PC candidates in the Academic Record shall be 45 as given above in (a-1). However, a Physically challenged (PC), SC/ST candidate shall not get the double benefit of being SC/ST as well as a PC candidate in the above relaxations.

Case 2 Where undergraduate degree is considered as the qualifying examination: M = 45 (X2 + 0.4x X3 + 0.3x X4)/100

Case 3 Where the candidate has passed Higher secondary Examination only (instead of High School & Intermediate both) M = 45 (X1 + 0.6x X2 + 0.4x X5)/100

nearest integer. X1 = Percentage of marks obtained at the post-graduate examination, X2 = Percentage of marks obtained at the under-graduate examination, X3 = Percentage of marks obtained at the intermediate/higher secondary examination, and X4 = Percentage of marks obtained at the high school examination. X5= Percentage of marks obtained at the higher secondary examination.

Note: In case the results of various Exams. do not have percentage, but letter grades, CGPA (out of 10) multiplied by 10 will constitute %. If the CGPA is available out of 4, then CGPA multiple by 25 will constitute the percentage.

C. RESERVATIONS 15% of the total number of available seats shall be reserved for SC candidates, 7.5% for ST candidates and 3% for Physically Challenged (PC) candidates: Visually Impaired (1%) + Hearing Impaired (1%) + Orthopaedically Handicapped (1%). The PC candidates must have studied in the Schools for Blind students or Integrated Schools for Disabled persons. They will have to submit a Disability Certificate issued by the District CMO with the Application Form. Such candidates eligible for counseling will be examined by a Medical Board constituted by BHU and if necessary, will be referred by the Medical Board to other recognized bodies for the purpose, as per criteria fixed by the University. ‘Writer’ for Blind Candidates: ‘Writer’ will be provided by the University to each blind candidate. The qualifications of ‘writers’ shall be decided by the University. Such a candidate is required to apply for ‘writer’ to the Controller of Examinations on the prescribed application form for the purpose at least 15 days prior to the date of the Entrance Test. For this purpose, the candidate has to collect the form from the Office of the Controller of Examinations, and submit the same affixing a passport size photograph identical to that affixed on the application form. Such candidate will have to appear before the Head, Department of Ophthalmology for clinical examination and opinion/recommendation which will be considered before providing ‘writer’. N.B. for ‘Physically Challenged’ Candidates: In certain Courses/Departments/Faculties (like Faculty of Agriculture, Dept. of Physical Education), admission of Physically Challenged candidates is not permissible. Details may be sought from the Controller of Examinations. If PC candidate is not available, the seat may be transferred to the candidates of general category. The number of seats reserved for SC/ST/PC categories shall be reduced proportionately if number of qualified candidates is less. The vacant seats reserved for SC/ST candidates, if any, shall be filled as per Government of India rules. Each SC/ST candidate shall have to submit a copy of the Certificate mentioning that the candidate belongs to SC/ST community. Such certificates shall be subject to verification from the concerned District Magistrate. The following are empowered to issue the certificate: (a) District Magistrate/Additional District Magistrate/Collector/Deputy Commissioner/ Addl. Deputy Commissioner/Deputy

Collector/Ist Class Stipendiary Magistrate/City Magistrate/ Sub-Divisional Magistrate/Taluka Magistrate/Executive Magistrate/Extra Assistant Commissioner.

(b) Chief Presidency Magistrate/Addl. Chief Presidency Magistrate/Presidency Magistrate. (c) Revenue Officer not below the rank of Tehsildar. (d) Sub-Divisional Officer of the area where the candidate and/or his family normally resides. (e) Administrator/Secretary to the Administrator/ Development Officer (Lakshadweep Islands). Candidates must note that Certificate from any other person/authority shall not be accepted in any case. Further, ‘General category’ includes all candidates other than those belonging to SC or ST. If the candidate happens to belong to SC or ST, his/her caste/tribe must be listed in the appropriate Govt. of India schedule. The caste Certificate should be in the Govt. approved format and should clearly state: (a) Name of his/her caste/tribe (b) whether he/she belongs to SC/ST (c) District and the State or Union Territory of his/her ordinary residence and (d) the appropriate Govt. of India schedule under which his/her caste/tribe is approved by it as SC or ST.

D. GENERAL NOTES

(i) Notwithstanding anything contained in the Ordinances, the eligibility requirements for the purpose of admission shall be only those which are mentioned in the Information Bulletin of the academic session concerned.

(ii) All Ph. D. Scholars shall be governed by the Ph. D. Ordinances. (iii) No full-time Ph. D. scholar shall accept during the period of research any paid assignment apart from Research

Fellowships, Research Assistantships, Senior Residentship/Service Senior Residentship etc., as permitted by the University.

(iv) A Ph. D. scholar shall not be permitted to join any other degree course. However, he/she may be permitted to join part-time Diploma or Certificate Course(s) as per provisions made under the relevant Ordinances.

E. GENERAL RULES

(i) A candidate who satisfies the requirements mentioned in Section B should apply on the prescribed Application Form consisting of three Forms: Main Form (Form ‘A’), Registration Form (Form ‘B’)) and Basic Data Form (Form ‘C’). A candidate seeking Direct Admission (as mentioned in Section H) should fill only Form ‘A’ and leave the Forms ‘B’ & ‘C’ and the two Admit Cards blank. However, such a candidate should clearly indicate on Form ‘A’ that he/she is exempted from CRET. (ii) Category should be claimed by an applicant in the boxes provided on page 1 of Form A. The Candidate is required to mention his/her category in clear terms. The category to which the applicant belongs once mentioned on the form as ‘Yes’/’No’ shall be final and no overwriting/ subsequent change shall be allowed. If boxes requiring indication of category on the application form are left blank, the candidate shall be treated as under general category and he/she cannot claim the benefit of any other category later on, even though he/she might have enclosed supporting certificate(s)

with the application form. (iii) Application Forms of candidates who have submitted forged/fake certificates or adopted fraudulent means shall be REJECTED without any intimation to the candidates. Further, such candidates shall be debarred from appearing in any subsequent Entrance Tests conducted by BHU. (iv) Candidates are allowed to appear at the CRET provisionally subject to the final verification of Mark sheets/Degrees/Certificates, validity of Certificates/Mark sheets of Qualifying Examination and also of involvement in the adoption of unfair means in any of the University Examination/Entrance Tests held earlier, at the time of admission. Degrees/Certificates recognized by Association of India Universities (AIU) shall only be deemed as equivalent degrees/certificates. The Distance Education Council of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)/Association of Indian Universities (AIU) is the only authority to recognise the Degrees/Certificates of Distance Education. Such Candidates are provisionally permitted to appear in the Entrance Tests but will be required to submit certificates from Distance Education Council of IGNOU, New Delhi regarding recognition/approval of the courses. (v) Mere appearance in the Entrance Test, or securing pass marks at the written Test does not entitle a candidate to be considered for admission to the Course unless he/she fulfils the eligibility conditions. APPLICANTS MUST FULLY SATISFY THEMSELVES ABOUT THEIR ELIGIBILITY AS PRESCRIBED ABOVE, BEFORE FILLING IN THE APPLICATION FORM. If an applicant is inadvertently allowed to appear at the Entrance Test who otherwise does not fulfill the minimum eligibility requirements, he/she cannot, at a later date, use that as a right to claim that he/she meets the eligibility requirements.

The University reserves the right to cancel/refuse admission at any point of time if it is found that:

(i) Minimum eligibility requirements are not fulfilled. (ii) False documentation has been submitted. (iii) Any other similar valid reason.

(vi) Candidates appearing at the CRET shall be subject to Rules, Regulations and Ordinances relating to the University examinations. Candidates found adopting unfair means (see Section M) shall be liable to punishment as per University rules.

(vii) (a) In case of any dispute relating to the CRET/admission to Ph.D., the decision of the DRC/SRC shall be final. An appeal may lie to the Vice-Chancellor, BHU against such decision. In no case any candidate shall take recourse to the court of law directly.

(b) In case of any litigation relating to the CRET/admission to Ph.D. course the District Court of Varanasi and the High Court of Judicature of Allahabad shall only have the jurisdiction.

NOTWITHSTANDING ANYTHING TO THE CONTRARY CONTAINED ANYWHERE IN THE ORDINANCES OF THE UNIVERSITY, NO SCRUTINY/ RE-EVALUATION OF THE ANSWERSHEET OF THE TEST SHALL BE ALLOWED ON ANY GROUND. FURTHER, NO REPRESENTATION OR QUERY REGARDING THE CONDUCT OF THE TEST SHALL BE ENTERTAINED.

F. IMPORTANT DATES Commencement date of sale of application forms from the office counter and by post: 29.04.2006 Last date for receipt of requisition for sending the application forms by registered post: 13.05.2006 Last date for sale of application forms from the office counter: 22.05.2006 Last date for receipt of duly completed application forms both by hand and by post: 23.05.2006 DATE AND TIME OF CRET : Thursday, 15.06.2006 from 9.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m.

(i) The completed application form should be sent (in the envelope supplied with the application form for the

purpose) to the “Controller of Examinations, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi - 221 005” so as to reach his office on or before 23.05.2006. Applicants are required to retain the acknowledgement slip in respect of submission of their application forms by post. Those submitting their application forms at the BHU counter will be given acknowledgement slip.

(ii) Application forms shall be received at the counter without any immediate scrutiny. Validity of the application form shall be based on its objective scrutiny to be conducted at a later date.

(iii) In no case applications shall be entertained after the last date is over. (iv) Application forms that are incomplete/not properly documented/do not bear the signature of the applicant

himself/herself/received after the last date shall not be considered. Application forms without photographs or with xeroxed photographs also shall not be considered. Applications not bearing the signature of the candidate on the declaration form shall be rejected outright. The University takes no responsibility for any delay or loss of application form or correspondence in postal transit/courier transit.

G. DOCUMENTS TO BE ATTACHED WITH THE APPLICATION FORM

The following documents must be attached with the Application Form: (i) MICR Demand Draft/Banker’s Cheque (issued by a Bank) for Rs. 350/- in case of General Category and

Rs. 125/- in case of SC/ST Category in favour of “Controller of Examinations, Banaras Hindu University”, payable at Varanasi. [For candidates appearing in CRET]

(ii) Self-attested copies of Marksheets, Certificates and Degrees of all the Examinations (Board/University) passed (from 10th standard onwards) and also marksheets of all the parts of graduation and postgraduation courses.

(iii) Certificate in support of the category claimed for in the application form: (a) Attested copy of Caste Certificate from the competent authority as mentioned in the Section C of

Bulletin. (For SC/ST category candidates only) (b) Certificate from Chief Medical Officer of a District. (For Physically Challenged candidates)

(iv) Character certificate from the Head of the Institution last attended. (v) NET/GATE qualifying certificate issued by the appropriate authority (for NET/GATE qualified candidates). (vi) Candidates whose results of qualifying examination have not yet been announced officially must attach a

certificate in original issued by the respective Principal/Head of the Institution, regarding their appearance in the qualifying examination.

(vii) Any other relevant documents in support of the qualifications/experience. (viii) A Self-addressed unstamped envelope of size 18 X 10 cm. Application Form not fully documented shall be summarily rejected without assigning any reason whatsoever. No document shall be accepted after the submission of Application Form in the Office of the Controller of Examinations. If a candidate has submitted fake certificate/fake documents, his application form shall be rejected, he shall not be eligible to appear in CRET and he shall also be debarred from appearing in any of the future Entrance Test of the University. In case this is detected at any stage of his registration in the Ph.D. Course, his registration shall be cancelled forthwith and he shall also be debarred from appearing in any of the future Tests of BHU.

H. DIRECT ADMISSION

A candidate who fulfils one of the following requirements may be considered for direct admission to the Ph. D. programme on supernumerary basis without appearing in the CRET: (i) A candidate who is qualified in a national-level test such as National Eligibility Test (NET), Graduate Aptitude

Test for Engineering (GATE), State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) accredited by UGC, Central or State Government.

(ii) A candidate who is a recipient of National Doctoral Fellowship or other fellowships from government/semi-government organizations such as Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Ayurveda Yoga Unani Siddha Homeopathy (AYUSH) and similar national-level organizations.

(iii) A candidate who is selected under Quality Improvement Program (QIP) of AICTE, Faculty Development Programme (FDP) of a State Government or of UGC.

(iv) A candidate who is sponsored as a full-time candidate by any other university/ institution/college/ government department/ public sector undertaking/ R & D organization/ private industry, with at least 2 years of experience and who is relieved on study leave for a period of not less than two years for pursuing Ph. D. programme in a Department/ School of the University.

(v) A foreign national who is a recipient of fellowship by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India and who is sponsored by his/her government.

(vi) A self-financing foreign national who is admitted through the Embassies/High commission of his/her country after getting approval from the Ministry of External Affairs and no objection certificate from the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India or admitted under an MoU.

Note: 1. The equivalence of the Degree possessed by the foreign candidates belonging to the categories at (v) and (vi) above, shall be settled by the equivalence committee of the concerned faculty before their admission. They shall be admitted to the Ph. D. programme only if the degree possessed by them entitles them for enrolment as Ph. D. scholars in the universities of their own countries.

2. The supernumerary seats for self-financing foreign nationals shall be restricted to a maximum of 15% of the total available seats in a Department/ School.

(vii) A candidate who is already registered as a Ph. D. scholar in some other university and whose supervisor joins this University.

(viii) A candidate who is sponsored as a part-time candidate by a non-degree awarding institution/ government department/ public sector undertaking/ R & D organization/ private industry, with at least 2 years of experience, who shall work for his/her Ph. D. in his/her parent organization fulfilling the residency period requirement prescribed in the relevant ordinances. The candidate is required to submit a sponsorship and work experience certificate from the parent organization. The non-degree awarding institutions, government

departments, public sector undertakings, R & D organizations and the private industries are only those, which are recognized as centers of research by the University as specified in the Ordinances.

(ix) A permanent teacher of the University or of the constituent/ affiliated colleges of the University with more than one year of service.

(x) A non-teaching permanent employee of the University with more than two years of service in the University who is otherwise eligible.

(xi) Candidates holding P. G. Degree (D. M. /M. Ch.) in super-specialty subjects in the Departments of Faculty of Medicine.

However, all the exempted candidates must apply in the prescribed CRET Application Form in order to be eligible for consideration for admission. The applications of the candidates belonging to the categories (iii) to (x) above shall be routed through proper channel.

I. WRITTEN TEST 1. A candidate possessing the minimum qualifications with the requisite percentage of marks and academic

record, as ‘mentioned at Section B shall be eligible to appear in the written test. In addition, a Senior Resident/Service Senior Resident of the Faculties of Medicine and Ayurveda shall also be eligible to appear in the written test, subject to fulfilling other eligibility conditions.

2. There shall be separate tests for each Faculty, except for the Faculty of Engineering & Technology. 3. The test shall be of 2 hours duration, carrying 300 marks, consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions. The

distribution of questions shall be as follows: (i) There shall be 70 questions (Section ‘A’) of general nature to test the knowledge of the candidates in

fundamentals and also to test their logical and analytical thinking, quantitative ability, language skills, computer awareness, general knowledge, etc. These questions shall be common to all the candidates appearing for the test in all the departments/schools of the concerned faculty and shall be based on the subjects taught at the intermediate/higher secondary and graduate levels. The structures of question papers for various Faculties have been given below.

(ii) In addition, there shall be sets of 30 questions (Section ‘B’) of specialized nature, each one corresponding to each Department/School of the Faculty. The candidate shall be required to answer only one such set of 30 questions corresponding to the subject of his/her qualifying degree. These questions shall be of post-graduate level in the concerned subject.

4. There shall be negative marking. Three marks shall be awarded for each correct answer, while one mark shall be deducted for each incorrect answer. Un-attempted questions shall be awarded zero marks.

5. For qualifying in the written test a candidate shall have to secure a minimum of 35% marks in each Section (viz. Section ‘A’ & Section ‘B’) separately. The qualifying marks for SC/ST and PC candidates shall be 30%. The University reserves the right to modify the minimum qualifying marks for any or both of the Sections.

6. No scrutiny/revaluation of the answer books of the written test shall be allowed. Faculty-wise Structure of Question Paper:

J. TEST FEE

The candidate desirous of appearing in CRET shall pay the Test Fee of Rs. 350/- in case of General Category and Rs. 125/- in case of SC/ST Category along with the Application Form through a crossed MICR Demand Draft/Banker’s Cheque issued by any Nationalised/Scheduled Bank in favour of the “Controller of Examinations, Banaras Hindu University”, payable at Varanasi. Candidates to note that only MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) Drafts shall be accepted. NOTE: (i) The applicant is advised to write his/her name, name of the discipline and form number on the reverse of the

MICR Demand Draft/Banker’s Cheque (issued by a Bank). (ii) The Test Fee paid shall neither be refunded nor transferred to another course and shall also not be reserved for any subsequent year, in any case. (iii) Candidates applying for Direct Admission are not required to pay the Test Fee. (iv) The applicant is advised to ensure that the MICR Demand Draft/Banker’s Cheque (issued by a Bank) fulfills the following requirements: ● ●

IMPORTANT: If the MICR Demand Draft/Banker’s Cheque (issued by a Bank) is incomplete/incorrectly drawn or is a non-MICR, the candidate will be disqualified unless he/she resubmits the corrected MICR Demand Draft (issued by a Bank) along with late fee of Rs. 150/-.

K. DESPATCH OF ADMIT CARDS PROVISIONAL ADMIT CARD for appearing in the CRET will be issued to every candidate applying for appearing in CRET without any scrutiny of the candidature and will be sent by Registered Post in the envelope provided for the purpose. On that envelope the candidate should write neatly his/her complete postal address with pin code at which he/she may receive the Admit Card. University shall not be responsible for any delay in communication caused due to wrong/incomplete address given by the candidate or any delay/loss in postal transit. If a candidate does not receive the Admit Card or any communication till a week before the date of the Test, he/she should contact the Office of the Controller of Examinations, BHU, Varanasi on Phone No. 0542-2368418, Fax No. 0542-2368418 & 0542-2368174 or e-mail: [email protected]. Candidates may be issued duplicate Admit Card on request from the Office of the Controller of Examinations only on the day preceding the concerned Test on production of relevant documents for proof of identity and a self-attested photograph (identical to that pasted on the Application Form). No candidate will be allowed to appear in the Test without a valid Admit Card issued by the Office of the Controller

The candidates are required to retain the Admit Card in safe custody after the Test for presenting it before the DRC/SRC if called for Subjective Test/Personal Interview and admission. Important: The candidate should carefully examine the Admit Card and the Seating Arrangement received by him/her for all the entries made therein. In case of any discrepancy the candidate should inform the Controller of Examinations immediately. DUPLICATE ADMIT CARD WILL NOT BE ISSUED ON THE DAY OF THE CONCERNED TEST FROM THE OFFICE OF THE CONTROLLER OF EXAMINATIONS, BHU.

A Question Booklet containing the questions and a separate Answer Sheet shall be provided to the candidate at the beginning of the Test. The candidate, within 10 minutes of the issue of the Questions Booklet, shall check the Question Booklet to ensure that it contains all the pages in correct sequence and that no page/question is missing. In case of faulty Question Booklet, the candidate shall immediately bring it to the notice of the Superintendent/Invigilators to obtain a fresh Question Booklet. The candidate is required to write his/her Roll Number, Question Booklet No. and Set No., if any, at the appropriate places provided in the answer sheet in INK/Ball Point pen only. In addition, he/she is also required to fill up Roll Number in the space provided at the bottom of the answer sheet by darkening the appropriate circles by Blue/Black Ball Point pen only. The candidate is required to write in INK/Ball Point pen only, his/her Roll number and Serial Number of Answer Sheet at the appropriate places on the cover page of the Question Booklet. Each question shall be followed by four alternative answers. The candidate is required to identify the one which he/she feels to be the correct answer and record the answer by darkening the appropriate circle in the answer sheet with Blue/Black Ball Point pen only, as will also be mentioned in the guidelines given on the first page of the Answer Sheet. For example, if out of 4 alternatives (1) (2) (3) & (4) given against question No. 15 the candidate identifies (2) as the correct answer, he/she is required to darken the circle No. 2 only in the Answer Sheet as given below:

The answer will be treated incorrect if more than one circle is darkened or a circle is darkened improperly. Any other method of marking such as tick mark, cross mark, use of dot, line mark and half-filled circle or marks outside the circle shall not be evaluated. If any question is not attempted, the candidate is required to leave all the circles against that question as blank. Such an answer will be awarded zero marks. Inner cover page of the Question Booklet or the blank space/page of the end of Question Booklet may be

used for rough work. No page from the Question Booklet is to be torn or removed. If a candidate is found tearing any page from the Question Booklet he/she shall be liable to punishment for adopting unfair means and shall not be allowed to continue in the Entrance Test. IMPORTANT: CANDIDATES TO NOTE THAT, SINCE ANSWERS ARE TO BE MARKED IN INK, IT WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE TO

CHANGE ANY ANSWER AFTER MARKING IT. IMPORTANT (i) Candidates found using/adopting unfairmeans in the CRET shall be disqualified from the test and also shall

be debarred from admission even for any other course in future in BHU. A candidate shall appear in the test as per rules, regulations and ordinances of the University framed from time to time.

(ii) Not withstanding anything to the contrary contained anywhere in the ordinances of the University, no scrutiny/ revaluation of the answer book of the test shall be allowed on any ground. Further, no representation or any enquiry regarding the conduct of the test shall be entertained.

M. IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES APPEARING IN CRET

(i) The Candidate must carry his/her valid Admit Card for the concerned Entrance Test. He/She must occupy only his/her allotted seat as per his/her Roll Number in the seating arrangement made for the concerned Test.

(ii) No Candidate will be allowed entry to the Test Hall after 30 minutes of the start of the Entrance Test. (iii) No Candidate shall be allowed to leave the Test Hall till the end of the Test. (iv) There is no provision to provide or permit a ‘writer’ in the Entrance Test except for blind candidates, who will

be provided ‘writers’ on request [For details please refer to Section C of this Information Bulletin].

(v) The Candidates shall be checked for any resource materials frequently and at random by the Invigilators and other staff conducting the Test, routinely and also on the slightest doubt.

(vi) Calculators/watch calculators, electronic diary, pager, mobile phones, earphones, alarm clock, digital watches with memory, slide rule, etc. are not allowed in the examination hall. Also, carrying of licensed weapon, fire arms, tools which can be used as lethal weapons are not allowed in the examination hall.

(vii) Any of the following actions by a Candidate shall disqualify him/her to take the Entrance Test, and the result of his/her Entrance Test shall be cancelled and he/she will also be debarred from future Entrance Tests of the University: (a) Tampering with the Admit Card including that of the photograph; (b) (i) Not occupying the allotted seat;

(ii) Tampering/disturbing the seating arrangements; (c) Relevant or irrelevant resource material or loose paper found on his/her person, or, lying on or around

his/her seat; (d) Smuggling-out or smuggling-in Question Booklet in part or in full, or Test material, or any resource

material connected with the Test; (e) Making any attempt to influence the University authorities directly or indirectly; (f) Using unfair means during the Test. The malpractice and unfair means shall include:

Possession of any unauthorized instrument or equipment (mentioned above)/document/paper/information materials or any resource materials. Communication of information in writing or verbally or exchange of Question Booklet/Answer Sheets to and from any other person during the Test period and any other malpractice amounting to obtaining undue advantage. Disturbing or trying to disturb the Entrance Test. Writing anything in the Admit Card. Carrying of the envelope of the Admit Card and seating plan into the examination hall. Any alterations or corrections in the entries made by a candidate in Question Booklet and OMR Sheet [Roll Number in words & figures and OMR sheet no. in Question Booklet and Roll Number, Question Booklet no. and Set no. (if any) in OMR sheet] but not duly verified by the invigilator concerned. Non-matching of signature made at the time of Entrance Test with that already done at the time of filling of Application Form. Face not resembling the photograph on the Registration Form and the Admit Card. Noting down the question or their answers. Shouting of slogans or creating unruly scene at the examination hall/examination centre/University campus.

(viii) Impersonation is a legally punishable offence. No Candidate will be permitted to appear in the Test without a valid Admit Card. The Admit Card should be presented to the invigilators/other authorised officials for verification. The candidate’s identity will be verified in respect of his/her details on the Admit Card/Registration Form (Form ‘B’). If the identity is in doubt, the candidate may not be allowed to appear in the Test. The authorities may at their discretion provisionally permit the candidate to appear in the Test after completing formalities including taking of thumb impression/several signatures for further verification. No extra time will be granted for these formalities to be completed. Similarly, at the time of Subjective Test/Personal Interview and admission, the candidate’s identity will be verified from the documents available with the University and in case of any doubt, his/her admission will be deferred till final verification. A person found to impersonate a candidate shall be handed over to the Police under an FIR lodged by the University. The candidate in reference shall be debarred from future Entrance Tests of the University. A student or employee of the University if found to impersonate in the Entrance Test will be respectively rusticated or dismissed from the University service.

(ix) Suppression/concealment of information: The candidate must ensure that he/she is qualified to appear in the Entrance Test. If it is detected at any stage that he/she did not fulfill the minimum qualifications, or, there was something against the candidate which would have prevented him/her from being admitted in the concerned subject, or, the candidate has provided false information or no information about his/her previous involvement in an act punishable under law or act of gross misconduct and indiscipline, then his/her candidature shall not be considered and his admission if already made shall be cancelled at any stage and he shall be debarred from appearing in any of the future Entrance Test of the University.

(x) Nobody other than the University authorized personnel is permitted to move around the Test venue. Any unauthorized persons loitering around the Test venue shall be handed over to the police under an FIR lodged by the University.

(xi) No scrutiny/re-evaluation of answer sheet of the Entrance Test is allowed in any case at any stage. (xii) The candidate shall be bound by the BHU Statutes/Ordinances/Rules and Regulations framed from time to time. (xiii) Any litigation in respect of the Test shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the local Court of Varanasi and/or

Hon’ble High Court of Judicature at Allahabad only.

N. ADMISSION Mere fulfilling the minimum eligibility requirements shall not entitle any candidate for admission to Ph. D. Course. No candidate shall be considered for registration for Ph. D. course if he/she fails to submit all the required certificates in original at the time of counselling/interview and the availability of vacant seats in the Department. The admission shall be based on the merit of the candidates, which shall be determined separately for the candidates seeking admission through CRET and through direct admission. The merit lists shall be based on the total marks obtained by the candidates from the components as mentioned hereunder: 1. Through CRET: (i) The Written Test (ii) Academic Record (iii) Subjective Test/Personal Interview 2. Through Direct Admission (CRET-exempted): (i) Academic Record (ii) Subjective Test/Personal Interview Academic Record: This shall be calculated as explained in Section B. Subjective Test/Personal Interview: Subjective Test/Personal Interview of the candidates shall be conducted at the level of the Department by a Committee. The subjective test/personal interview shall carry a maximum of 60 marks and in which a candidate is required to secure at least 20 marks to qualify. The qualifying marks for SC/ST and PC candidates shall be 15. Merit List: The merit list shall be prepared by duly constituted committee as provided under the Ordinances. The total marks obtained in the “Written Test, Academic Record and Subjective Test/Personal Interview” will be the final score used for preparing the merit list specialization-wise, the number of candidates in the published merit list shall be three times/four times the number of vacancies in each specialization. The number of seats available shall be notified at the time of counseling by the department/school. The Merit list so declared will not be valid for registration in next Semester and all those candidates whose names were forwarded after being short-listed in Written Test and finally not admitted, will be interviewed again (provided they are called, as per the alphabetical list of the candidates qualifying the written test already sent to the Head of Deptt.) and specialization-wise Merit List after taking into account marks in “Academic Record” & “Subjective Test/Personal Interview”, would be drawn again. The Head of the Department/Coordinator of the school shall then issue the letter of admission to the candidates. On receipt of the letter of admission, each candidate shall pay the prescribed fees and complete other official formalities pertaining to admission within 3 days.

O. REGISTRATION OF FOREIGN NATIONALS Applications of Foreign Nationals nominated by the Govt. of India under scholarship scheme and self-financing Foreign Nationals shall be entertained for the aforesaid Courses. The foreign nationals need not appear in the entrance test for admission. However, they should have passed the equivalent Qualifying Examination from an Indian or Foreign University / Institution. Provision to the extent of 15% of the total seats in each department on supernumerary basis for Foreign Nationals is available. All the foreign nationals have to fulfill the following conditions: - A. At the time of submitting the application

(i) All the foreign nationals should submit their applications, along with the processing fee, on prescribed format, which can be freely downloaded from the website www.bhu.ac.in.

(ii) The applications of scholarship-holding Foreign Nationals (under various schemes) are routed through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations/ Ministry of Human Resource Development (Department of Education), Govt. of India, New Delhi.

(iii) They hold a valid foreign passport. (iv) The antecedents of the candidate have been verified by the forwarding Agencies/Ministry and found in

order. (v) That they have adequate knowledge of English and/or Hindi as per the requirements of the Course.

B. At the time of admission (i) They have valid Residential permit in India granted for studies/Student Visa for the prescribed duration

of the concerned Course. (ii) They fulfill the minimum eligibility requirements.

C. General • The Degrees/Certificates of the candidates have been recognized and approved by the Association of

Indian Universities (AIU)/Commonwealth Universities/International Association of Universities (IAU) as equivalent to the corresponding Indian Degrees/Certificates.

• All the eligible foreign nationals are required to fill up the Registration Form prescribed by the University at the time of admission.

• The inter-se merit among the applicants of various foreign nationals will be decided by the “Core Committee for Admissions of Foreign Nationals”, which shall be deemed as final.

Further details regarding admission of foreign nationals are available on the website www.bhu.ac.in which is updated periodically.
