EverytimeIshufflemyfeetdowntheTigerwalk,thatlinefromourdearuniver-sity’salmamaterplaysinmyhead. AfterseeingallofthewonderfulthingshappeningwithTSU,Iamover-whelmedwithexcitementandhopefulforourfuture.Fromourfootballteamfinallyget-tingitsownplacetocallhomeattheBBVACompassStadiumtoouruniversitybeingrecognizedforhavingan87percentAfrican-Americangraduationrate,thelargestinthestateofTexas,accordingtoarecent“DiverseIssuesinHighEducation”surveyreleasedearlierthissummer. Toourincomingfreshmenandtransferstudents,IwouldliketoformallywelcomeyoutoTSU.Wemakeeveryef-
forttoliveuptoourmottoof“ExcellenceinAchievement”andsurpasstheaccomplish-mentsofourdistinguishedalumni. Tomyfellowreturningstudents,welcomebackforanothersemesterinTiger-land.Youcancatchuponwhathappenedatthe“Swagvs.Success”and“MiseducationoftheGreekXperience”seminarsduringFresh-manWeek,getafewstyletipsonwhatyoushouldweartoclassandsomuchmore. Congresspassedstudent loan legisla-tionthissummerthatkeptinterestratesfromdoubling,butthelawcreatesnewpressuresongraduatestudents. Thenewlegislationpreventedcurrentinterestratesof3.4percentfromballooningto6.8percent.ButCongresseliminatedthesix-monthgraceperiodaftergraduation,inwhichgovernmentpaystheinterestonstudentloans.Inaddition,graduatestudentsarerequiredtocontinuetopayinterestontheirloanswhileingraduateschool. Graduate students are concerned, astheywillbefeelingthepinchthehardest. “That’stoughforlawstudentsbecauseafterwegraduateweneedtospendsixtoeightweekstopreparefortheBARexam,”saidAr-min Jezari, a third- yearThurgoodMarshalllaw student. “I think something like this isgoing to be hard for any graduating studentwhohastotakeastatecertificationtesttogethired.”
Somegraduatestudentsfeelthatsincetheyhavealreadybeenenrolledinschool,thelegislationshouldapplyforthosewhoarein-comingfirst-yeargraduatestudents. “Ithinkit’sunfairtothecurrentgradstudents,”saidJonathanEverhart,second-yearThurgoodMarshalllawstudent.“Ifsomeonecannot pay the interest on their loans, thentheycan’tbeinschool.Whataretheygoingtodowithapartialdegree?” Another part of the law requires thatthestudentsbeinformedinatimelymanner,intheformofane-mailsentbeforeandduringtheschoolyear.Alsothelegislationrequiresthatemailssenttothestudentmustbewritteninalanguagestudentscanunderstand,notinthelegaljargon. TSU has opened offices in the BellBuilding to guide students through this newobstacle. LindaBallard,DirectorofStudentFi-nancialAssistance,andherofficeareleading
thechargetoinformstudentsonwhatoptionstheyhaveinordertoreinintheirdebt. “We have the default office here atTSU, with the tools to plan for the future,”saidBallard. “Ifweteachyouhowtobeasmartbor-rower,evenifyoudon’thavesix-monthgraceperiod,butyouknoweverythingavailabletoyou to get a deferment, so you canmanageyourdebtproperly.” TheLoanDefaultOfficehasdevelopedonlinemodulestohelpstudentswithdebtlit-eracy,offersinformationoncreditscoresandanyfinancialquestionsonemyhave. Latisha Marion, Default PreventionCoordinator,iseagertohelpcurrentandfor-merstudentswiththeirfinancialquestions. “Wewanttoteachstudentstheydonothave to borrowmore thanwhat they need,”Marionsaid.“Andgivethemcoreknowledgethatwhattheydonow,willaffect themlaterondownthefuture.”
Asincomingfreshmenpreparefortheirfirstsemesterofcollege,theTauEpsilonchap-terofthechapterofOmegaPsiPhiFraternityInc.,theStudentGovernmentAssociationandtheCollegiate100BlackMenofAmericasponsoredaleadershipseminarentitled“Swagvs.Suc-cess.” “Ichosethename,‘Swagvs.Success’becauseit’scatchyanditkindofputsyouinadi-lemmaofwhichsidetostandon,whetheritbeswagorsuccess,”saidSGAComptollerLeonSpen-cer. Spencerbeganthesemi-narwithstudentshavingadanceofftoshowtheir“swag.”Hethen
showedavideoofstudentsataNorthCarolinaA&Tblockpartydancingandgivingtheirdefini-tionsofswag. “Now-a-days,especiallywiththeyouthinthisgeneration,everyoneseemstohaveswagandisn’ttoomuchworriedaboutsuc-cess,”Spencersaid.“Everyone’smoreworriedaboutpopularityotherthanbeingsuccessfulorget-tingadegree.” Thenightwasfilledwithskits,poetry,musicandpowerpointpresentationsontopicsrangingfromnetworkingtomak-ingtherightdecisions. “Networkingiskey,buildarelationshipwithyouradvisorsandprofessors,”TsaltaBaptistesaid.“Keepinmindwhatthetrue
goalisandthat’stomultiplyyourdegreeaftergraduating.” Therewasapaneloffaculty,staffandstudentsofferingopinionsonvarioustopics.Thepanelconsistedofthe2012-2013MissTexasSouthernUniversityOliviaTurner,100BlackMenChairmanDarnellJoseph,Aca-demicAdvisorforStudentServic-esMicharaDeLaneyandGradu-ateAssistantTimothyMoss. “Everyoneknowswhat’srightandwhat’swrong,ifyoufeelguiltybeforemakingadeci-sionyouprobablyshouldn’tbedoingit,”Turnersaid. Drugsandalcohol,in-appropriatepicturesonsocialnetworks,theadvantagesofbeingsocial,howtodressoncampus
andhowtokeepyourselfontherighttrack,wereamongothertop-icsdiscussed. “Theoverallseminarwasreallygood,ithelpedmefindoutinformationaboutthingsthatIdidn’tknowaboutanditshowedmepeoplewhoIneedtotalkto,”freshmanChiaraLocksaid.“Thebiggestthingwasnetworking;networkingwillgetyoufarincollege.” ThroughoutthenightDJsplayedmusicandthefreshmenweregiventhechancetomingleamongsttheirpeers. “Ihopethestudentslearnthatyoucanactuallybesuccess-fulandhaveswagandnotjusthaveswagandjustcallitaday,”Spencersaid.

Theeventwasintendedtoenlightenunawarestudentsabouttheins-and-outsaboutGreeklifeoncampus. WhenmanystudentsattendcollegetheyareonlyfamiliarwiththeentertainingstepshowsandracypartiesthatGreekorga-nizationshost.Attendingonlytheseeventswillcausemanystudentstoformaone-sidedopiniononthesehistoricorganizations. KarlUba,presidentofTSU’sNa-tionalPan-HellenicCouncil,joinedPhiBetaSigmaFraternity,Inc.becauseof“brother-hood,scholarshipandservice.”Hewantstoensureincomingfreshmenstudentsunder-standwhatalltheorganizationsintheNPHChavetooffer. “Ifeltlikethiseventwasinformativetoalltheincomingstudents,”Ubaadded,”theirabsurdquestionsweredefinitelyan-swered.” Thehostfortheevening,RasheedAlCromwell,Esp.,didnotmissastepinhisinteractive“miseducation”presentation.Moreover,heencouragedstudentstoengageinthelaid-backconversationutilizingsocialmedia.“Pleasetweetyourquestionstomeandpar-ticipateinthetextpolls,”Cromwellsaid. CromwellpresentedaslideshowpresentationthatbrokedownthebasicsofGreeklifeintheAfrican-Americanculturefrom1906topresentday.HispresentationwasacrashcourseforGreekdummies.SophomorecommunicationstudentAmandaRoperthoughtthepresentationwas“wellputtogether”andentertaining. Whileotherwet-behind-the-earstu-dentsweredubious,RopersaysthatGreekorganizationsarea“collectivegroupofindividualsthathaveacommongoaltohelpthecommunity.”

WashingtonwasafreshmaninhighschoolinHuntsville,Ala.whenheknewhewantedtobecomean“illustriousAlphaman.” “TheProjectAlphaprogramcametomyhighschoolandtheydiscussedsexualawareness,”Washingtonsaid. ProgramsliketheseareonesCrom-welldiscussedthroughouthispresentation.“Backintheday,Greekmemberswere‘grownmenandwomen’whohadfamiliesandwerefocusedonmakingabetterlifeforBlackpeople,”Cromwellsaid. AsberrybringshiswinningreputationtoTexasSouthernfromShawUniversityinNorthCarolina,wherehisteamswonthreeCIAAconferencechampionshipsinfiveyears.UndeterredbyTSU’srecentrun-inswiththeNCAA,Asberryislookingforwardtoanewseasonatanewprogram. “We’retryingputthepastbehindus,”Asberrysaid.“Iwanthelptheprogramtoimprovefromnowon,onandoffthefield,andifwecandothat,wewillbeaverysuccessfulfootballteam.” AthleticofficialsareawaitingwordonadditionalsanctionsfromtheNCAAforhav-ingtoomanyacademicallyineligibleplayersinpastyears. Ironically,theFootballChampionship
SubdivisionAthleticsDirectorsAssociationgavetheTSUfootballprogramanawardforhavingthemostimprovedAcademicProgressReportforthelasttwoyears. “Itsoundsweirdthatwearegettingawardsforthesamethingthatwearebeingpunishedfor,butthemainthingisthatweareimproving,”saidSeniorAssociateAthleticsDirectorMichealMoleta. TheTiger’soffensivecaptain,seniorquarterbackDantaviousParker,isfocusedonthenewseason. “ThestuffwiththeNCAAisoutofourhands,allwecandoisdoourjobasstudents,andperformonthefield,”Parkersaid.“Ev-erybodyislockedinandbuyingintothenewsystem,weareanticipatinggoodthingsthisseason.” ThisyeartheTigerswillbehostingop-ponentsattheirnewhomedowntownatBBVACompassStadium.Themanleadingthecharge,seniormiddlelinebackerBillyParker,ishappytoofficiallycallaplacehome.
“Itsexcitingtofinallyplayinaplacewecancallourown,”Parkersaid.“We’regoingtoplayhardtogetthestudentsandalumnispiritbackinournewhome.” Withatotalof38upperclassmenontheroster,leadershipisgoingtoplayabigrolethisseasonwithayoungerbase. “Theupper-classmenaresteppingupandtakingtheyoungerguysundertheirwing,”Parkersaid,“makingsurethey’rewherethey’resupposedtobeonandoffthefield.Theyknowwegottheirbackwhenaproblemarises,butweareallresponsibleforbeingasuccessfulfootballprogram.”
