Foreword

The 4th Balkan Mining Congress is continuing a successful tradition of mining congresses, which began six years ago in Varna, Bulgaria. The 2nd congress was held in Belgrade, Ser-bia in 2007. The 3rd congress was organized two years ago in Izmir, Turkey.

On this occasion we should remember our colleagues who, ten years ago, already began thinking about the possibilities of connecting mining experts from the Balkan or the entire region of South East Europe, respectively. Among those experts were dr. Tzolo Voutov, prof. dr. Vekoslav Ivanov, prof. dr. Slobodan Vujić and prof. dr. Peter Daskalov. It was at their initiative that the BALKANMINE association was formed in 2004, joining ten member states. This year another state will join the association, the Republic of Slovakia.

This year‘s Balkan Mining Congress, the 4th in a row, will take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Doc. Dr. Milan Medved, the Manager of the Velenje Coal Mine, took over a very demand-ing task of organizing the event. The Velenje Coal Mine is also the general sponsor of the 4th Balkan Mining Congress. On this occasion the Balkanmine Congress Coordina-tion Committee extends its sincere thanks to the general sponsor and especially to the President of the Organizational Committee, Doc. Dr. Milan Medved, who knew how to encourage his colleagues to successfully prepare this important event.

I would also like to extend sincere thanks to the Slovenian Chamber of Engineers, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering – Mining Department, the Slovenian Min-ing Association of Engineers and Technicians and to the Association of Engineers and Technicians of Velenje Coal Mine for their support.

We can say that the layout and the vividness of the collection of mining publications, including this year‘s publication, enables a wider circle of experts to discover and ac-quaint themselves with the field that is very important in threading our way in the years to come.

We believe that many will see the 4th Balkan Mining Congress as an opportunity to make new ties and to participate in quality discussions and exchange opinions. We also stay deeply convinced that the mining profession in this part of Europe is an important factor in finding our way out of the crisis and that the next, the 5th Congress will take place in a more scientific research friendly atmosphere.

On behalf of the Balkan Editorial Board I wish for a lot of creative energy in both present-ing and listening the contributions to all the participants aswell as to have a pleasant time.

Good luck!

MSc. Marjan HUDEJPresident of the Balkanmine Congress Coordination Committee

Foreword

This year, Slovenia will be the host of the 4th International Balkan Mining Congress, the Balkanmine. It offers our country and the businesses which are active in this field an excellent opportunity to present their top achievements, findings, and the technology which is the result of their own expertise in engineering. It is also the opinion of the in-ternational experts, that Velenje Coal Mine represents a reference point for underground coal mining in Europe.

The people of southeastern Europe, much like other regions in Europe, have once again become aware of the competitive advantage of local coal. They are therefore continuing to invest in the modernization of the production of coal, which is expected to become one of the key sources of energy in the coming decades. There is an estimated reserve of billions of tons of coal, which offer a great competitive advantage for the region, as well as safety and stability for the electricity supply.

In front of you is a comprehensive collection of one hundred articles, written by 223 authors and coauthors from sixteen different countries. This fact delights us, as it affirms the progress that has been made in mining, as well as the fact that the mining industry has not given up the search for new pathways of innovation despite the current eco-nomic crisis.

The content of the 4th Balkan Mining Congress includes twelve thematic fields that have brought together many top professionals. The materials of the collection present a ma-jor contribution in the development of the mining industry and science. From the be-ginning, the collection has been designed to attract findings from other, complementary areas that supplement and extend the research in mining.

Slovenian companies – and increasingly among them Velenje Coal Mine – have been exporting their experience and knowledge to foreign markets, which has been helpful in opening new opportunities in business. The investments in developing our own tech-nologies and educating our staff have contributed to the fact that we can now market our extensive knowledge in mining in several different projects and, in this way, expand operations outside the borders of our country. These are certainly good prospects for the further business collaboration of Slovenia with both other European countries and with countries in other parts of the world. Similar projects are a welcome addition to other Slovenian products which are entering the progressively demanding foreign mar-ket.

We are all well aware that our successes would not be possible without the help of our diligent and devoted colleagues. Therefore, I would like to thank everyone who has in any way contributed to the organization of this congress. Thank you to the whole team and to everyone individually.

Good Luck!

Doc. Dr. Milan MEDVEDPresident of the Balkanmine Congress Organizing Committe

COAL MINING MUSEUM OF SLOVENIA

Experience the adventure in the underground worldPrepare yourself for an adventure like never before. Visit the Coal mining museum of Slovenia in Velenje, which is one of the most popular museums in Slovenia. The Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia in velenje is certainly one of the most exciting and recognizable tourist destinations in the Šaleška valley. It is the result of work of many generations of Slovenian miners and it represents a very interesting way of cooperation with the still working coal Mine velenje with an annual production of around 4 million tons of coal and coal mining tradition that has lasted since 1875.

In the company of our guides you will experience. • a unique 180 m deep descent with the old mining elevator from 1888. • an exploration of 3 km of underground tunnels and 9000 m² of exhibition space. • a multimedia story about the beginnings of the coal mining in Slovenia - 16 multivi-

sion shows in several languages and 36 scenes from the life of a coal miner. • a simulation of a mining accident and a blasting operation in the coal mine. • a coal miner’s brunch in the deepest dining room in Slovenia. • modern coal mining methods. • a ride with the underground railway.

In the upper part of the museum you can explore. • an exhibition of the development of coal mining from the fi rst coal fi ndings until

today’s unique and world-famous Velenje mining exploitation method. • the history of the velenje coal mine. • a coal miner’s apartment before 1930. • the black and white wardrobe. • the legend of the “jump over leather apron”. • a mineral collection and a museum gift shop.

VELENJE COAL MINE

The Velenje Coal Mine operates on the largest Slovenian coal deposit and on one of the thickest known coal layers in the world. In 136 years of operation of the coal mine, more than 225 million tonne of lignite have been extracted from the lignite layers of thickness up to 165 m.The first mentioning of the deposits dates back to the 18th century, the first drillings were record-ed in 1875 and the first opening of a mine in 1887. Already in the year 1905, the first lignite-fired thermal power plant was built near the coal mine. Coal production in the Šaleška dolina valley was at its peak after the World War II when the demand for coal increased exponentially. The quantities of the produced coal kept increasing until mid-1990s. During this period, the Ve-lenje Coal Mine provided more than three quarters of the entire amount of Slovenian coal. Modern mechanisation and their own mining method were barely sufficient to satisfy the entire demand for coal. In mid-1980, the Velenje Coal Mine reached the peak of annual production of coal, i.e. 5 million tonne. The principal activity of the company is coal production. Other activities: mining, mechanical and electrical design of underground facilities and opencast mining, production of all types of under-ground facilities, drilling, geomechanical research, mine surveying, hydrogeological and techno-logical services, education services. In the year 1947, the Velenje Coal Mine introduced the Velenje mining method as a result of years of work of numerous mining experts. The method is still being developed and improved, pre-dominantly in the sense of increase of production from one coal face, utilisation rate of the layer, employee safety, humanisation of work and economy. Thanks to its specific properties and high productivity, the method is globally known as the “Velenje mining method”. The Velenje mining method is an internationally protected patent that has been proven to be the most effective meth-od for extracting thick coal seams. The specialty of the Velenje mining method is the procedure introduced in the last decade: the procedure of controlled winning of roof coal by “pouring” over roof supports into the Longwall chain conveyor which provides very high production capacity with an extremely high level of safety and great economy. Current mining results are comparable with the top results in Europe. The Velenje mining method was the reason for the award presented in 2007 to the company Premogovnik Velenje by the Slovenian Chamber of Engineers: an award for innovation and innovative approach in engineering business. The technological progress in the Velenje Coal Mine offers good opportunities for economic coop-eration with other countries; particularly where there is a need for introduction of new technolo-gies (cooperation with coal mines in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Macedonia, Turkey, India, Asia-Pacific region). To this markets they bring knowledge, experience, equipment, programmes etc.During the 136-year history of operation, the Velenje Coal Mine Group has developed, besides coal production, numerous other activities - both within the main company and in the associated companies. Today, these activities comprise a wide range of products and services through which the entire group expands its business operations. The Premogovnik Velenje Group employs nu-merous co-workers of different professions, with great experience and knowledge, which provide a guarantee that the sales programmes of the companies are of truly good quality and directed to the needs and desires of a wide range of customers. By doing so, they are accomplishing their long-term strategy of reducing the dependence
