ESL(English as a Second Language)

• ESL placement based on:– Language Survey – CELDT (California English Language Development Test)

– CST (California Standards Test)

– DPI or previous ESL final grade

• Based on the criteria mentioned above, students are placed on the appropriate ESL class:

ESL 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3, or 4

Curriculum Overview

• At the middle school and high school level, students are placed on a ESL class.

• Each class is a semester in length.

• After meeting the ELD standards for that specific ESL class, the student goes to the next ESL level.

• After successfully passing ESL 4, students move on to a sheltered English class.

AssessmentsWith the High Point Curriculum, there are 3 different types of assessments:

1. Language Acquisition Assessment (LAA). 1-2 Not passing 3-4 passing

Oral test where students are asked to respond to specific prompts. Students are graded based on the function, speech patters, and vocabulary.

2. Writing Assignments (WA) 1-2 Not passing 3-4 passing

Student are asked to go throw the five steps of the writing process and write in a specific genre.

Students MUST submit their drafts along with their final draft.

3. Unit Test (UT)1- 69% = FAIL 70- 100%= Passing grade

Unit Tests are given at the end of the Unit. It is a multiple choice test with a written portion.

30% - Unit Test

5%- Selection Test

5%-Class work / homework

90- 100%= A

80-89%=B

70-79% = C

1-69% = Fail*Student’s must pass the ELD portfolio requirements to move on to the next

level.

Materials• Students need to bring to class daily their High

Point textbook, Language Practice Workbook (LPB), Reading Practice Book (RDP- ESL 1AB only)

• Classroom materials– Lined paper– 2 pens (black or blue) and #2 pencils with

erasers– Porter Agenda– 1” binder exclusively for ESL– Reading book for Sustain Silent Reading (SSR)

Classroom RulesAll of the school rules also apply to the classroom. You make refer to the Porter agenda.

1. Respect adults, classmates, and school property.

2. Follow directions the first time given.

3. No gum chewing, eating, or drinking.

Consequences

1. Verbal warning.

2. Paper pick-up / class or after school dentition.

3. Referral to the corresponding office / Parent phone call

Procedures

When students arrive to class they are expected to have their materials ready for instruction.

Students will begin the day by copying the agenda on their Porter student agenda.

Attendance

Attendance is very important for student success.

• When a student is absent it is the students responsibility to ask the teacher for the make-up work.

• If the student is absent during a test day, the student needs to make an appointment with Ms. Bernal to make up the test during lunch or after-school

TARDIES

• If the student is not in their assigned seat, when the bell rings, the student is TARDY.

• 3 or more tardies in a five week period will result a grade of a “U” in Work Habits.

Out of the class passes

• Bathroom Passes– Students need to go to the restroom before or

after class. Students will receive 2 passes per semester.

– If the student has a medical condition, please notify the teacher and the health office.

• Health Passes– If the student is not feeling well, he / she

should ask for a Health Pass. Passes will be given upon request and condition

Parent InvolvementParents are encouraged to be involved with their child’s education.

How to get involved:– Ask to see their agenda – Ask to see their homework– Attend the ELAC meetings & VOTE– Ask questions about their classes– Check out Porter’s website for information and
