Implementation Tips
• Begin with staff training
– Have staff practice with staff
• Roll out in phases
– Prenatal education
– Early infancy education
• Be flexible
Challenges
• Early infancy education
– Baby cues information is most meaningful to
parents when presented during the first six
weeks
• Infant enrollment appointment takes longer
– Enroll infant, recertify mom
– Provide breastfeeding support
– Provide early infancy education
• New babies and new parents at WIC
How did staff respond?
• In the agencies that have implemented the
campaign, staff have responded positively
• Staff enjoy sharing baby behavior messages
with participants and friends and family
What staff had to say…
• “I wish I knew this stuff when my kids were little.”
• “Asking mothers to hold and watch their babies improves the connection between them.”
• “Participants love receiving the DVD and booklet so they can share it with others at home.”
– From a manager:
• “I can’t imagine a more worthwhile campaign! I love knowing we help foster better communication between moms and babies. We’ve invested a lot in staff training but the results have been priceless.”
How did participants respond?
• Participants found the information helpful
and most reported viewing the materials
(booklet and DVD) again at home
What participants had to say…
• “Instead of just assuming I know the reason my baby is doing something, I go back to the booklet and look it up.”
• “The class really helped. It’s been easier for me because I know what to expect and what my baby needs.”
• “Doing the same thing again and again helps me calm my baby when I know he is not hungry.”
• “Now I know she is not supposed to be sleeping through the night.”
