BAILEYS CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER 2014 www.baileysofglenrowan.com.au PAUL’S PRESS It is generally this time each year that a winemaker is able to make a judgement about the vintage just gone. I try to avoid bold claims about young wines, but it must be said that vintage 2014 was kind to us, and the wines look great at this early stage in their development. The 2013 wines have come together nicely and look strong as they are about to head down the bottling line. Lifted, bright aromatics across the range and the sort of fruit intensity I wish we could achieve every year. Members will be able to make up their own minds when they are released into packs in May next year. As an industry I feel we sometimes get a little caught up in ratings and comparisons and forget that each year is really just a snapshot of a growing year; the prevailing weather conditions and the impact of decisions made in the vineyard and winery. Each vintage tells a story and sometimes it takes a few years to find out how the story ends. It has been great to get out on the road lately and share a glass with 1870 Club members at our dinners in Melbourne and Canberra. Your support is always appreciated and I look forward to meeting even more members at our 1870 Club Feast at the winery in late November. Lastly I would like to communicate to you all that Christine has retired from Baileys entering a new chapter in her life devoting more time to Charlie, grand children, her abstract art and large sprawling garden. Over the journey Christine had become not only a valuable contributor but a close personal friend and I still marvel at her endeavours and enthusiasm to turn Baileys cellar door around and forge out the dynamic, intimate and loyal 1870 Club that we all enjoy today. Whilst we all wish Christine well and thank her for her time dedicated to Baileys I should take this opportunity to introduce Lennie who comes to Baileys with years of cellar door and wine club experience. He has plans to take the cellar door and wine club to the next level, exciting times for us all. Cheers, Paul Dahlenburg, Winemaker

2012 GLENROWAN SHIRAZ – THE QUIET ACHIEVEROur 2012 Glenrowan Shiraz has won two important trophies at the Rutherglen Wine Showing for the best red wine from North East Victoria and best barrel matured wine from North East Victoria. The win marks the second time in four years that Baileys has won the trophy for the best red in the region. The 2012 Shiraz is gaining a reputation as a bit of a quiet achiever having recently received a 94-point rating from James Halliday and a four and a half star rating (top wine in category) in Winestate Magazine.

The release of James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion is eagerly anticipated each year by wineries and wine lovers alike and is considered the most comprehensive annual coverage of the Australian wines and wineries.

We are thrilled to report that we have retained our fi ve red star status (the highest possible rating) in this year’s guide and received our highest pointed reviews for a number of wines including:

Our annual feast is our way of saying thank you for the wonderful support and loyalty we receive from our 1870 Club members. We invite you to join us at a shared table, enjoy a memorable feast, a glass of wine or two and the fellowship of like-minded food and wine lovers.

This year we are holding a ‘twenty mile feast’ in which we will attempt to source everything for the dinner within a twenty mile radius of Baileys – a great way to showcase the incredible food bowl that is North East Victoria.

For those members who are keen to back-up the following day we will be holding a relaxed yet informative tasting focused on Shiraz. Join us in the cellar for a whistle stop tour of the best Shiraz regions in the world and sample six premium wines from Baileys, elsewhere in Australia and further afi eld.

A STUDY OF SHIRAZ

Baileys has fi nally (some would say kicking and screaming!) entered the social media sphere and

we now have a presence on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It is a great way for us to connect with wine lovers and of course for our 1870 Club members to keep up-to-date with the day-to-day happenings at the winery. We would love

you to connect with us online and give us a like or a follow. For those without social media access fear not, we are still partial to

a phone call and a chat as well!

Spring is a great time in the vineyard as the vines come to life, buds begin to swell and burst and bunches start to become visible. Over the coming months we will be spending our time on vine structure to ensure we grow the best possible fruit we can. This will include shoot thinning, fruit thinning and leaf plucking, to ensure we maximise fruit exposure to light and air.

At Baileys of Glenrowan we are always looking to improve the quality of the grapes and over the past three years we have been working on a little project titled our Heritage Selection Trial (HST). The aim of the HST is to identify the best vine in the 1920s Block and then use this vine as a mother vine for a new planting of baby 1920s Block vines.

We commenced three years ago by inspecting every vine in the 1920s Block and allocating a score to the vine based on shoot length, internode spacing (the distance between each leaf on a shoot), bunch structure and berry size. Once we identifi ed the top 100 vines, Paul and the winemaking team along with the viticulture team tasted the fruit from each vine and ranked the vines based on fruit fl avour.

This process was repeated over the next two years to account for seasonal variation, with the lowest rankings vines eliminated until we were left with just twenty. It was then time to virus test the fi nal twenty to ensure we had the most disease resistant vines. This eliminated a further four vines but thankfully not the number one ranked vine.

Later this year we will take cuttings from the mother vine to build up numbers to ensure we can grow enough new vines to plant a new block of baby 1920s Block Shiraz. Unfortunately for us and more so for our members, it will take another three years before we have suffi cient quantity to plant a new block.

Thank you for your continued support and we will continue to ensure that we do everything we can to deliver fruit of the highest quality.
