A final asado in tribute to the original PortenoIf you ask any local Argentinian, no matter how old they will all tell you the same thing: Argentina is world famous for its asados. If you ask any local Sydneysider, the home of the asado was the original Porteno restaurant in Cleveland Street.

An asado isn’t just a barbecue, or merely a cultural tradition, it’s the primary expression of Argentinian national pride (matched only by their soccer team…when they are winning). For Argentinians, the ritual gathering is more important than the food itself - most families have one every Sunday where the entire family gathers at the ‘head of the family’s’ house.

Asado is a technique for cooking cuts of meat and seafood, hung over burning coals, cooked very slowly for many hours, with the result being succulent flavourful meats and seafood which literally melt in your mouth.

The original two-hatted Porteno in Cleveland Street was founded by switched on local legends Ben Milgate and Elvis Abrahanowicz in 2010. It quickly became a Sydney culinary institution. In 2015, a blaze caused by its famous barbecue pit forced it to close. In 2016, Porteno moved to a new venue in Surry Hills - where the legend lives on today. However over the last two years the original Porteno (renamed Casa Porteno) was restored to its original glory and has been used as a special events venue. Unfortunately, in January 2020 Casa Porteno will close once and for all to make way for more Sydney apartments.

What better way to say farewell than to light the fire pit one last time and enjoy a traditional asado.

The food will be accompanied by wines from Argentina’s three main regions and its iconic wineries (such as Bodega Chacra, Bodega Noemia, Achaval-Ferrer and Bodega Colome) shown together for the first time in Australia.

Gabor Kemeny is often known to say: “you know what is more important than the wine - the food you have it with. And you know what is more important than the food - the company you have it with”. In other words, an asado. With the festive season around the corner come and join us for good wine, good food with great friends at Porteno.

Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2017Region: South Australia Rating: 96/100

The superlative 1990 vintage showed there was more to life than Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon. Blackcurrant, dark chocolate and tannins run through the bouquet and palate alike, splitting and reforming in a dance of cassis and spices of all kinds. There is life and energy to spare here. Alcohol: 14.5% alc. Drink by 2032. Price: $100. Rating: 96/100.

James Halliday, The Weekend AustralianRRP $100

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2017Region: South Australia Rating: 95/100CDeep, bright crimson. Its balance and structure are the guarantee of a very long life. Alcohol: 14.5%. Drink by: 2037. Price: $50. Rating: 96/100.

James Halliday, The Weekend AustralianRRP $60

Penfolds Reserve Bin 18A Chardonnay 2018Region: Adelaide Hills Rating: 96/100CAdelaide Hills. Superstar chardonnay. Eight months in oak, 40% new. This is a fine-fingered wine. A flavoursome one. It feels complete. It pumps texture and fruit through satin and silk. It throws smoke, white peach, cedar-infused cream, mineral. It's so fine, so seamless, so in command. A superb white wine. No doubting it. Alcohol: 13%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Aug 2019. Drink: 2020-2026+. Price: $125. Rating: 95/100.

Campbell Mattinson, The Wine FrontRRP $125

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2016Region: South Australia Rating: 97/100CIncredible dense colour here. The palate is so rich and concentrated with powerful fruit. Cured meats, balsamic vinegar and liqueur cherry nuances swirling through this massively concentrated and powerful statement. The palate feel and weight is so supple and plush. Super saturated and multi-layered. A wine with years and years ahead of it. Drink: now to 2059. Price: $135. Rating: 98/100.

Ray Jordan, The West AustralianRRP $135

Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz 2017Region: Coonawarra Rating: 95/100

Brilliant bright crimson and dark red. The nose is a spicy and slightly earthy mushroomy meat combi that is immediately engaging. It's ripe, generous and concentrated but it is also effortless and stylish with a very long refined finish. Lift of violets on the finish. Drink: now to 2031. Price: $60. Rating: 94/100.

Ray Jordan, The West AustralianRRP $60

Penfolds Grange 2015Region: South Australia Rating: 98/100

Bang. The first whiff cries Grange. A lifted, fragrant, harmonious blend of fruit, oak (American, of course) and finely pitched tannins. Faultless. It's all relative, but this is starting to relax its grip. And the length is very, very special. Alcohol: 14.5%. Drink by 2055. Price $900. Rating: 99/100.

Hidden Label Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 (KHL 1085)Region: Coonawarra Rating: 96/100

The star variety in the stable, and a step up from the other Bordeaux varieties and blends. This is sourced predominately from the older planting circa '74-'88. Dark purple-red, opulent ripe black fruit, a hint of mint and leaf with matching levels of spice and toast from 18 months in 43% new oak. Tannins are fine gravel. Concentrated, dense yet composed. Should age well. Alcohol: 14.4%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Feb 2019. Drink by: 2035. Price: $35. Rating: 96/100.

Hidden Label Coonawarra Merlot 2015 (KHL 8813)Region: Coonawarra Rating: 95/100

It's easy to see why this should have won a trophy at the Limestone Coast Wine Show '16, its juicy cassis fruit augmented by the spicy fruit and tannin extract, the result of barrel fermentation of part of the wine. This is right up there in the context of traditional Aus clones available between '82 and '99. Alcohol: 14%. Date tasted: Dec 2016. Drink by: 2030. Price: $26. Rating: 95/100.

James Halliday, Halliday Wine CompanionSells for up to $26 under its own label

Hidden Label Langhorne Creek Cabernet Malbec 2016 (KHL 6233)Region: Langhorne Creek Rating: 96/100

Clever cabernet-dominant blend incorporating malbec, franc, merlot and petit verdot to great effect. Red and black fruited, leafy cabernet, fine savoury tannins, line and length to burn. Complexity derived from judicious use different varieties rather than sheer mass, oak or volume. Gold at the National Wine Show '17 speaks volumes. Alcohol: 14%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Jan 2018. Drink by: 2030. Price: $35. Rating: 96/100.

Hidden Label McLaren Vale Shiraz Grenache 2017 (KHL 2602)Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 94/100

A 60/40% blend, separate lots fermented in open or closed vessels, matured in used barriques for 12 months prior to blending. It's medium-bodied at best, but there's no shortage of flavour, and sufficient extract to provide texture (and length). Attractive wine, with McLaren Vale's stamp on it from the word go. Alcohol: 13.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Sep 2018. Drink by: 2034. Price: $22. Rating: 93/100.

Hidden Label Chianti Superiore DOCG 2016 (KHL 2514)Region: Tuscany Rating: 96/100

This premium chianti from Tuscany is made by one of the world's most revered winemakers - Alberto Antonini - voted by his peers as one of the top winemakers in the world, based on Decanters latest review. Loaded with rich aromas of dark berry fruits and a slight green herbal note, on a multi layered palate rich and juicy with balanced grainy tannins. A top accompaniment with food such as red-sauced pastas and roasted or grilled meats.

Hidden Label Barossa Shiraz 2017 (KHL 5743)Region: Barossa Valley Rating: 94/100

If you think the flavours and texture of this wine more akin to the Eden Valley than the Barossa Valley, you're probably right – three of the four estate vineyards are in the Eden Valley, one in the Barossa Valley. The scented pepper, spice and black cherry of the wine provide a lightness of foot to the medium-bodied palate, balance following the same line. Value+. Alcohol: 14.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Sep 2018. Drink by: 2027. Price: $20. Rating: 94/100.

Hidden Label Hunter Valley Chardonnay 2016 (KHL 1660)Region: Hunter Valley Rating: 93/100

Made to the same exacting standards as the Vat 47 flagship, this baby sibling is nevertheless looser knit across a breezy sway of vanilla pod oak, nougatine and peachy fruit flavours, with some truffled lees work providing mineral tension. Fully flavoured and ready to roll. Alcohol: 12.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Jan 2018. Drink by: 2021. Price: $25. Rating: 91/100.

Hidden Label Marlborough Pinot Gris 2017 (KHL 3468)Region: Marlborough Rating: 93/100

We predicted some time ago that the very determined wine industry legend behind this winery and the drive to become the world's most sustainable wine producer would lead them to becoming New Zealand's most successful wine brand. Countless accolades over recent times have reinforced this hunch. Pristine pinot gris grapes from Marlborough's cool Awatere sub-region has delivered classic honeysuckle and ripe, spiced pear aromas and flavours, with a fine stony mineral texture. Perfect with barbequed chicken or seafood.

Hidden Label Special Reserve Orange Chardonnay 2017 (KHL 1347)Region: Orange Rating: 97/100

A delightfully composed and expressed chardonnay; the inviting bouquet shows nectarine, rockmelon, nougat and roasted hazelnut characters. It is equally satisfying on the palate with excellent weight and intensity, wonderfully enhanced by creamy mouthfeel and silky texture. Flavoursome and immensely appealing. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: June 2019. Drink: at its best now to 2024. Price: $75. Rating: 95/100.

Hidden Label Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2018 (KHL 9257)Region: Adelaide Hills Rating: 96/100

The {secret name} Vineyard was hand-picked over two weeks, rows selected daily, the grapes chilled before being pressed. The bouquet of lychee and other tropical aromas sets the scene for a palate of a plate of carefully sliced fruits and a squeeze of lemon. All of which may suggest this is just a fun sauvignon blanc, when in fact it has beautifully poised and very long finish and aftertaste. Highway robbery at the price. Alcohol: 12%. Drink by: 2020. Price: $20. Rating: 95/100.

James Halliday, Halliday Wine CompanionSells for up to $20 under its own label

Hidden Label Yarra Valley Nebbiolo Rosé 2018 (KHL 4619)Region: Yarra Valley Rating: 95/100

93% nebbiolo, 7% sangiovese Good partners. Pale tea rose pink. Lifted, aromatic florals, alpine strawberry and white stone fruit. Very attractive. The palate drinks like a white wine – mineral acid, crunchy texture, line and length. It waxs/wanes between white and red flavours, which sounds confused, but it drinks like a charm. Alcohol: 12.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Jan 2019. Drink by: 2020. Price: $25. Rating: 95/100.

Hidden Label Hunter Valley Semillon 2017 (KHL 2712)Region: Hunter Valley Rating: 94/100

All from the HVD vineyard I believe. I'm told 2017 was a very good vintage for Hunter Semillon too. Lemon barley, lemongrass, talc and ester perfume. There's a softness and roundness to the acidity here that's very appealing, which along with ample lemon/lime flavour and a delightful chalky texture, makes it immediately appealing. It's long too. A lot of wine for your money here. Alcohol: 11%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: May 17. Drink: 2017-2027+. Price: $25. Rating: 94/100.

Hidden Label Eden Valley Riesling 2018 (KHL 1603)Region: Eden Valley Rating: 96/100

Exceptional riesling! Bravo! A seam of transparent, juicy acidity transports yuzu spice, grapefruit pulp, nashi gelato and lemon drop flavours long. Mellifluous. Graceful. A sophisticated spellbinding wine. Fresh, but nothing tangy, nor hard. Alcohol: 12%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Dec 2018. Drink by: 2030. Price: $28. Rating: 96/100.

Halliday Wine CompanionAwards

The prestigious Halliday Wine Companion Awards are always hotly anticipated by consumers and producers alike.

There are many superb wines from both the ‘big name’ wineries and surprises from quality producers on their way up. Nevertheless, the awards showcase all the good things about Australian wine, and make it clear that there is a wine out there for everyone and any budget.

We have chosen a stand-out selection of the Best Varietals.

Congratulations to the four major award winners :

Winery of the Year – Jim BarryBest Value Winery – Domaine NaturalisteWinemaker of the Year – Vanya CullenWine of the Year – Yangarra High Sands Grenache 2016

Cullen Diana Madeline 2017Region: Margaret River Rating: 99/100CC81% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot, 6% cabernet franc, 3% malbec. Wild-fermented and matured for 18 months in French oak (40% new). The colour is faultless, as is the wine. It has waves of complexity, like one of Margaret River's surf breaks, changing shape as the luxuriant cassis swells on the mid-palate, then finishes with ripe, textured tannins as the wave goes on to crash on the shore. The overall ripeness is perfection. Alcohol: 13%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Jan 2019. Drink by: 2042. Price: $129. Rating: 98/100.

James Halliday, Halliday Wine CompanionRRP $129

Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2015Region: Coonawarra Rating: 98/100CJohn Riddoch represents a tiny fraction (1% or thereabouts) of the Wynns Coonawarra Estate cabernet crush in the years in which it is made. This is a classic release, unusually supple and already balanced. Blackcurrant/cassis fruit sweeps along the palate, nuances of Coonawarra mint and earth joining with quality French oak following on behind. Alcohol: 13.4%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Sep 2018. Drink by: 2050. Price: $150. Rating: 98/100.

James Halliday, Halliday Wine CompanionRRP $150

Grosset Gaia Cabernet Blend 2016Region: Clare Valley Rating: 98/100CCEstate-grown cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, the certified organic vines 33yo. A breath of fresh air, pulling my lip up and out of the Dante's inferno of other wines in this particular tasting. Supple and immaculately balanced, every flavour, texture and beautifully nuanced fruits that are 100% within the varietal makeup, the tannins almost lustrous, so fine are they. Alcohol: 13.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Mar 2019. Drink by: 2046. Price: $84. Rating: 98/100.

James Halliday, Halliday Wine CompanionRRP $84

Sidewood Estate Shiraz 2017Region: Adelaide Hills Rating: 97/100CCFive clones, mainly selective-harvested, a small portion hand-picked and vineyard-sorted for whole bunches, matured in French oak (25% new) for 13 months. Seriously satisfying, every aspect explored and finessed, ripe black fruits the core. Alcohol: 14.5%. Closure: screwcap. Drink: to 2045. Price: $26. Rating: 97/100.

James Halliday, Halliday Wine CompanionRRP $26

Brookland Valley Cabernet Merlot 2015Region: Margaret River Rating: 97/100CCEstate-grown, hand-picked, open-fermented, matured in French oak for 13 months. A wine of elegance and finesse, reflecting the 'do nothing' philosophy in its crafting. It's only medium-bodied, but the perfume of the bouquet tells you something's up and it's the purity of its cassis fruit that has the cyren call allure on the finish of the long, lingering palate. Alcohol: 13.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Sep 2018. Drink by: 2035. Price: $59. Rating: 97/100.

James Halliday, Halliday Wine CompanionRRP $59

Dexter Pinot Noir 2017Region: Mornington Peninsula Rating: 97/100CClear crimson-purple; wastes no time in laying siege with its fruit bouquet and (in particular) palate. It's hard to decide whether it's the dark berry (black cherry and blackberry) or the savoury texture and length that are the best points of a truly outstanding pinot.13.5%. Drink to 2032. Y A N G A R R A E S T A T E 9 9 P O I N T E R S We at Kemenys have been aware, for some considerable time, of the sheer quality of Yangarra wines. They seem to be growing in stature year by year under the masterful direction of Chief Winemaker Peter Fraser. Yangarra High Sands Grenache 2016 took out the 2020 Halliday Wine Companion Award for ‘Wine of the Year’, and Yangarra King’s Wood Shiraz 2017 was also in close contention. These two 99/100 point wines are made in miniscule quantities, and Kemenys has grabbed a tiny allocation which will be in very high demand.

They will not be available through our website because of this rarity. While stocks last, they will be limited to 2 bottles per customer, strictly by contacting a wine advisor on 13 8881. These superb wines will disappear quickly, so act quickly if you want some. Apologies in advance to those who miss out.

Yangarra Estate High Sands Grenache 2016Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 99/100CCCThis is the king of Australian grenache, and is not to be undertaken lightly. Deep, although clear, in colour, it has a rainbow of flavours, its deep roots probing the soil nearby for sustenance that will provide tannins and all things needed for the grapes to provide the magic evolution of the red flowers and spices of this wine. Alcohol: 14.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Feb 2019. Drink by: 2036. Price: $150. Rating: 99/100.

James Halliday, Halliday Wine CompanionRRP $150

Yangarra Estate King's Wood Shiraz 2017Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 97/100CCHand-picked from the certified biodynamic estate Block 12 on a fruit day, wild yeast-open fermented with 25% whole bunches, matured in a 2500l French foudre. It's impossible to find anything done or not done that would improve this superb wine. It's (only) medium-bodied, but fills the senses with its tantalising bouquet, always with something more to say, yet it pales into insignificance once you taste the wine. It takes intensity and length to a new horizon, a sip as complex as that of a Rare Rutherglen muscat. Alcohol: 13.5%. Drink by: 2052. Price $50. Rating: 99/100.

James Halliday, Halliday Wine CompanionRRP $50

Tahbilk 1927 Vines Marsanne 2012Region: Goulburn Valley Rating: 97/100CCBrilliant gleaming straw-green; marsanne isn't an aromatic variety (nor is semillon), so even when 6yo, don't expect too much on the bouquet. Conversely, expect more, much more on the electrically charged palate. It is beautifully balanced, honeysuckle, lime, lemon, honey and ginger playing within a near-invisible net of acidity. Alcohol: 11%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Sep 2018. Drink by: 2030. Price: $46. Rating: 97/100.

First Creek Winemakers Reserve Semillon 2018Region: Hunter Valley Rating: 98/100CCThe use of a heavy glass bottle for semillon is rare. The wine has a highly expressive bouquet, lemongrass and a haunting touch of spice, the palate building on the promise of the bouquet with citrus-tinged acidity that has already stamped the wine but with none of the sharp edges that can bring tears to the eyes of the unwary. A particular feature of the wine is its high alcohol, unusual, but works like a charm. Top gold Hunter Valley Wine Show '18. Alcohol: 12.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Mar 2019. Drink to: 2038. Price: $60. Rating: 97/100.

Its quality derives from its purity (a rare term for rosé), balance and length, red fruits with a dusting of spice on the long, refreshingly dry palate. A coup for Tahbilk. Alcohol: 12.5%. Toolangi Estate Pauls Lane Chardonnay 2018Region: Yarra Valley Rating: 98/100CCCrushed and pressed with full solids straight to oak (20% new), both primary and malolactic fermentations going through wild. It's a wondrous wine. Flinty, direct, pure and authoritative. It tastes of oatmeal, white peach, toffee apple and cedar wood though a) everything is cut and freshened by citrus and b) those flinty, struck match notes are stitched into every cranny. The finish, wow, it doesn't, or not in a hurry. One swallow brings a summer of flavour. Alcohol: 13.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Feb 2019. Drink by: 2028. Price: $44. Rating: 98/100.

Gleaming straw-yellow; 6.5g/l dosage, disgorged Jun '15, and has acquired exceptional length to its toasted, buttery brioche, honey, spice and nut flavours. Despite its age, it has kept its freshness and vibrancy thanks to its core of acidity. Alcohol: 12.8%. Closure: cork. Date tasted: Sep 2018. Price: $200. Rating: 98/100.

Yangarra Estate Shiraz 2017Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 97/100CCFrom six estate blocks, 75% destemmed, every berry optically scrutinised by a very expensive piece of equipment that happily deals with any disease or other damage (say botrytis). Wild yeast-open fermented, plunged, 14 months in French oak (20% new). The pure singularity of this certified biodynamic wine has a different face to its King's Wood sibling. It relentlessly captures the senses with its dark spiced fruits, the aftertaste slowly diminishing. Alcohol: 14%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Feb 2019. Drink by: 2047. Price: $35. Clare Valley

South Australia’s Clare Valley is one of Australia’s oldest and most beautiful wine regions. Nestled in the northern Mount Lofty Ranges, the Clare Valley’s vineyards were planted in the early 1840s.

The Clare has a warm, continental climate, with cool evening breezes. The wide variety of soil, aspect and altitude provides for the rich diversity of wine styles in both white and red wines. They range from rich terra rossa topsoil over limestone around the Watervale sub-region through to the famous, free-draining broken slate of the Polish River Hill.

The Clare Valley is home to many of Australia’s greatest rieslings, but the region is also responsible for a superbly structured cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.

Established in 1967 by regional pioneer Dr Tom Cullity, Vasse Felix is Margaret River's founding wine estate. Vasse Felix's wines reflect the varietal strengths of Margaret River, with a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, as well as Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon blends. All wines are vinified with minimal intervention and bottled within the

Estate’s winery, situated at their Home Vineyard overlooking the Wilyabrup Brook.

Virginia Willcock is now the Chief Winemaker behind some of Australia’s most critically acclaimed wines at Vasse Felix. She joined as Chief Winemaker in October 2006. Her love of winemaking emerged while growing up on a property in the Swan Valley, which included a hobby vineyard from which the family would make wine for their own consumption.

Virginia is one of the most awarded female winemakers in Australia, having been named ‘Gourmet Traveller WINE Australian Winemaker of the Year’ in 2012 (she was also a finalist in 2010), ‘Winemaker of the Year’ by The West Australian Good Wine Guide 2013, and ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in the 2017 Australian Women in Wine Awards. Virginia has now completed almost 30 vintages in Margaret River and her passion and expertise is evident on all the Vasse Felix wines.

Peach and lime, almond biscotti, a whisper of smoke and spice. Powerful but refined, with the crunch of mouth-watering stony acidity, and a strong current of white fruits rolling over it. Tyrrells Vat 47 Chardonnay 2017Region: Hunter Valley Rating: 97/100CCThis is right up there with the best recent vintages of Vat 47 for me (2009, 2013). I suspect it will be quite a thing with a few more years in bottle, and I'd suggest that the sweet spot is generally around five to ten years from vintage. Lime and melon, vanilla and spicy biscuit, kinda delivers that classic Vat 47 flavour profile, along with some cashew and a minor smokiness. Each year on the 1st July Tyrrell’s Wines will be celebrating the new vintage of the Winemaker’s Selection range. The Winemaker’s Selection range was created by third generation family member, Murray Tyrrell, in 1965 when he set out to designate the best wines from each vintage. This was done by naming them after the cask (or ‘vats’) in which they matured, such as Vat 1 Semillon and Vat 9 Shiraz.

These wines are only bottled in the years when Tyrrell’s believe that they are of the highest quality possible. Made with limited winemaker intervention, cellared in pristine conditions and released with what is considered to be a minimal bottle age, the Winemaker’s Selection has the ability to gracefully develop in bottle for many more years.

Many consider this year’s releases to be Tyrrell’s best-ever across the range.

Region: Hunter Valley Rating: 96/100CCFrom the '65 Barry Drayton-planted Hillside Vineyard. Very dark purple red and bright. Fresh aromas of raspberry pip, black and red currants and wet red earth. It's very much medium-bodied, with soft savoury tannins and a just right acidity. Old vines, carefully made. A winning combo. Alcohol: 13.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Jan 2019. Drink by: 2027. Price: $60. Rating: 95/100.

David Bicknell, Halliday Wine Companion

Region: Hunter Valley Rating: 95/100CCClean, fresh, almost peachy fruit along with aniseed and lime. It's flinty and fine boned with sparklingly pure acidity and excellent length of flavour. There's a suggestion of lettuce and grassiness, but it doesn't obscure the delicacy and finesse of this little gem. It's approachable now, in smash it with fish and chips kind of way, though it would seem a shame to do so. I liked it immediately. Suspect it's going to be grand. Alcohol: 10.9%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Sep 2011. Drink: 2012 to 2031+. Rating: 94/100.

There is something magical about Bin 9000. At about 6 years of age it has begun cleaning up on the domestic and international show circuit. The 2013 has won an astonishing 13 trophies and 34 gold medals. However it is the huge accolades that it has most recently won that shows it has hit its peak. Three trophies at the 2019 Sydney Royal Wine Show for Best Semillon, Best Mature White and Best NSW Wine. This was followed up only one week later with a further three trophies at the Hunter Valley Wine Show 2019 including Best White Wine of Show. The accolades speak for themselves. The magic of Hunter Semillon of course is that it takes on a golden colour after some bottle ageing and develops delicious honey and toast characters. This still has a long way to go.

Sam Kim, Wine OrbitRRP $125

By Farr Sangreal Pinot Noir 2017Region: Geelong Rating: 98/100CCEach year the same descriptive notes come to mind for this wine: seductive, perfumed, seamless balance and moreish. It is a site that wavers very little in more difficult vintages and excels in the great ones-this is the backbone of By Farr wines. The alluring characters of this vineyard, combined with red fruits, whole bunch, acidity and oak, have produced a beautifully interwoven expression of site and vintage. That's what it's all about.

Kemenys RRP $85

By Farr Farrside Pinot Noir 2017Region: Geelong Rating: 97/100CA meld of Dijon clones and the domestic stalwart, MV6, this abuts the lauded Sangreal Vineyard, albeit, the vines are younger, of a cooler disposition and hailing from darker soils over a limestone substrata. Hand-harvested and fermented under the aegis of wild yeast with a good whack of whole-bunch fibre, this exotic and sturdy pinot was ten raised in Allier wood for 18 months or so, with a single racking. Darker fruit allusions in a pinot context, corralled by an expensive kirsch richness across the mid-drift, hints of orange zest acidity, ginger and ample clove, cinnamon and turmeric-clad tannins, slinky, a bit edgy and expansive. Alcohol: 13%. Drink by: 2025. Price: $82. Rating: 95/100.

Ned Goodwin, Halliday Wine CompanionRRP $85

The Farr estate is located in the Moorabool Valley between Geelong and Ballarat, 100km southwest of Melbourne. Gary and Robyn Farr purchased the original property in 1994 and the second section in 1998 with an additional land purchased in 2011 by second generation Farrs, Nick & Cassie. They grow viognier, chardonnay, pinot noir, gamay and shiraz, but it’s fair to say that despite the excellence of all their wines, pinot noir is the jewel in the crown.

Their wines are highly sought-after, both locally and overseas, and are always in limited supply.

Finding the best pinots has become a bit of an obsession here at Kemenys. Once upon a time, not so long ago, you could count the number of exceptional Australian and New Zealand pinots on one hand. As winemakers have come to identify the top pinot growing regions and the best combination of tradition and technology in the winery, the quality of their pinot noir has reached a world-class calibre.

It’s a pleasure for us to evaluate so many lovely pinots, and come up with the following selection of our favourites.

Craggy Range Te Muna Road Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015Region: Martinborough Rating: 96/100CCAbsolutely delicious pinot noir, with lifted red and black berry fruits together with an appealing floral and rose petal influence. Craggy Range Gimblett Gravels Vineyard Te Kahu Bordeaux Blend 2016 Region: Hawkes Bay Rating: 98/100CCThis is in hot international demand, and allocations are extremely limited. Not surprising as 16000 wines from across the globe were entered into the Decanter World Wine Awards 2019 and only 50 are given Decanter's Best in Show trophy - and this stunning Bordeaux blend is one of them. In rating this 97 points, the Decanter judges said "this was a wine which convinced our judges that all the hard work that has gone into Bordeaux varieties (alongside Syrah) in Gimblett Gravels is beginning to pay off. The 63% of Merlot sings out in its soft, seductive black-cherry and black-plum fruits. The soft wealth on the palate is very impressive too... Real 'pleasure wine', yet never simple".

Kemenys RRP $34

Craggy Range Sophia 2015Region: Hawkes Bay Rating: 97/100CCA super-smooth blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc with dense, complex mixed red berries, blackcurrant, floral, violet, anise, spice, cedar, new leather and nutty oak flavours. A powerful, concentrated wine which has absolutely no fear of tannin. It cries out for a little cellar-time. Superb. Closure: screwcap. Drink: 2019-2036. Price: $45. Rating: 97/100.

Craggy Range Kidnappers Vineyard Chardonnay 2018Region: Hawkes Bay Rating: 94/100CThe Kidnappers Vineyard is situated beneath Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand's famous Hawkes Bay region. The maritime climate and sandy soils provide ideal growing conditions for chardonnay. The 2018 chardonnay has fresh aromas of ripe citrus and stone fruit. The palate is elegant but complex, with bright grapefruit and lemon, white nectarine and restrained nutty oak. Smooth and fresh, it’s a great drink now and over the next five years.

Kemenys RRP $32

Craggy Range Te Muna Road Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2018Region: Martinborough Rating: 94/100CAs Matt Stafford (Craggy Range chief winemaker) points out "we chase complexity in our Sauvignon...". Grown on the lower terrace at Te Muna Road vineyard, this wine shows a unique level of texture and complexity. The cooler climate of Martinborough ensures the wine is aromatic with steely minerality while the rocky soils gives intensity of the fruit. Brilliant with fresh oysters or spicy Asian salads.

Yet it's a mark of the greatness of this rosé that those origins do linger - namely the distinguished clay-marl terraces of Bandol, and the contentment of the Mourvedre which so relishes growing there. This is a deeper salmon than many of its peers, with scintillatingly peachy-floral fruits. The origins come through most clearly in the palate, with its sustained shaping structure from those contented Mourvedre vines. The Grenache, meanwhile, has brought wealth and fleshy Cinsault charm. It adds up to an irresistible whole. 97 Points. Trophy, Best Rosé in Show.

Sangiovese is an Italian red wine grape varietal. It is Italy’s most popular variety and is best known as the main ingredient of Tuscany’s world famous Chianti wines.

In the 1960s the CSIRO was instrumental in trialling sangiovese in Australia. There has been a great uptake of the variety in many Australian wine regions. Spectacular wines from South Australia, Victoria’s King Valley and

Western Australia, in particular, have shown that sangiovese is here for the long run. The variety makes rich, red-fruited wines, with savoury and herbal characters with assertive tannins. These are qualities which make sangiovese such a great food wine.

Here are some excellent local and Italian sangiovese for your enjoyment.

1960 Poggiotondo Chianti Riserva DOCG 2016Region: Tuscany Rating: 96/100CCPoggiotondo is the family estate of Alberto Antonini, one of the most revered winemakers in the world. Alberto was selected by his winemaking peers, in a Decanter magazine survey, as one of the world's top five winemakers. The sangiovese grapes are meticulously sourced from selected rows of low yielding vineyards. Chianti's 'Riserva' classification requires extended ageing in oak barrels, which has enhanced the wine's beautiful black fruit flavours and elegant spices. An endearing Poggiotondo Family Estate Chianti Riserva. Only 320 dozen made.

Farnese Fantini Sangiovese 2018Region: Abruzzo & Molise Rating: 92/100CSangiovese is usually associated with the classic Chianti wines of Tuscany. Here it has been grown by Farnese in Abruzzo on the Adriatic coast. It is softer, less earthy than Chianti but it has an instant appeal. Cherry fruit, soft tannins and requisite acidity give it that certain Italian zip. It is a fun drink for pasta and pizza. At its price it is the complete package really.

Coriole Sangiovese 2018Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 94/100CDeep red-purple colour, bright and young. The bouquet is very fresh and bright and loaded with fresh dark berry aromas, a tickle of star anise and a hint of dried herb and mixed spice. A lovely spectrum of aroma and flavour, the firm tannin spine perfectly balanced and running the length of the palate. Very long. Outstanding wine, a classic in the making. Tasted: July 2019. Alcohol: 14.2%. Drink: 2019-2035. Rating: 96/100.

Poggio Anima Belial Sangiovese IGT 2017Region: Tuscany Rating: 94/100CLove the labels. One of the four crown princes of hell it is believed that Belial is the purest definition of 'lawlessness. 'The correlation is that much of what has come to be known as 'IGT' is simply lawless - people blending international varietals with indigenous varietals. Anyway, this is pure Tuscany. It smells and tastes of sun kissed red berry fruit; it's dry, earthy, and delicious. After it continues to open, scents of cherry cola, minerals and spice emerge. Swirl that essence along with the red fruit, and there's simply no way you won't be transported to therolling hills of Tuscany.

Da Vinci Rosso Montalcino 2017Region: Tuscany Rating: 94/100CSangiovese sourced from the small hillside in the commune of Montalcino, near Siena. Deep purple red in colour. Barone Ricasoli Chianti 2017Region: Tuscany Rating: 93/100

Barone Ricasoli is one of Chianti's most important producers; certainly the most important historically, with a remarkable story that goes back well beyond the 12th century. The most historic of wine castles, Castello di Brolio and its remarkable 250 hectare Chianti Classico vineyard, has been the home to the Ricasoli family since 1141. Brilliant ruby red with purplish tinges. Highly aromatic with notes of cherry, blackberry, violet and sweet tobacco. Pleasant and fresh palate with evident hints of ripe red fruit. Wine in half-bottles is a very handy thing. How often have you arrived home from work, felt like a relaxing glass of wine, and changed your mind because you didn’t really want to open the full-sized bottle. You would have opened a half-bottle in a flash.

‘Halves’ are also great to take restaurants. The reduced volume allows you to choose a few different wines to match various courses, without any wastage.

The richness of some dessert wines often makes it difficult to finish a bottle, so halves are a perfect option.

Here is a collection of some classic wines, which we can offer you in half-bottles.

Australian’s are so very fortunate to have such a great selection of local and international sparkling wines available at such reasonable prices.

From local legends such as Pirie, to the Kiwi masterpiece from Quartz Reef, there is beautiful drinking.

Special mention goes to the superb Chateau Tanunda Grand Cuvee Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2009 which shows the huge benefits of bottle age for quality sparkling wine. This wine is simply amazing – so fresh and vital after a decade in bottle, with still a long life ahead – and at a ridiculously low price for a wine of this standing.

Dom Perignon Vintage Millesime Brut 2008Region: Epernay Rating: 98/100CThe best Dom since 2002. A vintage with very restrained, powerful style that has been released non-sequentially after the 2009. This has a lighter stamp of highly curated, autolytic, toasty aromas than many recent releases. Instead, this delivers super fresh and intense aromas of lemons, grapefruit and blood-orange peel. Hidden Label Frankland River Shiraz 2018 (KHL 7663)Region: Frankland River Rating: 95/100

The previous 2017 vintage was rated highly by James Halliday (95 points) and we suspect this 2018 release will score equally well. Generously flavoured as expected from Frankland, with loads of delicious, smoky dark plum fruit characters. These fruit flavours are well balanced by the subtle and slightly chalky tannins. The wine’s fine acidity contributes to its great length of flavour and will ensure it continues to drink well over many years to come. The value is compelling, even at its cellar door price of $22, let alone under our Hidden Label.

We predicted some time ago that the very determined wine industry legend behind this winery and the drive to become the world’s most sustainable wine producer would lead them to becoming New Zealand’s most successful wine brand. Countless accolades over recent times have reinforced this hunch. Pristine pinot gris grapes from Marlborough’s cool Awatere sub-region has delivered classic honeysuckle and ripe, spiced pear aromas and flavours, with a fine stony mineral texture. Rockbare Shiraz 2016Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 94/100CThe wine is undeniably opulent and powerful, while remaining stylish and structured; lifted aroma of blackberry, blueberry compote, cocoa and cedary wood lead to a concentrated palate that is plush and flavoursome. Sam Kim, Wine OrbitRRP $26

Kilikanoon Killermans Run Shiraz 2017Region: Clare Valley Rating: 93/100CA classic, regionally inspired shiraz favoured by an excellent vintage. Brick red in colour with youthful crimson hues. Lifted aromas of red fruits, dark cherries, exotic spices and seductive French oak char enliven the senses. Richly textured and delivering well beyond expectations, the palate carries forward the flavours of dark cherries and licorice from the nose and combines further with additional layers of chocolate, cedary overtones, finely balanced tannins and a long persistent finish. Excellent value.

Knappstein Riesling 2018Region: Clare Valley Rating: 93/100CLight, bright yellow colour, with a superbly fragrant aroma which suggests mandarin as well as a bouquet of dried flowers. It’s soft and fruity in the mouth, finishing clean and dry, but is not dry to the point of austerity in the mouth. The faintest residual sweetness ensures ready drinkability. A delicious and approachable young riesling. Drink: 2018-2025. Price: $20. Rating: 91/100.

Seppelt Jaluka Chardonnay 2016Region: Henty Rating: 95/100CCRight up there with its proud history of quality, and also a world record number of label design changes - please don’t try to improve what you have now. Even though tasted in unavoidably warm conditions, came through with flying colours. It has a vibrancy and intensity that brings you up with a jolt, but you settle down quickly, enjoying the typical white peach/pink grapefruit flavour spectrum. Alcohol: 12.5%. Date tasted: Mar 2017. Drink by: 2031. Price: $27. Rating: 95/100.

Vasse Felix Classic Dry White 2018Region: Margaret River Rating: 92/100CA semillon/sauvignon blanc blend that for all the world looks like it has a slab of chardonnay included (it doesn’t). Rating: 92/100.

Howard Park Miamup Cabernet Sauvignon 2017Region: Margaret River Rating: 96/100CCThe 2017 Miamup Cabernet Sauvignon is best we have ever tasted from Howard Park. A brooding deep garnet in colour with youthful and classic cabernet aromas of mint, violets, savoury dry herbs and briary hedgerow fruits, all spiced with a touch of mocha and toasted oak. The palate is a bag of bramble fruits - red currants, mulberries, plums, blackberries and blueberries, all supple and rich. This ambling fruit power is bridled by an ample swathe of fine fruit tannins, well assisted by the finest grained French oak. Bravo!

Gibson the Dirtman Shiraz 2017Region: Barossa Valley Rating: 95/100CCOpen-fermented, hand-plunged, 5-7 days on skins, 30% fermented in American oak. Rich and luscious, velvety plum and blackberry fruit in the ascendant, not the oak. Interesting take on barrel fermentation, presumably standing the barrels up having knocked out the heads. Speaks more of the place than the vintage. Alcohol: 14.8%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Jan 2019. Drink by: 2032. Price: $35. Rating: 94/100.

3 Drops Riesling 2017Region: Mount Barker Rating: 95/100CCImpossible not to admire this wine’s intensity, purity and length. That would be more than enough but it has a pleasing textural element too. Lime leaf, juice and blossom characters are the delicious drivers. Length of the finish is quite something. Alcohol: 12%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Jul 2017. Drink by: 2030. Price: $25. Rating: 95/100.

Toolangi Estate Pauls Lane Chardonnay 2018Region: Yarra Valley Rating: 98/100CCCrushed and pressed with full solids straight to oak (20% new), both primary and malolactic fermentations going through wild. It’s a wondrous wine. Flinty, direct, pure and authoritative. It tastes of oatmeal, white peach, toffee apple and cedar wood though a) everything is cut and freshened by citrus and b) those flinty, struck match notes are stitched into every cranny. The finish, wow, it doesn’t, or not in a hurry. One swallow brings a summer of flavour. Alcohol: 13.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Feb 2019. Drink by: 2028. Price: $44. Rating: 98/100.

Plantagenet Aged Release Riesling 2013Region: Mount Barker Rating: 96/100CCThe wine looks 5 years young, not old. It speaks volumes about the development potential of the Plantagenet Rieslings. The interplay between fruit and acidity is much the same as before other than the increased body and acidity. This will enter the plateau of perfection around ‘23 and go on from there. Alcohol: 12.33%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Jan 2018. Drink by: 2033. Price: $40. Rating: 96/100.

James Halliday, Halliday Wine CompanionRRP $40

First Creek Winemakers Reserve Semillon 2018Region: Hunter Valley Rating: 98/100CCThe use of a heavy glass bottle for semillon is rare. The wine has a highly expressive bouquet, lemongrass and a haunting touch of spice, the palate building on the promise of the bouquet with citrus-tinged acidity that has already stamped the wine but with none of the sharp edges that can bring tears to the eyes of the unwary. A particular feature of the wine is its high alcohol, unusual, but works like a charm. Top gold Hunter Valley Wine Show ‘18. Alcohol: 12.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Mar 2019. Drink to: 2038. Price: $60. Rating: 97/100.

Domaine Naturaliste Floris Chardonnay 2018Region: Margaret River Rating: 95/100CThis is beautiful chardonnay from Bruce Dukes. He's taken full advantage of a great vintage by giving us a wine with a rich flavour profile but with a restrained elegance typical of his best chardonnays. Domane Naturaliste has been named as the ‘Best Value Winery’ in the 2020 Halliday Wine Companion Awards.

The growing world-wide reputation of Domaine Naturaliste wines comes down to the immense passion of its owner and Chief Winemaker Bruce Dukes and his gorgeous Margaret River fruit.

Bruce draws on decades of local and international winemaking experience – including four years at Francis Ford Coppola’s Niebaum-Coppola winery in California and a significant tenure at Pierro Winery locally. His time spent in California helped Bruce hone his exacting and confident approach. His winemaking philosophy is best described by wine expert Professor Steven Kolpan who noted in his book ‘A Sense of Place’ that, “Bruce Dukes articulates the art and science of winemaking with elegance and ease. Bruce knows that the best wines are made vine by vine, berry by berry.”

Bruce counts on his prodigious viticultural and winemaking expertise for some of the success, but he’s fully aware that his is a magical, inexplicable synergy with the raw ingredients which results in such brilliant wines.
