Practice Schedule

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

Practicing is very important! You should aim to practice everyday in 10 minute sessions (for beginners). Use the chart below to keep a record of your practice sessions. If you are not sure what to practice, look at one of the example practice workouts in this book or ask your tutor.

The F chord

FX X

or...F

Your 1st finger is going to cover both the 1st and 2nd strings on the 1st fret. Donʼt worry if it doesn't sound good right away, it will take a little practice to get it right.

The F chord can also be played this way. It is a little harder but means you can play the 5th string which gives you a fuller sound.

Notice the E major shape, F major is basically the E major chord moved up one fret.

Now we need to practice changing chords while keeping a steady strumming pattern. To do this you need to know the open chords really well!

7th Chords

What is a 7th Chord?

Seventh chords are very common chords. They are used a lot in jazz and country music. A 7th chord is simply a basic chord (3 notes) with an extra note (the 7th degree of the root) added in.

The open major 7th chords

This is a new chord to learn. It is played like a D7 chord moved up two strings and your 4th finger on the first string.

Tuning your Guitar

The most common and easiest way to tune your guitar these days is to use an electronic tuner. These cost very little and are a very useful device. However, it is very important that you are able to tune your guitar by ear.

You need to tune the top string in tune (by using a piano or another guitar or pitch pipe) you can then tune the rest of the strings by matching the sound of the strings shown in the diagram above.

The sound from the note played on the 5th fret on the 6th string (thick one) should sound the same as the next string down played open.

The 5th fret on the 5th string should sound the same as the next string down when played open.

This pattern continues until the 3rd string were you play the 4th fret instead of the 5th fret. on the 2nd string you move back up to the 5th fret.

... by ear!

How to Read TAB

TAB or tablature is a method of writing down music played on guitar or bass. Instead of using symbols like in standard musical notation, it uses characters and numbers.

You start out with 6 lines. Each line corresponds to each string of the guitar. The top line is the 1st string (highest pitch string), and the bottom line is the 6th (lowest pitch string). Below is a blank bit of TAB with the string names at the left.

E----------------------------------------------------------------B----------------------------------------------------------------G----------------------------------------------------------------D----------------------------------------------------------------A----------------------------------------------------------------E----------------------------------------------------------------

Numbers are written on the lines to show you where to fret the string with the left hand. If a zero appears, this means play the open string. Like standard musical notation, you read from left to right to find out what order to play the notes. The following piece of TAB would mean play the sequence of notes on the bottom E string by moving up a fret at a time, starting with the open string.

E----------------------------------------------------------------B----------------------------------------------------------------G----------------------------------------------------------------D----------------------------------------------------------------A----------------------------------------------------------------E---0--1--2--3--4--5---------------------------------------------

OK so far ?

Here we have notes being played one at a time. If two or more notes are to be played together, they are written on top of one another, again just like standard notation. In the next example we have a Em chord.

E----0------------------------------------------------------------B----0------------------------------------------------------------G----0------------------------------------------------------------D----2------------------------------------------------------------A----2------------------------------------------------------------E----0------------------------------------------------------------

* Most often TAB will *not* give you any information on the note lengths or the speed of the song. It is usually left up to you to listen to the song to pick up the rhythm.

As a general rule, the spacing of the notes on the TAB should tell you which notes are the long ones, and which are the short and fast ones.

Lesson: Twinkle Twinkle

Try and play the following TAB.

Learn each section, then put them all together to play the complete piece.

NOTE: I have wrote this TAB in a very simple, easy to read format. TAB sometimes looks different but the principle will always be the same (6 lines with numbers on them). Try looking online for TAB of your favorite songs.

The Cadd9 Chord

Cadd9x

Cadd9 uses the top 2 notes from a C major chord and the bottom 2 notes from a G major chord. To learn it play G major and bring you top 2 fingers down a string each keeping the same position.

Because its easy and fast to change to Cadd9 from a G major, its used sometimes instead of a C major chord.
