Slide 2 Balance Your Life! 2014 Eve Coates Slide 3 John and David are woodcutters. They were chopping down trees with saws. After they had each cut down 3, their saws started to get dull and wouldnt cut very well. John decided to just keep cutting because he only had 2 trees left and he didnt want to waste time sharpening his saw. David stopped cutting and started sharpening his saw so it would cut better. They each had to chop down 5 trees before they could go home. Slide 4 John finally chopped down his 4 th tree, but it took a long time. He only had one more to go. John looked around for David and saw that he was already done! He wondered how he did it so fast. David told John his saw was too dull and he should stop and sharpen it. John said, No, I dont have time to sharpen my saw, I need to chop this last tree down! David went home and John kept on cutting. It took him 3 times as long to cut the tree with his dull saw. You need to stop and sharpen your saw. I dont have time! Slide 5 Why did David finish chopping the trees before John? David knew that he needed to sharpen his saw in order to finish faster. Even though it took time to sharpen the saw, he finished sooner because his saw cut better. John thought it would be better to just keep cutting. He didnt want to waste time sharpening his saw. But because his saw was so dull, it ended up taking him even longer! We need to be like David and take time to sharpen our saws. This means we balance our lives and keep our minds and bodies healthy. Sharpen Your Saw Slide 6 Mind Balance Your Life To keep yourself balanced, you need to take care of all the parts of your life. You need to take care of your mind,heart,body,and soul. When you put all of these parts together, it makes you who you are! Heart Soul Body You Slide 7 Balance Your Life Mind Soul Body Heart If you focus too much on one area of your life, you wont have time for the other areas. This will put your life out of balance. Slide 8 Balance Your Life You can think of your life like a scale that you need to keep balanced. If you do too much of one thing, your life will become out of balance. Slide 9 Balance Your Life! Even good things can be bad for us if we do them too much. For instance, oranges are healthy and good to eat. But what if you only ate oranges and nothing else. What would happen? You would probably get sick if you only ate oranges. You need to balance your diet with other foods, even though oranges are good for you. Slide 10 Balance Your Life Reading is a good thing to do. It helps you learn and use your imagination. But what would happen if you read all day, every day? If you read all the time, it would put your life out of balance. You wouldnt have time for other important things like exercise and playing with friends. Slide 11 Let s Practice! We know its important to balance our lives and not do any one thing too much. Listen to the following stories and try to help the people balance their lives. Slide 12 Sleep Ryan LOVED playing basketball. He played it every day! He would often play for so long he didnt have time to do his homework or get enough sleep. Playing basketball is a good way to get exercise and have fun, but Ryans life is out of balance. What could he do to keep his life in balance? Play FootballPlay Baseball Good job! You helped balance Ryan s life! Slide 13 Apple Jennas favorite food was ham sandwiches. She ate one for lunch and one for dinner EVERY day! Her parents tried to get her to eat other things, but thats all she wanted. Even though sandwiches can be good for you, Jenna needs other food to keep in balance. What could she eat to balance her life? Peanut Butter &Jelly Sandwich Turkey Sandwich Good job! You helped balance Jenna s life! Slide 14 Play with Friends Claire liked to write stories. She would write stories by herself all during recess and when she got home shed stay in her room and write more stories. She didnt see her friends or her siblings very much because she stayed in her room writing so often. Writing stories is a fun and creative thing to do, but Claires life is out of balance. What could she do to balance her life? Read a Book Draw Pictures Good job! You helped balance Claire s life! Slide 15 Read a Book Brandon loved being with his friends. He played with them every chance he could get. Hed play with them at recess and when he got home hed call up a friend to play right away. Brandon also loved reading, but he could never find time to read because it wasnt something he could do with his friends. Being with your friends is a good thing, but Brandons life is out of balance. What could he do to balance it? Jump Rope with Friends Have a Party Good job! You helped balance Brandon s life! Slide 16 Good job helping the children balance their lives! Remember, we need to take time to sharpen our saws. This means we take care of our minds, hearts, bodies, and souls. This also means we balance our lives. Good luck sharpening your saws! Good Job!
