Bonjour! ¡Hola! Hello! Guten Tag! Ciao!Come travel with us! On behalf of myself and the entire Board of Directors, we want to welcome you to the 23rd annual Great Falls Balloon Festival!

First and foremost, we would like to take this opportu-nity to say THANK YOU to our community as a whole. As you know, the festival has had some particularly dark times during the early planning stages this year. We have been so overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for this great event, helping to get the festival “re-ener-gized”! We would not have been able to help this festival go on without the backing of such a wonderful and gen-erous community, and the financial support brought by the partnerships with other community events, Dempsey Challenge and Liberty Festival.

This year’s “Let’s Travel” theme will feature three special shapes— Aquario the Fishbowl, Jewel the Humming-bird and Planet Earth. In addition to these very special balloons, we will have more than fifteen other hot air balloons to make this another spectacular summer weekend. All of these balloons are the awe-inspiring focal point for this annual festival. Whether you look forward to standing beside balloons inf lating on the field, catching some vibrant photos, watching them launch into the Twin Cities’ skyline, touching down onto

the water in front of the falls, or glowing in the night sky – we cannot wait to have you join us.

In addition to the balloons, we have a fun-filled weekend with free activities for all ages to enjoy. Go visit “The Riding of RavensBridge” – they will be set up in their medieval encampment at Bonney Park for the weekend. They will be performing demonstrations at various times and locations on both Saturday and Sunday. The ZuZu African Acrobats are making a stop on their Got Talent World Tour 2015 as well! We will continue to have entertainment on stages in Lewiston at Simard-Payne Memorial Park and in Auburn at Festival Plaza, includ-ing live bands, local dancers, cheerleaders and of course Family Fun Day on Sunday. On Saturday morning, the festival parade promises to be even bigger and better than ever before, with over 50 groups participating! All weekend we will have carnival rides, craft and trade booths and even some free giveaways.

Finally, let’s not forget the many, many food offerings provided by our local non-profit organizations. The mission of the festival, for 23 years, has been to provide a major fundraising opportunity for various local non-profit groups. Last year, 35 different organizations raised funds to benefit groups right here in our com-munity. You will find a diverse selection of food and beverages, with something to please everyone’s taste buds.

The Board will be hosting the Pancake Breakfast again this year on Saturday and Sunday mornings under the tent. Come and watch the morning launch and then sit down and enjoy breakfast! Stay after the launch on Sunday and watch the L-A Bridge Run, final 5K of the

Triple Crown, participants pass through Simard-Payne Memorial Park.

The festival would not be possible without the efforts of many. Our volunteer Board, committee members, festival volunteers, non-profit groups and the cities of Lewiston and Auburn all contribute endless hours and in-kind services that make this festival weekend happen.

We encourage everyone to remember the mission of the festival and support our local non-profit organizations participating in the festival this year in exchange for a unique and exciting event. If you have the opportunity, say thank you to the many, many volunteers, sponsors, city councilors and local businesses that support this festival. In addition, a special thank you to the land-owners in L/A and the surrounding communities that provide a safe place for our balloons to land.

So come on out and join us for our 23rd annual celebration! Support your community, catch up with friends and neighbors, volunteer, enjoy a wide variety of mouth-watering foods, watch the entertainment and maybe even enjoy a glorious balloon ride!

Sincerely,

Morgan Hamlyn,

PresidentGreat Falls Balloon Festival 2015

ZUZU AFRICAN ACROBATS

Family friendly, high-energy entertainmentBy Dan MaroisSpecial Sections Writer

The ZuZu African Acrobats will bring their high energy performance to the Festival featuring fast pyramid build-ing, limbo, contortion, bottle balancing, tumbling, chair stacks and balancing, and much more all set to African music.

“The five acrobats come from Mombasa, Kenya and have performed together since they were eight years old when they would practice their routines on area beaches for tips from travelers,” said Stephan Huller, their booking agent from World Star International. As youths, they learned from village elders the art of traditional circus performances featured in various celebrations and festivities.

“Their performances are similar to what would be shown in a nightclub to entertain tourists at the many resorts in Kenya,” said Huller.

For the past 20 years, the troupe has intrigued audiences with its unique performing elements including tumbling, dance, juggling, and aerial ballet oftentimes compared to another performing troupe, Cirque du Soleil. “They have performed worldwide in such places as Canada, Germany and Italy and they are currently touring in the United States,” said Huller. “They perform at many colleges and schools as well as festi-vals, theaters, and other entertainment venues.”

Together they will entertain while educating the audience about African culture, language and lifestyle. All acts are

There’s an exciting international performing troupe coming to Maine for this year’s Great Falls Balloon Festival on Aug. 21 to 23.

Advertising Supplement to the Sun Journal, Lewiston, Maine, Sunday, August 16, 20156 GREAT FALLS BALLOON FESTIVAL

The experience that our visitors get at the Great Falls Balloon Festival is rare in the ballooning world. At most festivals, spectators are not allowed in the area where balloons are launching. However, this up-close-and-personal venue also poses some challenges. Our main launch site is small. Our vis-iting balloons are huge. Our visitors are smitten. But our pilots and crews need space. A lot of it. They also need to be able to see and hear each other to keep themselves and everyone else on the field safe. Maintaining a safe environment is a top prior-ity; and it is crucial to the future of the festival. Here are some things to keep in mind when visiting the festival:

THE BIG 4:• Don’t Smoke. Our visiting balloons carry tanks full of

propane gas. Due to the fire hazard created by the use of

propane gas, as well as the risk of damage to the balloon envelopes, smoking is prohibited.

• Don’t bring your dog. Or your cat. Or bird. Or snake. With the exception of service animals, NO PETS of any kinds are allowed on festival grounds.

• Don’t bring your wheels. This include bikes, skateboards, scooters, roller skates and—yes—unicycles. The level of foot traffic on the walkway around the park is very high, espe-cially at launch time.

• Don’t drink. No alcohol is allowed on festival grounds.

LAUNCH TIMESLaunches are scheduled for 6 am and 6 pm throughout the weekend and are always weather permitting. This includes wind and clouds as well as more obvious conditions like rain and lightning. In the event of questionable conditions, our Bal-loonmeister will wait as long as they can in hopes of a turn for the better. However, a launch decision may be delayed by up to an hour if weather conditions are changing. Ideally, the bal-loons will launch by 6:45 p.m. This time frame provides a fair ride for our passengers and gets everyone back on the ground before we run out of daylight.

LAUNCH SITESSimard-Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston is our main launch site. Edward Little High School in Auburn will also act as an additional launch site for some regular shape balloons.

ON THE MICLive stage performances will end at 5 p.m. and will resume following the launch. As the balloons arrive on the field, visi-tors will learn about each balloon and pilot from our on-field announcer.

SPECIAL SHAPESSpecials fly only in the morning. At our evening launches, the specials will inflate and stay at the field to glow for the crowd. They are large, complex and hard to pack up in the dark.

TETHERED RIDESWhen the weather permits, tethered rides are available for $10–$15/person. Tethered rides typically begin in the late afternoon (exact time is dependent on temps and/or winds).

MOONGLOWThis ground-level light show is a crowd favorite! Following the Saturday evening launch (usually around 9 p.m.) some of our visiting balloons will return to the field, inflate and light their burners for a ground-level light show.

BE READY TO RELOCATEIf you’ve staked out a spot in the center of the field … you prob-ably won’t get to stay there. At launch time, if you’re on the main field at Simard-Payne Memorial Park, there is a good pos-sibility that you will be asked to move; and maybe more than once. Additionally, please give balloon vehicles the right-of-way when they are entering/exiting the field. We also ask that you take care not to step on the fabric of the balloon envelope when the balloons are on the ground.

CHASING BALLOONSChasing balloons can be an exciting way to participate in the festival. Keep your focus on the road if you spot a balloon while driving. Pull off to the side of the road to watch the balloon safely. And be careful not to drive or walk onto private property without the landowner’s permission.

We ask that everyone involved in the festival—including spectators, volunteers and balloonists—be respectful of land-owners’ rights and responsibilities.

Advertising Supplement to the Sun Journal, Lewiston, Maine, Sunday, August 16, 2015 GREAT FALLS BALLOON FESTIVAL 11

Memorable and colorful, special-shape balloons to be featured at this year’s festivalBy Donna RousseauSpecial Sections Writer

The skies over Lewiston-Auburn will welcome special-shape balloonists, Patty Lewis and Doug Grimes, all the way from Albuquerque,

New Mexico, to this year’s 2015 Great Falls Balloon Festival.

Though they have been to Maine before, it is the couple’s first time visiting the Twin Cities along the river and, according to Patty, the Festival has been on their bucket list.

“A lot of our friends come to this festival and we’ve have always wanted to come. Finally, we were able to work it out!”

Their Maine must-do checklist includes visiting the coastal beaches and indulging in some lobster. “It’s all about the lobster,” laughed Patty.

She and Doug have been ballooning since 1978. Ownership of their first balloon, “Out of the Blue,” headed a parade of at least 12 hot air balloons over the course of their ballooning careers.

Making their Lewiston-Auburn debuts at this year’s festival will be “Planet Earth,” “Jewel the Hummingbird” and “Aquaria the Fishbowl.” The three will command an enormous piece of down-town’s skyline. Planet Earth measures 90,000-cubic feet, reaching skyward 70 feet; Aquaria boasts 105,000-cubic feet and is 90 feet in height.

Colorfully spectacular, Jewel weighs in at 750 pounds, 110,000-cubic feet, and 100 feet tall. Patty admitted Jewel takes double the launch space in width and length to prepare her for inflation and it takes an hour or more to pack her away.

Patty and Doug will work closely with their crew including Rick Hunt, and Steve and Mary Dibble to bring these three balloons to life throughout the festival weekend.

Choosing a favorite balloon, Patty said, while Jewel is a striking sight for sheer size alone, Earth is a crowd-pleaser. She said, “People love Earth; it’s a favorite. We’ve had older gentlemen come up and tell us stories of the places they had seen in the war, naming friends they had lost [in the different places on the planet]; they have tears in their eyes and so does Doug.” She added, “We’ve done a lot of work with Wounded Warrior Projects.”

Planet Earth is also unique for its artistic significance. Interestingly, the balloon was designed specifically from the images of the planet gathered from space by NASA for the Big Blue Marble Project. Those images can be seen at visableearth.nasa.gov.

Of their flying experiences, choosing one memorable favorite is nearly impossible for both Patty and Doug. With 5,00-plus flights, every imaginable special occasion, and 12,000 passengers includ-ing celebrities and notable guests, there are too many memories from which to choose.

Doug recalled an unusual customer with a chuckle. “One gentle-man used to hire me to bring his dogs for a ride twice a year!”

As the skies over LA come alight with color during the 2015 Great Falls Balloon Festival, keep an eye out for Patty, Doug, and their crew, as their balloons take center stage.

While your feet are firmly planted on the ground, be sure to check out their balloon concession at the launching field featuring T-shirts printed with their balloons, jewelry, ornaments, and assorted balloon memorabilia. It’s sure to be a show worth remembering.

performed to traditional African beats and the show is family friendly especially for youngsters. The ZuZu African Acrobats have been featured on America’s Got Talent, The Late Show with David Letterman, three Super Bowls and NBA half-time shows, and at numerous theme parks and state fairs. They have also been honored by performing at the White House.

Audience reviews from past performance say that “these five performers are absolutely amazing” and “this show never ceases to entertain.”

“This will be their first time performing in Maine,” said Huller, noting that the performers reside in Florida and California.

To keep Jones from floating away too soon, Steve Bradbury, right, and Sarah Dalton, center, both from Freeport, kept their weight on his seat before take-off.
