Launched in 2005 Bali Style magazine has been
promoting Bali’s (and Indonesia’s) best in interior
design, home decor, furniture, luxurious villas and
accessories for around five years. We’ve brought
you some amazing travel features from around
Indonesia and the region. And we’ve had a lot of
fun doing it. We thank all of our readers and loyal
sponsors for your support.
As we come up to our fifth birthday regular read-
ers will notice a few changes in the design of the
magazine. Media Makara
the parent company of
Bali Style Magazine, has
got a new logo which
reflects the true cultural
roots of the ‘Makara’ - a
mythical creature with
the head of an elephant,
which was used exten-
sively in ancient stone
temple architecture of
Indonesia’s Hindu-Bud-
dhist kingdoms.
We’ve also freshened up
the design of the maga-
zine. We’ve rolled our
‘Good buys’ and ‘Pot-
pourri’ departments into
one combined grab-bag
called ‘Gado-gado’. One
of Indonesia’s favourite
dishes, Gado-gado is
fresh, delicious and all
mixed up, so what better name for our miscel-
laneous department where you’ll find everything
from book reviews, to the latest product, shop
and resort news from around Bali.
Of course we also have a swag of great fea-
ture stories. We talk to Desmond James – head
“sourcerer” at Sourcing Bali the original and best
sourcing agent for commercial and private clients,
as well as offering interior design and shipping
services. We take a relaxing time-out at the luxu-
rious Kayumanis in the leafy surrounds of Ubud,
then continuing our travels, we take a weekend
stopover in Singapore where some exciting new
developments are afoot. We chat to Stephane
Sensey, a remarkable French designer creating
and exporting vintage French Louis XV and Louis
XVI furniture, lighting and accessories, right here
in Bali. We visit Creative Design a brand new fur-
niture and accessories outlet on the Sunset road
with some beautiful products that are in high de-
mand. We talk to Jacques
Hugen the dynamic cre-
ator of H+R whose phi-
losophy is to inspire the
“huge and rich” poten-
tial in all his workers and
channel that into creat-
ing beautiful furniture...
we think he’s succeeded
quite nicely. Then round-
ing out a bumper issue
we visit the spectacular
Villa Babar, and do a
run-down of 10 of our fa-
vourite Bali shops in the
Bali Style Top 10! Don’t
worry if you didn’t make
the cut this time, we’ll be
doing a Bali Style Top 10
Furniture Shops in the
next issue so look out
for that one.
We hope you enjoy read-
ing this issue of Bali Style Magazine as much as
we enjoyed bringing it to you.
Happy shopping or as they say here Selamat
Berbelanja!

dream. She has written for several publications including The Jakarta Post, Hello Bali, Fine Restaurants & Villas, The Yak, Asia Sentinel, Bali Plus, i Style and Tropical Homes. Her Jakarta Post in-terview with Anandi Krishna – ‘No Run of the Mill Spiritual Guru’ – was reprinted in 2007 in his book: Voice of Indonesia.
Rachel Greaves
Rachel’s childhood dream was to live on a tropical island and become a writer, but she followed the careers advice she’d been given at school and spent 19 years working for a corporate company in the UK before making the momentous decision, in 1998, to change her life. She is now living her dream in Bali, writing for magazines and guidebooks.

Early mapping of Southeast AsiaThe Epic Story of Seafarers,
Adventurers, and Cartographers who
First Mapped the Regions between
China and India
By Thomas Suarez Published by
Periplus Editions
This is a work of epic scholarship
almost as monumental as the
voyages of the ancient “seafarers,
adventurers and cartographers”
which it describes. Beginning with
the earliest known documentations
of the region of Southeast Asia, or the lands
east of India’s Ganges River, the book documents the
idea of Southeast Asia as a geographical and cosmological construct
up until the dawn of the modern era. In the occidental eyes of ancient Europeans
“the east was the source of silks, spices and other exotica. It was the environs of
Paradise, the place of the original garden...It was the horizon from whence the sun
rose...and the source of much philosophical speculation.” In the same meticulous
detail as many of the evocative maps presented, Suarez explores the development
of human knowledge about this most fascinating region of the world, using maps as
a medium of discourse. A formidable achievement.

The Tropical HouseCutting Edge Design in the Philippines
By Elizabeth V. Reyes Photography by Luca
Invernizzi Tettoni Published by Tuttle
It would appear that the Tropical
Contemporary style of architecture and
interior design is becoming “increasingly
prevalent in many house-proud Filipinos’ new
homes”. As Reyes explains in her introduction
“the style manifests itself in a white, modern,
open-plan layout, where wide spaces paved in
sleek stone or lined with rich-grained hardwood are warmed
up and “softened” by comfortable furniture, cultural accessories and
personal art accents.” The images from veteran Italian interior photographer
Luca Invernizzi are, as always, executed with surgical precision presenting these
25 stunning homes in beautiful detail, and combining seamlessly with Reyes
expert commentary and detailed captioning about design elements, architectural
backgrounds and details about the various owners of these bespoke tropical
modern residences. Reyes nod of recognition to the origins of the Asia modern
style which “first evolved” in Bali will be satisfying to many local architects and
designers. A joy to have on the coffee table and dip into when inspiration beckons...

Book Reviews
Asian ResortsBy Akihiko Seki Published by Tuttle
This is one of those books that makes you
think “Well doesn’t that guy just have the best
job in the world...” Writer and photographer
Akihiko Seki has travelled around to many
of the best resorts in Asia with his camera
and notebook and produced the text and
photos that fill this mouth-watering 190-page
volume. From The United Arab Emirates
to Indonesia, and quite a few countries in
between, including enigmatic Bhutan, the
Maldives, Malaysia, Japan and Thailand, the
author has catalogued some of the best of
Asia’s luxury properties from yoga resorts in
the hills of Bhutan to stilted villas over blue
lagoon waters in the Maldives, from Onsen
retreats in Japan to colonial hill stations in
the Cameron highlands. Representing Bali
are the sumptuous Amankila, Ayana Resort
& Spa [formerly the Ritz-Carlton], Bagus Jati,
Begawan Giri, Mimpi Resort, The Oberoi and
the Royal Pita Maha.

The Banda Islands, a seemingly
insignificant island chain in eastern
Indonesia, have a monumental position
in Indonesia’s colonial history as the
original spice islands. However they also
have a burgeoning reputation as a place
of pristine natural beauty, especially
under the waves, where fish and corals
grow in kaleidoscopic abundance.

spectacular.

Dear Bali Style,
I enjoyed your last issue. The magazine keeps getting better and better. But I must protest on one point. In your book review of Javanese Antique Furniture and Folk Art, the first sentence is inac-curate. It reads, «This book is like the catalogue to an exhibition that you will never see.»
At ICON Asian Arts, our gallery in Seminyak, we actually held an exhibition of the furniture and folk art in the book, lasting from 3 December 2009 to 19 January 2010. The exhibition opened with a launch party, at which the publisher Didier Mil-let, the author Bruce Carpenter, and the Javanese collector James Tirtoprodjo were present.
The exhibition was enjoyed by many people, as these works of art are even more fascinating «in person» than they are on the pages of the splendid book about them. We hope you can join us for our next soirée, and please pop in anytime for a drink and a tour of our ever-changing selection of antiquities, works of art, ancient jewelry, textiles and tribal artefacts.
Cheers,
Susi JohnstonFounding PrincipalMACAN TIDUR/ICON ASIAN ARTS
Dear SusiThank you for your letter and for bringing our attention to that error. We apologize for the inaccuracy. We are delighted to hear that there was an exhibition of the magnificent furniture and folk art contained in Bruce Carpenter and James Tirtoprodjo’s beautiful book. For photos and story see “High Life” on page 70. We would be delighted to attend your next event and take a tour of your gal-lery’s collection of antiquities, jewelery and artworks. Set in a romantic grove of dancing coconut trees in the gardens of
the Kayumanis Jimbaran resort, a select group of invitees from the
travel and media sectors were privileged to enjoy the fine hospital-
ity offered by the Kayumanis Group in appreciation for their support
over the previous year. Small groups were personally escorted on a
tour around the property to inspect the design and décor of selected
villas as well as Tapis Restaurant. Including a preview of a private
villa set up for a romantic dinner with a floating platform over the
pool adorned with tropical flowers and flickering candles. A spa cor-
ner under the trees invited guests to sample a 10-minute replenishing
shoulder massager by the therapists of Kayumanis Spa. However, the
main agenda was to present a series of awards to the best supporters
within each travel market category. The list of winners included; HIS,
APA Tour, Bali Kami, PACTO, Best Tour, Look Asia, Go Vacation, wed-
dingku.com and checkinbali. It was an evening of wining and dining
featuring superb Indonesian and International cuisine prepared by
the Kayumanis F&B team.

On February 26th, Tarita Studio held its first art for charity fundraiser:
‘Blowing Smoke’. All of the fabulous art up for auction was donated
by recognized artists such as Jean Francois Fichot, Louis Ostenrik,
James Morgan, Charlie Coe, Ridwan Rudianto, Aditya Surya Taruna,
Francois Seurin and many others. All the proceeds from the sale of art-
works will go to Narayan Seva Children’s home in Kerobokan, Singa-
raja which currently provides housing for approximately 45 children.
They have recently had to turn away children, because their current
living situation is already at full capacity. With the nearly $3,000 USD
which has been raised so far, they’ll be able to construct a new build-
ing and thus, house more children in need. The evening was a huge
success with over 200 guests. Everyone enjoyed the open bar, deli-
cious canapés and sate from a local vendor who carried in his cart off
the street into Tarita Studio and grilled up fresh sate for all the guests!
There’s a virtual Facebook site which is still open for bids. Just search
for ‘Blowing Smoke’.

It’s amazing the things Sourcing Bali can find for
you. Their talent at sourcing almost amounts to
sorcery. Take, for example, the time Desmond
and his team were asked to source “An entire
room walled with snake skin panels… made
from hundreds of real snakes!” recalls Desmond.
“Yuk,” [as he puts it] it may have been, but source
it they did. And that’s what makes them the best
in the business.
It would also be fair to say that Sourcing Bali
is perhaps the best known sourcing company
here in Bali. For those few who haven’t heard of
them [although where you’ve been hiding we
just don’t know!], Desmond describes themselves
as “A very diverse little company with lots of
different divisions and services:
[a] We help commercial and private buyers to
purchase [almost] anything from Bali and often
Java.
[b] We design and produce hotel accessories
[tissue boxes, bins, etc].
[c] We have our own freight division [RIM
CARGO] to ship anything we’ve sourced to
wherever you may be in the world.
And [d] NEW this year… we’re just about to launch
BESPOKE – our interior design service… You
heard it here first! BESPOKE is already busy with
two large commercial and high profile projects
in Bali, plus residential properties in Bali, Puerto
Viarta – Mexico, and Hamilton Island. BESPOKE
designs it; Sourcing Bali sources it; and Rim Cargo
ships it!”
How did such an all-round resourceful company
come to be in existence? “Taking a leap of faith
in 2000, I jumped from the Hotel industry into
running my own business,” recalls Desmond. “It
was the most exciting, scariest, most satisfying
thing I have ever done. I hit the road running
and have never looked back.” Of course, running
a company such as Sourcing Bali doesn’t come
without its challenges. “Indonesian tax and trade

laws – and getting someone in the government who
understands them/can explain them/make sense of
them – is probably the biggest challenge we face in our
line of business,” agrees Desmond. “It really is a mess,”
he frankly admits.
In spite of the challenges, Desmond clearly loves his
job. His team being the thing “I love most about my job.
No contest!” he reveals. That, and the fact that the job
they are doing is never dull. An average day begins “at
the office at 7.30am, emailing and setting agenda for
the team’s daily activities. I then conduct the 8.30am
briefing with the RIM CREW, and a 9am briefing with
the Sourcing Bali crew. We then allocate cars and
drivers to be with clients, place orders, check orders,
quality control orders… we’ve got people on the road
every day!” Yep, “It’s a pretty crazy place,” laughs
Desmond. “We’ve got over 80 staff to co-ordinate;
five trucks; five cars; three bikes… We also have a
strict policy of same day/next day response and our
customers have high expectations of us.”
“It was the most exciting, scariest, most satisfying thing I have ever done. I hit the road running and have never looked back...”

When Desmond and his team aren’t crazy busy
here in Bali, they’re crazy busy somewhere
else in the world. “Our orders go to all corners
of the globe, while we ourselves spend a lot
of time travelling to the Maldives, Australia,
Singapore, Fiji, Dubai, Riyadh and Mauritius for
exhibitions, sales calls, meeting clients…” Clients
which include a handful of “Saudi Princesses;
retailers and wholesalers [for homewares, art,
furniture, garments, garden supplies]; hotels;
spas; and private home owners all over the
world – anyone who needs quality products,”
reveals Desmond.
Their clients and orders may be vastly varying,
but one thing that remains constant is the
quality of service Desmond and the Sourcing
Bali team offer. “We were the first, and we’re
still the best,” reveals Desmond. “Our level of
service and attention to detail set us miles in
front. Also, my crew has a great sense of style
and quality; offers great customer service; and
we’re 100% transparent – all of our vehicles are
branded, all my staff proudly wear uniforms,
no matter what position, so including me, and
you can recognise our crew anywhere.”
Organised so[u]rcery, that’s what it is.
“Our orders go to all corners of the globe, while we ourselves spend a lot of time travelling to the Maldives,
Australia, Singapore, Fiji, Dubai, Riyadh and Mauritius for exhibitions, sales calls, meeting clients…”
Sourcing secretsWhat are the most common requests you receive? “To fix someone else’s problems. We get lots of customers who come to us after their ‘other agents’ screw up, run away, don’t perform. I’m proud to say we have a great reputation for always getting the job done, and getting it done right. My team is amazing!”What are the most difficult things to find?“Sustainable timbers and good quality finishes.”What has been your most exciting sourcing discovery?“I’m excited by anything new, creative, innovative. It can be a glass maker who’s able to make custom colours; a resin maker using new techniques; a furniture maker using new timber finishes.”

Stephane Sensey does so much more than just rehash the same
tired old wooden products that line the streets, gangs and
backroads of Bali. His interior design vision is, instead, entirely
unique and specific. We spoke to Stephane for the inside scoop
on what makes the furniture, art and other interior accessories he
produces so special.
Bali Style Magazine [BSM]: Tell us about the very beginnings of the
company: [a] how, [b] when and [c] why did the idea for Stephane
Sensey first come up?
Stephane Sensey [SS]: Way back in 1969 my father, Jean Michel
Sensey, opened up the first Sensey show room in Biarritz, France... I
grew up surrounded by interior magazines and following my dad
around during the fairs in Paris. I then moved on to assisting him
at the factory and show room during my vacations. From there it
was a natural progression that I would decide to create my own
brand and continue his work.
BSM: So how did you come to be in Bali?
SS: I first visited Bali in 2005 when I came here during summer
with some friends. It was only a few months before I came back
by myself with the idea of moving to this Island and starting a new
life!
BSM How would you describe your company and what you do to
somebody who has never heard of you before?
SS: Our aim is to produce and export vintage [Louis XV, Louis XVI]
French style furniture, lighting and accessories. We also take on
projects doing the interiors of private homes and villas, as well as
promoting art work in our show room .
BSM: What do you love most about your work?
SS: Without doubt the creative part is definitely what I love most
about my job.

Gone are the days when ‘Bali furniture’ meant just one thing: teak, recycled teak and more teak. With a dash of
imagination, exquisite vintage vision and a long family history in furniture and interior design, Stephane Sensey is the man to go to when you want your home to reflect
serious style.

38 BALI STYLE Vol.6 No.2 2010
BSM: What are the biggest challenges you face in your line of business?
SS: Making sure we maintain and, indeed, keep on improving on, the
high quality and originality of our products. We also constantly strive to
ensure great service and it’s a daily challenge to keep to our production
time frame.
BSM What does an average day in the life of Stephane Sensey hold? Tell
us about some of the day to day tasks you have to get through?
SS: Most of the time in the morning I spend few hours in our showroom
organising the daily work. From there I move on to spend the afternoon
in my warehouse in Sanur where I follow the production and work on
new finishings. Around 5pm I usually return to the shop to work with
my assistant – often staying as late as 8pm!
BSM: What sets you apart from the many other design/creative
companies here in Bali?
SS: A style which is uniquely our own.
BSM: Do you have any designs/products that you are particularly proud
of?
SS: I really am particularly proud of our lighting collection. It’s a collection
most of which I created working together with my dad.
BSM Who is the creative force behind your various designs? Do you
design them all yourself or do you source some products, and if so from
where?
SS: I am solely in charge for the creative part of the Stephane Sensey
collection at the moment. Most of my designs originate within my own
imagination, but I do also source some products at fairs or during my
travels, whether business or leisure trips.
This Page: Louis XV chair and sitting room display at Stephane Sensey’s impressive showroom. Classic style with stone bust, tall desk lamps a stunning combination.
BSM: Who do you most admire in the design
world? Why?
SS: Le Corbusier [a Swiss-French architect
and designer], for his complete work and
his futurist vision.
BSM: What would you say sells the best at
your own company?
SS: Our collections of lighting and chairs
are very popular.

Alternatively, if you choose to travel by road, you will
experience an unforgettable introduction to Balinese life,
passing villages, temples and markets as you are driven
along pot-holed country lanes, negotiating causeways
and crossing rivers within wooded valleys. Finally, a
simple track, winding through the gently swaying fields
of rice, will bring you to an exquisite dwelling standing
sentinel over the Indian Ocean. Welcome to Villa Babar!
Indeed, Villa Babar is an extraordinary journey, which
continues after you arrive and stays with you long
after you have left. The building is an architectural
masterpiece, crafted in creamy-white Batu Jogya stone,
and designed to blend into the environment rather than
compete with the spellbinding 360 degree vista that
surrounds it. Under the serene gaze of Mt Batukaru, Bali’s
second highest mountain, rising from the foothills just 20
kilometres away, Villa Babar is big, bold and beachfront-
beautiful, perched on a bluff 13 metres above the sea.
A large reflective pond presided over by a giant Buddha
heralds the villa, which is a two storey, pincer-shaped
edifice linked to a single storey guest wing. The building
comprises an open-sided living room, an air-conditioned
lounge with a pool table, a home theatre, a dining room,
feature kitchen, and six air-conditioned bedrooms,
including a master suite and a family room, all with
ensuite bathrooms, safes, and iPod docks. The gorgeous
gardens include some hidden areas, while the front
garden presents a stunning 27 x 11 metre swimming pool
with a shallow shelf. The eye boggling view, meanwhile,
encompasses mountains, rice fields, the Indian Ocean
and a windswept beach of glistening black sand, as well
as a coastal panorama that extends all the way down

to Uluwatu on the southwest extremity of the Bukit
Peninsula. On a clear day you can see Java; to the east you
can watch the sunrise behind Mt Agung, and to the west
the sunsets are astonishing. The beaches are completely
devoid of tourists and it is only the locals who can be seen
fishing, walking or playing football on the sand. Staying
here is a voyage into an almost untouched Bali, where
nature and culture coincide, while the villa itself adds an
injection of 21st century technology combined with five-
star service, luxury and comforts.
The interiors of Villa Babar are an extension of the
journey, with each bedroom portraying a theme inspired
by the Indonesian culture, showcasing a panel, for
example, from a traditional house in Toraja, Sulawesi,
or artefacts from Borneo’s legendary headhunters, the
Dayak tribesmen, who inhabit Kalimantan’s deep interior
highlands. Throughout the house, the owner shares his
cherished collection of primitive woodcarvings from
Timor, while one corner of the garden is distinguished by
a cluster of enchanting statues from Sumba.
The contemporary furnishings, in natural fabrics and
earth and ocean colours, were custom designed by
Sunbebek, a Bali-based company with an outlet on Jl Raya

everything from furniture, table linens, cushion covers and bed linens to
artwork and antiques. Sunbebek blends traditional techniques with modern
design, with some of the soft furnishings and decorative accessories created
from ‘Kain Endek’, a fabric entirely hand-woven in a Balinese village.
Villa Babar is impeccably managed, with a handpicked team of staff
including personal butlers and a chef who will astound you with his
extensive repertoire and gourmet menu utilising the fresh and organic
produce of this fertile little island, as well as premium imported meats and
cheeses. There is also a carefully-selected collection of wines. Due to its size,
versatility, facilities, impeccable service, and the glorious remote location,
Villa Babar is a dream venue for weddings, events and yoga retreats,
offering that rare chance to escape and enjoy the peace and tranquility.
If you are thinking of travelling in style, one of the exclusive facilities at
Villa Babar is the private licensed helicopter pad. Helicopter transfers can be
arranged to and from the airport, or to places such Nirwana Bali Golf Club
and Ku De Ta, as well as helicopter tours, which provide the opportunity to
fly over parts of Bali and nearby islands that few tourists get to see. The area
surrounding the villa also offers numerous opportunities for exploration
and leisure, ranging from strolls on the beach to getting lost in the beauty of
the countryside. Activities include mountain trekking, golfing, horse riding,
surfing, visiting ancient palaces and temples, meeting the local people and
experiencing the Balinese culture.
Embark on a journey to Villa Babar and, believe me, you will never want it
to end!

The Lion ’sShar e
Always dynamic and proudly user-friendly, the island nation of Singapore has a few new
features that visitors are sure to like...
Text and photography by Adam Fenton
This page: Singapore’s glittering skyline by night, the “Big Durian” Esplanade Theatres on the Bay visible in the foreground, with the giant observation wheel ‘Singapore Flyer’ in the background.
People come to Singapore for a variety of
reasons. For those living in Indonesia there
are the inevitable “visa runs”. With its close
proximity and efficient service Singapore is
the logical choice. There are those who come
for medical services, or weekend getaways,
or shopping trips, or those who are in transit
to destinations farther afield [with its award-
winning airport Singapore is a major regional
hub for air travel]. And there is soon to be yet
another reason for visitors to make the trip...a
bit of Las Vegas style glitz and gaming. But
more about that later...
Whatever the reason you come, Singapore
always offers smooth efficient Customs and
Immigration processing with a free visa issued
on arrival. With its vast armada of taxis you
rarely have difficulty flagging one down and
they are reasonably priced [especially if you
avoid peak hour with its 35% additional fee
– a trip from the airport to town is around
S$20]. Then there’s the MRT with its wide and
growing network of subways, train lines, light
rail and buses. So getting around the island is
easy. The whole experience really is tailored,
engineered, designed and packaged to be
attractive and user-friendly for travellers – and
it works. As a tiny island nation, sandwiched
between Malaysia and Indonesia, it has very
little in the way of natural resources. And yet
through sheer savvy Singapore has evolved
into a thriving regional centre for business,
banking, transport, tourism, medicine and
education.
So what do you do with a few days to explore
Singapore? The options are close to endless. An
obvious starting point is Orchard road with its
plethora of mega-sized shopping malls. The
latest, ION Orchard, is “Singapore’s first multi-
sensory experiential shopping and lifestyle
mall”. Spread out over eight floors [four above
ground, four below] and 66,000 square meters
with over 300 retail shops, ION Orchard [www.
ionorchard.com] has claimed the coveted title
of Singapore’s largest shopping mall. On an
island where shopping is basically a national
sport, that’s quite an accomplishment.
Then there are also plenty of old favourites
to keep you entertained. There are several
excellent museums – the National Museum, the
Asian Civilizations museum and the Peranakan
Museum to name just a few. Type “museums”
into the search engine of the official Singapore
destination website www.yoursingapore.com
and you get no less than 57 different results.
In fact the yoursingapore.com website is an
excellent starting point if you’re unsure about
what to do. It’s bright and engaging and packed
with ideas. The “Red Dot Design Museum”
sounds interesting...
“Through sheer savvy Singapore has evolved into a thriving regional centre
for business, banking, transport, tourism,
medicine and education. ..”
The Singapore Flyer, billed as “a moving
experience at every turn” is a 165-metre-tall giant
observation wheel, larger than the London Eye,
and amongst the world’s largest. Sealed in your
viewing capsule the flyer takes approximately
30 minutes to complete one revolution and
offers “flyers” panoramic views of the Singapore
skyline both day and night. On clear days you
can even see as far as neighbouring countries
Malaysia and Indonesia. For special occasions
romantic dinners for two can even be booked
inside one of the Flyer’s capsules. An interesting
and intimate venue for a proposal perhaps... A
ride on the Flyer is S$29.50 for adults and S$20.65
for kids. Go to www.singaporeflyer.com
While you’re up on the Singapore Flyer you’ll
notice that there’s been quite a lot of work going
on around the Singapore River. The most obvious
addition to the skyline is the enormous 2,500
room “integrated resort” the Marina Bay Sands.
With three towers crowned by the one-hectare
“Sands Skypark”, it looks a little like a giant
three-legged stonehenge with a bulk freighter
parked on top. However it is an impressive and
imposing sight situated right at the entrance to
the Singapore Harbour and dominating the view
from all angles. Obviously it will be scandalously
luxurious with restaurants and bars, lounges and
“always imaginative, innovative and exciting
– Singapore is in many respects the ultimate
traveller’s destination. And we haven’t even
mentioned the food!...”
spas, theatres [The Lion King musical starts
soon] and even a museum. It promises to be a
city within a city “being a model of magnificent
wonder”. The centrepiece of the Marina Bay
Sands will of course be a world-class casino
offering “non-stop casino action” with the
most popular table games and the latest slots
available 24/7. Enticingly the Marina Bay Sands
website declares that “more distinguished play
will earn you recognition in our Paiza Club
which offers the opportunity to luxuriate in
private gaming and unrivaled service in our
spacious upper galleries”. Now doesn’t that just
conjure up images of James Bond-style luxury
and intrigue.
Connecting the Marina Bay Sands to the north
shore of the Singapore river will be a funky
looking “double helix” bridge which will
effectively create a continuous waterfront
boardwalk whereby pedestrians will be able
to walk the perimeter of Marina Bay taking
in all the major sights like Boat Quay, Merlion
Park, The Fullerton Hotel, the Singapore
Flyer, the Stamford Raffles landing site, the
Asian Civilizations museum, the “Big Durian”
Esplanade Theatres on the Bay and many
more.
Not to be left behind, Singapore’s playground
Sentosa island is home to the Resorts World
Integrated Resort, as well as a Universal Studios

Where to Stay
With literally hundreds, possibly thousands, of hotels, hostels, backpackers
and lodges to choose from Singapore has something to suit every budget.
The cheapest option is a bed in a dormitory of one of the many backpacker
lodges which will cost you about S$20 a night. The cheapest hotel/hostel
rooms start at around S$50-60 per night. If you seek a bit more luxury mid
range boutique hotels such as the Perak Hotel in Little India are a delight.
Standard rooms here start from S$128 ranging up to S$158 for a superior and
S$188 for a triple. With an evocative colonial, Peranakan style, Managing
Director Jessie Tong has decorated the 35-room hotel with some lovely
antiques and accessories like colonial era prints, traditional Chinese statues,

More than providing all your furnishing ‘needs’
though, Creative Design has married form and
function, creativity and practicality, innovation
and necessity, to turn even the simplest furniture
needs and requirements into ‘must-have wants’.
We spoke to the team behind Bali’s newest
furniture brand to find out how they do it.
First of all, Creative Design has identified that
these days, more than ever, people are craving
individuality. It’s no longer about ‘keeping up with
the Joneses’, as the saying goes, but rather about
being yourself. “The way of living has changed,”
explains Creative Design owner, Dina Silviana.
“To satisfy people’s increasing desire to be unique,
we need to think creatively and constantly come
up with new designs for the same furniture piece
so that we are always creating something unique
for each of our customers, allowing them to be
different from others.”
Having identified this craving for uniqueness,
Dina then looked at the market in Bali, and “Found
that there still has a great opportunity for furniture
here” – especially unique, one-off design furniture
– “and that products like ours are not that readily
available in this market.”
FabulousFurnitur eNew kid on the block [or on Sunset Road as the case may
be] Creative Design are quickly becoming known as a one-stop shop for all your home furnishing needs.

BALI STYLE Vol.6 No.2 2010 53
Both Pages: Beautiful interiors at the Creative Design showroom on the Sunset Road. Richly upholstered sofas and sleek cabinets and dining settings are the essence of modern tropical design...and in high demand.
Yes, there are plenty of furniture stores here
in Bali – in fact you can’t swing a cat without
hitting one – but few, perhaps one out of
every 20, are creating and selling something
that isn’t just a copycat of the guy next door.
A poor man’s Philippe Starck or Charles Eames.
Creative Design, on the other hand, are firmly
set on a furniture design path all their own.
“The strength of our company lies in the
fact that we have wonderful designers who
are incredibly creative,” agrees Dina. “Our
product is being unique, elegant and, above
all, innovative. We work closely with our
client to meet all their requirements – recently,
for example, we had to create furniture for a
very tall client and everything we designed
was scaled to be taller to fit his size! We love
to really communicate with every customer, to
understand what they need, are considering,
even what they’re worried about, and then try
to provide not only product but solutions.”
What this translates to is a company totally
“dedicated to our customers and clients – we
want them to always feel they have made a
worthy investment.”
Providing the end user with “a complete
decoration concept that includes furniture,
accessories, lighting and rug collections,”
every single piece in the Creative Design
collection, whether on the showroom floor or
custom built for a particular client, “has been
meticulously designed and followed up with
the finest workmanship. We also keep the
‘green’ concept in mind, designing and building
with thoughtfulness to both client and our
environment. We want to be, and are, proud of
every product.”
Aside from wonderful quality products,
Creative Design also prides itself on customer
service. “Each member of our team is
empowered to exert every effort to satisfy our
every customer’s want and needs,” explains
Dina. “Real customer satisfaction is every
employee’s goal. We are also one of the few
shops in Bali that is truly unique without being
ridiculously expensive. We have managed to
produce creative, elegant designs which also
come with an acceptable price.”
With a philosophy like this it’s little wonder
that Creative Design already have a strong
following here on the island with a number
of “repeat customers” rapidly spreading the
word. Don’t be the last to pull up a chair from
Creative Design.

Celebration. . .Discovering Kayumanis Ubud - an intimate hideaway in the green heart of Ubud
Text by Adam Fenton and photography by Adam Fenton

This Page: Privacy and luxury at one of Kayumanis’ spectacular villas set in the green luxuriance of the Ubud hills. Right: romantic setting at the Kayumanis Ubud outdoor restaurant - close to nature.
Upon entering the gate of the private villa
which was to be our home for the next two
days, our butler, Subagiya, took a moment to
conduct a simple ritual. Taking a coconut-wood
ladle he scooped water from a large volcanic-
stone urn and gently rinsed our feet three
times, while softly uttering an incantation to
cleanse «the mind, the body and the soul». It
was a such a simple and touching ceremony
that its effect was instant. Just thinking about
it, I can still feel its calming, soporific effect.
Subagiya encouraged us to repeat the ritual
ourselves each time we entered the villa. And
I instantly agreed to do so. Each time I came
through the gate over the next two days, no
matter how rushed or tired I was, I would stop
and conduct the ritual, and it never failed to
have the same calming effect. And in a way
that sums up the experience of staying at
Kayumanis Ubud. It is a comma in the busy
sentence that is modern life. A calming pause
in the blinding pace of our urban digital-age
existence.
Located in central Bali, Ubud is the virtual
heart of mystical Bali and a nexus of the
island’s art and culture. Characterised by
quaint little village lanes, verdant tropical
forests, picturesque rice fields and rural homes,
Ubud has long been sought out, particularly
by artists, as the ultimate reflective refuge.
Strongly rooted in traditional Hindu customs
it is the ideal venue to witness many of Bali’s
colourful ceremonies and performances.
Reflecting the quaint country lanes of the
surrounding villages, the secluded pathways
and gardens of the villas at Kayumanis Ubud
cascade with an abundance of leafy vegetation.
Ferns, palms, frangipanis, heliconias and
cinnamon trees [from which Kayumanis takes
its name] compete in a riot of natural greenery.
And the rich green moss which seems to
cling to every stone surface, especially the
ubiquitous Hindu-Buddhist statues, creates an
evocative, quintessentially Balinese ambience.
Within the walls of your villa, you are
ensconced in a world where every comfort
has been thought of and carefully catered
for. A private swimming pool and sundeck

Kayumanis Spa
Total relaxation comes in the form of a spa
treatment at the Kayumanis Spa. Crossing
over the resort’s impressive bridge spanning a
yawning valley over an offshoot of the Ayung
river, you arrive at the secluded treatment
pavilions of the spa. Choosing from a menu
of massage therapies and packages, we opted
for the Relaxing Ritual, a 120-minute “overall
indulgence with a nurturing treatment that
pays attention to every part of the body.”
The ritual involved a therapeutic massage “to
optimize energy levels” and a rice flour and
frangipani body scrub to revive tired skin and
stimulate circulation, followed by a luxurious
soak in the enormous bath tub, lovingly
prepared with foaming bubbles and rose petals
arranged in the shape of a love heart.
It really is the attention to detail that so

Well secluded from the sometimes-bustling centre

The saying normally goes ‘You can never
be too thin or too rich’, but one look at the
furniture produced by H+R and you know
that huge and rich is really the way to go when
it comes to furnishing your home.
And that’s even before Jacques has explained
the philosophy behind his company’s name.
“We get all kinds of different reactions to our
name,” reveals Jacques. “But for myself the
name is more about the huge and rich potential
within every person. It is our responsibility to
get as much of that potential out of ourselves.
I also try to inspire my workers to reveal their
potential and we all express that potential in
making furniture.”
It’s not just any furniture, mind you. Even the
furniture must reveal its potential to be more.
“Everything we make must have the potential
to last a very long time, to become the antiques
of the future,” explains Jacques. “It is important
to be proud of everything we produce and
everything must fit my philosophy and meet
the quality specifications of that ‘antiques of
the future’ potential.”
Jacques began his career in furniture
production working in antique restoration,
which explains his love of the medium. “What
I love about antiques is that with a bit of care
and attention they can last another 100 years
or more.” Given this, it’s not surprising that “I
was originally against making new furniture,”
he reveals. It was an aversion that had its roots
in environmental issues and a firm devotion
to restoration and the longevity that can be
coaxed out of a piece with a bit of love. “But
then I decided that I could be making the
antiques of the future. I want all our pieces
to be beautiful treasures, with quality levels
allowing them to last.” They must also be
pieces that are able to be re-used over and
over again. “The highest grade of recycling is
being able to just re-use the existing product,”
believes Jacques.
The result of Jacques’ philosophy are beautiful
pieces that scream class and quality. “Our quality
on all levels is What sets us apart from the rest,”
insists Jacques. “The quality of the materials,
process, service and finishing, combined with
the wide range of materials we use.”
Aside from these ‘antiques of the future’
furniture pieces, Jacques and his H+R team
specialize in designing and putting together
kitchens which are top level on both
aesthetical and practical terms. He also works
with an artist to provide original works of art
for clients, as well as with outside designers
to produce furniture and interiors for their
clients. “I am involved in all H+R designs but
we work with a lot of designers who come
in with their own ideas,” explains Jacques. “I
am not claiming to be a designer, but we do
have the technical design know-how which
compliments designers’ creativity.”
It is a technical design know-how which has
also given them such a good reputation with
international clients as specialists in ‘knock

down’ designs. “Knock-down designs are furniture pieces that
can be taken apart to fit in containers for export all around
the world,” explains Jacques. “They can’t be too heavy and
they must be easy to put back together on the other side.” All
this, plus absolutely no compromise on quality or aesthetics.
Having developed his philosophy for furniture production,
the logical next step would be to create an entire home from
the ground up, keeping true to his philosophy. This is indeed
something Jacques is now contemplating. “I’m currently in
talks with a Dutch partner carrying the same philosophy
on developing this ‘total concept’,” Jacques admits. “There
is always an overlap between building and interior design
anyway and this way we cross out that overlap.” As with
the furniture he produces, “The goal would be to build
something that would survive the test of time… the quality of
the entire house must adhere to the ‘antiques of the future’
philosophy.”
Finally, though, it is not philosophy that sells furniture. The
furniture must sell itself. But even here, Jacques knows that
he’s got it covered. “It’s not so much the way the it looks, but
the way you look at it,” is his take on the matter. Besides,
“The truth sells best – we are honest about everything we sell
and produce,” he adds. A truth that shows itself in furniture
visibly huge and rich in quality, comfort and style.

It was a beautiful, clear, moonlit night beside the Indian Ocean in Ta-
banan for the Grand Opening Party of the spectacular Villa Babar on
March 26th. The dress code was blue and white, the helicopter pad
was converted into a dance floor, the Champagne was flowing, fire-
dancers were dancing, DJ Cozy was spinning the sounds, and guests
came from far and wide, with special shuttle buses laid on from Semi-
nyak. The blue and white theme ran through the décor, from the table
linens by Sunbebek to the balloons and decorations. Babar – the villa’s
elephant namesake – was sculpted in ice, white tents were erected,
and funky beanbag seating as well as poolside sunbeds ensured that
everyone could enjoy the party in comfort. Meanwhile, the terraced
lawns of Villa Babar were dotted with low tables, where guests en-
joyed a wonderful Moroccan-themed buffet dinner, catered by Dris
of Khaima. This included the spicy meat stews known as ‘tagines’, sal-
ads, couscous, almond custard pastille, Moroccan mint tea and shisha
pipes filled with strawberry flavours. This memorable party was or-
ganised by Pro Motion Events, who certainly know how to introduce
a new villa in true Bali style!

er to celebrate the 4th anniversary of Horizon Glassworks in Kengetan,
Ubud. This was not the only reason to come for many notorious guests
such as Pranoto, Fillipos, Neil Adams, Wolfgang Widmoser, Trisha Sertori,
Chris Gentry, John Hardy, Nyoman Purpa and about one hundred others.
The highlight was Seivertson’s Hot Glass Team ‘The Five Elements’
live performance. Creating a master piece: the skull of a Dwarf Mam-
moth. A grand finale for French artists in residence Regis Anchuelo
and Francis Auboiron collaborating with Ron and archeologist Julien
Espagne. Together they created ‘The Glass Age’, an exhibition of hot
sculpted and blown Glass Art referring to the Stone Age opening in
June at Duta Fine Arts Foundation, Jakarta.
Visitors witnessed blood, sweat and tears in the “Hot Shop” [literally!]
and also a Sneak Preview of the exhibition. The slide show of photog-
rapher Wekku Saskki of previous sessions amazed visitors by the skills
and intensity required to produce such stunning works. In response
guests collected gallery pieces and signed up for the limited edition
book “The Glass Age” launching at the exhibition in June.

parting shot

In the days preceding Bali’s day of silence, Nyepi, creative Balinese hands are busy crafting “Ogoh-ogoh”, representations of ancient evil spirits like Kumbakarna and Butoijo. On the eve of Nyepi these evil incarnations are paraded through the streets in rousing displays and then ceremonially burnt, symbolically purifying the island in preparation for the holy day of silence and contemplation, when no lights can shine and no person may leave their home for an entire 24 hours...
